Blue Nile is the world's largest online retailer of certified diamonds and fine jewelry. In fact, Internet Retailer Magazine reports that Blue Nile is bigger than the next three largest online jewelers combined. This is no accident; since their founding in 1999, Blue Nile has built its success on a strong tradition of quality and service unmatched by their competition.
The Blue Nile website is organized in a very straightforward, easy to understand layout. Across the top of the home page, you are provided with quick links to Engagement, Jewelry, Watches & Accessories, Gift Ideas, and Education. Along the left side of the page you also have quick links to Earrings, Necklaces, Bracelets, and the ability to shop by material - Diamonds, Pearls, Gemstones, Platinum, Gold, and Silver.
As if this wasn't enough, Blue Nile also provides you with the ability to search for loose diamonds, or shop for gifts by price range.
Once you've selected a type of jewelry, you further refine your selection by type and price. For example, if you select Necklaces, you can choose from 15 different types including diamond, pearl, and gold. You also select a price range, so you don't have to waste your time sifting through dozens of items you're not interested in. This process is simple and intuitive.
The selection offered by Blue Nile is staggering. Their single warehouse sells as much jewelry as nearly 200 stores combined. With this much inventory, Blue Nile can afford to offer jewelry at prices that are often 30-35% lower than their competition.
For those interested in engagement rings, Blue Nile is actually the largest seller of engagement rings in the U.S. To achieve this notable ranking, they offer an extensive selection of engagement rings in classic settings. For those interested in something more unique, Blue Nile also provides a comprehensive "Build-Your-Own-Ring" process. With scores of settings and over 60,000 loose diamonds to
choose from, you can be confident that you can create the perfect ring for your special bride.
To ensure the quality of their diamonds, every loose diamond sold is accompanied by a grading report from either GIA or AGSL, independent diamond grading labs with the most stringent grading scales. This gives you, the consumer, an independent verification of the quality of your purchase.
Blue Nile brings a very customer-focused approach to everything they do. They have extensive educational material throughout their website that explains everything from diamond quality to platinum purity. Once an order is placed, they offer free FedEx shipping with every purchase. Most orders placed before 3pm est are delivered with same-day shipping. And, Blue Nile offers one of the best refund policies
in the industry: if you're not satisfied with your order for any reason, you can return it for a refund or exchange within 30 days - no questions asked. Their phone operators are knowledgeable and friendly, and were able to assist with any questions we asked.
Blue Nile sets the standard by which all other online diamond retail stores are measured. With a luxurious shopping experience, incredible selection, and low prices, Blue Nile earns our highest rating.
Super Jeweler is a terrific find when shopping online for jewelry and diamonds. True, they don't offer the high-end selection of expensive jewelry that some other stores provide. Instead, Super Jeweler focuses on providing good quality jewelry at rock-bottom prices that everyone can afford. If you're looking for great deals on good jewelry, you'll have to look a long time to find a better store than Super
The Super Jeweler website itself is fairly busy, with lots to look at and click on. The home page features a small selection of their best selling clearance items. On the left you'll find over a dozen different categories of jewelry, from Earrings and Bracelets to Pendants and Rings. They also provide you with quick links to Sale Items, New Items, and Most Popular Items.
Clicking on these categories will present you with sub-categories of items to help you narrow down your search. For example, clicking on the Earrings category presents you with 7 sub-categories, including Diamond Studs, Diamond Hoops, Circles, Diamond Fashion, Three Diamond, Journey Diamond, and Platinum Diamond. You can also narrow your selections by Price or Weight. We found these options extremely helpful
in finding exactly what we were looking for.
Now for the best part. Super Jeweler provides a large selection of quality merchandise at some of the lowest prices you can find anywhere. We consistently found jewelry pieces that were 50-70% off retail prices - sometimes more. And these aren't ugly castoffs that nobody else wants - these are good quality, attractive pieces that would look good in anyone's jewelry collection. We were very pleasantly
surprised at the attractiveness of the pieces, and consistently impressed at the discounted prices they were offered at.
