Which Asthma Product is the Best for You?

Breathing is easy. Until it's not. When there's shortness of breath, a tight chest, or wheezing, you want relief and you want it fast. Other times you may have a tight chest coupled with sinus symptoms, heavy mucus, and breathing is shallow and labored. It may not be an emergency, but it's no fun and daily activities can be a chore. You want help to breathe better.

If you or someone you love is one of the more than 30 million Americans living with this condition, you know that there's no time to spare when trying to open up constricted airways. Seconds can feel like hours as you run to get your inhaler, administer the dosage, and pray that you'll be able to get a full breath quickly.

BioVent recognizes that natural healing has taken place for centuries and can be a huge catalyst for maintaining open airways to help us breathe better. Certain herbs have been known to facilitate the breathing process, and BioVent has included some in their natural product.

Take care of your body naturally

Before Native Remedies (the manufacturer) describes their products, including BioVent, they remind us what our body needs for respiratory health. We need oxygenated blood. Good breathing encourages getting plenty of oxygen to our blood, which in turn assists with good organ function and keeping our cells alive.

You can do it

Do you have good posture? BioVent reminds us that good posture naturally allows for easier breathing. Regular exercise can encourage good cardiovascular health, exercises the chest and diaphragm muscles, and in turn, promotes strength of the abdominal and rib muscles. They also remind us to stay away from known allergens when possible, as many can cause breathing issues.

Still need some help? Try BioVent drops

Only after the self-help healthy breathing reminders do they offer all-natural BioVent, as Native Remedies won't pressure you to purchase their product. BioVent supports facilitated breathing which supports the immune system. For easy breathing on a regular basis, use this safe and natural remedy. Dilute .5 ml in a small amount of water or juice and drink it. Take it 2-3 times daily on a regular basis for best results.

Safe for all ages

What's in it?

There are several components in the BioVent asthma product. Organic chamomile flower has been used since the times of the early Egyptians and is widely used to support lung health. Organic Astragalus root has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to support the body's defenses. Wild-crafted mullein leaf has been used for ages to fight respiratory disorders. Organic wild cherry bark is a traditional Native American tool that the colonists learned has sedative and expectorant properties. Wild-crafted fresh yerba santa leaf has traditionally been used to deal with upper respiratory conditions including asthma. Organic fresh lobelia herb is also a sedative and can help settle the mind and body.

Great for long-term or seasonal use

Overall, customers seem to be quite happy with BioVent. They like it for seasonal use and for ongoing breathing issues. Those who sing highest praises are those whose children use the product and note much better breathing and diminished wheezing. Most customers appreciate BioVent drops as they can be used for longer-term or seasonal use. Few raters seem to use it for one-time dosage.

#1 asthma product

We like that BioVent's parent company promotes us taking care of our bodies before jumping to a product. The product is natural, safe for all ages, and can be taken short term or long term. For all of these reasons, BioVent earns our highest recommendation among asthma remedies.

Bronchial and Breathing Aide Review 4.5 Star Rating

Bronchial and Breathing Aide

4.5 Star Rating
  • $10.99 for 100 tabs
  • Loosens mucus
  • Relieves lung congestion
  • Thins bronchial secretions

The natural ingredients in Boericke & Tafel's Bronchial and Breathing Aide Tablets are homeopathic catalysts for help in relieving the symptoms of lung congestion. There are also ingredients to aid the painful and dry cough that can come with lung congestion symptoms. Simply place the tablet under the tongue and you may start to feel pretty quick relief.

Natural ingredients

The first active ingredient in the Bronchial and Breathing Aide Tablets is aconitum napellus 3X, which is a go-to for croup. Hepar sulphuris calcareum 12X is a homeopathic ingredient mainly used for a painful, dry cough. Spongia tosta 3X is known for use in aiding cough and hoarseness with painful or burning throat. Stannum metallicum 12X is a dilution to relieve a wet cough.

