Alarm Systems Better Business Bureau Reliability Seal

Best Alarm Systems

Increasing the security of your home is essential to protect yourself, your belongings, and your family. According to the experts, high unemployment rates and other economic woes in the nation are a factor in rising crime rates. With more than 2 million burglaries each year in the United States alone, and an average loss of over $2,000 per incident, it is well worth the investment to make sure your home is properly protected.

High-quality deadbolts and well-placed lighting on the exterior of your home can reduce the risk of becoming a victim. However, experience shows that skilled burglars can pick a lock, even a deadbolt, in a minute or less. On the other hand, crime data also demonstrates that criminals tend to avoid homes with an alarm system, to improve their chances of not getting caught.

Frontpoint

Features:

No installation charges

Monitoring plans start at $34.99

Customer Information: 1-877-602-5276

TopConsumerReviews.com Best-In-Class Blue Ribbon Award Frontpoint offers affordable, state-of-the-art Alarm Systems. Their cutting-edge approach to home security and emphasis on excellent customer service puts them at the top of our list among providers of Alarm Systems.

One key feature of Frontpoint's Alarm Systems is that it is 100% wireless and 100% cellular. Why does this matter? With traditional, landline-based Alarm Systems, burglars can render the Alarm System useless with a quick snip of phone lines or cable wires. With Frontpoint, the alarms from your control panel communicate with their monitoring center over a secure cellular network - there's no need for you to provide a landline or phone connection of any kind.

Installing the Frontpoint Alarm System is a breeze. Unlike other Alarm Systems that require an in-person visit from a technician who will drill holes in the walls and hard-wire the system, Frontpoint offers a pre-programmed, DIY solution that you can set up in as little as 30 minutes right out of the box. The Frontpoint home security components use a wireless frequency to connect instantly to their Control Panel, which signals the monitoring station using its built-in cellular device, eliminating any need for a connection with a landline or internet cable. This gives you the flexibility to expand or change your Alarm System as needed, including taking it with you when you move!

Frontpoint's equipment is within reach for most budgets and can be configured to meet your needs with no hassle. You may also be eligible for an equipment discount of up to $300 with a 3-year monitoring contract. There are three monitoring plans to choose from, all of which include 100% cellular monitoring and 24/7 coverage in the event of intrusion, fire, environmental hazards, and life safety conditions:

  • Protection Monitoring. This is Frontpoint's most basic coverage, and the cost is $34.99 per month.
  • Interactive Monitoring. As you might guess from the name, this plan lets you interact with your alarm system – from anywhere – using Frontpoint's mobile apps and remote system controls. This coverage also allows you to automate your home lighting, for greater convenience, and adds advanced features like Crash-and-Smash and geo services. The cost is $44.99 per month.
  • Ultimate Monitoring. Frontpoint's top monitoring plan includes each of the features listed in the other two plans, plus adds the capability for Video Surveillance: allowing you to remotely monitor your home via live streaming video. The cost is $49.99 per month.

Frontpoint adds to the value of their Alarm System packages by offering free shipping on all equipment.

Frontpoint's higher-end monitoring packages put the power of technology in your hands. For example, once your Alarm System is installed, you can set your system up to provide you with instant alerts if a door opens, the power goes out, a window breaks, or even when a child comes home. Also, you'll be able to access your Alarm System with any Internet-connected device. If you have an iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, or Windows phone, you can easily use Frontpoint's free smartphone apps to check on your Alarm System. Alternately, if you're on a computer, a laptop, or a tablet device, you can use their online customer portal. Their advanced home automation features let you control lights, thermostat and door locks, from virtually anywhere in the world, giving you added convenience while helping you save energy. And, with the video surveillance feature included with the top-tier monitoring package, you can even see what's going on at home, at any time.

One of the most customer-friendly features of Frontpoint's Alarm Systems is how easily they can be expanded. Frontpoint sells and monitors a wide assortment of sensors that can be added onto your Alarm System as desired. These sensors can help you monitor for intrusions, fires, environmental concerns, and even medical emergencies. Plus, your monitoring fees stay the same, regardless of the number of sensors you install. Several of these additional Alarm System sensors include:

  • CO Sensor
  • Glass Break Sensor
  • Flood Sensor
  • Smoke/Heat sensor
  • Panic Pendant

Frontpoint really stands out among the crowd when it comes to their attention to customer service, as evidenced by their "A" rating and accreditation with the Better Business Bureau. They were also given the honor of receiving the Angie's List Super Service Award, which is given only to companies that have a superior service rating. And, Frontpoint is not lacking with respect to customer testimonials, with hundreds of reviews praising the products and excellent service received.