While Super Jeweler does an excellent job at providing good quality items at low prices, they do fall short in when it comes to higher-end pieces. They provide an excellent range of jewelry in the price range of $100 to $2,000, but the selection dwindles quickly for items priced over $2,000. If you're looking for high-end, one of a kind pieces, you'll have better luck at some of the other stores in our review. For
example, when shopping for bridal sets, center diamonds are offered in Solitaire or Princess cuts up to 1-1/2 carat in total weight. But if you're looking for a center diamond larger than a carat and a half, you'll need to shop elsewhere.
Super Jeweler offers free shipping in the mainland United States and military addresses for every item they carry. If you're in a hurry, they also offer expedited shipping, including overnight. Super Jeweler also offers a 100% return guarantee on every item they sell. If you're not completely satisfied with your purchase for any reason, you can return it for a complete refund.
Super Jeweler provides excellent value for your money when it comes to diamonds and jewelry. While their website may not be the flashiest around, their quality and prices are top notch. And their 100% satisfaction guarantee eliminates any risk on your part. Super Jeweler truly deserves a place in your list of favorite stores to shop at.
Szul is a crisp, clean, straightforward site. The home page includes convenient links to Diamond, Bridal, Gemstone or Featured Collections. Most items are very affordably priced with an impressive selection of certified high-end loose diamonds. Specialty sections include a great gift boutique, pearl jewelry, men's accessories, best sellers, birthstone jewelry and a clearance section where the bargain shopper can save up
to 75% off.
The selection at Szul is very generous. Not only do they have a large collection of traditional jewelry, they also have unique pieces that you don't see everyday. Engraved antique-looking pieces, two-tone items, and rope pieces are a few examples we didn't see on other sites.
The loose diamond search is consistent with other high-end sites we reviewed. Unfortunately, Szul does not put as much emphasis on price sorting as other sites. Shopping by price is only offered at the Gift Boutique and Best Seller's link.
Szul offers several services to ensure your confidence. They offer a 30-day money back guarantee for all purchases, with the exception of certified loose diamonds, which have a 15-day guarantee. They also have a repair guarantee of 60 days. Free insured FedEx service is standard for all purchases. Customer service is available by phone, fax or email. Shoppers can also enter to win a diamond circle pendant from Szul.
All in all, Szul is a very good site, providing a wide range of pieces sure to satisfy shoppers of all budgets.
Jared, "The Galleria of Jewelry", offers a number of retail locations across the U.S. They also bring much of their quality selection to their online stores for shoppers that like the convenience of shopping from home. In business since 1929, Jared's parent company Sterling Inc has significant experience offering both quality made jewelry and a strong customer experience.
Jared offers a nice array of earrings, bracelets, watches, charms, rings and more. We especially liked the option to create a ring by choosing the stone and setting. Jared also provides a selection of pre-made rings for those that prefer a designers touch. This company works with approximately a dozen different designers across their jewelry line. The watch selection is from big names such as Movado, Gucci, Citizen, Bulova,
Swiss Army and more. Jared is also a big retailer of Pandora charms and made shopping for trinkets quick and simple.
Searching the selection is relatively straightforward, You may choose from a handful of categories such as wedding and engagement, diamonds, gemstones, watches, and more. Jared is big in the business of diamond rings and that showed in their selection. However, their sterling silver earrings and other lower-end jewelry options were not as in-depth. Prices at Jared appear to be competitive with companies offering a similar
For those on a mission to find a good deal, Jared's Vault Values provides a nice sized selection of various jewelry that is on sale or specially priced for a short period of time. You won't find many items under $250 but for bargain shopping we wouldn't recommend Jared's anyway.
Should you not be satisfied with your Jared purchase you have up to 30 days to return or exchange for a full refund to a store or shipped back direct to the company. Watches fall under the same return policy but may not show signs of wear. However, custom designed or engraved jewelry does not come with a refund option. Jared also provides a diamond and color gemstone jewelry lifetime guarantee. They do require that every
6-months, inspections have been performed at Jared. The lifetime guarantee comes with stone replacement, a mounting guarantee, and free cleaning.
Jared provides customers quality made, attractive jewelry. Their focus is on diamond rings and gemstones but offers a nice selection of attractive jewelry and watches across the board. The 30 day, no hassle, return policy allows shoppers to feel confident with their purchase. If you're looking for a nice jewelry selection, especially diamond rings, from a quality company Jared is worth a 2nd look.