Easy to use

It's easy to take - no swallowing pills. Place the dissolvable tablet under the tongue until dissolved. Don't take with food. Take 15 minutes before or 30 minutes after drinking anything but water, eating, or brushing teeth.

Some side effects

If you have a severe or persistent sore throat for more than two days, or if the sore throat is accompanied by a headache, high fever, nausea, vomiting, or a rash, consult a physician promptly. If your lung congestion symptoms get worse or don't get better in 5-7 days, consult a physician. As always, check with a doctor before use if you are pregnant or nursing.

Best Asthma Products

Customers are pleased

relief as their lungs seem to open up and breathing is much less labored. Some patients prefer Bronchial and Breathing Aide Tablets over cough medicine as for them it's faster-acting. The taste may not be pleasant, but the results seem to be. As seems to be the case with many products, there are some customers who didn't find the results they were looking for. One consumer reminded us that with a serious asthma attack, a rescue inhaler might be the best option.

Product doesn't mention a satisfaction guarantee

Boericke and Tafel's products don't have a satisfaction guarantee listed on their label or bottles. We'd suggest checking where you purchased it to see if they have a return policy.

Quick relief, a nice go-to

The tablet is taken sublingually - under the tongue. The membranes under the tongue are thin and are a good catalyst for quick absorption of dissolvable tablets such as these. The ingredients in these Bronchial and Breathing Aide Tablets are natural. Users seem to notice symptoms diminish quite quickly and are pleased with the product. It not only can help with difficulty breathing, it seems to help with congestion. For all of those reasons, it's easy for us to recommend this asthma product as one of our top picks.

Buy 2, Get 1 Free

BronchoSoothe is part of Native Remedies, a company that offers natural products. They have a history of B2G1, so check out their site as you try BronchoSoothe to perhaps add on a second and third product. A second Native Remedies product for bronchial ailments is also highly recommended in our reviews, and is part of their optional Respiratory Combo Pack.

Their natural method

Taking care of yourself is their first "remedy.” When that's not enough, they have homeopathic, herbal products, which may include organic ingredients, to encourage your lungs to breathe better. The three main ingredients in BronchoSoothe are found in the blood and help carry oxygen to all parts of the body and can help with spasmodic coughing.

Best Asthma Products

Easy to use

Squeeze the dropper to place liquid in a little water or juice and drink. If there's no liquid handy, you can put BronchoSoothe directly into your mouth.

Best if used regularly

Just as we are all individuals, our bodies may act or react at an individual rate. Some may find a general wellness feeling within days and others might find relief in a longer period of time. Many customers do find relief for current symptoms, but best results may be seen with regular use and with a healthy lifestyle.

Consumers find regular use beneficial

There are some consumers who find quite a bit of relief within a couple of doses in a few hours. Most fans find that regular use is best for them. BronchoSoothe gets them through the allergy seasons. Some have found that they no longer need an inhaler. Others find this product to work well in combination with their rescue inhaler and their CPAP machine.

It's natural and offers relief

We like that BronchoSoothe has natural ingredients and boasts that it's safe to use, listing no common side effects. The ingredients encourage oxygen flow throughout the body, including the lungs, and reviewers seem quite happy with their results. There's another product from Native Remedies which is on our list of highly recommended asthma products, and you may want to consider using this combo pack for better breathing.

Primatene Mist Review 4 Star Rating

Primatene Mist

4 Star Rating
  • $29.99 - 1 bottle
  • For temporary relief of mild symptoms of asthma
  • Encourages relief of tight chest and shortness of breath
  • Small and portable inhaler
  • Found over the counter

It's no fun when you can't breathe. Primatene Mist's aerosol canister provides quick relief for shortness of breath. It's a bronchodilator, opening up the lungs so you can breathe better.

Easy to use

This inhaler looks similar to prescription inhalers, and the instructions are similar. Remove the cap. Shake the canister. Spray into the air. Exhale completely, place the inhaler in the mouth, and inhale deeply while you press down on the canister to release the spray.

Safe to use?

