The Best Air Purifiers

Who Makes the Best Air Purifiers?

The air purifier marketplace is a very mature one. That means there are a lot of well-established companies essentially offering the same products in different form factors and for different room sizes. That also means that air purifier manufacturers that can find a way to set themselves apart through innovative technologies, product designs, and form factors are going to stand out in the crowd of contenders.

Why would you even need an air purifier? Isn't the filter on your HVAC system enough? For some people, perhaps - but for those with pervasive airborne allergies, asthma, COPD, or any other host of respiratory conditions, a separate system is a must.

Top Consumer Reviews Best-In-Class Blue Ribbon Award

Alen air purifier products have a good reputation in that they are more customizable and able to fit in with the decor of various homes than air purifiers from most other manufacturers. Every device has been designed with attention to detail in how the user interacts with it and what they are likely to want to change or see in terms of performance characteristics. For example, there's an app for controlling more settings than can be controlled on the unit's own console as well as a smart sensor that will let you know how the quality of the air is changing over time.

Customizability of Color and Filters

One of the first things we noticed about Alen air purifiers is the customizability of each of their products. You don't have to sacrifice aesthetics to accommodate a large air purification system. If it matters to you how it looks sitting on your living room hardwood floors, you have a range of choices in detachable color panels to try to match the decor. And if the color scheme changes or you move it to a different room, you can simply order new panels to attach.

True HEPA filters

The air filter choices all are true HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters that come in a selection of three different types: pure, fresh, and pet. Pure filters capture dust, mold, germs, and allergens. Fresh filters do the same and also remove cooking odors, smoke, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds). The pet filter captures dust, mold, germs, allergens, and also pet dander and odors.

Subscribe to Filter Replacements

If you are weary of constantly having to re-order filters, Alen offers filter subscriptions. You'll get a 10% discount and a regularly-scheduled shipment of your choice of filters at a 6-, 9-, 12-, or 15-month interval as you specify. Filters are easy to replace by just opening the back of the unit, releasing the old filter, snapping in a new one, and closing the unit.

Convenient, Simple, and Comprehensive Purification Controls

You even have options for controlling your air purifier. The front panel buttons offer fan speed, current air quality, and filter longevity choices. You can also choose to dim the panel lights, lock the controls, or use an automatic mode. With the mobile app, you can also control additional features and get even more information about air quality at a distance for multiple air purifiers.

Best Air Purifiers

Solutions for Businesses, Schools, First Responders, and Military

For businesses and schools, as well as first responders and the military, Alen has large-scale, lab-tested solutions tailored to the noise, energy, and air quality needs of the facilities in which the air purifiers operate.

Alen offers a total of six different models of air purifiers. Prices range from $199 for the simplest and cheapest model to $749 for the most advanced and largest model. Both the least and most expensive models have high customer satisfaction ratings according to the manufacturer.

Return Policy and Guarantee

Alen air purifiers all carry a forever guarantee that includes alerts on updates and recalls, free replacement, and fast customer service. There is also a 1-year warranty for manufacturer's defects and workmanship that expires 12 months from the date of purchase. However, the forever guarantee and 1-year warranty are not valid for products shipped outside the continental U.S. and are non-transferable if you give away or sell your air purifier. If within 60 days of purchase you don't like the product, you can return it for a full refund.

Positive Reviews and Customer Feedback

There are many positive reviews of Alen air purifier products as well as customer service. People like the warranty replacement convenience and lack of hassle. They also like the quality of the units they purchased and how well they clean the air, the subscription filters, fewer allergy problems, and getting refunded the difference in after-purchase sales prices they saw online from other vendors. For those few who don't like the company or its products, they complained about products being shipped in less-than-new or damaged condition, noise, not being able to discern if it was helping clean the air, and leaking machines. In cases where customers were unhappy, the company responded with more information and an offer to fix the problem.

#1 Choice for Air Purifiers

Alen may be the air purifier brand you've never heard of - but one that can absolutely change how you look at getting cleaner air in your home. Who says your air purifier can't be stylish and effective? This is our top pick among brands of air purifiers.

An air quality sensor auto-adjusts the fan to keep the air condition optimized. In the DustMagnet family of air purifiers, prices start at $319.99 for the DustMagnet 5210i, $359.99 for the DustMagnet 5240i, $399.99 for the DustMagnet 5410i, and $459.99 for the DustMagnet 5440i. Each of these models progressively increases the spaces they're intended to serve.
  • The Protect models offer GermShield, a 24/7 protection against viruses and bacteria. This feature is important to anyone wanting to reduce exposure to COVID-19 or other infectious airborne pathogens. It also has HEPASilent Ultra filtration to maximize performance and energy efficiency. Protect's SmartFilters technology helps keep an accurate tab on filter life and has app-customizable features with voice control. Protect models are all for larger spaces. Large-space air purifiers start at $659.99 for the 7410i and $759.99 for the 7470i. For extra-large spaces, the Protect 7710i is $879.99 and the Protect 7770i is $979.99.
  • Classic air purifier models are a more basic design, but still contain a number of advanced features such as auto-adjust to current conditions (i-series), smart device control via WiFi through an app, a hidden control panel, and steel construction. The Classic is one of the more affordable models starting at $276.00 for the 480i. The 280i is $429.99. The Classic 605 is $332.00. And the Classic 680i is $360.00.
  • The Pro family of Blueair air purifier models is built for larger workshops, studios, and office spaces. It has modular filters you can stack for addressing various air issues and an optional AHAM-verified Air Intelligence Module (AIM) with professional-grade performance under CADR guidelines. It has a minimalist design and cycles room air every 12.5 minutes. For the Pro model, expect to pay $349.99 for the Pro M and $489.99 for the Pro L.

