The local forecast said that pollen is high, and maybe you've caught yourself running to the medicine cabinet for antihistamines lately, or you had an out-of-the-blue itchy throat the last time you ate a favorite food. Naturally, you're thinking "I bet it's an allergy!” Did you know that around 50 million people in the United States suffer from allergies each year?
This includes seasonal allergies, food allergies, and allergic asthma. Allergy tests are the essential tools that can help you identify specific allergens causing your reactions. When you undergo allergy testing, common things tested for include pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mold, various foods (like nuts, dairy, shellfish, and wheat), insect stings, and medications.

Ulta Lab Tests is a direct-to-consumer healthcare company offering a wide range of lab tests without needing a doctor's referral. Through its online platform, Ulta Lab Tests provides access to over 1,000 tests, including those for fertility, metabolism, and diseases. You can easily order tests online, visit one of many affiliated labs across the country for sample collection, and receive detailed results within a few days. With transparent pricing, a focus on customer education, and a commitment to empowering you to take charge of your health, Ulta Lab Tests aims to make healthcare more accessible and affordable, including allergy testing.
Nearly 400 allergy tests available
One of the biggest reasons Ulta Lab Tests is at the top of our list is the sheer number of allergy tests on offer: almost 400 at the time of our most recent visit. Here are the categories you'll find:
There are far too many for us to list in detail, but suffice it to say that if you've ever wondered "Can I get an allergy test for ‘x'?”, the answer at Ulta Lab Tests is "Yes, absolutely”.
You could save up to 80%
Ulta Lab Tests is significantly less expensive than many allergy testing providers. They negotiate with labs to lower costs by as much as 80% compared to self-pay prices. You might get your allergy tests even cheaper by watching for pop-ups on their site. During our visit, we got a 20% discount by providing our email address, with the code displayed immediately.
Don't be surprised by draw fees of $8.95+
To submit your samples for Ulta Lab Tests, you will visit one of their partner locations, usually Quest Diagnostics. You can find nearby options using the Locations tab; there's typically an $8.95 draw fee, but some locations have a "premium draw fee” and may offer mobile services to collect your sample at home or another location. These fees range from $45 to $100. You'll choose a testing location during checkout and pay these fees in advance.
Results come quickly
After your samples are sent to one of Ulta Lab Tests' national CLIA-certified labs, your results should be available in your online patient portal within 1-3 business days. While your allergy testing doesn't come with a physician consultation, you will be alerted if your results show anything abnormal requiring immediate medical care or if your tests are positive for a communicable disease.
Highly recommended by BBB and repeat customers
Ulta Lab Tests has an excellent reputation. The Better Business Bureau gives the company an "A+” rating, and customers have left numerous 5-star reviews. Many customers return to Ulta Lab Tests because the tests are consistently affordable and the results accurate. Although there aren't specific reviews for allergy tests, we believe the experience will be just as high-quality.
#1 option for on-demand allergy tests
We rank Ulta Lab Tests as our top choice for allergy tests. The site is easy to use, and you can decide which tests to order and where to have your samples collected (even with a mobile phlebotomist, if that would help you feel more at ease). With numerous, affordable allergy tests and quick results, you have the choice of sharing them with your healthcare provider or not. Ulta Lab Tests earns 5 stars for allergy testing and our strongest recommendation.
Walk-In Lab, founded in 2009, helps you manage healthcare costs while keeping an eye on your overall health. With a focus on operational excellence and innovation, Walk-In Lab provides a wide range of lab tests without needing a doctor's referral, and their dedicated customer service is provided by skilled and experienced staff. A standout feature is the secure and private Confidential Lab Record (CLR), which gives you 24-hour access to your test results. This ensures you have peace of mind and complete control over your health information.
