ValuePenguin is a LendingTree company that was launched in 2013. They provide in-depth analysis and research on everything from insurance to credit cards. Their mission alongside LendingTree is to empower customers with tools and information to make them smarter and more informed about financial decisions. They've been featured by The New York Times, TIME, Bloomberg, CNNMoney, The Washington Post, and Reuters.
Compare to save
ValuePenguin says that comparing auto insurance quotes from multiple companies is the best way to save money. By comparing quotes, you could save up to $245 on full coverage. On average, ValuePenguin found that State Farm, Travelers, and USAA are the three national companies that have the cheapest auto insurance rates for full coverage.
Insightful articles
There are over 3,000 articles from ValuePenguin that address key questions about health insurance, car insurance, and credit cards for people who want a deep dive understanding of any of these topics. Through their website you can compare full car insurance coverage by company, state, age, accident history, and credit score just to give you an overview of how they might fluctuate.
The usual type of questions
To get an idea of what auto insurance rates are out there for you, ValuePenguin has a free, simple, and secure form for you to fill out. You'll start by adding your zip code, age, and if you're currently insured. Then they'll want to know about the car you drive, if you're married, if you're a homeowner, your level of education, accident history, name, address, and email address. None of the questions are out of the ordinary, so they're exactly what we expected.
No real quotes
ValuePenguin matched us with two companies to get rates from. They were Progressive and Insurify. Insurify also helps people get connected with insurance quotes, so it's kind of funny that they are one of the places recommended by ValuePenguin. We are almost always given an offer for a quote for Progressive and every single time we have to redirect to their website and fill out our information all over again. It's totally useless.
Sells your information
One of the major complaints against ValuePenguin is that they sell your information and leave you with lots of spam calls, texts, and emails. People are often extremely frustrated after providing them with contact information. Like us, they don't end up receiving quotes, but rather get bombarded with calls from different sales agents. LendingTree has an "A+” Better Business Bureau rating, but nothing suggests that ValuePenguin is providing a lot of value for anyone.
Not as they appear
We wouldn't give our personal information over to ValuePenguin expecting to receive competitive auto insurance quotes from other companies. If we had to recommend them for something, it would just be for their help articles and website that may give you some helpful insight into choosing insurance if you're doing it for the first time. However, as far as providing the useful service that they claim to, ValuePenguin fails miserably and gets a well-deserved score here.
Whether you've just turned 16, or you're 99 years old and out driving on the roads, you need auto insurance. This protects you and everyone else by making sure that if an accident happens, it will be paid for and taken care of. Whether you get in a small fender bender or (heaven forbid) a devastating large-scale accident, your insurance will kick in and save you from potentially having to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket.
Besides paying for damage done to your car and anyone else potentially involved in an issue on the road, auto insurance can cover things like theft, weather, keying, or natural disasters. It can help pay for medical bills, lost wages, or even a funeral if anyone is injured or killed. There are a range of other things your insurance can help with depending on the plan like a cracked windshield, which comes in handy since we've all been hit by a flying rock or two on the road.
There are usually different tiers of auto insurance plans that you can choose from that will determine how much is covered. You're probably familiar with a few big-name auto insurance companies that seem to dominate the marketplace with ads and commercials. But there are actually quite a few companies out there and some could save you a significant amount of money compared to their competitors.
You can usually get a quick online quote within minutes that will help you compare pricing between companies. There are even some services that will take your information and instantly help you compare quotes among a bunch of different companies without you having to visit them one at a time. Depending on your driving history, some of these services give you more accurate quotes than others, but it's always worth a try.
