What is the best Acne product? Acne can affect anyone, regardless of age, ethnic background, or gender. This embarrassing, uncomfortable problem can not only be physically painful but can also impact a person's self-esteem, especially during childhood and adolescence.

Several factors contribute to the development of acne, including clogged pores from makeup and sunscreen, overproduction of oil, and even reactions to chemicals and other allergens. While it may be difficult to determine the exact cause of acne, there are many products on the market that can help reduce visible breakouts, as well as fighting some of the possible causes of acne from the inside out.

Paula's Choice

Cost:

$46 for the Clear Regular Strength Kit

$48 for the Clear Extra Strength Kit

Free shipping on all orders

Paula's Choice is the best skincare company you may have never heard of. Who also says that they are "committed to the truth even if that makes [them] unpopular" and that they have "an unwavering love and respect for women"? Everything they sell is manufactured in the US, never tested on animals, and is irritant- and fragrance-free.

One of the best tools we've found online is Paula's Choice Routine Finder. Answer a few questions - male or female, age, and main issues you're trying to address - and you'll be given the choice of an Essential (3-step) recommended plan or an Advanced (5-step) routine. For example, when we entered our information, our suggested Essential plan included the A.M.&P.M. RESIST Perfectly Balanced Foaming Cleanser, the CLEAR Regular Strength Anti-Redness Exfoliating Solution with 2% Salicylic Acid, plus an A.M./P.M. moisturizing plan (one with SPF 50 and another for anti-aging at night).

You can also contact their Client Services department for a complimentary, personalized consultation, especially if you feel a little mind-boggled by the sheer number of products available on the site.

But, if you already know that you just want to focus on acne-fighting products, you can go straight to the Skin Concerns tab at the top of the page and select Acne. You'll find a good selection of individual products ranging from an Acne Body Spray to a Pore-Normalizing Cleanser. Or, bundle your products by purchasing a kit, either in Regular or Extra-Strength. In those kits, you'll receive a cleanser, exfoliating solution, and a daily use product. The only difference is the strength of the ingredients: in the Regular kit, you'll have 2% Salicylic Acid in the exfoliating solution and 2.5% benzoyl peroxide in the skin-clearing product, while the Extra-Strength option doubles that last ingredient to 5%.

In the Help Center, you can find a very informative chart that will tell you how long you can expect each product to last, when used as directed. Almost everything they sell lasts at least two months, if not longer. That makes their products even more affordable, when compared with acne products that only come in 30-day quantities.

For signing up for the Paula's Choice newsletter, you can also get a 15% discount - and a surprise on your birthday. And, if you sign up for the Auto Replenishment program, that also comes with a 15% savings. Orders can be changed up to 24 hours in advance of each scheduled shipment date, and there's no minimum number of shipments required under the program.

All purchases are backed by a great return policy. If you're not completely satisfied for any reason, you can return your products within 60 days of your purchase date for a full refund. From 60-180 days after your purchase date, you can still return your products, but you'll get a store credit. It's worth noting that Paula's Choice does not accept empty bottles; in other words, you can't use it up completely and then decide to send it back. Keep that in mind, because some of their competitors do let you return totally empty bottles.

Both on the Paula's Choice site and on third-party platforms, we found hundreds of glowing reviews about the results when using their products. People who had tried every acne product known to man raved about finally getting relief from acne by using a Paula's Choice regimen.

You might need a little help getting started, but Paula's Choice is ready to get you the perfect plan for your perfect skin. We highly recommend them as a top pick for acne products.

Cost:

$49.95 to $94.95

Since 2002, Seattle-based Exposed Skin Care focuses on combining science and nature to bring you clear skin within 30 days. Their acne products combine active ingredients with natural botanicals and extracts, to fight breakouts while soothing and regenerating the skin.

Although you'll want to look at each product's ingredient list if you have sensitive skin or known allergies, you can expect your Exposed Skin Care solution to include benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid (BHA) to kill acne bacteria and unclog/shrink pores; glycolic acid (AHA) to clear and regenerate skin; sulfur to absorb excess oil; azelaic acid to prevent bacteria and redness. On the natural side, you'll see sage extract to prevent dryness and irritation; aloe vera for healing and hydration; tea tree oil to disinfect and heal blemishes; licorice root extract to brighten scars and even skin tone; passion flower extract for calming redness and irritation; and green tea for healing and protection through antioxidants.

