The Best Amish Furniture Stores

Where is the Best Place to Buy Amish Furniture?

When people hear the term "Amish furniture" they will often go to great lengths, spend more money, and wait a long time to have something made for them. This unique and specific type of furniture first gained attention in the 1920's when American folk art was becoming popular.

The Amish people in Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania are typically the ones who make these sought-after pieces. Luckily you don't have to travel around the United States or find a specialty store in order to get your hands on them, but rather you can shop online and have something made and delivered direct to your home.

Online Amish Furniture

Top Consumer Reviews Best-In-Class Blue Ribbon Award

Online Amish Furniture ships their furniture to all of the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and many countries in Europe. The company was started in 1998 as a brick-and-mortar store and in 2006, Online Amish Furniture went exclusively online. Their goal is to provide long-lasting pieces to families looking for an alternative to disposable furniture.

Website Could Use An Update

You won't find the prettiest website when you navigate your way around Online Amish Furniture's store. It also loads quite slowly on some pages. However, this doesn't seem to have any reflection on their quality or customer satisfaction. It's still easy enough to find what you're looking for. The inventory here doesn't include as many modern-looking pieces as some other online Amish retailers, but if you're shopping for the sturdy classics, this is your place.

Sitewide Discounts

Online Amish Furniture offers sitewide discounts depending on the total cost of your order. The breakdown is as follows:

  • $1,000 - $2,999: 2% off
  • $3,000 - $4,999: 4% off
  • $5,000 - $9,999: 6% off
  • $10,000+: 10% off
Best Amish Furniture Companies

Shipping $199

You'll periodically find additional onsite discounts to give you an even better deal. At the time of this review, an extra 5% off of purchases of $2,000 or more was offered. Delivery costs for furniture are a fixed rate of $199. If you want white glove delivery where the packages are brought into your home and assembled, the cost is $349.

Each Piece Custom Made

The timeframe in which customers will receive orders after they are purchased ranges from 10-16 weeks. Some larger items like dressers, chests of drawers, and hutches might take 12-16 weeks. Once orders are placed, Amish craftsmen in Ohio and/or Pennsylvania begin working on your product, so this explains the longer-than-typical wait period for delivery.

Generous Return Policy

When you place an order with Online Amish Furniture, you have 72 hours to cancel it for a full refund or make any changes. Once that window has passed and you receive your products, you have one year to contact customer service and return your furniture. You'll need to pay the full cost of shipping your items back as well as a 25% restocking fee. This is an extremely generous return policy that we haven't seen anywhere else.

Highest Rating

The Better Business Bureau gives Online Amish Furniture an A+ rating and plenty of customers have left positive reviews online. We wish that Online Amish Furniture had a larger variety of furniture, but if this company has products that fit your taste, it is a terrific place for your purchase. They earn our highest rating.

DutchCrafters Review 4.5 Star Rating

DutchCrafters

4.5 Star Rating
  • Return Policy: No returns.

DutchCrafters has been selling Amish furniture online for over 17 years. The company was founded by a man named Jim Miller, a Mennonite from Indiana and Michigan. Miller started DutchCrafters as a way to promote products that represented his heritage and add authentic products to the furniture market. Their heirloom-quality pieces are primarily sourced from Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. They sell and ship their furniture throughout the contiguous United States.

Huge Inventory

DutchCrafters has one of the biggest inventories of Amish furniture we have found. They blow many of the competitors out of the water as far as selection goes. In addition to the standard pieces you think of when shopping for furniture like dining room tables, headboards, or desks, DutchCrafters sells things like play kitchens and rocking horses for kids, game tables, dog beds, calendar frames, bed steps, coat hooks, and more. DutchCrafters fits the bill of an online store that sells things you didn't even know you needed!