Read the label and include paper to find out the medications it shouldn't interact with. Check with your doctor if you have obesity, diabetes, heart issues, and more.

Non-addictive

Primatene isn't addictive, and be sure to use as directed.

Wasn't this discontinued for a while?

Primatene Mist was discontinued several years ago, but not for safety concerns. The old products used CFCs as propellants, and the new product does not. The new product also releases about half of the medicine because the new method of administration is more efficient. You still get the same, quick relief as you did before the switch.

Best Asthma Products

Best to consult your doctor

The manufacturer suggests you contact your doctor regarding this medication, even though it's not a prescription. It's important for your healthcare provider who manages your asthma to know you're using it.

No satisfaction guarantee on the product

Neither the product label nor the FAQ offers info on a satisfaction guarantee. You can communicate with the place of purchase if you're not happy to see what their return policy is, if Primatene Mist doesn't work for you. We don't see that as a major concern as most users seem to be quite satisfied with its effectiveness.

May save you a trip to the emergency room

There are several people who have found this product handy in a pinch or for emergency use and said they've saved themselves an expensive trip to the emergency room. Some use it as a supplement to their prescribed inhalers, or use it before they can get the refill of the prescribed inhaler. Those who rate the product lower complain about the price. They feel it's too steep, and they don't like that half the sprays have to be in the air and not for direct use.

Specific use

Primatene Mist is the long-standing name in over-the-counter inhalers. It offers quick relief for asthma and shortness of breath. People love this product for emergencies, for exercise, and for allergies when it's hard to breathe. We love this product for tightness of the chest. However, if you have additional symptoms such as heaviness of chest due to mucus or post-nasal drip, or you are looking for something for steady relief for the long term, there are other highly rated products on our list you might check out instead.

Bronkaid Max Review 4 Star Rating

Bronkaid Max

4 Star Rating
  • $16.49 for 60 caplets
  • Aids in easier breathing
  • Available at pharmacies
  • Strongest formula available OTC in a one-caplet dose.

When you want relief from asthma or other bronchial symptoms and don't have anything handy, don't wait days for an OTC product to arrive at your door. Hop on over to your local pharmacy, ask at the pharmacy counter, take one caplet, and start to feel relief. Be sure you go when the pharmacist's counter is open, because behind that area is the only place you can get it.

Get it from your local pharmacy

These caplets are available at pharmacies. Be sure you go when the pharmacy department is open, as you'll have to ask someone to get it behind the pharmacy counter.

Good for lung issues

Reach for Bronkaid Max if you're having bronchial congestion, tightness of chest, shortness or break, and wheezing. The main ingredient is 25 mg of ephedrine sulfate, a bronchodilator.

Safe for older children

Adults and children over 12 can take the one caplet. Children under 12 are not recommended to use this product.

Better in an hour

There's good news and bad news. Good news: you should feel better in an hour. Bad news: if you don't, or you get worse, seek medical attention.

Best Asthma Products

Side effects

There can be side effects from this product. Be sure to read the materials.

The product doesn't offer a satisfaction guarantee

BronkAid doesn't offer a money-back guarantee, but the pharmacy where you purchase it might.

People like it

Consumers like this product for relief of asthma or tightness of chest, especially with allergies or symptoms of a cold. People are happy that you only need one pill and they haven't noticed any side effects such as drowsiness or fatigue. It's easy to use and they are quite satisfied. There are a handful of negative comments. One simply said it doesn't work. One said that not only did it not work for them, but ever since taking BronkAid, they have had chronic high blood pressure.

It's good and reasonably priced, but hard to get

This OTC product is available at your pharmacy, but you'll have to go during the pharmacy hours because it's behind the counter. At least you don't have to wait for it to come in the mail. Consumers sing its praises for being able to feel so much better in about 20-30 minutes. The price is pretty good, so we recommend BronkAid if you're able to find it near you.