You'll find three main kits when shopping the Exposed Skin Care line. Each kit is designed to last up to two months, with full-size products:

  • Basic: facial cleanser, clearing tonic, acne fighting serum, clear pore serum, and a Derm-X microdermabrasion cloth. This sells for $49.95 with free membership, $49.95 without.
  • Expanded: all of the components of the Basic, plus a moisture complex. You'll pay $59.95 with membership, $69.95 without.
  • Ultimate: everything in the Basic and Expanded, plus three additional products (microderm scrub, clarifying charcoal mask, probiotic complex/supplement). This kit costs $94.95 with membership, $104.95 without.

There's even a kit for body acne that sells for $34.95 with membership and $39.95 without; you'll find that on the Products page. There, you can also buy individual items, like body wash, body-size Derm-X cloths, and each of the components of the kits described above. That can be helpful if you find yourself using more of one product, like toner, and need to replenish your supply before you run out of the other acne products in your kit.

Exposed Skin Care has an extraordinary 1-year satisfaction guarantee on your first kit. Although fewer than 5% of their customers need to take advantage of this promise, the company wants to make sure you feel completely comfortable with making your purchase, knowing that you can get your money back if you don't see the results you're looking for.

And, their reputation for successful acne products is well-supported: at the time of our review, Exposed Skin Care had an "A+" rating and accreditation with the Better Business Bureau, and almost 95% of their reviews on third-party sites were 4- and 5-stars. Customers often remark that they've tried many of the other well-known brands for fighting acne - including some of those in our review - and this is the first time they've actually seen their acne problems improve.

We only found two drawbacks to the Exposed Skin Care approach to deal with acne. First, their products include benzoyl peroxide. That's a proven ingredient for drying oily skin and fighting pimples, but some people find that it makes their skin produce even more oil as it tries to combat the component's drying effects. Benzoyl peroxide can also have a bleaching effect on clothing, washcloths, and so on, so be careful when applying any of the products that contain it.

Second, in order to get the lowest prices, you'll need to sign up as a member and put your plan on auto ship. This saves you $10 on every kit and 30% on all individual products. There's no cost for this membership, and you can change the default 60-day redelivery schedule to any timeframe you prefer - but if you forget to make the change, you'll get another shipment you might not have wanted. Fortunately, you can return any unopened products within 30 days (not the same 1-year return policy you get on your first kit).

Exposed Skin Care is an affordable, effective way to fight even the most severe cases of acne: just take a look at the before-and-after photos on their site to see for yourself! We're confident that their products can help you to see clearer skin quickly.

Continued from above

In the past, people with severe acne relied on prescription-based solutions. However, as these products became more widely-used, significant side effects emerged: extreme sensitivity to sun, depression, and thinning hair, to name a few. For that reason, over-the-counter acne products have increased in popularity, giving people relief with more natural products that also have fewer side effects - and that are often much more affordable than prescription-only remedies.

When looking at the dozens of acne products available today, how can you know which one will be right for you? Which ones deliver on their promises of clean, healthy skin, and which ones are just slick marketing gimmicks that won't leave you looking or feeling your best?

As you consider any acne regimen, keep in mind these criteria to determine which one will be the right fit:

  • Effectiveness. How well does the acne product work? How soon can you expect to see visible results? Does it handle the outbreaks as well as the causes? What do other users say about their experience using the product?
  • Price. How much will you spend on your acne? Be sure to see how long you can expect the product to last (e.g. a few weeks, a month). Is it a good value for what you pay? Also, do you have to sign up for a membership and/or an automatic shipment plan to get the lowest price?
  • Convenience. How is the acne product applied? Will it be easy to remember and use all of the steps, where applicable?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best Acne Products available today. We hope this information helps you reduce your acne problems and get healthy, clear skin right away!