As further proof of their commitment to keeping customers happy, Frontpoint has a 30-day risk-free money-back trial on all of their Alarm Systems. If you're unhappy with your Alarm System or monitoring, you can send back your equipment within 30 days. You'll get a no-hassle refund, with no restocking fees and no return shipping charges.

Frontpoint is a clear leader in the Alarm Systems industry. They make sure that their customers have access to cutting-edge technology, including wireless sensors, free mobile apps, and numerous customization options. Their support staff is friendly and knowledgeable and their policies demonstrate their commitment to their customers. If you need a high-tech, feature-rich Alarm System that is easy to install as well as affordable, Frontpoint (1-877-602-5276) should be your first choice. They earn our highest ranking.

Monitoring plans start at $19.99

Customer information: 800-951-5111

Protect America has served over 400,000 customers since its founding 20 plus years ago. They provide sophisticated and reliable alarm systems at an incredibly affordable price, and with their Lowest Price Guarantee, Protect America even matches advertised offers on their monitoring service.

All of their Alarm Systems are self-installed, allowing you to make the decisions you need without being persuaded by salesmen to buy more than your home requires. Installation is very simple, and if you have any questions you can easily reach Protect America's knowledgeable, helpful staff. Opting for an alarm system with a DIY installation can also save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars compared with the costs of a traditional home alarm system that requires professional installation. Simply call Protect America's toll-free customer service department (1-800-951-5111) to receive a free home security consultation.

Protect America‘s five wireless alarm system plans easily meet the security needs of any household and budget. Each plan comes with a wireless GE home security system with a talking control panel, motion detector, internal siren, battery backup, one-button arming, door chime, a Lifetime Replacement Parts Warranty, three window decals, and a yard sign.

Plan Details:

  • Copper. This package comes with 3 entry point detectors and a Motion Detector. The equipment is FREE and the monthly monitoring fee is $19.99.
  • Bronze. This package comes with 7 entry point detectors and a Motion Detector. The equipment is FREE and the monthly monitoring fee is $35.99.
  • Silver. Best Value. This package comes with 10 entry point detectors. The equipment is FREE and the monthly monitoring fee is $37.99.
  • Gold. This package comes with 12 entry point detectors and a Motion Detector. The equipment is FREE and the monthly monitoring fee is $39.99.
  • Platinum. This package comes with 15 entry point detectors and a Motion Detector. The equipment is FREE and the monthly monitoring fee is $42.99.

In addition to alarm systems, Protect America offers a number of security accessories that further enhance the safety of your home. Available home security equipment includes:

  • Motion Detectors
  • Keychain remote control
  • Glass break detectors
  • Flood Sensors
  • Low temperature sensor
  • A variety of X10 home automation equipment

In order to adequately protect your residence, you should place sensors on each ground level entry point, such as doors and windows. Naturally, the number of sensors you need depends on the size of your home. Smaller homes, condos, and apartments will probably be well-served by the 3 sensors provided in the Copper package, the entry-level alarm system offered by Protect America.

In our opinion, the Silver plan represents the best value for most homeowners. This package provides an impressive amount of home security equipment – including 10 security sensors and a motion detector – for no upfront cost. The only fees are for the monitoring of your alarm system, which is well-priced at $37.99.

As with most alarm systems, you can even save money with a Protect America package: after you activate your sensors, you'll receive a certificate of installation that will likely earn you a sizeable discount on your homeowner's insurance. Why not let your alarm system pay for itself?

Protect America is an excellent way to get an alarm system for no upfront cost. Their impressive variety of home security packages provide reliable nationwide monitoring using the most up-to-date technology available. Because of their competitive pricing and expert customer support representatives, Protect America (800-951-5111) earns a very high rating and is a top pick for your next alarm system.

