What is the best Acne product? Acne can affect anyone, regardless of age, ethnic background, or gender. This embarrassing, uncomfortable problem can not only be physically painful but can also impact a person's self-esteem, especially during childhood and adolescence.

Several factors contribute to the development of acne, including clogged pores from makeup and sunscreen, overproduction of oil, and even reactions to chemicals and other allergens. While it may be difficult to determine the exact cause of acne, there are many products on the market that can help reduce visible breakouts, as well as fighting some of the possible causes of acne from the inside out.

Murad

Los Angeles-based Murad has one of the most complete acne-fighting product lines available today. Whether you're looking for a way to heal post-acne scarring, prevent breakouts, or specifically target pores and blackheads, you'll find it on their online store.

If you choose one of their complete kits, you can expect the typical three-step regimen of Cleanse/Tone, Repair, and Hydrate. You'll follow those steps twice a day. In addition, Murad recommends that you make healthy lifestyle choices to help you get radiant, clear skin. (Unfortunately, the link to the Murad site that describes their Inclusive Health approach was broken when we tried to visit it.)

With more than 1500 customer reviews, Murad's Clear Skin Regimen is their most popular acne product. For just under $90, you'll get full-size bottles of Acne Clearing Solution, clarifying cleanser, and Oil-Control Mattifier (to control oil and reduce shine). You can expect this kit to last up to 90 days, making it an even better value for your investment. The primary ingredient in this and most of Murad's other acne-fighting products is salicylic acid, which helps dry up oily skin without producing the common side effects of dryness and overproduction usually seen with benzoyl peroxide. You'll use the cleanser and acne clearing solution both morning and evening, while only using the Mattifier in the morning, to keep your skin from looking shiny during the day. Murad does recommend that you use an evening moisturizer, but they don't include that product in this kit.

Murad has regular promotions that might save you some money or get you a fun freebie with your order. For example, at the time of our review, there was a discount of 20% if we signed up for their email newsletter, and a free 3-piece skincare gift plus bag with any purchase of at least $125. You can also save by choosing an autoship plan, but there's no requirement to do so.

The company also has a Beauty Rewards program that will earn points for every dollar you spend, plus double points for any product or kit that you opt to have sent on an auto-delivery plan. Submitting product reviews, connecting with Murad on social media channels, and special promotional offers will get you points too. You can exchange your points for full-size premium kits and best-selling products or redeem them for an e-gift card.

All Murad products come with a 60-day money back guarantee. Just contact their Customer Care department to request a Return Authorization Number for a refund of your purchase price.

People report that using various Murad acne-fighting products has greatly improved their skin in a short time - some seeing results in a month or less. The only component missing from their skincare line is the supplement aspect that is frequently offered by Murad's competitors.

Although you might be initially overwhelmed by the variety of choices you have for fighting acne with this retailer, their acne products are affordable and effective. Murad is a solid choice among acne products.

Silk'n Blue

Cost:

$199

Silk'n Blue takes a very different approach to fighting acne than the usual cleansers, creams, toners and supplements you'll find on the market. Instead, you'll get a device that uses fractional blue light and thermal heating to target the bacteria that causes acne while drying out oil-producing glands. Silk'n Blue is FDA-approved and uses a built-in safeguard to make sure that your skin's surface will never be higher than 106F.

Silk'n Blue has a higher start-up cost than most of the acne products in our review, at a retail price of $199. But, given the product's 2-year warranty (when purchased directly from Silk'n), that equals a monthly cost of less than $10 - an even better deal if your device lasts beyond the initial 24 months of use.

The biggest positive to using Silk'n Blue is the lack of chemicals or ingredients. For people with extremely sensitive skin, allergies or other issues, acne products that involve supplements or topical application of creams and cleansers are often more harmful than helpful. In those cases, Silk'n Blue may be the only appropriate way to tackle an acne problem.

But, as you might expect, a device that only uses blue light and gentle heat to combat acne doesn't deliver results for all people. Looking at Silk'n Blue's customer comments, we found some who said that they completely recommend it, and an equal number who said that it didn't work for them at all.

Here's the catch: Silk'n says that it can take three to seven weeks to see "the smooth, acne-free skin you've been dreaming of". But, their money-back guarantee only lasts for 30 days. Keep an eye on the calendar as you decide if Silk'n is having the desired effect on your skin, especially if you think you may need to request a refund.

Another downside is that it can easily take 15-20 minutes, several times a week, to follow the regimen - because you have to apply the device to each affected area for a few minutes. There's no quick cleanse-tone-moisturize and run out the door when using this acne product.

At the end of the day, Silk'n has been shown to help some acne sufferers to get relief that they haven't found with any other method, which is why it earns a decent 3-star rating despite a less-than stellar return policy and not proving effective for many users.

Continued from above

In the past, people with severe acne relied on prescription-based solutions. However, as these products became more widely-used, significant side effects emerged: extreme sensitivity to sun, depression, and thinning hair, to name a few. For that reason, over-the-counter acne products have increased in popularity, giving people relief with more natural products that also have fewer side effects - and that are often much more affordable than prescription-only remedies.

When looking at the dozens of acne products available today, how can you know which one will be right for you? Which ones deliver on their promises of clean, healthy skin, and which ones are just slick marketing gimmicks that won't leave you looking or feeling your best?

As you consider any acne regimen, keep in mind these criteria to determine which one will be the right fit:

  • Effectiveness. How well does the acne product work? How soon can you expect to see visible results? Does it treat the outbreaks as well as the causes? What do other users say about their experience using the treatment?
  • Price. How much will you spend to treat your acne? Be sure to see how long you can expect the product to last (e.g. a few weeks, a month). Is it a good value for what you pay? Also, do you have to sign up for a membership and/or an automatic shipment plan to get the lowest price?
  • Convenience. How is the acne product applied? Will it be easy to remember and use all of the steps, where applicable?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best Acne Products available today. We hope this information helps you reduce your acne problems and get healthy, clear skin right away!