Over 250 allergy tests
We hope you've got an idea of what you're looking to test (or that you're really comfortable with using sort/filter tools) because you would spend a lot of time going through all 250+ allergy tests offered by Walk-In Lab. Go into those filters if you know, for example, that you only want to see the environmental allergy tests or if you have a preference between food allergy and food sensitivity testing. It's tough to think of an allergy test that this service doesn't cover; we found everything from cat or dog dander IgE testing ($48 at Labcorp, $58 at Quest) to the Platinum Plus ALCAT Test Kit that tests for 250 food intolerances, 30 food additives/colorings and environmental chemicals, 50 foods and herbs, 20 molds, and 20 antibiotics/anti-inflammatory agents (at a hefty price of $759).
Clear and detailed
When you find the allergy test you need, it's easy to see where you can go for sample collection: most options are available through Quest or Labcorp, with a few through other providers like ALCAT. Walk-In Lab lets you decide, making it clear what you'll pay upfront. You can also see which states may have restrictions, any special preparation instructions, and how long it will take to get your results.
Price matching
Walk-In Lab offers a price-matching perk that many competitors don't. If you find an allergy test for a lower price elsewhere, contact Walk-In Lab before ordering. They'll match the price if the labs are the same (a Labcorp test on both the competitor's site and Walk-In Lab's). We appreciate this commitment to keeping costs down.
Physician-reviewed results
While your allergy test results won't come with a physician consultation by default, they will be reviewed by one of Walk-In Lab's ordering physicians. If anything is marked as "critical” or has an alert, a Results Specialist will notify you.
Excellent reputation
Walk-In Lab has one of the best reputations among allergy test providers on our list, with an "A+" rating from the BBB and numerous positive reviews. It has an impressive average rating of 4.8 stars out of 5 based on nearly 17,000 reviews on one site. On Trustpilot, 88% of reviews are a perfect 5 stars. Customers love the easy access to tests and the low costs, even without insurance. Many reviewers regularly choose Walk-In Lab for routine blood work.
Great choice for allergy testing
Walk-In Lab has a success record that speaks for itself. Thousands of people have used the service for allergy testing and more, and you're guaranteed the lowest price for Quest and Labcorp tests. It's easy to see why we give Walk-In Lab an excellent rating and high recommendation.
HealthLabs has been providing affordable lab testing online since 2015, making it a convenient option for those without insurance or with limited coverage lab tests. It's ideal for individuals who prefer to order tests independently or whose doctors won't order the tests they need. HealthLabs partners with thousands of trusted CLIA-certified labs across the U.S., simplifying the process of ordering common blood and urine tests by providing the necessary prescriptive order for each.
8 categories of allergy tests
While some allergy test providers carry maybe 2-8 individual tests, HealthLabs takes it to a whole different level with 8 categories of allergy testing. See for yourself:
Testing at Quest or Labcorp
To find a convenient testing location, enter your zip code after selecting your allergy test. HealthLabs collaborates with both Quest and Labcorp for sample collection, maintaining a single standard price regardless of the lab used. This straightforward pricing model is a notable advantage over some competitors who charge different rates depending on the lab.
Price matching and fantastic customer support
HealthLabs advertises a 110% price match guarantee, though specific details were not readily apparent on their website. If you see a lower price for an allergy test elsewhere, this guarantee might be a cost-saver, though. You can reach out to HealthLabs via a toll-free number for inquiries about the price guarantee or any other questions before or after your test. If your results require further discussion, you can consult with one of HealthLabs' physicians. Most test results are available within three days, and their Care Advisors are on call every day from 6 AM to 10 PM (CST).
Positive reviews
HealthLabs has a solid reputation, with its parent company, Analyte Health, holding an "A” rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau. The service has also received thousands of 5-star reviews across various platforms. While occasional issues with test processing or customer service do occur, HealthLabs' representatives are generally responsive and helpful. Most patients find the service easy to use and appreciate the fast turnaround for test results.
Excellent choice for allergy testing
We rate HealthLabs very high for allergy testing. Its extensive selection of tests, competitive pricing, and 110% price match guarantee make it a strong contender. With thousands of satisfied customers, HealthLabs is a trustworthy option for your allergy testing needs.
Personalabs, established in 2006, aims to give Americans access to lab testing without the need for a doctor's visit. This includes allergy testing, allowing you to gain insights into potential allergens without the hassle of scheduling a doctor's appointment.
