What are the best ADHD supplements? Whether you or someone you love suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), or any other difficulties with maintaining concentration and focus, the struggle is real. In the United States alone, more than 6 million children ages 4-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD.

Add to that the number of people - kids and adults - who have the condition but have never been diagnosed, and you'll quickly see why people are looking for solutions. Since the symptoms of ADHD fall into three main categories: behavioral, cognitive, and mood, ADHD can impact every aspect of a person's life.

Cost:

$259.80 (six month supply - $43.30/month) - free shipping

TopConsumerReviews.com Best-In-Class Blue Ribbon Award If you're looking for a proven way to reduce ADHD symptoms, Listol should be at the top of your list. This over-the-counter product is non-toxic and combines an effective array of amino acids, vitamins and minerals, and neurotransmitter precursors to help decrease excitability, promote restful sleep, increase focus, and much more.

Listol is available as both a chewable tablet or an easy-to-swallow capsule. Whichever form you choose, your daily dose of 3 or 6 capsules/tablets (three in the AM, three in the PM for adults; three capsules/tablets after a meal once a day for children ages 6-12) includes these active ingredients:

  • Vitamin B6
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • Copper
  • Phosphatidylserine
  • Di-Methyl Glycine
  • Glycine
  • GABA powder
  • DMAE Bitartrate
  • Huperzine A extract

One thing we really appreciate about Listol is that its ingredients are well-documented as being effective for ADHD. Many companies shy away from questions, but not the makers of Listol, Progressive Health. We enjoyed reading through the comments - and even the skeptical remarks - and seeing that the company responded in a way that was both friendly and factual, with links to National Institutes of Health publications showing the effects of magnesium, iron, zinc and B6.

Listol also comes with a reassuring 6-month satisfaction guarantee. If you try this product and don't get the relief from ADHD symptoms that you were hoping for, Progressive Health will refund your purchase price with no hassle once they receive the bottles (empty, full, or partially full). This focus on customer satisfaction is just part of the reason that Progressive Health continues to have an "A+" rating with the Better Business Bureau, over more than two decades in operation.

You should expect Listol to improve ADHD symptoms within 30-60 days of consistent use. Of course, every person's body is different; some customers report seeing significant improvement even after a few days.

Although Listol isn't the cheapest ADHD product on the market -$64.95 for a one-month supply, but with discounts for buying multiple bottles in the same order (e.g. $48.72/month for a 4-month supply) - it offers a terrific overall value with a proven history of helping both children and adults to manage their ADHD and live life more fully. For all of these reasons, Listol continues to be our highest-ranked choice among over-the-counter products for ADHD.

FOCUSENE

Cost:

$39.95 + $5.95 shipping (one month supply)

Focusene is an ADHD supplement primarily intended for adults 18 and older. Manufactured in the USA, the product comes in capsule form and may be taken as a daily dose of two capsules in the morning or by taking one in the morning and another in the afternoon. It is recommended that you take Focusene at least a half-hour before eating, to improve its effectiveness. According to the makers of this ADHD product, you may feel positive effects within an hour of taking it; for long-term balance and improvement, you may need to wait 3-4 months to see a noticeable difference.

The key components of Focusene are:

  • Dandelion extract: improves memory, wakefulness, and general cognitive abilities
  • Forskolin: boosts the signals within the brain
  • Phenylalanine: an amino acid that helps regulate concentration, memory and focus
  • L-Theanine: an amino acid that reduces physical tension and stimulates concentration and attention
  • Acetyl-L-Carnitine: provides a natural boost for mental and physical energy, promotes increased focus, improves memory
  • Brahmi (Bacopa): promotes healthy cognitive function
  • Deanol: helps build choline, which leads to better brain and nervous system function
  • Grape seed extract: helps regulate dopamine and norepinephrine
  • Vitamin B6: balances the metabolism and decreases fatigue and restlessness
  • Ginkgo biloba: helps fight cognitive decline
  • Korean red ginseng: decreases anxiety and promotes circulation

Focusene's return policy is confusing. On the guarantee page, it says that you can return the product within 60 days of delivery, as long as you've only got one opened bottle to return. But, in the fine print on the Terms and Conditions page, it says that you can return a single one-month supply bottle, but it must be unopened to qualify. In other words, if you try the product for a month and don't feel like it helped - or worse, you have a bad reaction - you're out of luck. If you got a second month's supply, though, you can return it if you didn't open the bottle.

We were disappointed that their online chat was offline during regular business hours, so we couldn't get the makers of Focusene to clarify their return policy.

Another annoying part of the customer experience is that Focusene is only available as a recurring monthly shipment. For people who forget (or don't realize) that buying this ADHD supplement means that they're signing up for automatic deliveries every 30 days, they could get a nasty, expensive surprise - one that might not be refundable.

Focusene isn't very transparent with their reviews, either. At the time of our most recent visit, the site proudly displayed an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars over 45 customer reviews. But, there were only 9 reviews actually displayed - and, unsurprisingly, they were all 4- and 5-star reviews. The makers of Focusene could learn from their competitors who show all of their customers' comments, not just the positive ones. Because the reviews were skewed to only include positive ones, it's hard to tell if Focusene does the job when it comes to decreasing ADHD symptoms.

For all of these reasons, we recommend that you consider one of the higher-ranked ADHD options in our review.

Continued from above

With respect to behavior, ADHD can show up as aggression, irritability, impulsivity, lack of restraint, fidgeting, and even repeating certain actions or words. Cognitively, ADHD can look like a lack of attention, problems focusing, forgetfulness and absent-mindedness. And, when it comes to mood, you may see boredom, excitability, anger, anxiety, and even mood swings.

Although ADHD is most commonly diagnosed in young boys, it can affect both males and females across all races and economic levels. It's not hard to imagine that, if not dealt with successfully, the problems associated with ADHD in children - poor performance in school, social issues, challenges with self-esteem, and so on - can easily translate into challenges for adults trying to do well in college or hold down a job.

However, the approach to handling ADHD has been controversial at best. You won't have to search very long to find debates raging among parents, educators, and even across the media, questioning the increasing frequency of the diagnosis and the medications typically prescribed. Most of the prescription medications used for the condition are actually powerful stimulants, and they can come with side effects like insomnia, personality changes, stomach aches, tics and tremors, and much more.

For that reason, many people turn to over-the-counter, naturally-formulated supplements designed to handle the symptoms of ADHD without the negative - and possibly long-lasting - side effects. The majority of these products combine ingredients that are well-documented for improving blood flow to the brain, decreasing agitation, and increasing focus and concentration.

As you consider the wide range of over-the-counter options for ADHD, you may feel overwhelmed trying to narrow down the possibilities. Here are several criteria to keep in mind that will help you make your decision:

  • Recommended Age. Is the ADHD supplement designed for adults, children, or both?
  • Ingredients. What's in the product? Does the company do a good job of documenting those ingredients and how they work to improve ADHD?
  • Cost. What will you need to spend for a full month's supply? Is the price reasonable?
  • Satisfaction Guarantee. If you try the ADHD product and it doesn't work like you hoped, can you return it for a refund? How long does the company allow you to try it before initiating a return?
