Baby Earth vs A Baby

At the top of every new parent's wish list is a baby stroller. From the most basic umbrella-type model that allows for easy traveling, to jogging styles that can help Mom and Dad to get (back) into shape, having the right baby stroller can be a life-saver.

Gone are the days of the bulky carriage - though you can still find those if you like the classic look. Today's baby strollers can be as sleek and functional as you could possibly want, with travel systems that allow you to snap your baby's car seat right into the frame, accessories like cup holders (for baby and for Mom!) sun shades, and even organizers to keep your diapers, wipes, and snacks all in the right place.

Originally formed under the name Baby-Wise, BabyEarth's business grew out of two parents' frustration with not being able to find the newest, most innovative baby items in their local Austin, Texas stores. Owners Heather and James Bendle started their company in order to make cool, new products available to online shoppers.

Using the BabyEarth website is easy. From the main stroller page, you can sort through all of the 150+ strollers by price or by best sellers; or, use the options on the left-hand side of the page to narrow down the options by brand, stroller weight, and more. Alternately, if you have an idea of what you need, you can browse by stroller style (single, double, jogging, travel system, and so on).

The selection at BabyEarth is somewhat limited compared with better-known stroller stores. When we searched for a popular Graco travel system, we couldn't find it; the umbrella stroller we also used for comparison among stores was not available in as many colors and patterns as we found elsewhere.

On the other hand, BabyEarth's prices are very competitive on the strollers they do carry, including a rewards program that gives members 5% back in BE Rewards dollars on all eligible purchases. The site doesn't specifically mention which purchases may be excluded from earning rewards.

Shipping costs are slightly higher at BabyEarth than at some stores we reviewed. Orders over $99 ship for free, and orders with amounts less than $99 ship for $7.95. Also, if you happen to live in the Austin area, you can get free same-day delivery.

On the other hand, few online baby stores can match BabyEarth's return policy, with most purchases eligible for a refund if returned in new, unused condition within one year from purchase. This is exceptionally customer-friendly, especially when buying gifts using BE's registry or products that might not be needed for several months (until the baby is born, or is big enough for a forward-facing car seat).

Where BabyEarth really shines is in their commitment to customer service. As a merchant with an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and a Google Trusted Store, BE has an excellent track record. Their return policy allows customers to get a refund for any stroller returned in new, unused condition within 12 months of purchase. If you're buying a stroller that might not be needed for a little while - as a gift for a baby that hasn't been born yet, or a jogging stroller that might not be used until spring - this could be extremely helpful. We also found many customer reviews that compliment BabyEarth for handling any issues that came up in an efficient, accurate, and better yet, apologetic manner.

With competitive pricing and a stellar reputation for satisfying customers, BabyEarth earns high marks and is a highly recommended retailer for your next baby stroller purchase.

With a tagline proclaiming "Only the best for Baby!" it's no surprise that aBaby specializes in high-end, customized items for infants and children. While they primarily sell one-of-a-kind furniture for the nursery, aBaby does carry just over a dozen strollers.

Finding those strollers may be a challenge. Unlike most of the stores we reviewed, aBaby does not have a link anywhere in the navigation bar to take you directly to their available strollers. Instead, you'll need to search by keyword to see what they have to offer.

We were not overly impressed with aBaby's selection. Their available brands are extremely limited - no Graco travel system or Peg Perego umbrella stroller, like the ones we used to compare prices with other retailers. In fact, we couldn't find a single model that would allow for a parent to use it with a car seat, either as part of a travel system or with a snap-in feature. There was also only one stroller that could accommodate more than one child at a time: the six-passenger buggy often used by day care facilities. With such a limited selection, it was difficult to compare aBaby's prices with other stores.

On a more positive note, all but two of aBaby's strollers ship for free, saving you some money.

aBaby's return policy is fairly standard: customers can return strollers for a refund or exchange within 30 days of receipt. Shipping costs are non-refundable, and you'll have to pay the shipping costs on any returns. There is a 15% restocking fee on larger items, so you'll want to check the specific stroller you'd like to buy to see if it is big enough to have that fee.

Looking at customer satisfaction, aBaby's results vary widely. We're impressed with their A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau for the greater New York City area, and nearly 100 reviews on aBaby's site show five-star feedback from happy shoppers. However, reviews on other sites describe significant issues with customer service. Some shoppers waited months for their product to be delivered, and in some instances the order never shipped at all. Other customers said that it was a hassle to get a refund without being charged a restocking fee, even on smaller purchases.

While we appreciate aBaby's strong reputation with the BBB and free shipping on most strollers, their small selection and issues with delivery might leave many customers looking elsewhere.

On the other hand, finding that perfect stroller at your local store isn't always easy; most brick-and-mortar stores carry a limited range of styles and brands, making it necessary to drive from one end of town to the other to get the model you want. And, if you're a parent of a child with special needs - or of twins, triplets, and more! - it can be even more challenging to find the specialty stroller you're looking for.

Fortunately, online shopping has simplified the entire process, with numerous brands, styles, and prices just a mouse click away. Many retailers will sweeten your stroller deal by including free shipping or store rewards, especially on the more expensive models. If you're shopping for a friend or family member, most online stores have gift registries, ensuring that you get the exact model your recipient wants.

With so many stores competing for your attention, how can you know where to buy your stroller? As you look at what each online retailer has to offer, keep the following criteria in mind:

  • Prices. Compared with other stores selling strollers, are the prices competitive? Is there a price match guarantee if you find a lower price somewhere else? Will your stroller ship for free?
  • Selection. Does the store offer a wide variety of strollers to choose from?
  • Customer Service. Do other shoppers have positive things to say about the help received from the retailer's customer service representatives? Is it easy to contact the store with any questions or concerns?
  • Return Policy. Can you return the stroller if, for some reason, it doesn't meet your expectations? If so, will there be a restocking fee?