Healthy Lungs Review 3.5 Star Rating

Healthy Lungs

3.5 Star Rating
  • $29.99 for 120 capsules
  • All natural
  • Fourteen herbs in one capsule
  • Helps to breathe better fast
  • Stops mucus and phlegm production

Breathe better, stop mucus and allergies promptly with Healthy Lungs, an all-natural asthma product. Each capsule contains fourteen Chinese herbs that have been known to help with allergies and congestion while offering breathing relief.

Quick results and continued relief

For relief, take 1-2 capsules every 4-8 hours. If your symptoms are chronic and you're looking for longer-term breathability, take 1-2 capsules daily. Take it indefinitely if you like.

Lung purifier

Healthy Lungs is obviously for breathing issues, but there can be various reasons to take it. Consider it for sinus infections, seasonal or other allergies, halting the production of mucus and phlegm, and reducing smoker's cough. An added benefit is that it can help clear the lungs of toxins and debris.

Best Asthma Products

Money-back guarantee?

We've read all the information on the bottle, label, and website, and there's no indication of a money-back guarantee. That's pretty consistent with a majority of the OTC breathing products in our review.

People love it, but not everyone

Healthy Lungs users typically say that their mucus greatly cleared up within a half hour and sinuses were clear within four hours with a second dose. Some Californians near wildfires take it regularly to help the effects the smoke has on their lungs. Smokers said it helps with their smokers' cough and clears breathing passageways. Fans love that it not only clears up mucus but also helps with post-nasal drip. Not everyone, however, has noticed a significant reduction in symptoms.

Good product

It's all natural, has virtually no side effects, and can be taken short-term or long-term for relief of tight-feelings in the lungs, congestion, allergy symptoms, and relieving the lungs of toxins and debris. The price is reasonable, and many users love it for both immediate and chronic symptoms. We took into consideration that there were a handful of users who did try it for a period of time and didn't notice much of an improvement. Also, read the label carefully if you have an allergy to almonds.

And if your budget allows for a continual $29.95 per month, go for it. If, however, you're looking for a one-time use such as an inhaler or a short-term use such as for temporary sinus, congestion, or other lung issues, and don't plan to use daily for a lengthy period of time, consider other products we have rated highly.

EpiMist Review 1.5 Star Rating

EpiMist

1.5 Star Rating
  • Non-prescription Inhaler
  • No CFCs or chemical propellant
  • Easy to use
  • 250 doses per inhaler

This inhaler is intended for use for asthma, wheezing, tightness of chest, or shortness of breath. The active ingredient helps to quickly relieve these symptoms. When you need to breathe or don't have your prescribed inhaler handy, consider EpiMist. But if you think it's going to look or act like a traditional inhaler, that's not the case. We'd suggest using a traditional-inhaler product rather than this model.

When you feel the need to breathe

Okay, it's a bad movie quote, but it makes the point. No one likes to struggle to breathe, and no one should have to. The EpiMist inhaler sends relief quickly to the lungs. If you don't feel relief within 20 minutes or get worse, contact your doctor.

Read the warning label

It's intended only for people whose doctor has diagnosed them with asthma. Don't take EpiMist if you're already taking MAOIs and ask your doctor about this product if you have thyroid issues, heart issues, seizures, diabetes, a psychiatric or emotional condition, or more. The list is on the package.

It's an inhaler, but doesn't look like one

This inhaler isn't shaped like the prescription inhaler. Not that it's a problem in itself, but people find it awkward to use and because of the design, it leaks: the bottle looks like it should stand up straight for storage, but it doesn't.

Best Asthma Products

Some love it, some do not

Some EpiMist users love the quick relief and they like it better than their prescription inhaler. Others prefer the well-known brand OTC inhalers over this one. A majority said the product didn't work for them, or that it's a light-feeling dose. Many found the inhaler to leak or not last the 250 doses.

We don't see a satisfaction guarantee

In reading the label, we didn't see a satisfaction guarantee.

It's just not available

When we tried to buy EpiMist most recently, it came up as unavailable and no one seems to know when or if it will be back in stock. Clearly this is a problem.