Jewelry offers a unique jewelry shopping experience. Unlike other traditional jewelry stores, diamond engagement rings is not the focus. Started in 2001, the selection is derived from a handful of well known designers and larger selection of options under $100 than most jewelry websites. Jewelry also works alongside Fashion Week to match beautiful and creative jewelry with the latest clothing fashions.
The website functionality is straightforward and easy to move through. Simply choose between jewelry type, collection, designers or clearance. Once you have made a selection you may further narrow down by price, jewelry type, stone, material and more. We found the birthstone options to be much larger than most sites. The jewelry at this website was not predictable and we enjoyed seeing some of the latest options. We found
a wide range of prices ranging from $17 to $200,000. Most jewelry is priced below $500.00, and even much less depending on whether you're shopping for earrings, diamonds, bracelets or rings.
The different designer's provided a wide range of looks from men's jewelry, to very girly Jessica Simpson choices, and darker trinkets from Rock & Redemption. The looks really run the gamut at Jewelry - something you don't find at many jewelry stores. We liked that they used diamonds and silver together along with multi-colored stones to create the latest looks.
If you aren't satisfied with your purchase at Jewelry you can count on a 30 day no hassle return policy. We also appreciated free shipping on all orders.
Overall, the Jewelry shopping experience was positive. It's not for diamond engagement ring shoppers, but you'll find a lot of high quality jewelry that's priced fair and unique to many other websites. We liked how Jewelry helps both educate and dress the customer with the latest fashion trends.
Many people in the U.S. have run across a Kay Jeweler store at some point in the last 20 or 30 years. Kay is a common name at many malls across the nation. Kay also provides their jewelry selection through their website for those that like the selection but prefer to shop from the comfort of their home. In business since 1929, Kay's parent company Sterling Inc has significant experience offering both quality made jewelry
and a strong customer experience. However, we found the Kay brand selection to have some less attractive options we had to weed through to find what we were looking for.
Kay provides customers engagement and wedding rings, diamond and gemstones, gold, silver, watches, custom made jewelry and more. Kay does offer a wonderful design a ring option that is available at other Sterling Inc companies. The customer may choose the diamond and setting exactly as they prefer. We appreciated the lower priced silver options at Kay for those looking for a nice gift under $100.00. The watch selection
at Kay is from designers such as Movado, Citizen, Bulova, Swiss Army and Jane Seymore. Kay is also a retailer of an unattractive line of couples jewelry, ambiagram, and multi-colored jewelry.
Searching the selection at Kay is pretty straightforward. You simply choose from the top list of categories and then drill down as needed. Most categories do not have an over abundance of selection so it doesn't take long to sort through more than 10 or 15 items in each section. As far as pricing goes, Kay offers selections at the lower end of a traditional jewelry store. Their options are more affordable for those with
a smaller budget.
Alike the other Sterling Inc companies, if you are not satisfied with your Kay purchase you have up to 30 days to return or exchange for a full refund to a store or shipped back direct to the company. Watches fall under the same return policy but may not show any signs of wear. Custom designed, engraved or ambiagram jewelry does not come with a refund option. Kay provides a diamond and color gemstone jewelry lifetime guarantee.
They do require that every 6-months, inspections be performed at Kay to maintain the guarantee. The lifetime guarantee comes with stone replacement, a mounting guarantee, and free cleaning.
Kay Jeweler provides customers quality made, affordable jewelry. Unfortunately, a portion of the jewelry options are unattractive and have to be weeded through to find better choices. The 30 day, no hassle, return policy allows shoppers to feel confident with their purchase. Kay doesn't have an over abundance of beautiful or contemporary jewelry options but if you are on a budget you might consider a look at Kay's selection.
Ice is a little less "polished" than other jewelry sites. However, the layout of the site is easy to navigate. Categories across the top of the homepage include shop by price, rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants, necklaces and watches. Each of the categories has sub groupings to refine the category further and all include the "ICE Picks" which
are the bestsellers of the category. Other quick links on the site include: What's New, Clearance Sale, Wedding Boutique, Best Sellers, Gift Boutique, and Designers & Collections.
Prices are competitive with all jewelry marked down from the retail value to an ICE Price (30-50% lower), which is then broken down further into an easy payment price. The designer showcase on this site is better than we have seen which is a nice feature if you are looking for a particular item or prefer a particular designer.