Samples drawn at Labcorp or Quest
All allergy tests through Personalabs require sample collection at either Quest Diagnostics or Labcorp. Some tests allow you to choose which lab to use, while others are restricted to a specific lab. Note that Personalabs does not offer at-home sample collection for allergy testing, so you'll need to visit a lab in person.
Simple process for same-day testing
The process here is straightforward: create a Personalabs account, select your desired allergy tests, and choose your preferred lab. Once you pay for your tests, Personalabs' physician network will approve your order, typically within 2-4 hours, though some approvals may take up to 24 hours. You can then visit the lab at your convenience, and it's usually a good idea to schedule an appointment online through the lab's website. Results are generally available within 24-48 hours.
Telehealth consultations available for a fee
One useful feature offered by Personalabs is the option to schedule a telehealth consultation with one of their board-certified physicians to discuss your allergy testing results. These appointments are conducted online, allowing you to talk to a doctor from home. Check with Personalabs for pricing, but they claim it's often more affordable than an in-person visit with your regular doctor.
More cost-effective than buying direct
Even though Quest and Labcorp offer direct allergy testing, Personalabs often provides these tests at a lower price. This cost-saving aspect makes Personalabs an attractive option for budget-conscious consumers who still want the convenience of visiting a lab they already know and trust. And, we frequently see seasonal promotions with coupon codes featured at the top of the site; at the time of this evaluation, there was an impressive 30% off code up there, valid on all tests sitewide.
Over 50 allergy tests to choose from
Now that we got all of that out of the way, let's take a look at some specifics of what Personalabs offers for allergy testing. There are over 50 to consider, ranging from single-allergen analysis to broad panels of food sensitivities and environmental allergens. Here's a sampler of just some of the options with Personalabs:
Good overall reputation
Personalabs has a solid reputation, reflected in an "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau and numerous positive customer reviews. Most patients report receiving their results as expected, with no issues during the process, though specific feedback on allergy testing is limited.
Some slight customer service issues
But, one small area for improvement is customer service. The live chat feature on the website was not responsive during our visit, with agents unavailable and the link to leave a message leading to a 404 error. This lack of reliable customer support could be frustrating for site visitors needing assistance with picking out the right allergy tests.
Competitive pricing advantage
While Personalabs lacks at-home testing kits, it offers the convenience of using both Quest and Labcorp networks, often at better prices than going directly to the labs. If you can't find what you need with higher-ranked providers, Personalabs is a reliable alternative for your allergy testing needs.
4U Health wants you to be able to "check your health on your own terms”. Offering on-demand at-home lab testing is how they get it done. This provider has an array of tests to choose from, in categories ranging from STDs/STIs to general wellness, all hospital-grade and with no lab visit required.
Subscribe for savings
When you first visit the 4U Health website, you could get a big pop-up inviting you to provide information, subscribe to their newsletter, and get a $25 discount on your first order over $150. You'll be asked for your name and email or mobile number, to indicate whether you're a patient or medical provider, and what you're concerned with at this time (allergies, food sensitivities, adverse responses to medicines).
All tests cover a panel of allergens
You'll easily spend that much here, because all of the tests for allergies and sensitivities analyze your reaction to a whole panel of substances (there's no single-allergen testing offered). Here's the rundown of what 4U Health offers (and, by the way, shipping is included in the pricing, both for the kit's delivery to you and for sending your sample to the lab):
Keep an eye out for offers
But, 4U Health also has frequent promotions that can make your allergy testing less expensive. During our most recent visit to the site, there was a 20% discount automatically applied to all 8 of the tests in the allergy/sensitivity categories. And, if you need it, you can take advantage of Afterpay on any of 4U Health's tests, breaking the cost down into four equal monthly payments.
Includes a telehealth visit
Once you've sent your test kit to 4U Health's labs (which are all CLIA-certified), you can expect to have your results in your patient portal within 2-5 days after the samples have been received. Your allergy test purchase also comes with a telehealth visit to go over your results.