Filter Subscriptions = 15% Discount

Filter subscriptions are available with Blueair with a 15% discount on air filters if you subscribe vs. buying them individually as needed. You can join for free, decide your delivery schedule, and cancel at any time. Filters are delivered right to your door and you also get an extended warranty and exclusive product perks.

Business and Classroom Solutions

Blueair air purifiers are evaluated independently for performance in offices, classrooms, and other workplace environments. They are verified by AHAM, Energy Star, and the California Air Resources Board for quality and efficiency. In particular, for classrooms, the Child Health Academy recommends the Blue Pure 311 Auto, Protect 7470i, Classic 605, and Pro L models.

Best Air Purifiers

60-Day Returns and Warranty

Every Blueair air purifier can be returned, in its original packaging, with proof of purchase for a full refund for any reason within 60 days of the original date of purchase. You must obtain a Return Authorization Number (RA#) before shipping it back, however. To get warranty service, you just reach out to their customer service team to see if your device qualifies for service under their requirements. Coverage varies based on the product.

Reviews and Feedback are Good Overall

On major consumer shopping websites, the reviews were considerably better for each of Blueair's devices with lots of five-star ratings and few complaints. On the Better Business Bureau website, they have an accredited "B" rating with almost two dozen negative reviews, mostly about customer service issues.

Review confusion

On at least one general product review site, a number of reviews for Blue Air (an airline) are intermixed with reviews for Blueair air purifiers, so it's not immediately apparent what the overall sentiment is for the air purifiers on that site. However, a larger number of reviews for Blueair than we preferred to see were negative reviews about customer service issues. People complained about noisy devices, not being able to get timely refunds for non-working units, and issues with filter delivery. Blueair seemed to only respond to correct complaints about airline issues but not about air purifiers.

Second Choice for Air Purifiers

Despite the complaints, Blueair is a really solid brand with some great-looking and innovative products as well as an offering to produce custom business solutions. It's also wonderful that they have advocacy programs and donations for the respiratory health of children worldwide. For all of these reasons, Blueair air purifiers get our strong recommendation.

Dyson Review 4 Star Rating

4 Star Rating
  • Captures 99.97% of fine particles as small as 0.3 microns
  • Multiple functions include air purification, heating, cooling, and humidity control
  • Air-purifying noise-canceling headphones
  • 2-year warranty
  • Money-back guarantee
  • Free shipping

Dyson's air purification product category is divided into three categories: regular air purification, air purification plus heating, and air purification plus humidification. Several models add better filtration, destruction of formaldehyde gasses, more intelligent onboard software, and a mobile app. Costs range from $399.99 on the low end to $939.99 on the high end.

Product Innovations that Stand Out

The first thing that caught our eye was a new product that Dyson is preparing to roll out. If the air where you live resembles the setting of a dystopian movie, you may be interested in the Dyson Zone. They're headphones that also purify the air around your face. The compressor fans and filters are built into a pair of active noise-canceling headphones. The super clean air is funneled across your nose and mouth via a plastic mask that extends from each headphone. So, as you thunder across the desert wasteland after the apocalypse, you'll be able to cancel out the noise from your rig's missing muffler, listen to the soundtrack from "Mad Max" , and breathe cleaner air than the bandits chasing you for whatever resources they're trying to take from you.

Heat, Cool, and Humidify

Dyson's air purification devices have the ability to heat, cool, or humidify your home. In addition to regular particle filtration, some of Dyson's models actually detect and destroy formaldehyde that is "out-gassed" from various household items that contain the chemical as a preservative.

Purify and cool

The Dyson Pure Cool TP09, the Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact TP7A, and the Dyson Pure Cool TP01 purifying fin each purify and cool and circulate the air with HEPA filtration systems that trap allergens, bacteria, smoke, and gasses. The TP09 and TP7A each add software to intelligently control the device, have a fully sealed HEPA filter, report pollution on an LCD screen, and are 20% quieter than the TP01. The TP09 additionally removes formaldehyde and can be controlled with the Dyson Link app.

Purify, cool, and heat

The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP07, the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09, and the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool HP01 all purify, heat, cool, and circulate your air with HEPA filtration. However, only the HP07 and HP09 offer intelligent software, are re-engineered to deliver 50% cleaner air, have fully-sealed HEPA filters, report pollution in real-time on the LCD screen, and are controlled with the Dyson Link App. Only the HP09 removes formaldehyde from the air.

Best Air Purifiers

Purify, cool, and humidify

Dyson purifying humidifier fans include the Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool Formaldehyde PH04 and the Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool Autoreact PH3A. Both intelligently purify, cool, and humidify the air (also removing 99.9% of bacteria in water vapor), have fully sealed HEPA filtration, have a deep clean cycle to eliminate mineral buildup and bacteria, and report pollution on an LCD screen. Only the PH04 removes formaldehyde and can be controlled with the Dyson Link app.