Ice offers shipping via FedEx or USPS. Orders over $150 are shipped for free. As with other jewelry sites, Ice has a 30-day risk free money back guarantee. Free gift boxing is also available which is a nice touch. Customer service is available by phone seven days a week with normal retail business hours or by live help on-line. Ice's watch selection was impressive and more extensive than other sites reviewed.
Overall, Ice is a good site with much of the same jewelry and pricing you would find at a mall jewelry store.
Jewelry Television is a busy site. The homepage concentrates on two areas: keeping you informed on which Jewelry Television shows are airing and the four main shopping categories on the site. The site is categorized by jewelry, gemstones, clearance, auctions and jeweler supplies. Once you select a category, the subcategories are extensive. You can search by type, price, gemstone, or metal type. The subcategories are conveniently
listed down the right side of the page with the total number of items in each category. They also list "specialty shops" on the left side of each page which include brooches, men's jewelry, accessories, collectibles, elite, tanzanite and charisma. The major categories are grouped in the middle of the page with the option of selecting only the diamond items in each category.
Price is a major factor on this site. The overall selection is average with not a lot of high-end items; the site clearly caters to the average jewelry enthusiast much like the jewelry store at the mall. Jewelry Television offers a 30-day guarantee for a refund or exchange if not completely satisfied. Items are shipped via USPS or FedEx upon request. Shipping is not offered for free like most of the other sites reviewed.
Jewelry Television has a "learning library" section to help you with any jewelry questions you may have. The library appears to host a vast amount of information; however, it is not organized in an inviting fashion. Customer service is available by phone or customer email form. Jewelry Television also offers an e-mail newsletter and a shopping spree sweepstakes.
Overall, Jewelry Television ranks average. The prices are enticing but the lack of selection and unique pieces is a downfall.
Netaya opened shop in 2000 and call themselves the, "premier online destination for fine designer jewelry at incredible prices". Much of Netaya's online marketing is focused around saving money and big discounts.
Netaya offers a huge selection of jewelry across the board. From silver, gold and platinum to rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and charms the options seem endless. You'll also find diamond engagement rings in a few diamond cuts. As a result of such a large selection, a well functioning website in important for a positive shopping experience.
Unfortunately, we found that Netaya didn't have a great website. When looking at diamond rings we were only able to define metal type, carat size range, and price range. Results only provided round and princess cut diamonds - not a lot of choices for those looking for something else. When searching through silver rings we found an impressive 140 plus options to choose from. Unfortunately we could only narrow our search
by price and otherwise had to look through every option.
We also found that Netaya uses "created" or manufactured diamonds in many of their products. If you are shopping at Netaya please make sure you know exactly what you are getting with your purchase. Many of the design options are traditional and common in nature. We struggled to find anything that was very interesting or fresh. With the focus at Netaya being price, we weren't surprised that the selection lacked
designs we could not get excited about.
If you aren't satisfied with your purchase at Netaya you may return within 30 days for an exchange or full refund. However, custom engraved items may not be returned. Netaya also offers free shipping on all purchases. We unfortunately looked for customer satisfaction across the internet and found a number of people that were extremely dissatisfied with the quality of jewelry they received from Netaya. Also, efforts to
resolve the matter with Netaya were often ignored and the overall customer service experience was poor.
As a result of lack luster selection, questionable quality and a history of poor customer service Netaya didn't fair well in our review. If you're looking for a quality piece of jewelry for yourself or as a gift we recommend you shop from a higher ranked company.
Diamonds International is a New York based company that has been in the jewelry business for over 20 years. With over 125 locations around the world many people have encountered this company while visiting an international port of call during a cruise excursion. Diamonds International also sells much of their selection online for those that prefer to shop from the convenience of their home computer.
Diamonds International offers diamond rings, bracelets, necklaces, watches and more. Despite the name, Diamonds International is not the mega-center of diamond selection. In fact, they offered no diamond stud earrings and the selection of engagement and wedding rings were limited to very generic offerings.
The sales pitch on many cruise lines is that Diamonds International offers very affordable jewelry prices. Much of the selection of jewelry at Diamond's International is unique and hard to compare for pricing. However, the solitaire diamond selection did allow us to compare and contrast pricing to other companies. We found prices to be significantly higher at Diamonds International than companies offering higher quality
diamonds of the same cut and size.