Choose another product

The idea's a good one - an inhaler for quick relief of asthma symptoms. The actuality is that it's a poor design, it seems like a light dose, it doesn't stand up, it leaks, and let's not forget that it's just not available. You'll obviously need to try something else for your next asthma product.

Mabis Nebulizer Review 1 Star Rating

Mabis Nebulizer

1 Star Rating
  • $44.99 for the portable unit
  • Stylish
  • Petite
  • Built-in handle for portability
  • 5-year limited warranty

The handy Mabis Nebulizer dispenses a fine mist to help you breathe easier in a short amount of time. It's available over the counter so you don't need a doctor's prescription. Available is the key word here. We couldn't find anywhere that it was actually ready for purchase, but you can consider our evaluation in the event that it's in stock somewhere you shop.

This Mabis Minicomp Nebulizer is small and portable

The size is about 7” x 7” x 5” and has a carrying handle, making it a petite, portable unit. It's easy to carry, easy to store, and doesn't take up a great amount of surface space when in use.

Parts included

The mouthpiece is angled for comfort and ease of use. The 7-ft air tube is a generous length for movement while in use. There are five air filters so you'll have extras when needed, and the instructions are in both English and Spanish.

Water or solution?

It's unclear if this product uses water or a solution. Nebulizers typically use a doctor-prescribed solution for opening airways. What's perplexing is that if this product requires a prescribed solution, the doctor might not prescribe the solution without the corresponding prescribed machine. Since this machine isn't available with a prescription, it seems that there may be no need to purchase it.

Best Asthma Products

Where to purchase - a caveat

This item can only be sold in states where a physician's prescription is not required. Our research shows that Medicare will cover a prescribed nebulizer, so this product wouldn't be for Medicare users, and it is unclear if any states don't require a prescription for a nebulizer. If that's the case, then there may not be any states where this product could be sold.

Hard to find

The only place to purchase this product seems to be CVS. However, when we went to CVS' site to purchase this product, the site indicated that it's not sold in stores, not available for pickup, not available for shipping, and it's out of stock online.

Customers are happy?

Since we couldn't purchase this product due to availability, we checked online reviews. There were two. Both were rated highly, and the single comment was that the Mabis worked in half the time of their prescription nebulizer. We don't consider this to be significant enough of a population to get overly excited, however.

At the bottom of our list

The Mabis Nebulizer is only available in states where the prescription is not needed. Unfortunately we couldn't find it available anywhere else, either. It doesn't seem to be available by any means: online, in store, or shipped. Looks like we all have been ghosted.

Continued from above...

Maybe a traditional, prescription-based inhaler hasn't worked for you. Or, maybe you've experienced negative side effects - like a weaker immune system or headaches - or perhaps the ongoing expense has become harder to afford. Whether you want relief from sudden, temporary, seasonal, or long-term lung distress, there's a product for you. There are even asthma products to help clean the lungs and to offer relief for smoker's cough.

Many of these options use all-natural ingredients to soothe your lungs and get you breathing normally, without the side effects that are so commonly experienced with prescription options. Plus, some of these products are administered as a tablet or oral liquid, eliminating the need to try and take a puff of an inhaler when you're already struggling to breathe.

It's important to realize, however, that not all Asthma products work in the same way. Some work to help prevent attacks from happening in the first place, while others operate more like a rescue option at the onset of breathing difficulties. As you consider the various alternatives to prescription medications, be sure you understand the intended forms that each one provides.