Prices Range from $399-$939

Dyson air purifiers range in price from $399.99 to $939.99. The pricing depends on the job the air purifier does.

  • Cooling air purifiers like the Dyson Pure Cool TP01 purifying fin, the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09, or the Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact TP7A cost $399.99, $519.99, and $549.99, respectively.
  • Dyson's air purifiers with heaters actually both heat and cool your room. The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP07 is $669.99 and the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09 is $769.99. The Dyson Pure Hot+Cool HP01 costs $499.99.
  • An air purifier with a humidifier, like the Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool Formaldehyde PH04, costs $919.99 or $939.99 depending on the color you select. The Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool Autoreact PH3A is $799.99.

Warranty and Return Requirements

Because Dyson sells much more than air purifiers, their website only states that warranty information is contained in the manual for the particular product. However, our direct experience with Dyson products is that their warranty is very generous, with many products carrying an up to 5-year warranty. When we called to have a non-purifier device repaired, we found that even though the product hadn't been registered, the warranty still applied and we were able to quickly get it repaired with shipping costs also included. Typically, any Dyson purchase can be returned for a full refund within 30 days from the date of delivery or the purchase date depending on where it was purchased.

Customer Experiences are Mostly Positive

The Dyson brand has enormous loyalty and a good reputation. People who own Dyson products are very happy with them in general. They like the helpful and friendly customer service, the cleanliness and temperature and humidity regulation of the air, and the ease of buying filters online. Those with complaints said they didn't like how their customer service issues were handled, they had problems with the air purifier not working as expected, or that it was hard to get filters shipped on time. However, Dyson is active in many review forums and does respond to complaints.

Compelling Brand With Higher Prices

Dyson is a leading brand, like the Apple of all things air-related. So we're not surprised that their prices are going to reflect that recognizability and be tied to the loyalty their customers have. We'd love to see them reduce those prices, but that isn't a realistic expectation - and we're honestly okay with that, because these air purifiers are innovative, effective, and even kind of fun to use.

Bissell Review 4 Star Rating

4 Star Rating
  • Captures dust particles 0.3 microns or less
  • HEPA +3 stage filtration filters 99.97% of particulates
  • Automatic particle concentration detection and adjustment
  • Quiet fan operation
  • Free shipping on orders over $50
  • Purchase financing available
  • 30-day satisfaction guarantee

Most consumers recognize and associate the Bissell company name with floor and carpet cleaners. However, Bissell does have a line of indoor air purifiers as well. Bissell air purifiers capture 99.97% of dust particles that are 0.3 microns or smaller. While the selection is indeed smaller than we would have liked, there is enough variety to fit most consumer needs.

Surprisingly Small Number of Options

Bissell's offerings are rather sparse for such a big brand name with only three unique air purification products. They are divided into four single or bundled offerings based on room size: extra large, large, medium-large, and small.

  • The Air400 air purifier for extra large rooms is Bissell's most powerful and second most popular model with a room coverage CADR (clean air delivery rate) of 432 square feet. It has a 1-, 4-, and 8-hour self-timer, 5 fan speeds, auto mode on/off, and air quality feedback. This purifier uses a pre-filter, HEPA, and carbon filter.
  • The Air320 Max air purifier is for medium-large rooms as it is CADR rated for 266 square feet. It has 5 fan speeds but no self-timer. It also has auto mode on/off and air quality feedback. This purifier uses a pre-filter, HEPA, and carbon filter.
  • The MyAir Personal air purifier is for small spaces, has a CADR rating of up to 100 square feet, and has only 3 fan speeds. But it has a 1-, 4-, and 8-hour self-timer. There is no auto mode to turn it on or off. This purifier uses a carbon filter, but only a "high efficiency" filter in place of the pre-filter and HEPA filter.
  • The Air320 Max & MYair Pro Bundle combines two separate devices for large rooms of up to 308 square feet.

Additional Features Worth Noting

The automated "CirQulate" system has a sensor that watches, reports on, and activates different fan speeds depending on the changes to indoor air quality. Silent fan technology puts the sound level to something appropriate for a library or nursery. Two of the three air purifiers have a HEPA filter with three stages of capture for pollen, dust, smoke, hair, pet dander, and odors that result in 99.97% of 0.3-micron particles being removed from the air. And at night, a night mode activates to reduce the amount of light from the digital display.

Pricing with Financing Available

The air400 is $360.49. It can be paid for with 4 interest-free payments or as low as $33/month with Affirm, their lending partner. The air320 Max is between $339.99 and $436.57, depending on the current special, with 4 interest-free payments or as low as $31/month with Affirm financing. The MyAir is between $77.69 and $92.69 at 4 interest-free payments of $20 with Affirm financing. Shipping is free for orders $50 and over.

Best Air Purifiers

Save - and Help Too

If you sign up for auto-shipments of filters, you save 10% over the cost of ordering them without a subscription. And, with every purchase, Bissell makes a donation to the Bissell Pet Foundation to benefit shelter pets and provide homes for over 200,000 dogs and cats.

