There are lots of ways to shop for auto insurance online that can help you not only to get the coverage you need but also to understand what you're getting (and what you're not). While you could go right to the website of one of the big-name brands in car insurance, how will you know if there are better, more affordable options out there?
You won't - unless you opt to use a quote service that compares offers across multiple insurance companies large and small. That's much more efficient than filling out quote forms on a dozen or more insurer websites.

Insurify is the best way to buy auto insurance online. Whether you want a policy from a well-known company like Progressive or you want to shop for a good deal from one of the "little guys" , you'll find all of that and more here. The quote tool is easy to use and hassle-free, and you can buy your policy instantly online or work with an agent over the phone: your choice. Thousands of clients give Insurify a five-star rating, and we're sure you'll love this service too. Insurify gets our top ranking among auto insurance providers online.
The Zebra is one of our favorite auto insurance referral services. You can use the site to get a ballpark estimate of your policy costs or go all-in and get your coverage online. You'll have options from all of the major insurers and plenty of the smaller ones too, and you'll never have to worry about getting spammy emails and texts if you get a quote here. The Zebra is one of the best resources you have when shopping for car insurance.
Savvy is a newer option for comparison-shopping your auto insurance, and they take a pretty unique approach: if you're currently insured, you can securely log in with that account and your coverage will be automatically imported to give you apples-to-apples quotes. The company is off to a good start and most customers say that Savvy was easy to use and cost-effective. Our experience wasn't quite as smooth, but we still think Savvy is worth a look.
Gabi is an auto insurance referral platform backed by Experian, one of the nation's credit bureaus. You can use your current policy information to start the quote process here, though it's not mandatory. We didn't really see quotes that lined up with Gabi's touted "average savings of $961" , and the entire experience here was often tedious (and came with more texts and emails than average). It's not the worst way to get car insurance, but it probably won't be your favorite either.
ValuePenguin is a LendingTree brand. Using this auto insurance platform can help you learn more about different insurers and how your rate will be impacted by your age and driving history. That's where the usefulness of this site stops, however: not only will you be redirected to another service to actually get your policy, but you can also expect to be inundated with unwanted calls, emails and postal mail once you provide ValuePenguin with your contact info. We'd suggest using this platform strictly for research, not for auto insurance quotes.
CARCHEX could be a great option if you want an extended vehicle warranty or to look up a car's history through its VIN number, but this isn't where you should look for auto insurance. When you enter your zip code to get a quote, this site just points you in the direction of other websites you can use to find a policy. Skip CARCHEX and go directly to one of the higher-rated auto insurance sites in our review.
US Insurance Online is a referral platform for auto, home, life, and health insurance. Although its parent company, All Web Leads, has an "A+" rating and accreditation from the BBB, we can't find anything to praise about this service. And, offering your contact information could lead to a barrage of unwanted marketing messages. Use a different auto insurance website and skip US Insurance Online.
To get the right coverage for you and any other drivers in your household, you'll first need to know what's required in your state. Some kind of coverage is mandatory no matter where you live, but there's a big difference between the Bodily Injury and Property Damage minimums of 15/30/10 in Arizona, and the 50/100/25 minimums that include Bodily Injury, Property Damage, Uninsured and Underinsured Motorists, and First-Party Medical Expenses for drivers in Maine.
If you're struggling to make sense of that, don't worry. Some online insurance sites can do a good job of explaining exactly what you need to know. But, not all auto insurance platforms are the same.
Some serve strictly as lead generators: your information is passed along, sometimes to unrelated marketing companies, and you may find yourself overwhelmed with calls, texts, and emails long after you've chosen your coverage. It's better to look carefully and choose a website that actually provides quotes from different insurers and can help you get your policy set up, no spam required.