The Diamonds International website is rather straightforward with easy searching and additional options to further drill down. However, the selection within almost all categories was not overly abundant and offered far less variety than many companies ranked higher. On a positive note, the company offers a 30 day money back guarantee as well as some in house financing for those that qualify.
During our search we also found a number of unhappy customers that felt bait and switch occurred during their international shopping experience. We also found several reports of shabby craftsmanship. We were not able to confirm the same experiences for online shoppers but felt it was worthy of mentioning.
Overall, Diamonds International failed to impress with a smaller selection, higher pricing and some questions about quality and customer satisfaction reviews we that uncovered. If you are shopping for jewelry we recommend you shop from a higher ranked company.
Palm Beach Jewelry is an inviting site to shop for fashion jewelry. The site is easy to navigate with only three main sections: Women's Jewelry, Men's Jewelry, and Fragrances. They have a couple of specialty store links that also offer a wedding shop and an internet exclusive steals and deals, and a plus size ring selection.
The women's category has everything from rings and earrings to anklets and body jewelry. The men's section ranges from rings and bracelets to pens and personalized jewelry. Both men's and women's fragrances are sold in gift sets and regular sizes; all marked down 10-50% off retail prices. Not an extensive selection of fragrances but some name brand notables. The jewelry is also marked down 30-50% off retail.
One old cliché that comes to mind on this site is quality over quantity, which is lacking at Palm Beach Jewelry. 90% of the wedding boutique is Cubic Zirconium, and the specific details for the diamond jewelry is vague. If you're shopping for fashion or "costume" jewelry, Palm Beach Jewelry has a great selection and prices to match.
Customer service is available by phone, email, online chat and regular mail. Returns and exchanges are accepted within 90 days of the original order date. Shipping is free for orders over $75 via UPS. A printed catalog is also available if you prefer to take your time and shop on paper.
Compared to other sites reviewed, Palm Beach Jewelry is geared toward the fashion or "costume" jewelry market focusing on value priced merchandise. However, if you are looking for traditional jewelry selections, you'll have better luck elsewhere.
What You Should Look For When Buying a Diamond
A lot of people have this question. Buying a diamond is a commitment, so it’s understandable that you’d want to educate yourself thoroughly before taking the plunge. Even so, this goes beyond picking the right jewelry store or knowing what kind of setting you’d like. What you should look for when buying a diamond directly relates to the four C’s.
What Are the Four C’s?
The four C’s stands for carat, color, clarity, and cut. These are the main principles on which you should base your diamond purchasing decision. These attributes and their grading scales were developed by the Gemological Institute of America.
Carat The carat of a diamond is another term for weight. As an example, a 1-carat diamond weighs 200 milligrams. The weight of diamond you select depends on your budget and your preferences. A single large stone will cost more than several small ones. Still, the small ones could be of excellent quality.
Color The color of a diamond rates its color from white to yellow or brown. The whiter the diamond, the more valuable and the more beautiful. The grading system ranges from D (for white--very rare) to Z (brown). The closer to the letter “D” the color is graded, the more valuable the diamond will be.
Clarity The clarity of a diamond refers to how flawless it is. Flaws include pits, dips, cracks, scratches, and air bubbles. The grading system here ranges from F to I3. F stands for flawless, the rarest of diamonds. VVS stands for very, very slightly included. VS stands for very slightly included. S stands for slightly included. And finally, I stands for included. A diamond in the VVS-S range will be very attractive to the naked eye.
Cut The cut of a diamond refers to how it was cut by a jeweler. This is related to its shape, but does not refer directly to it. How a diamond is cut will effect how much light it reflects. The more precisely and symmetrically a diamond is cut, the more light it will reflect and the more shine and sparkle it will have. The highest cut grade is “Ideal.”
Other Factors When determining what you should look for when buying a diamond, of course you need to pay attention to the four C’s. Still, you also need to think about the shape of diamond you would want. They come in several styles with Round Brilliant being the most common. Other shapes include Princess, Emerald, and Oval.
Also consider where you’re buying the diamond from. Not just any jewelry store will do. They are all unique and it’s very easy to get ripped off if you don’t know what you’re looking for. A jewelry store should be GIA certified and it should have a good reputation with the BBB. Remember to look into these things because diamonds are expensive. Do your due diligence, just as you would with any other major purchase.