Limited but positive feedback so far
From what we can tell, 4U Health is still pretty new within the at-home allergy testing industry. We didn't find a profile with the Better Business Bureau, and there were only about 175 reviews for the service overall. But, those reviews averaged an impressive 4.7 stars out of 5, and we found one comment from a patient who has happily used 4U Health's tests for over two years. We'd say that this company is off to a good start.
Off to a good start
While we'll need to see a little more feedback come in before we move 4U Health up on our list, we have no problem giving these allergy tests a commendable rating. There are a variety to choose from, and we love that they give our vegan/vegetarian friends a panel specifically for what they eat (without wasting their time and money testing beef and pork). The tests aren't cheap, but all signs point to the results being accurate and useful. We look forward to seeing even more positive things from 4U Health in the future.
Test My Allergy is a service offered by Global Science Technology LTD, a UK-based company providing allergy testing to clients in the US, Australia, and (of course) the UK since 2016.
Offers both hair and blood test sampling
This service offers two main types of allergy testing: sensitivity tests done via hair sample and allergy/intolerance tests via small blood spot sampling. Let's dig a little deeper into your options with Test My Allergy:
Pay attention to shipping details
One cost that isn't factored into those prices is shipping. The sensitivity tests don't have a kit that will be sent to you. Instead, you'll be emailed instructions for how to collect your hair sample and send it to their lab in the UK (at your own expense). The blood spot sample test kits will be shipped to you for free; Test My Allergy doesn't specify if you're also on the hook for the UK shipping to the lab on these. So, keep an eye out at the top of the website for extra savings: during our visit, there was a promo code to save 10%, which could help offset those potential shipping expenses.
Results take a long time
Getting your allergy testing done through this service can take a lot longer than you're expecting. Some clients report that it can take up to a month for the testing kit to arrive. Plus, the samples are sent to the company's lab in the UK, and after they're received it can take up to a month to get your results via email or through the Global Sciences app. That's a lot of waiting for health information you probably want sooner rather than later. Helpful hint, though: be sure to check your spam/junk inbox; many reviews mentioned that they missed communications from Test My Allergy that accidentally went there.
Two-thirds of clients give it 5 stars
Speaking of client feedback, Test My Allergy has mixed results but they're positive overall. For example, Trustpilot reviews spanning nearly 500 ratings average out to 4.2 stars, with 66% giving the company a perfect 5-star score and 27% offering the lowest possible rating. Most of the complaints come from those who had been waiting a long time for their kits and came to rant about the delay; once those tests arrived (or when they realized that the instructions had come digitally and they missed the email), most people were happy with the customer service and the testing process in general.
Good enough if you can handle waiting for results
We rate Test My Allergy as slightly above average. It's not great that US-based customers will have to ship samples overseas and wait a long time for their results to come back. However, from what we've seen in customer comments, these allergy and sensitivity tests can give you some helpful insights into what might be causing your gastrointestinal issues, inflammation, or other reactions (once you finally get your results, anyway). Check out the higher-ranked options on our list if you're in a hurry, but otherwise Test My Allergy is a solid choice overall.
Since 2015, Everlywell has been dedicated to empowering consumers by providing easy access to a diverse range of lab tests. These tests, which do not require a doctor's order, can be purchased at your convenience. Everlywell has been recognized by major publications such as Bloomberg, Cosmopolitan, Forbes, NYT, Fast Company, and Time, making it a well-established player in the healthcare industry.
5 allergy/sensitivity tests on offer
There are five finger prick tests at Everlywell that we would classify as allergy-related. You'll have to dig around a bit in the shop to find them, but here's what you'll turn up:
Easy to use
Your test kit will ship for free and it comes with easy-to-follow instructions, including using the provided QR code to register the kit. You'll need to do that to get your results, which should be ready for you in a few days. Your allergy test kit will be sent to a CLIA-certified lab, where a board-certified physician will review the results. For added transparency, you can view the credentials of all Everlywell's partner doctors on their website.
Discount opportunities
Everlywell's allergy tests are competitively priced for what you get in each panel. However, you can save some money through their "spin to win” discount offer. By entering your email address, you can potentially get free shipping (though this seems standard for most orders), a 10% discount, or save $5 to $10 on your first purchase. While it might seem unusual for a medical test provider to have such a promotion, every bit of savings helps.