30-Day Guarantees and Returns

There is a 30-day satisfaction guarantee with a refund and at-home pickup of your return, but there is a charge of $4.95 in return shipping.

Good Customer Feedback

Customers who purchased Bissell air purification products from a number of online outlets are generally delighted with their purchases. Owners who like Bissell products enjoyed cleaner, clearer, fresher air, fewer allergy problems, fewer pet hair issues, effective filters, and low noise levels. Those who reported bad experiences stated they had trouble with the units producing too much noise or ceasing to function much too soon in the expected lifetime of the product. Some also didn't like the smallest unit's non-HEPA filter, the unwieldy size of larger units, or the high cost compared to other higher-quality products on the market from other manufacturers.

Less Confidence Due To Small Selection

With their very limited set of air purification devices, it seems to us the Bissell brand is only minimally committed to the air purification market. When we later see them add more devices with variations and innovations, we'll consider a higher ranking.

Coway Review 3.5 Star Rating

3.5 Star Rating
  • HyperCaptive air filter system captures and removes over 99.98% of Covid viruses
  • Solutions for clinics, hospitals, retail, offices, and schools
  • Real-time monitoring with smart mode
  • Mobile app
  • Google Home & Amazon Alexa integration
  • 1-year warranty for all products + 3-year and 5-year warranties for specific models

Coway air purification systems are available in over a dozen different sizes, each with very similar capabilities, and divided up according to how much air volume they're each able to clean. The prices range from $299 to $635 with various filter types costing $25-$99. There are nine different colors to choose from depending on the model you purchase.

Product Specifications

Coway sells one brand of air purifier, the Airmega, in multiple models depending on room size and features.

  • For large spaces of 1,256-1,560 square feet, you can choose between the Airmega 400S, 400, 300S, and 300 models.
  • Medium spaces of 500-999 square feet favor the Airmega IconS, Icon, 250S, 250, and 240 units.
  • For small spaces of 214-361 square feet, your choices are the Airmega 160, 150, 200M, AP-1512HH, and AP-1512HHS.

Among all these choices, all air purifiers have real-time monitoring of air quality and filter life. Each can have activated carbon + Green True HEPA washable pre-filter + Max2 Filter sets installed on the larger models. The smaller models lack the "Max2" features.

Fan speeds and timers

All air purifiers have up to 3 fan speeds and timers. The larger room units also have special modes for sleep. There are no timers for the 160 and 150 models. Only the "S" models have a separate iOS or Android mobile app for voice control via Amazon Alexa and Google Home. Color choices vary among the different models and include graphite, white, warm gray, beige, dove white, black, port navy, sage green, and peony pink.

Prices Based on Capacity

Airmega large space air purifiers range from $400-$635. Medium space air purifiers cost between $299 and $699. For small space units, the cost is between $348 and $513. Coway also offers numerous filtration options depending on the air purifier you purchase. Prices for individual filters range from $25 to $99.

Best Air Purifiers

Business and School Features

For clinics, hospitals, retail stores, offices, and schools, Coway has done research and testing of multiple solutions. You can get a quote for your particular organization or situation on their website.

1- to 5-Year Warranties and 30-Day Returns

You can return your Coway air purifier product within 30 days of the shipped date provided you meet certain conditions. The warranty on Coway's Airmega products includes a 1-year warranty for all products, and a 3-year warranty for the 250S, 250, 240, 230, AP-1512HHS, AP-1512HH, 200M, AP-1216L, 160, 150, and AP-0512NH air purifiers. For the 400S, 400, 300S, 300, Icon, and IconS air purifiers, there is a 5-year warranty. Filters are not included in the general warranty, nor are certain parts and circumstances. Be sure to check the fine print.

Customer Sentiment is mixed

As for how people like the Airmega air purifiers they bought from Coway, major online retail sites show high average ratings with a large number of people saying they like the features of the products they purchased. As a measure of customer service, Coway has not been satisfactorily responsive to complaints lodged against it through the Better Business Bureau. Even with only two dozen complaints closed in the last 3 years, and half as many in the last 12 months, they have only earned a "D-" rating (no accreditation), for failing to respond to issues filed there.

Lack of Customer Care

Despite their nice designs and business and school offerings, because of Coway's poor Better Business Bureau showing we are not able to recommend their products as highly as many of its rivals. You could get fantastic air quality from their purifiers, but getting help if there's a problem might prove challenging.

Honeywell Review 3 Star Rating

3 Star Rating
  • HEPA filter
  • UV technology
  • Energy Star
  • Insight Display
  • QuiteCare Tech
  • Up to 6 cleaning levels

Honeywell is a household brand name that most Americans recognize from ubiquitous TV commercials over the past several decades. They make everything from thermostats and alarm systems to power systems and air conditioners. So it's no surprise that air purifiers would be added to their list of household appliances. While there were no real problems we could detect with their products, the sheer number of offerings and too few impactful differences between them made it hard to rate them very high compared to other vendors. Sometimes less is more.

Extensive Product Selection and Offerings

The first thing to notice about Honeywell air purifiers is the sheer number of available products. Honeywell currently has 32 different air purifier systems, far too many to meaningfully and comprehensively compare or even list them all here in this review. So, we'll focus on just the newest and more popular models under the assumption that most customers will want information about the latest and most advanced air purifiers.