ADT

ADT Visit Site

Features:

$99+ customer installation charge

$36.99+/month for monitoring

Customer information: 1-866-238-9934

ADT has been protecting homes and businesses for many years, making them one of the most recognized names in alarm systems. ADT has four main alarm system plans to meet your needs, with options for both landlines and cellular users, fire detection, or basic intruder protection. With ADT, you should expect to spend some money on start-up costs for installation and/or equipment that other providers include at no extra charge, particularly for the landline-based alarm systems.

Another difference you'll see with ADT is that they'll send an associate to evaluate your home's alarm system needs prior to installation. Most of the systems are wireless but some in-person coding is necessary with certain add-on equipment.

ADT's entry-level alarm system package is $99 for installation, plus an additional monitoring fee of $36.99 per month. The equipment in this package includes:

  • A wireless touchpad
  • 3 entry point sensors
  • 1 Wireless Motion Sensor (Pet-Immune)
  • Window decals and yard signs

This package does require a landline for use, and if you need more than three entry point sensors for your larger home, expect to pay more for your equipment.

ADT also has three wireless (no landline required) alarm system packages:

  • Basic Wireless - for $48.99/month, you get the features of the entry-level plan, plus 1 Key Fob remote
  • ADT Pulse - for $52.99/month, you receive all of the features of the Basic Wireless plan, plus mobile access and alerts
  • ADT Pulse + Video - for $58.99/month, you get the features of the Pulse plan as well as the capability for video surveillance

ADT does not tell you upfront what the equipment costs will be for those three wireless packages, or for additional sensors. But, at the time of our review, they were advertising free equipment on all four monitoring packages with the required installation charge. The fine print at the bottom of the page indicated that installation charges can be as high as $399 (or more!), depending on the system chosen, and that the free equipment offer is only valid for customers who sign a 3-year contract. This is quite steep compared with alarm systems in our review that take a more do-it-yourself approach to installation.

In short, ADT (1-866-238-9934) is a great choice for customers who need dependable alarm systems with all the bells and whistles and who are willing to pay extra for reputability and professional installation.

Live Watch

LIVE WATCH Visit Site

Features:

Equipment costs starting at $99

Activation fee of $19.95

1-year contract, then month-to-month

24/7 monitoring starting at $34.95/month

Created by a Kansas paramedic who knew first-hand that alarm systems could make all the difference during an emergency, LiveWatch seeks to provide exceptionally-quick communication and response times. In just a decade, LiveWatch has acquired more than 200,000 customers, and the company prioritizes treating each one as if they were a family member.

Every LiveWatch plan includes 24/7 monitoring, remote arm and disarm, LiveVoice Assist (which allows you to talk directly to the control panel in an emergency), and the ASAPer alert system that can be used to resolve alarms from a smartphone or computer. Alarm system monitoring packages include the following:

  • Mobile Pro: basic coverage for $34.95/month
  • Total Home: all the basics of the Mobile Pro, and additional features that include smartphone controls, home automation, and smart image capture, for $39.95/month
  • Total Home + Video: as the name suggests, all the features of the Total Home package, with the add-on of live video streaming and an included security camera, for $49.95/month

To begin protecting your home with a LiveWatch alarm system, you'll need to select an equipment package. There are two main options: the Plug&Protect Basic ($99) and the Plug&Protect IQ ($299). The lower-priced package includes a somewhat old-school GE Keypad Alarm Panel, 2 wireless door sensors, 1 wireless motion detector, a siren, 2 yard signs, 6 window stickers, and a keychain remote. The IQ set includes everything in the Basic package, but the GE Keypad is replaced by a 7" Android touchscreen panel with dual-band connectivity and a built-in camera. Additional products are available at an additional price, such as door sensors ($29 each), motion sensors ($78 each), and keychain remotes ($30 each). The monthly monitoring pricing covers as many devices as you choose to incorporate in your alarm system, with no difference in cost.

Unlike many of their competitors, LiveWatch doesn't require you to commit to using their service for years in advance. Instead, they will have you sign a 1-year contract, after which the plan switches to month-to-month coverage. Another positive is that LiveWatch offers a superb money-back guarantee: if you cancel your service within the initial year of your contract, you can get a full refund when you return the alarm system equipment, with no fees for cancellation or restocking.

