What is the best Acne product? Acne can affect anyone, regardless of age, ethnic background, or gender. This embarrassing, uncomfortable problem can not only be physically painful but can also impact a person's self-esteem, especially during childhood and adolescence.

Several factors contribute to the development of acne, including clogged pores from makeup and sunscreen, overproduction of oil, and even reactions to chemicals and other allergens. While it may be difficult to determine the exact cause of acne, there are many products on the market that can help reduce visible breakouts, as well as fighting some of the possible causes of acne from the inside out.

With a history spanning more than two decades and a customer base of more than 20 million around the world, Proactiv may be the most recognized name among acne products. Constantly adding new products to their lineup as science leads to discoveries - like Adapalene, the first over-the-counter acne fighting ingredient to be introduced to the market in over 30 years - Proactiv is committed to helping people of all ages to have clear, healthy skin.

To get started, you'll have to choose between one of their three systems:

  • Proactiv Original: Renewing Cleanser, Revitalizing Toner, and Repairing Solution, usually considered to be the ideal combination for teen acne, using benzoyl peroxide as the primary active ingredient.
  • Proactiv+: called "the medicated difference", this includes a skin-smoothing exfoliator, pore targeting product, and a Complexion Perfection Hydrator. This system combines benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid as the main active ingredients.
  • ProactivMD: the only system free from benzoyl peroxide, this regimen uses a deep cleansing face wash, daily oil control moisturizer (SPF 30), and adapalene gel to deliver cleansing, hydration, and sun protection in one package.

One big difference between Proactiv and other plans is the size of the bottles and tubes used for their products. While they don't come right out and say so, Proactiv's cleansers, moisturizers, and other items tend to be much smaller than others: compare a 180ml bottle of a competitor's cleanser with the Proactiv 60ml size, and you'll see that you'll need to order much more often to get the same amount.

You also won't find any nutritional supplements: Proactiv is 100% topical, with no pills to remember. That's not necessarily a bad thing, if the topical products work for you, but some customers prefer to approach their acne problems in multiple ways - from the inside out and vice-versa.

Proactiv is backed by a 60-day money-back guarantee, minus any shipping and handling fees. That's better than some, but shorter than others. But, nearly two months should be enough time to see if the system works for you, or if it causes excessive dryness - unlike some supplement-based acne-fighting systems that don't promise results for many months.

To get Proactiv's most competitive pricing, you'll need to become a member of their subscription program. After your first shipment, you'll get a new 90-day supply every 12 weeks - and you can also opt to pay for that delivery in a single payment or over three installments. You can add extra products, speed up or slow down your delivery schedule, and get monthly promotions.

While Proactiv has much more competition than when they first started, this company still holds its own when it comes to effective acne solutions. The before-and-after photos on their site, as well as those on user blogs and other places around the web, are proof enough that this product still helps many people get rid of unsightly blemishes.

Acnezine

Acnezine uses a nutritional supplement and a topical moisturizing cream to work on both the causes and the symptoms of acne. The system has been on the market for almost a decade, and some people have found relief from painful outbreaks, especially when using the capsules.

The active ingredients of the Acnezine supplement are:

  • Vitamin E Acetate
  • Vitamin C Ester
  • Hydrolyzed Collagen
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid
  • Hyaluronic Acid
  • CoQ10
  • Aloe Vera
  • Bioperine Extract

While the second component of the system is called a "moisturizing creme", it consists of 5% benzoyl peroxide. Several customers said that their skin got too dry while using it, and so they kept using just the capsules. Others said that the creme was very similar to less expensive brand-name products on the market.

Despite being around for years, we weren't impressed by Acnezine's unsecured website. We found errors that gave us pause, from telling us to drink a "lit of water" after every capsule, to misspelling the main ingredient in the moisturizing creme (such as benzoyl peroxide). The FAQ very vaguely explains that once you get the product in the mail, you'll be able to see the recommended dosage. Especially on a product that has reviews dating back almost a decade, this left us wondering if the acne product was indeed high-quality.

The instructions on the Acnezine site were also contradictory: should we take one capsule per day, one per meal, before we eat or after? That's not a great approach to taking any kind of dietary supplement.

Acnezine's return policy isn't fantastic. Although you'll see a 100% guarantee prominently featured on the site, digging into the Terms and Conditions reveals that you cannot return items that have been opened or used, and there's a $10 restocking fee for each item you send back. And, the FAQ says that if you have any medical questions about their product, you should contact your doctor: they won't give you any information about possible reasons you should or shouldn't use their acne system.

Compared with other acne solution providers, this company falls far short in many ways. We strongly recommend that you consider other acne products that have a more solid reputation.

Continued from above

In the past, people with severe acne relied on prescription-based solutions. However, as these products became more widely-used, significant side effects emerged: extreme sensitivity to sun, depression, and thinning hair, to name a few. For that reason, over-the-counter acne products have increased in popularity, giving people relief with more natural products that also have fewer side effects - and that are often much more affordable than prescription-only remedies.

When looking at the dozens of acne products available today, how can you know which one will be right for you? Which ones deliver on their promises of clean, healthy skin, and which ones are just slick marketing gimmicks that won't leave you looking or feeling your best?

As you consider any acne regimen, keep in mind these criteria to determine which one will be the right fit:

  • Effectiveness. How well does the acne product work? How soon can you expect to see visible results? Does it treat the outbreaks as well as the causes? What do other users say about their experience using the treatment?
  • Price. How much will you spend to treat your acne? Be sure to see how long you can expect the product to last (e.g. a few weeks, a month). Is it a good value for what you pay? Also, do you have to sign up for a membership and/or an automatic shipment plan to get the lowest price?
  • Convenience. How is the acne product applied? Will it be easy to remember and use all of the steps, where applicable?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best Acne Products available today. We hope this information helps you reduce your acne problems and get healthy, clear skin right away!
