For those who want a more personalized approach to their training, My Home Personal Trainer offers a Fit Pro membership which grants you access to workouts that are tailored to your needs, according to the fitness profile that is created for you once you take a survey. The Fit Pro membership also gives you fitness publications and information that is not included with the free membership.

The Fit Pro account starts with a 3-month plan at $13.99/mo and grows to a 1-year plan that is only $7.99/mo. For even more personalized training, and access to a real, human personal trainer that can guide and help track your progress through the workouts, My Home Personal Trainer offers a plan starting at $49.95 a month.

My Home Personal Trainer receives a high rating due to the flexibility of their programs. They offer a free, generic approach to your fitness needs, as well as an individual training program based on your specific needs. Plus, they can provide a real human personal trainer to give you the most in 1-on-1 training. If you're a self-starter and have a good grasp on working out and eating right, My Home Personal Trainer is a great resource for free workout and meal plans. On the other hand, if you want the approach and accountability of a real personal trainer coaching you through the process, My Home Personal Trainer gives you that option as well. For these reasons, they earn our highest rating.

Changing Shape

Changing Shape is an online personal training service that offers online access to personalize diet and workout advice through a certified personal trainer. Changing Shape is focused on the relationship between the trainer and the client and everything from diet to exercise and providing customized work-out plans.

Some content on the Changing Shape website is free to anyone. For example there are several detailed diet plans that anyone can access that give meal by meal plans based on a selection of criteria such as gender, calorie goal or other fitness goal such as a high protein diet. These free plans are fairly basic and there aren't a large number of them, so it's a nice side benefit of the program,

The real point of Changing Shape is to sign up for a plan and gain access to an actual personal trainer. After signing up for a 12 week or annual membership ($29.95 or $59.95 respectively) the client will be contacted by a certified personal trainer who will help determine fitness goals and work with you to set diet and work-out programs. The trainer is there to ensure the work-out is customized to each client, and the client can contact the trainer by e-mail at any time to get additional advice, alter work-out programs or just to get some encouragement. The $59.95 cost for the annual plan is a little higher than some of the other online personal trainer services we have reviewed, but some of the other services do not give the client this kind of frequent access to the personal trainer, so for anyone looking for a lot of direction and personal assistance, Changing Shape could be a great option.

The work-out plans offered by Changing Shape include some exercises that can be done at-home end some that require access to a gym. Consumers without gym access can simply customize their work-out programs to focus on all at home exercise, while clients with a gym membership can vary their work-outs even more by using their personal trainer to plan their work-outs at the gym.

Changing Shape provides a calendar to track progress and various fitness calculators that measure fat in common foods, daily protein requirements, body mass index (BMI) and other aspects of personal fitness. This allows each person to track their progress against their personal goals, and to adjust their work-outs and diet with the assistance of their trainer if they need to.

Overall we find Changing Shape to be a good value for anyone looking for a hands-on personal trainer experience heavy on guidance and personal customization.

Train With Me Online

Train With Me Online gives you a lot for your money. You can access most of this personal training website at no cost to you. The Train With Me Online home page has clean colors and is information-rich but a little busy.

Once you get your bearings and start to explore, you will find some very useful information and resources, accessible often at no cost. There are around 200 exercises fully demonstrated with videos, catering to almost all fitness needs. Each exercise has either iPod-ready instructions or printer-friendly versions so you can take them down to the gym with you if necessary. As with many of the other companies, you take a survey in the beginning that helps you decide your current fitness level and where you would like to be in the future. You can also track your progress as you reach that ideal body weight or image you have.

Many other companies offer a personal trainer who you may contact via email. Train with Me Online does not have that feature, but does have a strong community aspect to the website. In addition to online forums that you can post on, Train with Me Online also has searchable member profiles. Currently their community is at 84,000 and growing. As well as these interactive features, you can also find a lot of useful information, such as unbiased reviews of the latest fitness related products, equipment and dietary supplements.

There are subscription packages starting at $5.99, or to save 40% you can sign up for an annual fee of $42.99. There are no contracts, so you can cancel anytime you like.