Fair Prices

Like all Amish furniture stores, the prices for pieces here are a little higher than what you might be used to, if you typically buy flimsier, mass-produced furniture. DutchCrafters' prices are very reasonable for the industry and sometimes even seem to be a little cheaper. Some customers have said after doing a lot of research for the furniture they wanted, they found the best deal at DutchCrafters. Each product description comes with plenty of details and specifications and even tells you in which location your piece of furniture will be made.

Long Delivery

Once furniture is purchased, it takes anywhere from 6-16 weeks to be made and then an additional 2-3 weeks for delivery. Once your order is ready, you'll receive an email confirmation with delivery details. The company delivering your furniture will also reach out to go over the delivery process and schedule a time to drop off your items.

Best Amish Furniture Companies

Returns Accepted

If you're unhappy with your order after receiving it and want to send it back, you have up to 10 days to inform DutchCrafters. Since each furniture piece is custom made, there is a 15% restocking fee. The original delivery charges are not refundable, and you must pay the return shipping charges.

Shipping $249

DutchCrafters charges a $249 flat-rate shipping fee for most of the products they sell. This is one of the most expensive delivery costs we have seen among Amish furniture retailers. If you want white glove inside delivery service (drivers unload your items, unpackage them, take them to the correct rooms, and perform light assembly) this will cost an additional $150.

Mostly Postive Reviews

DutchCrafters receives good reviews from customers. For people who aren't used to spending thousands of dollars on furniture, many of them reported that they felt the investment was well worth it here. Some were unhappy with how their stain turned out, the upholstery on furniture, or the delivery times. However, most of the negative feedback could be attributed to customers not doing their due diligence to research how processes work when buying from Amish retailers or not ordering stain samples ahead of time.

One Of The Best

Overall, DutchCrafters is a great place to buy from. We are especially impressed with their huge selection of inventory and pricing. We strongly recommend that you take a look at DutchCrafters for your next Amish Furniture purchase.

Amish Furniture Factory Review 4.5 Star Rating

Amish Furniture Factory

4.5 Star Rating
  • Return Policy: Refunds can be given, minus a 15% restocking fee and shipping costs, within 30 days of delivery

Amish Furniture Factory sells genuine Amish furniture to customers across the United States. Although their website is not as appealing as some competitors', they have a big selection of furniture and it is easy to find what you're looking for. The turnaround time for products bought from Amish Furniture Factory is typically 8-12 weeks because 95% of their product line is not actually in-stock and has to be hand-crafted after an order is placed.

Search By Room

You can narrow down the products at Amish Furniture Factory by the area of the house you're shopping for. These include:

  • Baby Room
  • Bedroom
  • Dining Room
  • Entertainment & TV
  • Kid's Play Room
  • Kitchen & Bar
  • Lawn, Garden, & Patio
  • Living Room
  • Miscellaneous
  • Office
  • Rustic Cabin & Lodge

Volume Discounts

Volume discounts are available from 2% - 14% on purchases. Starting at $1,000, for every additional thousand dollars you spend, an extra percent is taken off of your purchase. For orders of $1,000 or more, you'll need to put down a 30% deposit to get your furniture started. From there you'll have three more months before delivery to pay off the remaining balance. Most products are $700 and above - you should expect to pay at least a thousand dollars or more on most pieces found here.

Free Stain And Finish Samples

Sometimes it can be hard to know exactly what stain color would match your space just based on an online photo. Different lighting can skew the way something looks on your computer. Luckily Amish Furniture Factory will send you free stain and finish samples in the mail if you request them. We highly recommend doing this so that you can make sure you order exactly what you want the first time around and see how different colors look with your flooring, walls, and other furniture in the room. If you don't request samples and end up wanting to send your furniture back because it doesn't match like you'd hoped, you'll be denied a refund.

Best Amish Furniture Companies

Return Policy

If you're unsatisfied with your order for any other reason, you are able to return it for a refund within 30 days of delivery. You will still have to pay to ship the furniture both ways and pay a 15% restocking fee. The exception is if your items come broken or defective. In this case, you get a full refund without having to pay the restocking fee. Customers who place an order have 72 hours to cancel their order free of charge.