Focus on small to medium rooms

Generally, Honeywell's air purifiers only address room sizes below 500 square feet, so if you're looking for a solution that covers more area and air volume, you may want to consider the other manufacturers in this review. And, there are only two colors for all Honeywell air purifiers: black and white. So, if you need something to complement your decor, you'll want to look at the offerings of Alen or other manufacturers who offer such customization.

Variety of features

Features of various models include HEPA filters, permanent filters, and UV technology to kill bacteria and other pathogens. Other features are between 2 and 6 cleaning levels, a 360-degree air intake, Energy Star compliance, an advanced display, Bluetooth control, and quiet fan operation.

Top selling models

For the smaller rooms in which people may need to purify the air, Honeywell's prices are among the lowest we've seen. The top five models in terms of recency and popularity include:

  • InSight HEPA Compact Tower Air Purifier HPA080B. This model sells for $109.95.
  • True HEPA Air Purifier with Allergen Remover HPA304. This model sells for $269.95.
  • InSight HEPA Air Purifier HPA5300B. This model sells for $319.95.
  • Bluetooth Smart True HEPA Air Purifier HPA8350B. This model sells for $339.95.
  • Professional Series True HEPA Air Purifier HPA600B. This model sells for $539.95.

Doesn't Offer a Focus on Form

Overall, we're not particularly "wowed" by what we see offered by Honeywell. The air purifiers seem full-featured and have good ratings, but they are pretty uninspiring in terms of aesthetics and overall form factor. And the fact that Honeywell has air purifiers as a small part of its overall catalog of other unrelated consumer appliances causes doubt as to whether they're as focused on quality and details as are other companies we reviewed that only sell air purifiers.

Best Air Purifiers

Warranty and shipping

Other than to state that warranties start from the date of purchase with applicable receipt and that OEM products carry the manufacturer's warranty, Honeywell doesn't have more details on its warranty for its own air purifiers or, more broadly, its other products. We assume that each product comes with its own warranty card spelling out the details for that product. Products are only shipped on weekdays and non-holidays with a 3 PM CST cutoff and only to locations in the United States.

30 day return policy

The return policy across all Honeywell products is within 30 days from the date you receive the item with a return merchandise authorization number. All returns are subject to a 10-30% restocking fee unless damaged in transit or defective.

Customer Reactions Vary Depending on Where You Look

All the products listed on Honeywell's own website have four- and five-star ratings. In other places we looked, the ratings were pretty dismal. People complained that their air purifiers broke right away, didn't help with their allergies, customer support was unhelpful, and it was hard to get proper filters. Those who liked Honeywell air purifiers said they worked properly and customer service was helpful.

Too Many Variants and Not Enough Customer Service

Looking at Honeywell's comparatively immense number of air purification devices was overwhelming. Conversely, we found the customer service experience to be underwhelming for too many people who bought Honeywell air purifiers. We give this brand a medium rating.

InvisiClean Review 3 Star Rating

3 Star Rating
  • Free shipping to the lower 48 U.S.
  • True HEPA filters capture 99.98% of particles 0.3 microns in size
  • Between four and five levels of cleaning, controlled independently
  • Energy efficient motor with four power levels
  • Power modes for low noise or heavy cleaning
  • Sleep mode to turn off lights and timer mode to turn off purifier
  • Independently tested and approved with Intertek/ETL
  • CARB, CE, and UL-867 approved with ozone emissions certification

The InvisiClean line of air purifier products is divided into price points according to the number of levels of cleaning or different fan speeds and the sizes of the rooms they clean. That is, except for the interesting inclusion of a personal wearable air filter for cleaning the air immediately in one's vicinity. The prices are affordable and there seems to be something for everyone. The website, however, is a bit spare and unprofessionally designed compared to other manufacturers. It's hard to find shipping, returns, and warranty information. And the customer service options are limited.

Features and Specifications

There are 6 Invisiclean air purifier products to choose from. Prices for InvisiClean air purifiers are among the lowest we've reviewed. At the highest, most capable end there are the Claro and the Aura II 4 in 1 Air Purifiers. Next, is the Sensa Air Purifier followed by the Mini Aura 5 in 1, Stella 5 in 1, and the Personal Mini Air Purifier.