We did experience some problems trying to match up the description of what LiveWatch offers in their Total Home Packages with the products available to add to our shopping cart in the checkout process. When we selected the highest price point of equipment (IQ) and coverage (Total Home + Video), there was no option to add the products that would be included, like smartphone-controlled thermostats. The representative we reached via live chat (which had popped up right when we first went to the site, with a message offering to answer any questions and promoting available discounts on the $99 starter kit) told us that the site was still a work in progress. The representative then gave us a link to another, external site with home automation products, but there was no explanation as to how those products could be added to our desired alarm system.

We also noticed that the IQ system was priced at $99 in our online shopping cart, even though it was listed as $299 elsewhere- not a bad "problem" to have, yet still representative of the glitches on the LiveWatch website. Similarly, we loved seeing that LiveWatch had a 4.6/5-star rating as a Google seller, but the link provided led to a page saying that rating details were not available for LiveWatch.

Fortunately, we felt that the customer service representative was very friendly and knowledgeable when answering all of our questions and helping us build an alarm system that would address our needs, even if the site itself may be having a few technical difficulties. We did encounter many customers who praised the service and coverage they received with their LiveWatch alarm system, so they may be worth considering as you choose your next security package for your home. LiveWatch earns a high rating, and we hope to see continued improvements with their website.

Vivint

VIVINT Visit Site

Features:

FREE equipment and installation with some packages

Up to $198 in activation fees

Packages start at $53.99/month

If you want an alarm system with cutting edge bells and whistles, Vivint will probably get your attention. From Nest thermostats to Amazon Echo, Vivint's alarm systems let you change your home's temperature, keep an eye on your kids while the babysitter is there, or even remotely unlock your door from any internet-connected device.

Each of Vivint's alarm system packages include the following:

  • SkyControl Panel: described as "like having an iPad on your wall", it displays video, controls temperature, manages system options, and provides an intuitive smart home experience. Users can also talk live with a monitoring professional through the panel in an emergency.
  • Sky App: puts control in the palm of your hand through Vivint's smartphone app. Control your home's temperature, locks, lights and more, remotely arm and disarm your wireless home security system, even see live video of your front porch from the Vivint Doorbell Camera.
  • Home Security sensors and controls: all packages include 3 wireless door/window sensors, motion sensor, key fob, control panel, power adapter and battery, and cellular card that installs into the control panel. Other available products for Vivint's monitoring include doorbell and outdoor cameras, Ping cameras, 24/7 video recording, garage door controls, smart locks, Amazon Echo, and Element thermostats.
  • 24/7 monitoring

In order to set up your Vivint alarm system, you'll need to choose from one of their three monitoring packages:

  • Smart Protect, which covers the basics of door and window sensors, motion detectors, and smoke detectors. This plan starts at $53.99/month.
  • Smart Protect & Control, which includes monitoring of two additional smart home services. These services include a doorbell cam, door lock, thermostat, garage door controller, outdoor video, and HD video recording indoors. This plan starts at $60.99/month.
  • Smart Complete, which includes monitoring of three additional smart home services, as well as 1 Terabyte of secure cloud storage (which is strangely named "Space Monkey").

Vivint offers free equipment and installation with certain packages, which keeps them competitive with other providers of alarm systems. But, make sure to pay attention to the fine print before signing on the dotted line: depending on where you live, you'll need to make a staggering five-year commitment (four years in a handful of states) with a monitoring package of at least $60.99/month in order to qualify for the "free" equipment and installation. Vivint's site doesn't seem to indicate that they offer a customer satisfaction guarantee, making a five-year commitment (or paying the remaining contract balance) too much for many customers. Also, if you change addresses, you'll be assessed a $99 moving fee if you've been a customer of Vivint for less than 12 months; the fee is eliminated if you renew your alarm system contract at your new residence and you've been a customer for at least a year.

Vivint does have an optional warranty and service plan for an extra $10/month. Under this coverage, they will repair and/or replace any defective part of the alarm system at no extra cost. Without this extra Premium service plan, the warranty period is only 120 days past installation; after that point in time, Vivint will provide replacement parts at no extra charge, but you'll pay a $49 fee plus tax for the service call.