Shipping Costs Vary

Shipping costs vary based on the products ordered. Rates are calculated based on the approximate size and weight of the items and the shipping destination. These are calculated in the shopping cart online after you've provided your zip code.

High Customer Satisfaction

Testimonials from satisfied customers can be viewed on the Amish Furniture Factory website. Often we are skeptical of reviews directly from a website because they may highlight only positive feedback and get filtered. However, many of the reviews here contain customers' photographs of the furniture they purchased. These show how high quality each piece is. The Better Business Bureau gives Amish Furniture Factory an A+ rating, and feedback from third-party sites gives more credibility to the fact that people really like buying from this retailer.

Solid Choice

We are impressed with the selection at Amish Furniture Factory as well as the number of satisfied customers who have made purchases here. Since you can order free color samples and get all of the information you need before you order, we are confident that you'll be happy with anything you purchase from their online store. Amish Furniture Factory has earned one of our top ratings for Amish furniture.

Amish Showroom Review 4 Star Rating

Amish Showroom

4 Star Rating
  • Return Policy: No returns

Amish Showroom is based out of Minnesota. They work directly with a small Amish woodworking shop that builds orders on demand. The process of ordering, shipping, and delivery usually takes 4-12 weeks depending on the item. Amish Showroom has an "in-stock" section of their website with a variety of products that are ready to ship or pick up, but unfortunately they are only available for Minneapolis/St. Paul local delivery or in-store pickup.

Ton Of Variety

There is a ton of variety in the products carried by Amish Showroom. For example, if you're looking for a dining room table, you can choose from styles that include trestle, leg, pedestal, tall gathering, narrow, breadboard, long expanding, live edge, and breakfast nooks. With every category of furniture, there is a fairly long list of even more specific pieces to choose from. Categories include:

  • Sale Items
  • Dining Room
  • Living Room
  • Bedroom
  • Office
  • Vanities
  • Entryway

Stain Sample

To make sure you order exactly what you want from Amish Showroom, they recommend giving them a call to go over stain choices and any other details relevant to the purchase. After you place your order, they will send a stain sample for your review. This helps guarantee that you order the right stain and match it with surrounding room colors to your satisfaction.

Best Amish Furniture Companies

Competitive Pricing

There is a 50% non-refundable deposit due at the time of order. The remaining amount is due at the time your order is delivered. Prices here are comparable to other Amish furniture stores. You'll pay at least $1,000 for almost any given product, but could easily spend a few thousand dollars on multi-piece products. They have a sale page, but at the time of this review, there were only 5 total products listed there. In other words, you probably won't score a great deal this way.

No Refund Policy

Before ordering from Amish Showroom, keep in mind there is no refund policy. They make it clear that grain patterns vary with each product and it's part of the beauty of the furniture. They can never be sure exactly how the stain and wood grain will turn out, so they don't allow returns based on the understanding that each piece of furniture is unique.

Check It Out

The Better Business Bureau gives Amish Showroom an A+ rating. Unfiltered customer reviews found in various places online give 5-star ratings nearly across the board. The huge assortment of furniture here makes Amish Showroom a no-brainer when it comes to browsing different styles for ideas. Their no-return policy might make some customers shy away from buying anything here, but other than that we recommend checking out the beautiful pieces found at Amish Showroom.

Countryside Amish Furniture Review 4 Star Rating

Countryside Amish Furniture

4 Star Rating
  • Return Policy: No returns

The real-wood furniture sold by Countryside Amish Furniture is primarily manufactured in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. All of their pieces are sealed with a conversion varnish that helps protect against everyday wear and tear. They feel strongly that each piece of furniture they sell is not just a "look or style", but rather a piece of art.