Overall, we highly recommend you checkout Train with Me Online as an option for personal training. If you're looking for a 1-on-1 experience with a personal trainer, we suggest you go with one of the other companies in our review, but this is a great option if you have the discipline and knowledge base to push yourself. Train with Me Online is a strong, low cost option for your fitness needs.

Jillian Michaels is one of the most popular, and often dubbed as "hardest" personal trainers. She is well known for her role on the TV show "The Biggest Loser." Her success goes far beyond her TV show, she has created many different exercise videos, books and more to assist in losing weight.

Jillian Michaels credibility is extremely high, she is a certified American Fitness Association and National Endurance and Strength Training Association personal trainer with 19 years of experience. Her passion for physical health came out of her own story of being overweight and overcoming the odds to lose the weight and change her lifestyle forever.

Her website is more than just a fitness website, it has a wide range of tools and information for working out, eating right and making yourself healthier overall. Jillian's site focuses on interval cardio training and toning that includes weight training and a mixture of kickboxing, Pilates, calisthenics and martial arts.

The exercises are shown in step-by-step photos, explaining each part of the move. Unfortunately we found this much more difficult to follow, compared to the other sites reviewed that have actual videos to watch. For $4 a week, you receive access to an online weight tracker, fitness advice, calorie counter, weight-loss buddies, 100's of recipes, 151 printable exercises and more.

Jillian's credibility is high,but her website received such a low rating from us because of the cluttered DVD's, books, blog and more for sale. It was distracting from the ultimate goal of losing weight.

It is a great site to visit for motivation or if you would like to order a product of Jillian's, but we would recommend one of the many other websites that scored higher to utilize as an online personal trainer. We have personally used her DVD's but, that is different than her online personal training options.

iTrain

iTrain is the brainchild of Grace Lezenby and Sebastien Reant. The pair co-founded iTrain, when they saw the opportunity to make personal training convenient by bringing it to your MP3 player. Grace is the fitness guru with 15 years of experience in the Hollywood training industry and Sebastien is an entertainment industry executive whose knowledge and experience is behind the technology and music of iTrain.

The workouts found on iTrain focus on the following areas; cardio, sculpt & strength, stretch (yoga and Pilates), iTeenTrain (boxing and hip hop dancing), and an Album section that focuses on specific areas like golf conditioning, triathlon training, postnatal, and more.

You sign up for iTrain, select the workout of your choice, download to your MP3 player, and you are off to workout. The workouts are mostly audio versions for your MP3 player, but there are some videos and PDF files that show you how to perform certain moves. For a beginner it might be difficult not having videos for the whole workout. You can preview the videos of individual exercises without a membership.

The website is a little difficult to navigate, making it sometimes a challenge to find what you are looking for. The price of iTrain contributed to the low rating. This Hollywood based company has a Hollywood price tag attached.1 year, unlimited down loads is $149. That price averages to a very reasonable monthly rate, but if you don't like the program, you are stuck with the annual fee.

If you want to try a smaller commitment, there is a 3-month plan (get the 4th month free) that is $44.99, but you only get 3 downloads a month. That means you only get 3 workouts a month for that price. Almost all the other companies reviewed, have unlimited access to their workouts for their membership price. The A La Carte option let's you only pay for the workouts you want, but the average price is $10 per workout. That is close to a whole month membership price for other companies.

iTrain has quality workouts and an experienced personal training staff, but due to the price and limited videos for whole routines, iTrain received a low rating.

The programs offered by personal trainers vary greatly in customization and options. Some provide 1-on-1 contact with a personal trainer for both diet and exercise. Other programs are geared more for just exercise and workout programs. Still other personal trainers provide more of a one-size-fits-all approach to helping you achieve your goals.

Before deciding which personal trainer is best for you, consider the following important factors:

  • Customization. Will the personal trainer take note of your personal goals, likes, dislikes, and current physical ability? Will you work with a personal trainer 1-on-1, or is their workout program a one-size-fits-all approach?
  • Scope. You may be looking for both a diet and exercise option from your personal trainer. Make sure you know what their plans entail.
  • Cost. How does the cost for the personal trainer compare with others? Make sure you choose a trainer with a workout program that provides a good value.
  • Return Policy. If you're not satisfied with your personal trainer, can you get your money back?