What's the bottom line for pricing on Vivint's alarm systems? The best answer is "it depends". Vivint does not make it easy to determine their package pricing, requiring customers to work with a company representative. (We even used the chat function on the website and got the answer that pricing is only offered over the phone or in person.) Many customer reviews complain about insistent salespeople coming to their homes late at night and rushing people into 5-year contracts without being open about the length of the commitment. And, with every feature you add, you'll pay more-so with base packages starting at $53.99, Vivint is easily one of the costliest alarm systems we reviewed.

We were pleased to see Vivint's A- rating with the Better Business Bureau. However, there have been almost 4,000 complaints registered with the BBB in the last three years.

In general, Vivint's alarm systems leave us with mixed feelings. If your security system must have the most high-tech components and you've got money to spare, Vivint isn't a bad option to consider. Just don't overlook the fact that you're making a five-year commitment, and be prepared to assert yourself to get help from customer service if you experience any problems with your equipment post-installation. Vivint earns good marks for their alarm system packages.

Get Safe

Features:

$249 for equipment starter kit

No installation fees

No monthly contract

Monitoring plans cost $19-$29/month

If you like the sound of a contract-free alarm system with easy-to-understand monthly pricing for dependable monitoring, GetSafe will quickly rise to the top of your list of favorites.

In an industry where providers seem to say "Gotcha!" with exclusions in the fine print, lengthy contracts, cancellation and/or moving fees, and additional charges for every device you choose to have monitored, GetSafe is a breath of fresh air. Although you will have to purchase your equipment -the Starter Kit costs $249 and includes 1 Smart Hub, 1 door/window sensor, 1 (pet-friendly) motion detector, and 1 alarm siren, with additional sensors and devices available for purchase/monitoring-your monthly monitoring costs stay the same regardless of the number of sensors or other devices you add to your alarm system.

GetSafe offers two monitoring plans with no hidden costs:

  • Self-Monitoring: for $19/month, you get reliable, DIY-style home security monitoring through the GetSafe app with AT&T Cellular back-up, video cloud storage, and push/email notifications for any alerts you may receive
  • 247/7 Professional Monitoring: for $29/month, you get all of the features included in the cheaper package, while adding 24/7 coverage from GetSafe’s USA-based monitoring centers. Their representatives will notify you in the event of a break-in or other detected problem and dispatch emergency responders if needed

Customers who live in Michigan, Illinois, Maryland, or Rhode Island who want the professionally-monitored alarm system package should check with the company for availability updates, as GetSafe only offered self-monitoring services at the time of our review.

That's all there is to it. Your GetSafe alarm system uses a Smart Hub to control all of your sensors and other devices, using your home WiFi or the installed AT&T 3G cellular connection should you lose your WiFi signal. (You do need to connect the Smart Hub to your router.) This Smart Hub can control and monitor an impressive 64 security devices and supports up to 32 individual users. Some of the additional security devices available, beyond the initial Starter Kit alarm system package, include the following:

  • Cameras, including motion-detecting models
  • Flood sensors
  • Smoke detectors
  • Nest thermostat
  • Siren

And, it's all included with your monthly monitoring package - regardless of the number of devices you connect (up to the Hub's 64-device capacity limit). No other alarm system can compete with this level of coverage for the price.

Customer reviews describe an amazingly easy do-it-yourself installation process: less than 20 minutes to install the items in the Starter Kit. Once you've installed your GetSafe alarm system's sensors, you'll use the smartphone app to activate them. GetSafe's representatives are easily reached and will help you test the system if you're still not sure if it's functioning properly. Be aware that if you have family members without smartphones (such as young children) who need to be able to control the GetSafe components, you'll want to buy the key fob that will allow them to enable and disable the alarm system.

GetSafe's customer service also stands out. Our questions were answered by very knowledgeable representatives who didn't use pushy sales tactics to persuade us to make a purchase, and we easily got the help we needed via their toll-free number (888-799-6255) and their online chat staff. If you need help figuring out exactly which alarm system components you'll need for your apartment, dorm room, or home, their reps will pleasantly walk you through the process- without trying to upsell components that you don't really want. GetSafe's return policy is similarly customer-friendly: within 14 days of receiving your alarm system equipment, you can return it for a 100% refund, minus any shipping costs.