Types Of Furniture

The specific types of furniture that you can select at Countryside Amish Furniture include:

  • Arts and Crafts
  • Traditional
  • Farmhouse
  • Mid Century
  • Mission
  • Shaker
  • Queen Anne
  • Walnut
  • Contemporary
  • French Country
  • Cherry Wood

Outdoor Products Too

In addition to indoor furniture for your dining room, bedroom, office, living room, and kid's room, Countryside Amish Furniture has a huge selection of outdoor products as well. These include patio swings, lounge seating, patio benches, rockers, and more.

To make sure you get the perfect match for your home, you can order samples of stains, fabrics, leathers, outdoor fabrics, and poly colors.

Best Amish Furniture Companies

Shipping $150

The cost for delivery and set up anywhere in the United States is $150. A few customers that have bought smaller pieces from Countryside Amish Furniture have complained about that: if you're ordering huge bedroom sets, you should be paying more for shipping than if you order a small side table or chest. Some have felt that the delivery fee was extremely high for the products they ordered.

Reasonable Pricing

Pricing at Countryside Amish Furniture is reasonable for the quality and is comparable to other Amish furniture stores. If you spend $2,000, you get 5% off your total purchase. If you spend $5,000, you get 8% off and if you spend $8,000 you get 10% off. That's a good chunk of change to spend regardless of the discount, but it might help customers who have had their eye on some expensive pieces. Since every item is made-to-order at Countryside Amish Furniture, they do not accept returns.

Enviromentally Sustainable

We really like the focus on sustainability at this store. They are environmentally friendly and make sure all the hardwoods used to create furniture are responsibly harvested and domestically grown. Since everything is made of pure wood, it should be able to last a lifetime. Surprisingly, however, some customers have complained that their pieces started to break apart within a few months or years and that they had difficulty working with customer service to resolve the issues.

Worth A Look

Countryside Amish Furniture has many pieces to choose from. We like that there is a wide variety of styles and specific products within each category. It's interesting to browse their many unique outdoor furniture pieces as well. Their no-return policy is understandable, but may be an issue for some customers who are leery of spending so much money on furniture. The $150 flat-rate delivery and set-up fee might also be a turn-off for anyone looking to make a smaller purchase here. Aside from those two things Countryside Amish Furniture has a great selection, so you may want to browse their inventory - particularly if you're looking for a hard-to-find piece you can't get elsewhere.

Pinecraft Review 4 Star Rating

Pinecraft

4 Star Rating
  • Return Policy: No return time frame specified, but a 15% restocking fee applies

Pinecraft sells Amish furniture that is crafted in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Montana. They are named after their local Amish community, Pinecraft, in the Sarasota, Florida area. Pinecraft receives an A- rating from the Better Business Bureau and customers overall have good things to say about their quality, customer service, and online ordering process.

Outdoor Furniture Highlighted

Pinecraft sells both indoor and outdoor furniture, but their outdoor furniture is highlighted when you arrive at the site. Right away we saw amazing Amish chicken coops that looked so nice a human could live in one, dreamy playground equipment, princess castles, and big playhouses with slides. If you want the coolest yard in town, this is the place to shop.

Amish Furniture Categories

In addition to outdoor furniture they also sell decor, gardening products, and storage items. Other categories of Amish furniture available at Pinecraft include:

  • Patio Sets
  • Porch Swings and Stands
  • Patio Benches
  • Patio Tables
  • Patio Chairs
  • Bedroom Furniture
  • Kitchen & Dining Furniture
  • Living Room Furniture
  • Office Furniture
  • Outdoor Playtime
  • Toys
  • Animal Supplies
Best Amish Furniture Companies

Indoor Furntiure Selection Lacking

We noticed that their indoor furniture selection is somewhat lacking. For example, they don't sell indoor dining tables here, which is a bit odd. They sell office chairs, but not desks. Their focus is definitely on outdoor furniture, which is great, but if you're in the market to furnish the inside of your house, you might have to look elsewhere for certain items.