Great overall ratings on most allergy tests
The allergy tests at Everlywell are quite popular: some of the tests have thousands of reviews, usually averaging at least 4.2 stars out of 5. Users described the instructions as easy to follow and said that the results helped them decide on the appropriate next steps for their healthcare. We found some complaints from people with known food sensitivities/allergies who didn't get the same results when testing with Everlywell; they felt like they'd wasted hundreds of dollars on a test that was wildly inaccurate. However, the vast majority of people who've taken Everlywell's allergy tests are happy with the experience and recommend them to others.
Mixed overall reputation
Despite Everlywell's specific allergy tests receiving positive reviews, the company's overall reputation is mixed. The Better Business Bureau gives Everlywell an "A+” rating, but customer feedback on platforms like Trustpilot is less favorable. Common complaints include unwanted memberships, receiving tests that weren't ordered (and being charged for them), and issues with test processing and result accuracy. Many of these issues have led to average customer ratings below 2 stars across various review sites.
Some room for improvement
While Everlywell looks like a good option for allergy tests, we're not 100% confident that the results you'll get here are going to be on time and accurate. But, you'll get a lot for what you pay in terms of what's tested, and there are thousands of high reviews. We give Everlywell's allergy tests a cautious-yet-optimistic rating.
Quest Diagnostics is a prominent provider of diagnostic information services, well-known for its extensive range of laboratory tests and diagnostic solutions. Established in 1967, Quest has grown into one of the most visible names in medical testing, with services that include routine blood work, advanced genetic testing, and specialized diagnostics across numerous medical fields, including allergy testing.
15 allergy tests on offer
When you purchase your allergy testing directly from Quest, you have just over a dozen options. These include:
Blood draws at the lab or at home
Quest's allergy tests can be done through a blood draw at one of their 6,000+ locations nationwide. One convenient feature is mobile collection. If the service is available in your area, you can pay a $55 fee to have a phlebotomist come to your home and take your blood sample. This can be a huge time-saver and makes the process much more convenient for you.
Comes with a free physician consultation
Once you submit your samples, you can expect to see your results on the Quest patient portal within five business days. If any results are outside the normal range, you might receive an alert from an independent healthcare coordinator through PWNHealth. A physician consultation is included with your test purchase, ensuring you have professional guidance to interpret your allergy testing results. Even if your results are normal, you're encouraged to discuss them with your personal physician as well.
Competitive pricing and promotions
Quest's pricing is competitive, and they often run promotions that can help reduce costs. This is especially true during peak allergy seasons. However, it's wise to compare prices with other providers, as some use Quest's facilities and may offer lower costs for similar tests.
No reviews on individual allergy tests
One drawback with Quest is the lack of a platform for customer reviews on their website. While this might be due to privacy concerns, other sites manage to allow semi-anonymous feedback, which could be beneficial for prospective customers deciding which allergy test is right for them or wondering how accurate/helpful the results are.
Reputation problems
Quest's reputation has taken a hit in some areas. The Better Business Bureau gives them an "F” rating, and there are alerts about potential data leaks. On Trustpilot, they average only 1.6 stars out of 5, with complaints about poor customer service, inconsistent results, and overall stressful experiences.
Not the best option for allergy tests
Quest can be a viable option for allergy testing if you have no other alternatives or need a specific test that other providers don't offer. However, be prepared for a potentially less-than-ideal experience.
myLAB Box has been around since 2014, offering a wide range of at-home tests, including allergy testing, without requiring a lab visit. You might have noticed some of their test kits at your local grocery store or pharmacy, but their most comprehensive selection is available on their online store.
2 panels for testing allergies/sensitivities
myLAB Box offers just two allergy-related tests:
Free shipping over $150
All myLAB Box allergy tests can be purchased using HSA/FSA funds, with free shipping on orders over $150. Delivery costs are displayed at checkout for smaller orders.
