Sitter City is a well organized website that serves to connect babysitters, pet sitters, dog walkers, senior care, house sitters and more to those looking for assistance. In business since 2001, Sitter City provides care seekers a convenient online tool for searching and finding the right help aged 18 and older.

The availability of providers at Sitter City is diverse and expansive. However, in our babysitter provider search we didn't locate as many candidates as the highest ranked company. The results that did appear were not in order of location - we saw that as a downside. However, we found the babysitter information very informative and easy to use. Available are pictures, hourly prices, experience, availability, distance, general information, education and more.

Sitter City provides a standard background check on some care givers. If the individual you're interested in does not have a background check available you can pay $9.95 to have this completed. Background checks cover verifying the social security number, address, and any criminal and sex offender information.

Sitter City is an A+ Better Business Bureau rated company and allows you to try their services free for one week. Overall, Sitter City is a strong, well priced, choice for your care giver needs. We would have liked to have seen a background check on all providers and a little bigger selection but overall really liked the Sitter City service.

At first glance, there's a lot to love about UrbanSitter. It's one of the most high-tech babysitter referral services available today, using the power of social media and networking to find caregivers that have already been used successfully by people you know. Want to find a babysitter that your Facebook friends have hired? One that's popular at your child's school? Someone that your LinkedIn connections already know? UrbanSitter makes that possible.

This service is especially popular with parents who are looking for a last-minute babysitter, or who are on vacation or out of town with their kids and need a caregiver for a few hours.

Before being available to hire on UrbanSitter, every babysitter has to pass a background review that includes the National Sex Offender Registry, Global Watchlist, SSN Trace, public state/county criminal records, and a review by a member of the UrbanSitter staff. Additional background checks are available for an extra fee (and have to be approved by the sitter).

If you'd like to see possible babysitters in your area, UrbanSitter lets you see shortened profiles near you. We had to go down to the bottom of the page and click on the link to see all cities, then on our state and metro area, since it wasn't one of the featured major cities in their list. Our results didn't include anyone in our suburb, but we found several profiles from babysitters in our general area.

Looking at babysitter profiles is a lot like looking through a friends list on your favorite social media platform. You can see a photo and even a video intro, ratings from previous clients and stats for how many repeat families the sitter has, whether or not they've had verified CPR training, and if they accept credit card payments through a verified US bank account. These are all great features for making sure that the babysitter you hire is one you're comfortable with.

Although UrbanSitter doesn't offer a free trial, this service is priced competitively. You can opt for a one-month access pass for $34.95, or subscribe to their service for $19.95/month or $99.95/year.

So, with all of these great features, why does UrbanSitter rank so low in our list? While we found some positive reviews from parents and sitters, the negative ones were much more common. Starting with an “F” from the Better Business Bureau for failing to respond to consumer complaints, we felt worried about the experience families might have if they had problems with their UrbanSitter caregiver. Across multiple places online, we found parents describing frequent last-minute cancellations (sitters aren't downranked for those), difficulties reaching UrbanSitter customer support when problems arose, and bad experiences even with babysitters with five-star/repeat family profiles.

And, for what it's worth, many complaints have been made by the babysitters using the UrbanSitter platform too. Issues with payments, unsafe families, and more problems with getting help from the company's support department make it sound like this isn't a great option for families or babysitters.

While we think there's a lot of potential for UrbanSitter, especially with their great ways of using social networking and advanced technology, there are a lot of reasons that parents (and sitters) may want to use one of the higher-rated babysitter referral services in our review.

However, babysitter services can vary greatly in what they have to offer. Before you jump online to find a babysitter for your children, you should consider the following:

  • Background checks. Are background checks already completed on the babysitters that are offered? What aspects are checked?
  • Fees. What does each babysitter company charge for their service, and what does that specifically include?
  • Selection. A service with thousands of babysitters will result in a higher chance of success finding a quality babysitter. How large is the database of candidates?

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best babysitter services available today. We hope these reviews help you find a babysitter you can feel confident with!