Get That Discount

If you sign up for Pinecraft's email list, you'll receive 10% off your next order. This is definitely worth doing since that could save you a couple hundred dollars if you're buying something big! Pinecraft says all orders are final, but if you choose to ship your products back, you'll be charged a 15% delivery fee. They don't give a timeframe for returns, so we recommend contacting customer service about your particular order.

Free Shipping

We did a double take when we read that orders over $199 ship free from Pinecraft. This is quite the deal considering many other Amish furniture stores charge a few hundred dollars for each piece they deliver. The only exceptions might be for large structures like barns, sheds, playhouses, coops, etc. Most orders will likely qualify for free shipping though, since many of the products cost at least a few hundred dollars.

Fun Place To Shop

Overall, Pinecraft is a really fun place to look for Amish furniture. We especially recommend shopping here if you want outdoor furniture of any kind. They have a great selection of really unique products, and we are impressed with their low shipping fee and reasonable prices. They are lacking in the indoor furniture arena, so they aren't our first pick for those types of products, but for all other Amish furniture purchases, Pinecraft is a fantastic place to shop.

Simply Amish Review 2.5 Star Rating

Simply Amish

2.5 Star Rating
  • Return Policy: Case-by-case basis

Simply Amish was founded in 1979 by a father and his sons who learned furniture construction together on their family farm. Here you can browse over 50 collections of furniture, shop by room, view live edge pieces, and buy the finishing touches for your products. You can even style your own furniture online by specifying size, shape, wood, stain, height, edges, and more.

No Option To Buy

Simply Amish has plenty of products to view on their website. However, that's just the problem: the pieces are only available for viewing and not for actually buying online. Each product description gives dimensions, construction information, stain options, and more, but there is no pricing or option to purchase the pieces. In order to buy furniture, you can input your zip code and get directions to a dealer nearest you that sells Simply Amish furniture. Unfortunately, not everyone will have locations close by, so this will really limit who will find this site useful.

Contact A Dealer

If you do have a dealer nearby, you will need to contact them about pieces you're interested in and see if they can order in anything for you that they don't already stock. The time it takes to request a piece of furniture and pick it up is about 8-10 weeks. Depending on delivery routes, it may take an additional 2-3 weeks on top of that for the products to arrive.

Best Amish Furniture Companies

Case-by-case Returns

If you buy furniture from Simply Amish, keep in mind they don't have a black and white return policy. Everything is considered on a case-by-case basis. To request a refund, a phone number and email address are provided on the website. However, they do have a lifetime guarantee on their products, which means if their furniture fails during normal household use in the lifetime of the original owner, they will either repair it or replace it at no charge.

Unrated With The BBB

The Better Business Bureau has Simply Amish listed as non-accredited and unrated. There are hardly any reviews to be found about this company online. You'll likely have to delve into details about the dealer nearest you if you are really interested in their reputation and the quality of pieces listed on this site.

Disappointing

We are mostly disappointed that you can't buy directly online from this retailer because it makes purchasing Amish furniture much more complicated. There are plenty of online-exclusive retailers that provide Amish furniture, so it would be easiest to shop there instead.

Amish Furniture Collection Review 2 Star Rating

Amish Furniture Collection

2 Star Rating
  • Return Policy: Unspecified

Amish Furniture Collection screams class. Their website is professional and provides pictures of all their pieces, making it obvious that everything they sell would fit in either a modern or traditional home. Furniture is picked up directly from the Amish in Ohio and Indiana in an effort to keep costs lower for customers.

Out Of Luck If You're Not In Michigan

One big downside with Amish Furniture Collection is that they only serve Southeast Michigan. This is disappointing since we really like what is offered here. If you live in the Michigan area, we highly recommend checking out their website or showroom. For everyone else, you're out of luck and will have to look elsewhere for Amish Furniture.

In Stock Or Custom Order

For local shoppers, there are two ways to buy items from Amish Furniture Collection. The first way is to order what is already made and ready to ship from their storeroom. This is the fastest way to get the products you want. The other option is to find something you like on their website or in-store and request the stain color, wood type, dimensions, and so on to customize the piece to exactly what you have in mind. The standard wait time for this process is about 12 weeks: you'll get something unique to your style, but you'll have to be patient while it's being built.

