What is the best way to learn to ballroom dance? Not only is ballroom dancing entertaining and beautiful to watch, but it is a great way to exercise and anyone can do it! However, learning to dance in front of people at a class can be intimidating and uncomfortable. Not all of us are born graceful! Thankfully, there are convenient learn-from-home ballroom dance lesson options available to anyone that wants to tear up the dance floor.

Self-paced dance lessons are a great way to master your technique and skill, rather than trying to keep up with everyone else. With the convenience of video and instructional technology, you can pause, practice, and re-watch any part of your dance lesson until you feel comfortable moving forward. Without any risk of embarrassment, you can put your whole soul into learning to waltz, tango, or cha-cha while perfecting each movement along the way.

Cost:

$49/DVDv

Many years ago, Librero's Ballroom Dance 101 was featured in an "As Seen on TV" ad and the instructors, Blanche and Emilio Librero, performed on the Late Show with David Letterman. The granulated photo quality of the website and old style design make it obvious that the glory days for this course have passed. The course is a series of two DVDs that can be purchased in a beginner's level, intermediate level, or advanced level version. Each DVD is approximately 2 hours and includes 15 step patterns. Each set comes with the instructional DVD, music CD, and cue cards.

Two courses are available on the Librero's Ballroom Dance 101 website. The first teaches "Big Band Swing & Nightclub Dancing" which includes the foxtrot, waltz, East Coast swing, West Coast swing, retro swing, disco/hustle, and blues/slow nightclub. The other collection teaches "Latin Dancing & Argentine Tango" which includes the rumba, cha cha, salsa/mambo, merengue, samba/cumbia, paso doble, and Argentine tango. Along with the courses, you can add your name and email to a free subscription list for "Librero's Dance Tip of the Month" to receive information on how to become a good dancer.

Each DVD set is $49 or you can purchase them together for $88. There is a 25% discount and free shipping for customers who order 4 or more DVDs at once. If you are unhappy with your purchase, Librero's offers a 90-day money back guarantee. If you need to contact the company for any reason, your only option is to call their toll-free number listed on the website.

You can preview a clip of the East Coast swing lesson to see what the course is like. We found it to be similar to the ballroom dance lessons offered by Librero's competitors. First, the particular dance step is demonstrated in full, then the men's part is shown slowly, then the women's part, and finally they bring both parts back together again with music.

Not only is this course not offering anything more unique than other competitors, but the quality of sound and visuals are out-of-date and not as enjoyable to follow along with as our higher-rated beginner ballroom dance courses.

Cost:

From $37 to $197

Salsa Crazy was founded in 1996 by Evan Margolin in San Francisco. The goal of the course is to continue worldwide expansion and teach the joy of salsa dancing to people of all skill levels. Unfortunately, much of this website is not only dedicated to selling the ballroom DVD course, but also enticing customers to take in-person classes in San Francisco, take a Salsa Crazy cruise, or to join their local Facebook group.

For $197, you will receive a combination of seven DVDs from Salsa Crazy. In these DVDs you will find video courses to learn only four dances: swing, foxtrot, rumba, and the waltz. You can purchase any of these seven DVDs individually for $37 if you don't want the entire set. The sales page for the DVDs shows the covers in fine print, so it's hard to tell exactly what material they cover and they don't show sample videos on the site. From the looks of the website, it's likely that the quality of the DVDs reflect the standards of 15+ years ago.

The Salsa Crazy website is archaic looking and is full of ads. If we're being honest, we felt like with each click we made we might be vulnerable to downloading a virus at the same time. The copyright hasn't been updated since 2009 and the most recent blog post is from 2013. One of the main advertisements on the home page is for Salsa Crazy's 20th anniversary party that took place in 2014, so it doesn't seem like the company is very active on their website. Some links are also broken and will direct you to an error page.

Overall, we are unimpressed with Salsa Crazy and would not recommend that you buy their DVD course. Not only is it the most expensive product we have seen in our search for online ballroom dance courses, but we can't guarantee what you'll receive once you order. There is a 30-day money back guarantee if you choose to order their course and find it unsatisfactory, but that doesn't do you any good if the company might not respond to your refund request. We suggest staying on the safe side and ordering lessons from one of our higher ranked online ballroom dance course companies.

The ability to become a ballroom dance pro from home will save you a significant amount of money. Between traveling and consistent in-person dance lessons, your costs would add up! Instead, with a one-time purchase, you can learn and relearn almost everything you need to know to be a confident, graceful ballroom dancer. Maybe you'll even get good enough that people will pay to watch you perform one day!

When searching for the best at-home ballroom dance lesson options, also consider the following things to ensure an enjoyable experience:

  • Cost. Make sure you are receiving plenty of material to teach you everything you want to know for the price you are charged for online lessons. Regardless, you'll likely still be saving lots of money compared to in-person classes!
  • Are the lessons modern? You don't want to dance to outdated music or feel like you're watching a movie from the 80's. Make sure you can download the content to whatever device will be easiest for you to use.
  • Return policy. If you purchase the ballroom dance course and are let down by the content, check to see if there is a return policy that allows you to receive a full refund.