  • The Claro 4 in 1 and the Aura II feature four levels of cleaning (activated charcoal pre-filter, True HEPA, UV-C light, and ionizer) all of which can be separately controlled. It has a high-efficiency motor that uses between 3 and 47 watts of power depending on the power level the user selects (Low, Med, High, and Turbo). It also has a sleep mode to turn off the lights and a self-timer to shut off the air purifier after 2, 4, or 8 hours. The Claro 4 in 1 is only 13.25 lbs, covers up to 1,500 square feet, and has an LED display to show temperature, humidity, and PM 2.5 air quality. The Aura II weighs only 8.9 lbs and covers up to 1,276 square feet. The Claro 4-in-1 sells for $269.95, and the Aura II 4 in 1 sells for $199.99.
  • The Sensa has an integrated air quality sensor to automatically change the fan speed between 6 different speeds. Its True HEPA and activated carbon pre-filter capture up to 99.985% of particles up to 0.3 microns in size and 99.91% of particles up to 0.1 microns. It also has a child safety lock, sleep mode, and timer. It does best in medium to large room sizes up to 1,276 square feet. The Sensa purifier lists at $149.95.
  • The Mini Aura 5 in 1 is even smaller at 7.4 lbs and still has 5 levels of cleaning power via a prefilter, activated charcoal filter, H13 True HEPA, UV-C light, and an ionizer that can be controlled independently. It has only 3 power levels (Low, Med, and High) with a power usage of 60 watts. There is a lights-out sleep mode and a 2, 4, or 8-hour self-timer. The Mini Aura 5-in-1 goes for $99.95.
  • The Stella 5 in 1 weighs a mere 4.4 lbs and has 5 cleaning levels (prefilter, carbon, H13 True HEPA, UV-C, and ionizer). Power usage is only 34 watts. It has a sleep mode for lights and a self-timer. The Stella 5-in-1 air purifier costs $79.95.
  • Lastly, there's the InvisiClean Personal Mini Air Purifier. It's a device you can hang around your neck or put on your belt to provide local air filtering in a car, plane, or public place to remove odors, smoke, and allergens. It has an integrated rechargeable battery that lasts over 200 hours. It's a nice addition to the InvisiClean lineup with a discrete and utilitarian design. But, even with its practicality, it's still not nearly as conversation-starting, dystopian-cool as the Dyson Zone headphone air filter. This purifier sells for $49.95.

Confusing to Know What To Do If You Need To Return It

InvisiClean's return policy says you can return it for any reason if you're not satisfied for up to 30 days from when it was purchased with a return merchandise authorization. However, it also says you cannot return a used InvisiClean device unless it's defective. It stands to reason that you can't know whether a device is defective unless you've used it, so it's hard to understand. There is a 15% restocking fee if it is not returned new and unused or doesn't contain all the materials included in the original shipment.

Reviews and Sentiments Usually Are Positive

Reviewers of the products said they generally like and recommend InvisiClean products. One person said it helped clean remaining mold issues after a cleanup. Another said it helped with smoke from wildfires. Others said it was easy to clean and maintain. Some, however, were mildly irritated that, in their cases, it was hard to tell from smelling the air if it was working right. They didn't have a clear indication on the panel of whether the unit they were using was actually cleaning the air.

Lack of Attention to Detail

The InvisiClean brand experience being reflected by the website experience, there was a certain lack of attention to detail when it came to the ability to effectively compare the products and get information about warranties and returns. That with the customer experience of the product and not knowing if it was cleaning led us to not rate InvisiClean very highly.

Levoit Review 3 Star Rating

3 Star Rating
  • Free shipping
  • 2-year limited warranty
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

Levoit is a company that sells air purifiers in addition to humidifiers and vacuums. Their website offers a virtual starter kit to help you select an air purifier and also FAQs and resources like manuals, warranty, product registration, and contact information for each device. We did notice, however, that what Levoit considers its "large" room category is comparatively small compared to other manufacturers, so be aware of the room size each air purifier in the "Large" category will actually accommodate.

Product Offerings and Features

There are 19 different models of Levoit air purifiers, so we're limiting our review to just the top six most popular and newer models. We would have liked to use their website's side-by-side product comparison tool, but they neglected to add needed product information to make that useful.

The 6 most popular models

Prices for the popular and new Levoit air purifiers we reviewed are very affordable compared to other manufacturers. These include:

  • The Core 300 True HEPA is the most popular Levoit product. It covers up to 219 square feet with an activated carbon filter and a True HEPA filter to neutralize odors, VOCs, and 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns in size. It is ultra quiet with noise levels as low as 24dB. This model costs $99.99.
  • The Core 400S has an effective range of 403 square feet and weighs 14.12 lbs. It features control via a mobile app and voice control through Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant and includes an air quality indicator. Its 3-stage filtration captures air particles, bacteria, mold, and viruses. This model costs $219.99.
  • The Core P360 Pet Care is designed for pet owners and has a 3-stage filtration system that removes pet fur, dander, airborne particles, and odors. It is quiet at 24dB depending on the fan speed and a 219 square foot range. This model costs $129.99.
  • The Core Mini is for rooms 178 square feet or less. It has a low noise level on its lowest setting and a 3-stage filtration system to capture smoke, odors, fumes, and 97% of particles. You can add essential oils to change the scent of the atmosphere. This model costs $49.99.
  • The Core 600S Smart True HEPA has VortexAir technology that spins the air so that it circulates more efficiently. It is built for 635 square foot room spaces. It has AirSight Plus which scans the air for particles and adjusts the fan speed accordingly. It includes app control and voice recognition through Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. This model costs $299.99.
  • Finally, the PlasmaPro 400S Smart True HEPA cleans the air in rooms up to 403 square feet. The unique plasma function creates negative and positive ions that bind with particles and break down their molecules. This model costs $289.99.

Good Policies for Shipping, Returns, and Warranties

Levoit offers free shipping in the 48 contiguous states and doesn't ship internationally. Returns can happen anytime within 30 days of the purchase date and will be replaced or refunded with no restocking fees. Levoit air purifiers have a 2-year warranty limited to normal use and care.

