Where is the best place to buy auto parts? Regardless of how old or new your vehicle is, we all experience the frustrations of having to maintain and make repairs. This might mean changing the oil, replacing the brakes, or even something much more complicated like a transmission.

That said, a lot of vehicle owners choose to make their own repairs to save hundreds and even thousands of dollars over the life of owning their car. Like any mechanic, you'll need the right parts to get the job done. But gone are the days of having to go to your local auto parts store hoping they'll have the right parts in stock.

JC Whitney has been in business longer than any other auto part retailer we have come across. Some customers will remember them for their legendary catalogs they used to print and distribute through homes across the U.S. They used to be a more widely recognized brand until it was sold by the original owner's family in 2002 and the company started going downhill. In 2010, it was purchased by U.S. Auto Parts, and has not lived up to the hype and reputation it did in its earlier years.

Huge inventory of auto parts

JC Whitney has a warehouse of over 1.2 million products that is enough to supply parts for over 25 million vehicles. Over 100,000 accessories are available for purchase through JC Whitney, making them not only one of the oldest, but one of the most inventory-heavy companies we have found.

Affordable pricing

You'll likely find that the prices at JC Whitney are quite affordable. Even so, they have a price match policy in case a customer finds one of their products for a lower price with a competitor. All it takes is a correspondence with customer service about the competing product and JC Whitney will lower their price to match it. JC Whitney boasts that many of their items are already marked over 50% lower than what you'll find at any other store.

Varying return policies

Certain products listed on the JC Whitney site carry a 90-day return policy. For most products, customers have 30 days to make returns and receive a full refund. Any used products or non-returnable products, as specified on the JC Whitney website refund page, are not eligible for refunds regardless of their condition. For questions on return policies or any other topic, customers can either chat with customer service over the phone, fill out a contact form, or do a live chat online.

Customer feedback concerns

The Better Business Bureau gives JC Whitney an A+ rating for their services. This was somewhat surprising considering a slew of negative feedback on purchases over the last few years reported by customers. Most reports are of slow shipping times, part mix-ups, and poor attitudes received from customer service reps. We want to give JC Whitney a higher rating based on their wide selection of inventory, years in business, and inexpensive pricing, but the customer feedback has us concerned. They have earned an average ranking among other online auto part retailers.

Parts Geek was founded in 2008 and offers both OEM and after-market auto parts. If the online browsing experience is important to you, shopping at Parts Geek might be painful. Their website looks as if it has not been updated since the 90's with text-heavy pages, lack of helpful search categories, and a distracting layout. Their website needs a major overhaul to compete with other auto parts retailers that make it easy to find the auto parts customers are looking for.

Disappointing inventory, questionable pricing

We noticed while browsing their inventory that they don't seem to have a wide selection of items for vehicles made within the last few years. Their inventory definitely doesn't seem to be as complete as some of their competing auto part suppliers.

Parts Geek boasts that they "scour the web" to make sure they always have low prices. This may be true, but if they were really dedicated to low prices, they would have a low price guarantee like their competitors do. If they have the parts someone is looking for, they can get them price matched at one of our higher-rated sites and buy from a company that presents themselves more professionally.

Frustrating return process

The Better Business Bureau gives Parts Geek an A- rating. Many customers report fast shipping and satisfaction with the order they receive. However, the negative feedback given by customers usually revolves around issues with returns and the complicated process it turns out to be. This includes not having return shipping paid for when Parts Geek sends the wrong part, stubborn customer service representatives, and difficulties getting accepted for a refund.

The return policy at Parts Geek requires an RMA number for all items being sent back. Customers have 30 days to request an RMA number through the website and get their products shipped back. This is a pretty standard procedure, but the part that really gets us is the return shipping. Regardless of the party at fault for the return, the customer is responsible for paying shipping costs. This means if Parts Geek sends you a part entirely different from what you ordered, you will be the one footing the bill to send it back to them. In addition, if you receive an order with missing pieces, Parts Geek says you'll need to either return your entire order or purchase the missing pieces elsewhere. Are you kidding?

Buy at your own risk

Parts Geek may offer the parts you need at an affordable price, but this is also the case with our higher-rated auto part suppliers. We suggest using one of them for a better online shopping experience and return policy should you need to use it. Parts Geek has earned our lowest rating among auto part suppliers.
