Cost:

From $28 to $265

Selection:

Over 1,000 barstools

When you first start shopping for your barstools at Walmart, you might feel a little overwhelmed. Much like walking the aisles at your nearest brick-and-mortar location, you'll soon see that your options are almost too numerous. Ladder back? Saddle seat? Wood or chrome/vinyl? Fortunately, the online Walmart store gives you the advantage of sorting through their more than 1000 counter stools and barstools with just a few clicks.

You'll use the options on the left side of the page to narrow down your choices:

  • Category: Swivel, Black, Wood, Full Back, Metal, and so on
  • Delivery & Pickup options
  • Chair back style
  • Style of the chair
  • Features: Adjustable, upholstery, etc.
  • Finish
  • Brand
  • Material
  • Top-to-bottom height
  • Width
  • Length
  • Price: enter your min/max or click on the boxes that indicate your budget
  • Retailer
  • Number of pieces
  • Seat shape
  • Popular sizes
  • Customer rating
  • Special offers
  • Color

Once you've got your list narrowed down - or even from the main barstools page - you can further refine the results according to price, top brands, store availability, and more. That means you won't have to spend your time digging through furniture styles that aren't a good fit for your needs.

Of course, this being Walmart, you're not going to find any high-end pieces here. Everything offered is under $300, so if you're looking for an ultra-luxe upgrade to your decor, this isn't the store for you. On the other hand, if budget is a concern and you're looking for a great selection, you'll find a nice range of counter stools and barstools on the Walmart online store.

One of the advantages of shopping with a well-known retailer is the availability of customer reviews. For example, the TMS Avery Adjustable-Height Bar Stool, sold in a set of 3, had more than 700 ratings at the time of our most recent visit. With 2-day delivery, multiple color options, and an average of 4 out of 5 stars, it's easy to see why that model of barstools is so popular.

If you're shopping at Walmart, you'll want to keep an eye on who will be fulfilling your order. Not sure what that means? Walmart, like many big-box retailers, often partners with smaller companies to offer you a wider range of products. So, as you scroll through the various barstools shown in their online store, you'll see "Sold & shipped by" under the price of many items. This means that while your order will be placed through the Walmart site, your barstools will be sent to you from a third-party company.

Why does that matter? Walmart's refund/return policies won't apply in these cases. You'll need to read the fine print and find out what the fulfillment company offers in that regard, because it may not be in your favor. You may still be able to make returns to a local Walmart store, but the terms depend on the individual sellers. Walmart itself doesn't specify a return timeframe, but they do say you can either return items in-store or ship them back at no cost to you - just sign into your account and print out the return label.

Walmart offers a nice selection of barstools at reasonable prices. And, with so many stores throughout the country plus free returns via mail on online orders, this big-box retailer makes it easy to take your furniture back if it doesn't meet your expectations - though that may vary if you purchase from a third-party marketplace seller through the Walmart site.

Cost:

From $61 to $1,125

Selection:

Over 400 barstools

At first glance, Barstool Direct looks like it could be a good option when shopping for counter stools and barstools. This retailer offers some customer-friendly perks like free shipping on every order and a "price beat" guarantee. You might get extra savings from pop-ups as you visit the Barstool Direct site. During our most recent shopping trip there, we got a 10% discount code if we signed up for their email list. Ironically, at the bottom of the site, there was a permanent offer of a 12% discount for signing up, so it could be anyone's guess which discount you'd actually get.

Barstool Direct carries a decent range of brands, with nearly 20 to choose from, and an inventory of just over 400 models and styles. On the main page of the site, there's a helpful guide to measuring your counter/bar height to get the right chair height to match.

This online store isn't as easy to use as some of its competitors' sites. To find the kind of barstool you're looking for, you'll have to start by clicking on the category - Wooden, Metal, Counter, Bar, etc. - and then select an attribute like features or finish. We would prefer a way to sort everything at the same time, rather than having to click through those options.

You might not get much detail when you click on a barstool that interests you. We were able to see basic dimensions, item weight, and processing time frame (6 weeks on some of the ones we considered!), but nothing about materials used, whether assembly would be required, etc. That seems to depend on the manufacturer/brand - some barstools had that information, while others lacked a description and had a very small product image.

In our last review of Barstool Direct, we found several areas of concern - and we were hoping to see positive changes since that time. Unfortunately, this company's reputation has actually gotten worse. The Better Business Bureau revoked the accreditation of Barstool Direct's parent company, Peazz, in mid-2019 for failing to respond promptly and professionally to customer complaints.

As we looked through dozens of negative reviews from unhappy shoppers, it was easy to see a pattern: credit cards charged for items that hadn't shipped, no responses when requesting a return, lack of response from customer representatives, and many other problems. That definitely doesn't sound like the company is making good on their "Peace of Mind Guarantee" for customer satisfaction. We also found that Barstool Direct makes it hard to get a refund with their 30-day return policy, often failing to respond to customers within that 1-month period.

With so many retailers of barstools who go to great lengths to keep their customers happy, there's just no good reason to shop with Barstool Direct. We encourage you to consider the higher-rated stores in our review.

Fortunately, there's an easy solution to the problem: buying barstools online. There's no easier way to compare all of the possibilities, leading you to the furniture that's exactly the right color, height and price with just a few clicks. Many of the retailers offering barstools have helpful tools on their site that can guide you through the process of taking measurements to ensure the best fit.

Best of all, these online stores usually offer customer-friendly perks like free delivery, generous return policies, and rewards programs that can save you money over their already-competitive prices. Why spend every weekend hoping to find your barstools locally - and then wondering how you'll fit them in your car for the drive home - when you can get exactly what you want shipped right to your front door?

With so many online stores offering barstools, how can you tell which one should get your business? Not all retailers are created equal, so use these criteria as a starting point for your shopping experience:

  • Selection. How many styles does the store carry? Does the retailer have a wide enough range for you to choose from in the height/material/price point you're considering?
  • Price. How competitive are the prices on barstools? Does the store offer a price match guarantee or any other extra savings?
  • Return Policy. If your barstools arrive and they're not a good fit, either in style or height, can you return them? What requirements do you have to follow to be eligible for a refund?
  • Reputation. What do other shoppers say about their experience with the retailer? Is the company rated by the BBB?