Positive Customer Sentiments

As reported directly on the Levoit website, most customers had no problems and nothing bad to say about their experiences with the Levoit air purifier products we've reviewed. As reported on major online marketplaces selling Levoit products, the many, many reviews we saw were also overwhelmingly positive. There were a few negative reviews on one public review site about bad customer service, air purifiers that wouldn't turn on, and issues with certain batches of products the company had once shipped.

Low Prices and Low Aesthetics

If you're mainly concerned about low prices, Levoit air purifiers may be what you want. We just found the overall design and look of each of their products to be very lackluster and uninteresting overall for something you have to look at every day. So, we can't give it a high rating.

  • Patented HyperHEPA filtration
  • Stunning furniture-like design and craftsmanship
  • SARS-CoV-2 virus mitigation
  • Filters 99.5% of particles greater than 0.003 microns, gasses, and odors
  • Long average filter life of 12-18 months depending on model
  • Up to 1,125 square feet of room coverage with up to 6 fan speeds
  • 10-year warranty on parts and labor (excluding filters) on most models

iQAir has a moderately-sized inventory of air purifiers that are intended for various situations such as SARS-CoV-2 mitigation, chemical sensitivities, luxury, desk, and vehicles. Their models are relatively sophisticated and carry a related high price tag. Especially high in price is the luxury woodgrain-finish Klaus series air purifier. Replacement filters are rated with long lifetimes which could explain their expensive prices.

Specifications, Offerings, and Product Features

iQAir sells four air purifier models for different room sizes, dimensions, and style choices. All units filter 99% or more of particles greater than 0.003 microns as well as an up to 10-year warranty on parts and labor (excluding filters).

  • The HealthPro Plus filters particles, gasses, and odors and has an average filter life of 18 months for the PreMax filter, 2 years for the V5 cell, and 4 years and 2 months for the HyperHEPA filter. It has six selectable fan speeds and a maximum coverage of 1,125 square feet. This model sells for $899.
  • The HealthPro Compact has a PreMax filter longevity of 16 months and the HyperHEPA filter lasts 3 years and 9 months. It has 6 selectable fan speeds and covers up to 1,240 square feet. This purifier lists for $799.
  • The Klaus Series has a beautiful woodgrain design for integration into more elegant interior decor. Its PreMax filter lasts 18 months, the V5 cell lasts 2 years, and the HyperHPEA filter lasts 4 years and 2 months. This model sells for a whopping $2,500.
  • The Atem Desk air purifier sits on a desk. Its HyperHEPA filter lasts 1 year and it has 3 selectable fan speeds. It covers up to 150 square feet and has a 3-year warranty on parts and labor. This purifier sells for $399.

Additional purifier products

There are other products iQAir sells, such as the GC MultiGas, which addresses multiple chemical sensitivities. The Atem Car air purifier is similar to the Desk air purifier and can be mounted to the back of a driver or front passenger seat in a car. The iQAir Mask is a leak-proof face mask that gently conforms and seals to your unique facial structure and prevents polluted air from leaking in.

Whole-house system

A custom whole-house system is available that can deliver an 85-95% reduction in airborne particles over 0.003 microns. Finally, the AirVisual Series air quality detector desktop device measures and alerts you to air pollution. It connects to the Internet and has an app to let you monitor air quality remotely. Filter replacements are somewhat expensive, however. It may be due to their longevity and not needing replacement so often, but the prices seemed quite high compared to other manufacturers.

Unused and unopened products can be returned 30 days from the receipt of the product with no restocking charges. Opened products are subject to a 15% restocking fee. Customer Reactions and Reviews

Reviews of the most popular products IQAir sells are very positive. People really like the outer design of the air filters as well as the cleaner air they experience. Those who didn't like the product said it was not as good of a product for what they paid for it as they had expected. One product owner compared their regular air conditioning filter with their iQAir filter after the same amount of time running. The iQAir filter didn't have anything on it but the air conditioning filter had a lot of dust and debris, leading the user to believe the iQAir purifier was not doing its job.

Not Doing Its Job

The fact that some reviewers went to a lot of trouble to test their devices and found them not filling up their filters with particulates when they knew there were particulates to fill them with was a real problem for us when considering how to rank iQAir. Product beauty won't win the day for them if it doesn't work, so we're giving them a low rating.

  • 3- to 5-stage filtration
  • WiFI, Alexa, and DRS
  • 2-year warranty
  • Filter replacement indicator
  • AHAM, Energy Star, and UL listed
  • Free shipping
  • Hassle-free returns

Winix sells 12 different air purifiers and 28 filter types to fit them in various configurations. Their website was somewhat underwhelming, causing us to have to do a lot of work to research each of the air purifiers' individual attributes instead of providing a single, easy-to-use comparison chart. The products are also very undifferentiated, so selection criteria really only came down to room size. They do provide free shipping and no-hassle returns, but otherwise, their product offerings are unremarkable compared to other manufacturers.