Best Amish Furniture Companies

Can't Purchase Online Or See Pricing

Customers can view photos of what's available at Amish Furniture Collection, but they can't actually purchase anything online or see pricing. For specific details about cost, delivery times, what's in-stock, or customization, a phone number, address, and contact form are available to reach out to customer service.

Few Styles To Choose From

There are few styles of furniture available at Amish Furniture Collection. If you're looking for a kitchen table, they come in circles, squares, rectangles, and a small variety of leg types and styles. Mostly they carry staple pieces of furniture that have enough variety to fit different tastes, but most competitors have more to choose from. You can change the colors and wood types if you want, so that does add a handful of additional options.

No Return Policy Listed

If you end up purchasing something from Amish Furniture Collection, you'll have to ask what the return policy is. This may be dependent on whether or not the piece was customized. There is no return policy listed on their website since it isn't actually built for sales.

Better Luick Elsewhere

Amish Furniture Collection undoubtedly has high-quality pieces for sale. Whether you're looking to furnish your kitchen, bedroom, office, living room, or another space, they have all the essentials. Customers who have shopped at their store in Michigan have great things to say about the products and the buying process. They've earned a lower rating from us because their Michigan-only service area is limiting and there is no online sales process. Because many people won't be able to get anything here, you may want to try shopping at one of the higher-rated Amish furniture stores we evaluated.

Compare the Best Reviews

Continued from above...

Amish furniture has become popular due to its high quality, excellent craftsmanship, and traditional style. There are many retailers that sell furniture, but they are often made with particle board or laminate, which tend to break more easily and support less weight. Amish furniture is typically made completely out of wood, hand-selected to fit each furniture piece. The durability of Amish furniture allows it to be used for generations.

Another reason to love Amish furniture is that they are considered "green products". The making of the furniture is a sustainable practice since the tools used are often powered by hydraulic and pneumatic power from diesel compressors. Since Amish beliefs discourage the use of electricity, they use alternative resources to make furniture. The Amish are known for never taking shortcuts to save time or money and they take great pride in their process of furniture making.

When purchasing Amish furniture online, we suggest you keep the following criteria in mind:

  • Cost. Remember that Amish furniture is higher-quality than you'll find in a lot of places - and priced accordingly. However, when comparing prices between retailers, pay attention to how a piece is made and how it measures up against the competition.
  • Return Policy. If the furniture doesn't fit in your space, like you'd hoped, or it happens to break in shipping, are you able to send it back for a refund or exchange?
  • Selection. When buying furniture, you often have a particular color or style in mind. Finding a store with a big selection will help ensure you're able to purchase something you really like.

TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked a variety of Amish furniture retailers. We hope this information helps you find the pieces that will suit your style and needs for years to come!