With such a variety of products available for the various symptoms you or your loved one possesses, it can be challenging knowing where to start. Here are several factors to consider when looking for a product for asthma or other breathing challenges:

  • Your symptoms. Do you have sudden onset of shortness of breath? Do you have chronic tightness of the chest? Is the wheezing coupled with phlegm or dry? Are your symptoms short-term, seasonal, or chronic?
  • Immediate or long-term help. Are you looking for immediate relief or are you wanting to take products daily for help long into the future?
  • Ingredients. There are products that are all-natural with mostly organic ingredients, there are homeopathic recipes, and there are the over-the-counter drugstore variety. There are helpful products in all categories; choose the one you feel most comfortable with.
  • Price. Products can range from $10 to almost $40. If you're looking for occasional use, price may not matter too much. If you want to keep using the product to hopefully avoid the scary feeling of a tight chest, you might consider how much the product will cost you monthly.
  • Your doctor. Before taking any product for lung support, consult your healthcare provider. Be especially aware if you are pregnant, nursing, or plan on dispensing a product to a child. Some consumers have been thrilled to reduce their dosage or number of meds when on our highly-rated, over-the-counter products.
  • Effectiveness. As with any remedy, results may vary: there's no single asthma product that works 100% of the time for every patient. However, if the medication or supplement tends to work for many people with your same condition (for example, asthma or COPD), chances are that it's a good place for you to start too.
  • Satisfaction guarantee. Because not all products work for all people, the best asthma remedies come with a satisfaction guarantee that lets you get a refund if you try it and don't see results. A solid refund policy can make it financially risk-free to experiment with a new asthma product, if cost is an issue for you.

To get you breathing easy again, Top Consumer Reviews has reviewed the top products for asthma-related issues. All are over the counter, so they are easy to obtain and available without a prescription. We've chosen a variety of products: inhalers, capsules and caplets, dissolvable tablets, liquid, and a nebulizer. We're sure you'll find an asthma product to get you on the road to breathing better.

Asthma Product FAQ

Asthma is a condition that causes your airways to narrow, swell, and make extra mucus, so it's harder to breathe. It is a long-term condition: people with serious cases are affected by it every day. People who have asthma are usually extra sensitive to "triggers” like dust, chemicals, smoke, pet dander, or changes in the weather that cause inflammation in their lungs.
Asthma is an extremely common condition with over 30 million diagnoses in the United States. It can affect children and adults alike, although adults are more likely to have asthma than kids. Some risk factors include having one or more parent with asthma, allergies, obesity, stress, smoking, and gender. For whatever reason, adult women are more likely to have asthma than men.
Having asthma can have a big effect on your hobbies. Physical activities are particularly limited since asthma can be brought on by exercise or certain weather. If too much strain is put on the lungs and inflammation becomes bad enough, an asthma attack can occur and sometimes be life threatening. Because of this, it can take a mental and emotional toll on individuals who aren't able to participate in exercise as much as they would like to.
Yes! There are quite a few products you can buy online without a prescription to help with asthma symptoms. Unfortunately, asthma can't be cured completely, but it can be kept at bay to allow people more freedom and comfort to do what they want. The products available online help to soothe the throat, prevent coughing, and help people breathe easier.
There are a variety of ways that asthma products work and can be used. This is great since some people prefer taking an ingestible pill, while others would rather use a nasal spray or something topical. One of the highest rated asthma products comes in tablet form, while others are meant to drink or be inhaled.
If you've dealt with asthma for a long time, you've likely forked out big bucks for an inhaler and prescription. Some people are paying hundreds of dollars a month, which can be a financial burden. In order to get rid of the need for an inhaler or stretch your prescription for longer, you can buy asthma products online for just $30 or so. This is significantly cheaper and could save you lots of money in the long run!
Yes! Most asthma products online that have high ratings are safe for both children and adults. They have straightforward ingredient lists so you can make sure you feel safe using them. Some ingestible medications are all-natural and made from plant-based sources, so they don't come with harmful side effects or cause issues with other medications. We have come a long way with fighting asthma - there are better products on the market than there have ever been before!
Double check the return policy or satisfaction guarantee before purchasing an asthma product. Luckily, these companies know that everyone's case of asthma is slightly different and not everyone reacts the same to medication or OTC products. There are a lot of great companies that allow customers to try out their asthma products for 30-60 days and decide if they like it while still being eligible for a full refund. Most asthma products are low-risk since you can get your money back if you need to try something else.
