American Auto Shipping has been in business for over 20 years. They work as a middleman, taking your request for car shipping and contacting the transport companies for you. They aim to make the process easy for everyone involved.

Damage-free guarantee

American Auto Shipping offers a damage-free guarantee for their customers, but be aware that this isn't entirely what it seems. Yes, they will pay if there are damages found on the car within 24 hours of drop-off. But they will not pay for the damages. They will help you in the form of giving you up to $500 towards your deductible, to make a claim with your own insurance. This isn't really ideal for many people who don't wish to see their car insurance rates go up or don't have the right coverage.

Multiple transportation options

Many auto transport companies only use large trucks as carriers, but American Auto Shipping also uses many other forms of transportation, including:

  • Cross country
  • Military car shipping
  • Motorcycle shipping
  • By rail
  • From Hawaii to mainland
  • Heavy equipment transport
  • Door-to-door shipping
  • Terminal-to-terminal transportation
  • Open carrier shipments
  • Enclosed auto transport
  • Flatbed transportation
  • RORO (roll-on, roll-off, used for overseas shipments)
  • Auction transportation services

Even within all of these choices, there are multiple options, so be sure to check the descriptions to pick the options that fit you best.

Personal concierge service

American Auto Shipping brokers are referred to as your own personal concierge. One agent will be your assigned concierge during the entire process of transporting your vehicle. Unfortunately, American Auto Shipping's customer service has been reported as being rude and, at times, abusive, using foul language and bullying tactics with customers. Nobody wants that kind of "concierge" service.

Questionable inflation of good reviews

American Auto Shipping proudly leans on its high ratings from Google and the Better Business Bureau. Unfortunately, many review sites, including the Better Business Bureau, are updating or reevaluating this company. One review site posted a warning about the reviews, citing that American Auto Shipping is being investigated for possibly inflating their rating average with fake reviews. We hope this isn't the case, but we'd rather go with a company not dealing with this kind of issue when we're anticipating the chaos associated with moving something as important as a vehicle. We also feel that while the company's reputation is being updated by the BBB, the website should take down the outdated grade.

Claims from customers of being charged an additional $100

More than a few customers reported being charged an additional $100 by American Auto Shipping in what appears to be a company practice. Customers will schedule a pickup of their vehicle but continue to get texts and emails saying that American Auto Shipping hasn't found a carrier to take the job. Customers call in, worried that they won't get their car picked up in time. Next, American Auto Shipping will tell them the quote offer is too low, so if they can raise it to $100, the carriers will be more likely to take on the job. One reviewer said he had access to Central Dispatch, which is what American Auto Shipping uses to put out bids to carriers, and saw that his car transport job was never raised the $100 after he paid it to American Auto Shipping. This is a repeated behavior, and it appears that American Auto Shipping may be pocketing that $100.

Use this company at your own risk

After seeing some of the poor responses of the people at American Auto Shipping to customer complaints, the possibility that the company may have some dishonest positive reviews and may even have some slightly sketchy policies, we've decided we would most likely never consider American Auto Shipping as an option. That being said, as long as you are willing to take a risk, it has historically rated well, and there seem to be some customers who have had a good experience with this company.

Where Can You Find the Best Auto Transport Companies?

Auto transport companies make it easy and fast to move vehicles from one place to another. The biggest benefit is that it saves time. Driving a car across long distances can take a lot of time, especially if you're not familiar with the route or don't have enough time. Auto transport companies handle everything, so you don't have to worry about the trip. Many companies also offer door-to-door service, picking up and delivering your car exactly where you want it, which makes the whole process easier.

Whether you're a car enthusiast, classic car collector, snowbird, or being relocated by the military, there are lots of brokers and other options out there available to help you transport your car to wherever it is you're going.

One big advantage for using an auto transport company is that these companies keep your car safe during the journey. They use special trucks, like open or closed trailers, to make sure your car is protected from road debris, bad weather, or accidents that could happen on the road. Some companies even offer insurance to cover any damage, so you don't have to worry. This is especially important if you have a valuable or classic car that needs extra care.

Another plus for auto transport companies is they can actually be cheaper than driving the car yourself. When you add up costs like gas, food, lodging, and the wear and tear on your car, driving long distances can get expensive. Auto transport services usually include everything in the price, and it can be more affordable than you think. If you need to move more than one car, many companies give discounts for transporting multiple vehicles, making it a great option for businesses or people moving with several cars.

The car transport industry includes any company that ships finished vehicles. That means that many car transport companies deal in businesses and corporate-level car hauling in addition to working with individuals. Some carriers deal mainly with individuals, as they are smaller and independent. Other companies have a fleet - but most do not deal directly with individuals. They instead rely on brokers who post your job on a bid board that only brokers and carriers have access to see. Then, your broker will give you the best quote and set up your pickup and delivery, charging a fee for their services. The carrier's part of the total money billed is given directly to them by you. The broker is not associated with the carrier and is not responsible for damages or theft of your vehicle - the carrier is the only one liable for damages.

The average cost to ship a car across the country is around $1,500. However, numerous variables affect pricing. And although auto transportation companies can feel similar at first glance, it's important to consider the best fit for your needs and your vehicle. Most companies can transport your car to almost any location.

So, how do you choose the auto transport company for your needs? With so many different services out there, it can be hard to select the best option. If you're not sure where to start, here are a few things to help you decide:

To help you find the right transportation for your vehicles, Top Consumer Reviews has evaluated and ranked today's most popular auto transport companies across the US. We hope this will make it easy to choose the best way to let someone else get your dream car safely home.

Auto Transport FAQ

What are auto transport brokers?
Transport brokers serve as the middleman between you and carriers. Their job is to vet the carriers for you, take the hassle out of the search process, and set you up with the best carrier for your needs.
What's the difference between Auto Shipping services and Auto Carriers?
The main difference is what they offer. Auto shipping services provide you with options for different auto carriers, insurance for your trip, and management for your transportation. The auto carrier is the actual business that will take your car from one place to the next.
Why hire someone to transport your car?
Some vehicle moves require shipping, like an overseas journey, but if you're just going from one state to the next, it might seem strange to hire someone to move your car. However, the benefits of having someone else move your car include less stress on moving day, fewer trips back and forth if you have more than one car, fewer miles on a car that has a lease or low mileage, and safety for your vehicle.
What's the benefit of using a "middleman" company?
Instead of going directly to the carrier, using a middleman or broker can save you time, money, and help you get a trustworthy service the first time. You may also get extra benefits like damage coverage or a rental car if your delivery winds up being late.
What kinds of vehicles can you transport?
This depends on which company you go with, but many brokers offer options for cars, boats, golf carts, RVs, heavy machinery, military vehicles, and much more. Just make sure that the company you're working with has what you need.
What about insurance for transporting your car?
Many brokers guarantee that their carriers are insured on their own, but some brokers also offer additional insurance packages if you're transporting something you're really worried about. Average insurance options cover up to $200,000.
What can I expect for the pricing?
Pricing is difficult in this industry. You'll see a lot of brokers that don't have prices on their site because the final quote will depend on several factors: what you're trying to ship, where you're going, what time of year you're trying to move, what kind of supply and demand there is for carriers, and what your timeline is. The best brokers will give you a quote and stick to it, so make sure you find one that promises to lock in the quote after they give it to you.
Is it safe to hire a carrier yourself?
This can be perfectly safe. However, it is a lot more work, and you have to do more vetting on your own than if you use a broker. The risk is about the same as hiring a moving company yourself, but you won't get any of the additional insurance offered by most brokers.