Product Feature Array

The most popular and newest Winix air purifiers include the following models:

  • The C535 air purifier is a 3-stage True HEPA air purifier that uses PlasmaWave® technology to ionize and break down particles. It is for 360 to 1,740 square foot rooms and circulates air within 1 hour. The activated carbon filter reduces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors from pets, cooking, and smoke. The C535 sells for $149.99.
  • The 5300-2 air purifier has a 4-stage True HEPA filtration system and PlasmaWave® technology. It also features a washable fine mesh pre-filter that captures all the largest particles first and an activated carbon filter for smoke and other odors. It is meant for rooms 360 to 1,740 square feet in size. This model sells for $199.99.
  • The A230 air purifier is an all-in-one 4-stage air purifier that cleans rooms up to 1,110 square feet in one hour. It has a non-washable fine mesh pre-filter and PlasmaWave® technology to ionize and destroy particles. It sells for $119.99.
  • If you need to clear the air in a much larger room, the new 9800 air purifier is a 4-stage workhorse that cleans 2,420 square feet in about one hour. You can also control it using a WiFi-enabled smart app on a mobile device. It has a washable fine mesh pre-filter and uses PlasmaWave® ionization. This purifier sells at $329.99.
  • The new XLC air purifier has caster wheels for moving it around on hard, flat surfaces. It cleans the air in rooms from 620 square feet in minutes up to 3,000 square feet in 1 hour. • Lastly, the new A231 air purifier provides coverage of from 230 to up to 1,110 square feet with a 4-stage, 360-degree filtration configuration. Shipping, warranty, and returns

Shipping is free within the 48 contiguous states. Warranty and returns are direct to Winix and limited to purchases through authorized dealers or retailers. They're also handled only within the warranty periods specific to individual models.

Mixed customer reviews

Winix got pretty bad reviews on general public review sites. People were dissatisfied with replacement filter costs and bad customer service. Reviews on major marketplaces were a lot better with people liking the product's effectiveness and customer service. Those not happy complained of lots of fan noise, no manual, and insufficient detection of odors and smoke.

Not Making It Easy For Buyers

Winix's undifferentiated offerings and a difficult shopping experience to find any differences at all made it hard for us to figure out which devices would be best suited to different environments. They also have a customer service issue to deal with, so we can't rate them anything but low.

Compare the Best Reviews

Continued from above...

We looked at a huge variety of brands and devices to compare their individual features across a number of factors including room size, filter technology, convenience and ease of operation, energy efficiency, innovation, and even aesthetics.

When shopping for air purifiers, it is important to keep the following factors in mind:

  • Product Features. How big of a room will the product work effectively for? How quickly does the air fully circulate? How many filter types are available and what do they each do? Is there a mobile app that connects to WiFi so you can control the device from anywhere? Which certifications does each air purifier have?
  • Pricing. How expensive is the highest-end air purifier and how many square feet can it clear the air for? How much do replacement filters cost as a percentage of the price of the air purifier? Is there a high energy cost to running the air purifier continuously?
  • Shipping. Does the manufacturer or retailer offer free shipping for all products or just for ones at a specific cost threshold?
  • Returns. How are returns handled? How long is it between when you buy the product and when you can initiate a return?
  • Warranty. What is the warranty period for each product? Regardless of the period, what other stipulations and conditions do the manufacturers place on being able to redeem the warranty and get the unit repaired or replaced?
  • Customer Reviews. Do customers feel satisfied with the product and with the customer service they're receiving? Do they have confidence that the air purifier is doing its job?

Air Purifier FAQ

Air purifiers are machines that clean the air in a room or in an entire home or office. They remove pollutants like pollen, pet dander, and dust mites from the air you breathe. Given that the EPA says that the level of indoor pollutants can be as much as five times higher than outdoors, it's obvious why so many people use an air purifier to breathe easy!
An air purifier draws in the air from the environment, passes it through a filter that catches pollutants and/or odors (depending on the filtration type you choose), and pushes out clean air into the room. Some purifiers are portable, while others are installed with your HVAC system to clean the air in your whole house.
HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air; these filters remove 99.97% of any particles that are 0.3 microns or larger, making them the best choice if you're trying to remove dust mite residue, pollen and pet dander particles from your air. Carbon filters target chemicals and odors, like cigarette smoke, kitchen smells, pet odor, and so on.
They can be - but they don't have to be. You can find small single-room air purifiers for under $60, but most fall in the $200-$700 range. Whole-house air purification systems are going to be the most costly, usually from $1,000 to $5,000+ (which includes professional installation). And, don't forget to factor in the cost of filters, which will need to be replaced periodically depending on the manufacturer's recommendations.
Check the instructions on your machine. Yours may have filters that can be cleaned and reused, or they may have to be replaced every time. Expect your air purifier to have anywhere from 2-6 filters that need to be changed every 6-12 months - but again, be sure to read the specs on your particular air purifier and follow the recommended maintenance schedule.
Most manufacturers recommend running your air purifier continuously. If yours comes with multiple speeds, you can set it to a lower speed while you're away to save energy and then turn it up when you return.
That depends on the machine you choose. If you buy a portable one designed to cover a single room, it will typically cover up to 700 sq.ft. Read the specs carefully to determine if the air purifier you're considering will be effective in the space where you intend to use it. For larger-scale air purification, a whole-house model might be a better investment.
Not necessarily. Most machines will be louder when you first turn them on, to get a good start on cleaning the air in the room you're in. But, once the pollutants have largely been removed, the fan speed usually slows down automatically for quieter operation. They're typically not much louder than a portable fan.
