Free 7-day trial of full service

Care4Hire has been matching parents with qualified caregivers since 1987. Their service also includes referrals for Tutoring, Housekeeping, Pet Care, and Miscellaneous Help.

One great feature of Care4Hire is the ability to preview their service in not one but two ways. First, you can enter your zip code and get a list of registered babysitters in your area — with no other personal information. That lets you know right away if there are any potential matches in your area, and you don't even have to create an account.

When we entered our zip code, we found a decent variety of babysitters in our area. The list was not sortable by location, though - so we had to go through many pages of results to find the ones specifically in our area and not just in our general metro region.

If you decide you want to try Care4Hire's service, you can set up an account and post a job during a free one-week trial. During those 7 days, you'll be contacted by potential caregivers, letting you see if it's worth paying for a full membership to always have enough babysitters to choose from. After the first week, you'll need to choose a membership plan: either $19.99 per month with a $10 registration fee, or $99.99 for a full year.

One area where Care4Hire comes up short compared with our highest-ranked babysitter referral service is with background checks. Caregivers can opt to pay for a background check, but it's not required; in fact, Care4Hire specifically states that they do absolutely no pre-screening on any of the babysitters who register with them, and they recommend that you screen them yourself. Of course, you could decide only to allow those babysitters who have paid for background checks to interview for the job, but that's an extra step some people would rather not have to deal with - especially with other babysitter referral services that automatically perform basic background screening on every registered caregiver.

We also were puzzled by Care4Hire not having a rating or accreditation with the Better Business Bureau. For a company that has been in business for more than three decades, that was surprising. And, other than a handful of testimonials and some outdated TV show mentions (Jon and Kate Gosselin, anyone?), we didn't find many current reviews from families using Care4Hire to find good babysitters.

Care4Hire is affordably priced, and we like being able to give their service a try before committing to one of their membership plans. But, in most respects, it's not the strongest option among babysitter referral services today.

At first glance, there's a lot to love about UrbanSitter. It's one of the most high-tech babysitter referral services available today, using the power of social media and networking to find caregivers that have already been used successfully by people you know. Want to find a babysitter that your Facebook friends have hired? One that's popular at your child's school? Someone that your LinkedIn connections already know? UrbanSitter makes that possible.

This service is especially popular with parents who are looking for a last-minute babysitter, or who are on vacation or out of town with their kids and need a caregiver for a few hours.

Before being available to hire on UrbanSitter, every babysitter has to pass a background review that includes the National Sex Offender Registry, Global Watchlist, SSN Trace, public state/county criminal records, and a review by a member of the UrbanSitter staff. Additional background checks are available for an extra fee (and have to be approved by the sitter).

If you'd like to see possible babysitters in your area, UrbanSitter lets you see shortened profiles near you. We had to go down to the bottom of the page and click on the link to see all cities, then on our state and metro area, since it wasn't one of the featured major cities in their list. Our results didn't include anyone in our suburb, but we found several profiles from babysitters in our general area.

Looking at babysitter profiles is a lot like looking through a friends list on your favorite social media platform. You can see a photo and even a video intro, ratings from previous clients and stats for how many repeat families the sitter has, whether or not they've had verified CPR training, and if they accept credit card payments through a verified US bank account. These are all great features for making sure that the babysitter you hire is one you're comfortable with.

Although UrbanSitter doesn't offer a free trial, this service is priced competitively. You can opt for a one-month access pass for $34.95, or subscribe to their service for $19.95/month or $99.95/year.

So, with all of these great features, why does UrbanSitter rank so low in our list? While we found some positive reviews from parents and sitters, the negative ones were much more common. Starting with an “F” from the Better Business Bureau for failing to respond to consumer complaints, we felt worried about the experience families might have if they had problems with their UrbanSitter caregiver. Across multiple places online, we found parents describing frequent last-minute cancellations (sitters aren't downranked for those), difficulties reaching UrbanSitter customer support when problems arose, and bad experiences even with babysitters with five-star/repeat family profiles.

And, for what it's worth, many complaints have been made by the babysitters using the UrbanSitter platform too. Issues with payments, unsafe families, and more problems with getting help from the company's support department make it sound like this isn't a great option for families or babysitters.

While we think there's a lot of potential for UrbanSitter, especially with their great ways of using social networking and advanced technology, there are a lot of reasons that parents (and sitters) may want to use one of the higher-rated babysitter referral services in our review.

However, babysitter services can vary greatly in what they have to offer. Before you jump online to find a babysitter for your children, you should consider the following:

  • Background checks. Are background checks already completed on the babysitters that are offered? What aspects are checked?
  • Fees. What does each babysitter company charge for their service, and what does that specifically include?
  • Selection. A service with thousands of babysitters will result in a higher chance of success finding a quality babysitter. How large is the database of candidates?