Amish Furniture Store FAQ

The Amish are a Christian group in North America whose roots go back to the late 17th century. Their church is a branch off of the Mennonite faith. Today, the largest groups of Amish people are mainly found in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas. They believe in separating themselves from the world by wearing plain clothing, being slow to accept new technologies, and using bicycles or horse-and-buggies as their main source of transportation. The Amish are known for being excellent farmers, constructing their own tools, and being hard workers.
The level of craftsmanship that goes into Amish furniture is of higher quality than what you would find at a store that sells mass-manufactured items. Rather than lasting a few years, Amish furniture is such high quality that it can be passed down for generations and still look brand new if well cared for. Each item is handmade by an Amish woodworker, often on their own land. Amish furniture businesses are almost always family-owned and operated.
The Amish reject most modern machinery that requires operation by electricity. When making furniture, they often use handmade tools and alternative power sources like hydraulic pumps, propane gas, or compressed air. They make all their furniture by hand with real wood (i.e. no particle board or laminate), which is why it can take months for an order to be completed. It is not uncommon to see furniture made without nails, but rather using advanced joinery techniques that can last for generations.
Yes! When you're browsing Amish furniture online, you'll find that for any given piece you're interested in, you can usually pick the color of wood and sometimes add other details or engravings. Each piece of Amish furniture is made just for the buyer and no one else. Because of this, no two pieces are exactly alike and you get to request all of your specifications before the product is constructed.
You can get just about any type of furniture you want from an online Amish retailer. You'll find all the basics like bedroom sets, rocking chairs, tables, dining chairs, desks, and more. Some retailers also sell porch swings, outdoor playgrounds, patio sets, and office furniture. If you're wanting a timeless, long-lasting piece of furniture for any space in your house, you'll be able to find it Amish-made.
Amish furniture is always more expensive than mass-produced furniture because every piece is made of solid wood and crafted by hand. The quality of your furniture will far exceed anything you'll find elsewhere, making it well worth the cost. The price of any given item depends on the item and from what type of wood it is made. When shopping for Amish furniture, you can expect to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars for any given piece.
If you have an Amish community near you in the northern United States, you might be able to visit a showroom to get an idea of the quality and designs available. Some Amish retailers even work with other home furnishing stores throughout the US and supply them with some staple furniture products. However, most of the time when buying Amish furniture, you shop online: select the construction materials you want and any other customizable features and have it built for you. This is the most convenient and personalized way to buy Amish furniture.
Depending on the retailer, Amish furniture is sometimes returnable as long as it is not custom. Some retailers have a 25%+ restocking fee for anything returned, while others don't allow returns at all. Amish furniture is well-made piece-by-piece, so you won't need to worry about quality as much as you would if you were buying furniture from a traditional retailer. Because the pieces are typically made exactly to your specifications, most of the time there would be no need for returns. Read the return policy listed by the Amish furniture store you choose to buy from before placing an order so you know what to expect.

Why is Amish Furniture So Popular?

As you prepare to buy new furnishings for your home, you undoubtedly will come across many Amish-style pieces for the bedroom, living room and other areas of the house. These include hardwood options like dining tables, chairs, end tables, bookshelves, desks, dressers and more. With so many types of Amish furniture available in local stores and online, you can see that Amish furnishings are a popular option. By taking a closer look at why Amish furniture continues to be highly coveted in homes across the country and beyond, you may decide that these are pieces that are perfect for your home.

Premium Materials

Many wood furnishings available in local stores and online today are not actually made out of hardwood. Instead, they are made out of manufactured materials that could include a combination of veneer, fiberboard, particleboard and even plywood. Wood is generally a durable material that can last a lifetime, but this is not the case for the many types of manufactured wood materials. In fact, furnishings made out of these manufactured wood materials may only last a decade or less before they begin to fall apart. Unlike hardwood, the manufactured wood cannot be refinished. As a result, it generally is tossed in the trash when it falls apart.

Amish furnishings are exclusively made out of true hardwoods. Solid red oak and cherry wood are commonly used. Other types of solid wood used in Amish furnishings are hickory, walnut, maple, and white oak. The wood is produced in a sustainable fashion. Because the trees usually grow in a northern climate where the rate of growth is slow, the wood is dense and durable. As a result, Amish furnishings are durable. In fact, they can easily last a lifetime or much longer.

More than that, these are American-made items that are often not created until an order has been placed. Many other furnishings may be assembled on the other side of an ocean. The manufacturing processes can generate unnecessary waste, and shipping may lead to the unnecessary consumption of fossil fuels and the generation of pollutants. Because Amish furniture may not be produced until it is ordered, there is no need for the Amish to maintain a large warehouse. The Amish are able to optimize valuable space strategically.

Handcrafted Quality

The Amish people are known for living simple lives without modern luxuries like electricity. Most of the furnishings that you will find for sale online and in local stores are mass-produced pieces that are quickly made. The manufacturing processes may yield defects, and they can result in weaker and less durable furnishings. The Amish, however, make all of their pieces by hand using many of the same carpentry tools and joinery methods that have been used for generations. While some Amish craftsmen use select power tools for specific tasks, they never mass-produce their work.

