Indiana drivers who have a factory warranty on their vehicle may want to consider purchasing another auto warranty when the current one expires. Factory warranties generally cover major operating parts such as the engine and transmission, and may even offer more complete coverage known as a bumper to bumper warranty, which insures all operating systems in the vehicle against necessary repairs. Auto warranties can be purchased that cover much the same things as a factory warranty.
Before making the decision to purchase an additional warranty, the buyer should research the company. Only businesses that have an A- rating or better with the BBB should be considered. The BBB requires accredited companies to be responsive to claims and address them quickly and in good faith. Accredited companies are also required to honor the terms of agreement in the auto policy. Businesses that keep the terms of agreement with the policyholder are likely to receive good consumer reviews. Checking to make sure the auto warranty company is a legitimate business is important before proceeding to the next step.
After checking the company's reputation, the buyer should research the provisions of the auto warranty. Some warranties cover major repairs such as the engine, while others only have provisions for the electrical components of the vehicle. Some warranties cover the transmission, drive-line, air-conditioning, or any combination of parts and systems. The buyer should read the entire warranty, including the fine print, to verify the desired coverage is included. A buyer should understand the auto warranty well enough to be able to explain the terms to a spouse or another adult family member.
In addition to understanding what is covered, the buyer needs to be aware of the payment terms of the business. If the business will issue a check to the policyholder after receipt of repairs has been obtained, this may result in a longer period of time before the policyholder obtains reimbursement. Understanding the method of reimbursement is important before purchasing any auto warranty in Indiana.