GetSafe may be a newer addition to the alarm system market, but they already impress us with their no-hassle packages and pricing, easy DIY installation, and excellent track record for keeping customers happy.

$229.99 for equipment starter kit

No installation fees

No monthly contract

Monitoring plans cost $14.99-$24.99/month

Promoted by celebrities such as Dave Ramsey and more, SimpliSafe sells wireless alarm systems with do-it-yourself installation and zero long-term commitments. Like the majority of no-contract alarm systems, SimpliSafe does require customers to buy their equipment outright. With a minimum price of $229.99 for the starter set, that's not an insignificant amount of money, but their low monitoring costs of $25/month or less definitely result in savings over time when compared with most contract-based alarm systems.

What comes with the SimpliSafe starter package? Best for dorms, small homes and apartments, this set includes one base station and wireless keypad, one entry sensor, one motion sensor, and one keychain remote for $229.99. Larger packages include the Economy package, which adds two more entry sensors for a total cost of $259.99; the Classic package, which adds a smoke detector and siren to the Economy set, for a cost of $349.99; the Master package, with a total of two motion sensors and six entry sensors, along with the smoke detector and siren, for $449. 87; and, finally, the Ultimate package for $539.85, which includes two motion sensors, four entry sensors, the siren and smoke detector, along with a panic button, water sensor, carbon monoxide detector, and freeze sensor.

If you need some extra savings, SimpliSafe is the only alarm system we found that has the option of buying refurbished equipment. You could save as much as 30% on the purchase of your package if you're comfortable with using pre-owned gear.

SimpliSafe breaks down their monitoring packages into two basic plans:

  • Standard, which includes standard round-the clock protection.
  • Interactive, which allows you to access the app to monitor your home activity and control settings directly from your laptop or smartphone. We also saw several references to a Secret! Alerts bonus that can alert you when someone opens a private area (for example, a gun safe or a liquor cabinet) but we couldn’t find further information as to which sensors would be necessary or to set that up within the alarm system.

We were impressed by SimpliSafe's free shipping on all orders, a 3-year product warranty, and an excellent money-back guarantee for 60 days after purchase.

But, we felt that SimpliSafe came up short in two critical ways. First, most modern alarm systems include the use of technology to control everything from arming the system to changing the temperature in the home, while SimpliSafe charges more (via the more costly monitoring plan) just to be able to use their app to change the system's settings. With respect to technology, SimpliSafe also doesn't yet offer thermostat controls, door locks, or camera monitoring, though many of their competitors do.

In addition, we were dismayed by a significant number of customers who complained that they woke up multiple times to false alarms, and that the monitoring service took up to five minutes to contact the homeowner in response. Those same customers often had problems getting a prompt reply from SimpliSafe's customer service department when attempting to get to the bottom of the problem (which often seemed to be related to switching the alarm system's cellular connection from T-Mobile to Verizon or vice-versa).

Because of the expensive start-up costs and the less-than-perfect customer reviews, we encourage you to start with one of the smaller, less expensive packages for your SimpliSafe alarm system. This will give you the opportunity to fully test the system and use the 60-day return policy if necessary. SimpliSafe earns a good rating.

Guardian Protection Services

GUARDIAN PROTECTION SERVICES Visit Site

Features:

Professional installation

Award-winning 24/7 monitoring

Guardian Protection Services brings 60 years of experience to the alarm system industry and recently included wireless-based packages in their offerings. We were surprised to find out that Guardian only services a few geographic areas themselves (which we discovered hidden away in the About Us section of the website); all other regions are "serviced by Guardian authorized dealers"

This Pennsylvania-based provider of alarm systems has four basic plans for equipment and monitoring:

  • Edge Essential: standard equipment package of a color touchscreen control keypad, 3 door/window sensors and 1 motion sensor, yard sign and window decals, wireless/cellular coverage, 24/7 professional monitoring, Guardian VoiceLink (two-way voice communication with the monitoring center), and geo-services (which allow you to set up an arm/disarm event trigger if you forget to set the system when you leave the perimeter of your yard or other location)
  • Edge Control: this package includes the sensors and features of the Essential plan and adds 1 door lock, 1 thermostat, 2 light modules, and 1 garage door switch
  • Edge Plus: all the features of Edge Control, with an added motion sensor with a built-in camera, giving you a visual image of what triggered the motion detector
  • Edge Premium: everything in the Edge Plus package, plus 2 indoor WiFi cameras with night vision

To determine what you'll pay for your Guardian Protection Services' alarm system, you will need to make an appointment to speak with one of their specialists. From what we were able to discover, monitoring and equipment packages start at $34.99 and go up sharply from there. Guardian requires professional installation of any equipment, and we would prefer more transparency regarding costs-both for the installation itself as well as a pricing baseline for their different alarm system packages.