One of the unique qualities of Amish furnishings is their lack of nails. Instead, the Amish use various traditional joinery methods that require exceptional craftsmanship. They also utilize non-toxic wood adhesives to ensure the longevity of their artisan furniture.

Low-Maintenance Furnishings

One of the many endearing qualities of Amish furniture is that they require minimal maintenance. Because of the intensive manufacturing processes and the lower-grade materials used in many other types of furnishings, special care may be required to optimize their longevity. However, even with detailed care and frequent attention, the mass-produced furnishings may have a much shorter life.

Because Amish furniture is exclusively made using high-quality hardwood material with handcrafted assembly, it does not have special care requirements. While all furniture needs to be dusted frequently, Amish furniture requires infrequent additional steps to keep it looking great. In fact, polishing it every six months is the only specialized care that may be needed. Because solid hardwood is used, you can expect the material to resist nicks and scratches that may plague soft wood and manufactured wood furnishings. When Amish furniture finally shows signs of age and wear, it can be sanded and refinished to give it a like-new appearance. However, when Amish furniture is well-maintained, refinishing may only be needed once every few decades or less.

Timeless Style

The processes used by Amish people to create their artisan furniture pieces have changed very little. With this in mind, you may assume that the style of current Amish furniture is equivalent to that of modern furnishings. In reality, the style has evolved slowly over time. Today's Amish furniture usually has a Mission or Shaker style. These styles have been prevalent for the last few decades, and this is a sign that they have timeless appeal.

All Amish furniture is made out of solid wood, so the pieces bring a natural element into your space. This natural element may be well-suited for a cottage-style home or a cabin. Likewise, it looks beautiful in homes with traditional decor and even contemporary decor.

While the style of Amish furniture has evolved slowly over time, that does not mean that all Amish furniture looks the same. Because Amish craftsmen use different materials, stains and techniques, each handmade piece is unique. When you invest in Amish furniture, you are buying a one-of-a-kind item. However, do not look for the craftsman's mark. The Amish are humble people who do not seek individual recognition. Instead, they want the focus to be on the fine work that they did to craft the furniture.

Furniture is expensive to purchase, so you understandably want to optimize the life of any furnishings that you decide to invest in. Buying high-quality furniture that can last for decades or longer is only beneficial if these are pieces that will still be aesthetically appealing many years down the road. Because Amish furniture has a timeless, classic look that corresponds well with many interior design schemes, the furniture likely will be a treasured part of your home decor for a lifetime.

Family Heirlooms

In many families, certain heirlooms have been handed down for generations, and this includes furniture. While many of the current furnishings that you find in local stores today will not still be in use a decade or two from now, older pieces that have been handcrafted from quality materials may be a century old or even older. The Amish continue to use the same artisan techniques that they have used for generations. These are techniques that have been taught by elders and that have evolved very little over the decades. Because of this, when you buy Amish furniture, you are buying furniture that has the same quality as yesteryear's pieces.

Of course, many older items get tossed out because they lose their appeal. Even if a dresser, table or another piece of furniture is still in good shape, it may have an outdated look that makes it undesirable. Amish furniture has a charm that is sustained over the years. These are pieces that may look just as wonderful in a home today as they will look decades from now. Because Amish furniture continues to be desired over the years, you can realistically plan on the furniture to become family heirlooms.

True Value

Are Amish furnishings right for your home? You will undoubtedly notice that Amish furniture is priced slightly higher than some of the other lower-quality furniture that has been mass-produced. However, you can see that each Amish furnishing is instilled with true value and is an investment well worth making. With variations in style and materials, now is the perfect time to begin exploring the beautiful possibilities that are available for your home. An easy way to compare a wide variety of Amish pieces is by shopping online.
