What is the best Acne product? Acne can affect anyone, regardless of age, ethnic background, or gender. This embarrassing, uncomfortable problem can not only be physically painful but can also impact a person's self-esteem, especially during childhood and adolescence.

Several factors contribute to the development of acne, including clogged pores from makeup and sunscreen, overproduction of oil, and even reactions to chemicals and other allergens. While it may be difficult to determine the exact cause of acne, there are many products on the market that can help reduce visible breakouts, as well as fighting some of the possible causes of acne from the inside out.

True Botanicals has a mission: to create a healthier beauty industry through nontoxic-yet-effective skincare products. They even go so far as to conduct independent clinical studies to compare the efficacy of their products vs. three of its top competitors'.

Not sure what you need? Click on the "Take Quiz" link at the top of the site. After answering a few questions, you'll get access to a customized routine with personal product recommendations. Want even more help? The True Botanicals team of experts are ready to help - at no charge.

If you're looking to fight acne, your results will probably lead you to the Clear Collection. Featured prominently on the main Clear product page are a couple of graphs demonstrating the results when compared to Proactiv+ in one of those previously mentioned clinical studies. Not surprisingly, over an 8-week period, Clear outperformed Proactiv+ both with improvement in acne lesions and skin moisturization.

True Botanicals says that you should understand that there are three big myths when dealing with acne: "Dry It Out", "Avoid Oils", and "Exfoliate More". That's why their Clear line has some significant differences from other acne regimens. You won't find harsh chemicals or oil-free ingredient lists. Here's what you will find, particularly in their three main kits:

  • Clear Duo, $142: Hydrating Cleanser (key ingredients: green/white tea, black willow bark extract, helichrysum) and Pure Radiance Oil (key ingredients: helichrysum, hemp/pumpkin/grape seed oils, algae extract, astaxanthin). These two products are designed to restore balance and eliminate skin congestion.
  • Clear Trio, $185. This adds a Nutrient Toner (key ingredients: olive leaf extract, black willow bark extract, sandalwood hydrosol) to the mix, to help banish blemishes without a drying effect.
  • Clear Set, $311. The fourth component added is the Cellular Repair Serum (key ingredients: hyaluronic acid, olive leaf extract, and black willow bark extract). It's designed to penetrate the skin with natural antibacterials and skin-strengthening acid to restore overall skin health.

You'll find options to "enhance your routine" under each kit, such as Vitamin C Booster and a Moisture Mask.

True Botanicals' satisfaction guarantee isn't as generous as some of the companies we reviewed: just 30 days from your date of purchase. With product lines that can take up to two months to show results, we'd like to see the company extend that timeframe to be more competitive with other providers of acne products on the market.

Of course, the most important question is "Does it work?" True Botanicals doesn't have as many customer reviews as some acne products, and you'll only find a small number of them on their individual product pages. We did find a decent number of reviews (not just people who were given a sample to try for free and then write about it) that said they experienced lasting improvement with their acne problems when using the True Botanicals Clear products.

So, if you've tried other acne-busting supplements but haven't seen success - and if it's worth the big difference in cost to get relief - you may want to see if True Botanicals' 100% nontoxic approach can help clear up your acne. Just be mindful of that 30-day mark, in the event that you need to make a return.

Acnezine

Cost:

$79.90 for a 3-month supply (free shipping)

$119.85 for a 5-month supply (free shipping)

Acnezine uses a nutritional supplement and a topical moisturizing cream to work on both the causes and the symptoms of acne. The system has been on the market for almost a decade, and some people have found relief from painful outbreaks, especially when using the capsules.

The active ingredients of the Acnezine supplement are:

  • Vitamin E Acetate
  • Vitamin C Ester
  • Hydrolyzed Collagen
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid
  • Hyaluronic Acid
  • CoQ10
  • Aloe Vera
  • Bioperine Extract

While the second component of the system is called a "moisturizing creme", it consists of 5% benzoyl peroxide. Several customers said that their skin got too dry while using it, and so they kept using just the capsules. Others said that the creme was very similar to less expensive brand-name products on the market.

Despite being around for years, we weren't impressed by Acnezine's unsecured website. We found errors that gave us pause, from telling us to drink a "lit of water" after every capsule, to misspelling the main ingredient in the moisturizing creme (such as benzoyl peroxide). The FAQ very vaguely explains that once you get the product in the mail, you'll be able to see the recommended dosage. Especially on a product that has reviews dating back almost a decade, this left us wondering if the acne product was indeed high-quality.

The instructions on the Acnezine site were also contradictory: should we take one capsule per day, one per meal, before we eat or after? That's not a great approach to taking any kind of dietary supplement.

Acnezine's return policy isn't fantastic. Although you'll see a 100% guarantee prominently featured on the site, digging into the Terms and Conditions reveals that you cannot return items that have been opened or used, and there's a $10 restocking fee for each item you send back. And, the FAQ says that if you have any medical questions about their product, you should contact your doctor: they won't give you any information about possible reasons you should or shouldn't use their acne system.

Compared with other acne solution providers, this company falls far short in many ways. We strongly recommend that you consider other acne products that have a more solid reputation.

Continued from above

In the past, people with severe acne relied on prescription-based solutions. However, as these products became more widely-used, significant side effects emerged: extreme sensitivity to sun, depression, and thinning hair, to name a few. For that reason, over-the-counter acne products have increased in popularity, giving people relief with more natural products that also have fewer side effects - and that are often much more affordable than prescription-only remedies.

When looking at the dozens of acne products available today, how can you know which one will be right for you? Which ones deliver on their promises of clean, healthy skin, and which ones are just slick marketing gimmicks that won't leave you looking or feeling your best?

As you consider any acne regimen, keep in mind these criteria to determine which one will be the right fit:

  • Effectiveness. How well does the acne product work? How soon can you expect to see visible results? Does it treat the outbreaks as well as the causes? What do other users say about their experience using the treatment?
  • Price. How much will you spend to treat your acne? Be sure to see how long you can expect the product to last (e.g. a few weeks, a month). Is it a good value for what you pay? Also, do you have to sign up for a membership and/or an automatic shipment plan to get the lowest price?
  • Convenience. How is the acne product applied? Will it be easy to remember and use all of the steps, where applicable?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best Acne Products available today. We hope this information helps you reduce your acne problems and get healthy, clear skin right away!