We also would like to see more obvious information on the Guardian site with respect to the required contracts for their services. We found reviews describing three-year contracts with steep cancellation fees; one frustrated customer was billed for their alarm system even after their house had burned to the ground and took a year to rebuild, even though they notified Guardian of their situation.

On a more positive note, Guardian Protection Services has received multiple accolades. For example, their monitoring center was given a five diamond rating by the Central Station Alarm Association. Guardian also maintains an A+ rating and accreditation with the Better Business Bureau, and they were given the Super Service Award by Angie's List.

We would gladly raise Guardian's rating with evidence of increased transparency in their pricing, both for alarm system monitoring and for installation, and in the terms of their service contract.

Award-winning 24/7 monitoring

AlarmForce boasts more than two decades of experience in the alarm systems industry. Begun primarily with traditional wire-based systems, AlarmForce has kept up with market trends by incorporating newer technologies in their alarm system packages.

Before considering AlarmForce, you should be aware that their service area is extremely limited, and we might not even have realized it if we hadn't seen the "Service Locations" link at the bottom of the page, under the heading labeled "Support". According to that page, the only areas served by AlarmForce at the time of our review were Canada and selected metro areas in Ohio and North Carolina. Regrettably, even with the most competitive pricing and service, they wouldn't be able to offer the protection of an alarm system to most customers in the United States.

If you do happen to live in AlarmForce's coverage area, their services include the following:

  • Secure: for $29.99/month, you get a touchscreen control panel, 1 motion detector, and 2 door contacts with 24/7 monitoring
  • Connect: for $39.99/month, you get a touchscreen control panel, 2 motion detectors, and 3 door contacts; access via mobile app, and real-time notifications
  • Control: for $44.99/month, you get a touchscreen control panel, 1 motion detector, 3 door contacts, 1 image sensor, 1 smoke/heat/freeze detector, Z-Wave control for home automation for add-on features like indoor/outdoor/doorbell cameras, smart thermostats, smart door locks and light bulbs, and garage door controllers

We also spotted a promotion to get the first three months of monitoring coverage for free, but no further information was provided to tell customers how to qualify for that special pricing.

A positive aspect of AlarmForce's alarm systems is the free lifetime warranty, with zero fees for labor, replacement parts, or equipment. Many of their competitors charge, at the very least, a service call fee even for equipment covered under warranty, so this does give AlarmForce an edge in the few markets they serve.

Additionally, their monitoring service has won a five-diamond rating for providing excellent attention to customers: one of only two providers of alarm systems in our review to have earned that award.

In short, if your home is in Canada or one of AlarmForce's regions of coverage in North Carolina or Ohio, they might meet your home protection needs quite well; but, because their service area is so drastically limited, we can only give AlarmForce a lower rating at this time.

Alarm Systems have a wide variety of features, coverage, and price points. Some Alarm Systems charge hundreds of dollars for installation in addition to their monitoring services, while others offer free equipment and/or installation along with a monthly monitoring contract. The best Alarm Systems provide customers with flexible options with respect to installation and home phone line requirements.

As you consider which Alarm System will best meet your protection needs, it is wise to have a grasp of several common features offered by home security companies. These include:

  • Monitoring Service. Does the company provide live, round-the-clock home monitoring with live representatives who will respond quickly to contact authorities in the event of a burglary or other incident?
  • Equipment and Installation Costs. Is there a charge for the initial equipment package, or is it included with the monitoring service? How many sensors are included in that package, and how much will it cost to get the number of sensors your home needs? Will you be charged separately for installation?
  • Guarantee. Are you protected by a satisfaction guarantee and/or a warranty on your Alarm System equipment?