Results in 2-5 days
Once you've received your kit and done the finger prick sample collection, you'll send those samples to myLAB Box's partner labs, all of which are CAP- and CLIA-certified. You can expect results from these allergy tests within 2-5 days of sample receipt.
Transparency isn't a hallmark of this company
We wish myLAB Box was more transparent about where the samples are processed and the name/location of the lab(s). The only clue is a mention that positive results for certain tests (*cough* STI/STDs *cough*) must be reported to the FL State Department of Health, suggesting the lab is in that state. Furthermore, myLAB Box doesn't offer physician consultations for results; you'll need to take your allergy test results to your own doctor.
Customers are unhappy
In addition to the lack of transparency, myLAB Box struggles with customer satisfaction. The Better Business Bureau rates them poorly, with an "F” grade reflecting an average of 1 star out of 5 from reviews. Common complaints include missing results, delayed kit deliveries, and unresponsive customer service.
Below average for allergy testing
While the convenience of at-home allergy testing is appealing, we have significant concerns about myLAB Box. We give it a "below average” rating in part due to these issues. And, since there are only two allergy tests on offer here, we recommend looking at higher-rated competitors who offer more robust choices and excellent customer service too.
Labcorp on Demand provides convenient a la carte testing solutions as a well-known leader in diagnostic services. They offer a wide variety of tests, including wellness, COVID-19, and allergy assessments. You can easily order tests online, visit a nearby Labcorp location, and access your results through a secure online portal.
Just 4 allergy tests offered
Despite the number of providers on our list who refer patients to Labcorp for the blood sample collection on dozens of allergy tests, Labcorp itself only offers four:
We were pretty underwhelmed by what each test covered, compared with rivals' tests that include several dozen to 100+ allergens in each analysis.
Pricey compared to other options
Did you notice that there isn't a comprehensive package here that covers food and environmental allergies in one go? You'll likely need to order several tests to get a full picture, which can add up quickly in costs. Additionally, many of these tests are more affordable on competitor sites. However, you can use HSA/FSA funds to help manage the expense here.
All tests must be performed at Labcorp locations
One downside is that Labcorp requires all allergy sample collections to be done at one of their numerous lab locations. Unlike some services that allow for at-home testing kits, you'll need to visit a Labcorp facility to provide your sample, which might not be as convenient as other at-home options.
Results can take up to 2 weeks
Despite the ease of ordering tests, the turnaround time for results can be longer than anticipated. Even though it's advertised that results will be ready in 2-5 days, customer comments indicate that it can take about 7-14 days to get your results after your sample reaches the lab. This means you might be waiting longer than expected to find out what's causing your allergies. The results will be available in your Labcorp patient account, and you'll be notified by phone or mail if there are urgent findings.
No included physician consultation
Labcorp on Demand does not include physician consultations with their allergy testing services. After receiving your results, you'll need to consult with your own doctor to interpret and discuss the findings. This is a notable drawback compared to other services that provide consultations as part of the testing package.
Mixed reputation with numerous complaints
Labcorp's overall reputation is mixed, with over 500 complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau in the last three years, earning them a "C-” rating. Customer reviews average just 1.3 stars out of 5, with many complaints about billing issues, which may also affect your experience with their allergy testing services.
Last place for allergy tests
Overall, Labcorp on Demand is not the most compelling choice for allergy testing. Their limited test options, higher prices, and lengthy result times make it hard to recommend them over other providers on our list.
There are different methods for testing, which can include skin prick tests that introduce small amounts of allergens into your skin to observe for reactions, blood tests that measure the presence of specific antibodies to allergens, and patch tests that apply allergens to your skin to check for delayed reactions.
If you're considering on-demand allergy testing, online providers offer a convenient option. These range from comprehensive tests that cover dozens of potential allergens to more specific tests focusing on particular types like food or environmental triggers. This option is perfect if you value privacy, convenience, and the ability to manage your health from home. You can order a test kit online, collect a sample at home (usually a blood sample or hair) or visit a partner lab near you, and then it's sent to the lab for analysis. Results are then provided online, often with options for follow-up consultations.
