On the uShip website

uShip, based in Austin, Texas, is an online marketplace for shipping services - you can think of it as an eBay for shipping and transport. Individuals and businesses post items they need shipped, including auto transport, boat shipping, moving services, and the transport of heavy industrial equipment. Then you let the carriers fight for your business, and you pick the winner. Trusted by eBay, Hydrow, Etsy, and more, uShip has developed a reliable reputation. uShip also provides real-time estimates and quotes for things being sold at auction. In 2011, eBay Motors integrated the uShip Price Estimator as a vehicle shipping option in its listings from the United States.

More than just cars

uShip has carriers willing to ship all kinds of vehicle types: cars, motorcycles, and boats, and also some more unique options like airplanes, RVs, ATVs, and trailers. They also have carriers who can ship internationally.

Everything is really up to you

uShip is a neutral platform and doesn't verify any of the carriers' insurance credentials. It's up to you to find out if they are a legitimate carrier that you will trust. Although they do offer cargo insurance from Lloyd's of London, you will be charged a fee to use said insurance. The "Ship with Confidence" Guarantee only compensates you up to $500 in case of property damage or if services aren't rendered.

uShip Protection Plan

Be aware that it takes a long time to get return emails, so if you opt for the uShip Protection Plan, you may exceed the time limit for claims simply because customers report they take a long time to respond. We found that while uShip seemed to deny most cases when customers tried to file claims through the uShip Protection Plan, they are very willing to refund their match fee and will quickly do that if the customer has a legitimate issue.

Impressive community rules

uShip has impressive community rules when dealing with its carriers. Some of these rules are stated on the website: "As Respect is one of our company core values, we expect all members of our community - shipping customers, service providers, and uShip employees - to act with empathy, honesty, transparency, and integrity." When looking at responses from customer complaints, we noticed that while they are not disrespectful, we'd love to see a little more friendliness and compassion when problems arise.

uShip has a lot going for it

uShip really does have a lot going for it. Its connection with major players like Richie's Auctions and eBay Motors, as well as its robust number of carriers willing to bid on your job and their many awards, gives you a sense of reliability. You will definitely feel more in control of what carrier you decide to use. Be aware, however, that uShip does tack on a "match" fee, usually between 15 and 17 percent of your job cost.

Mostly high ratings

Accredited by the Better Business Bureau with an "A+" and 5-star rating and high ratings at Trustpilot, uShip stands out as a great alternative to shipping brokers. A vast majority of customers have high praises for uShip. Their deliveries went smoothly - and in fact, there are many repeat customers on the platform. Most complaints arrive from customers not vetting their chosen carrier, not understanding that uShip is not a broker but rather a platform, and from not reading the terms of the Protection Plan. Most of the time, things go well, but when the industry standard is an estimated 1 in 20 vehicles that get damaged with shipping, there will rightfully be some complaints. It's no secret that insurers want to deny claims, and carriers do not want to file a claim. But that is an industry-wide problem, not a uShip-exclusive problem.

Tracking is much easier than with a broker

Customers routinely state that tracking is easier with uShip because the carriers are people you've chosen, and most of the time there is continual contact. Legitimate carriers on uShip want good ratings, and most will go above and beyond and update you frequently - plus you also can go online to check the status of your vehicle.

Option to pay upfront or upon delivery

uShip Payments allows you to pay for your shipment in full upon booking through their secure payments processor. Once your shipment is booked, the Release Payment option will become available. Once you click Release Payment, you will be prompted to verify. that the shipment has been received and that the payment release cannot be undone. Check that, and your payment is complete.

Overall a good pick

The positives of using this reverse auction-style platform are that if you can pay upfront or on delivery, you get to vet your carrier instead of relying on a third-party broker to do that for you, and you will actually get real-time updates from your carrier. It's not hard to read through reviews of carriers, and the website even offers tips on how to vet them. In spite of some complaints, we have also seen that uShip will terminate carriers immediately when needed and will try to help customers who run into problems. You will have a positive experience with uShip if you conduct thorough research and thoroughly evaluate the carrier who won your bid.

Where Can You Find the Best Auto Transport Companies?

Auto transport companies make it easy and fast to move vehicles from one place to another. The biggest benefit is that it saves time. Driving a car across long distances can take a lot of time, especially if you're not familiar with the route or don't have enough time. Auto transport companies handle everything, so you don't have to worry about the trip. Many companies also offer door-to-door service, picking up and delivering your car exactly where you want it, which makes the whole process easier.

Whether you're a car enthusiast, classic car collector, snowbird, or being relocated by the military, there are lots of brokers and other options out there available to help you transport your car to wherever it is you're going.

One big advantage for using an auto transport company is that these companies keep your car safe during the journey. They use special trucks, like open or closed trailers, to make sure your car is protected from road debris, bad weather, or accidents that could happen on the road. Some companies even offer insurance to cover any damage, so you don't have to worry. This is especially important if you have a valuable or classic car that needs extra care.

Another plus for auto transport companies is they can actually be cheaper than driving the car yourself. When you add up costs like gas, food, lodging, and the wear and tear on your car, driving long distances can get expensive. Auto transport services usually include everything in the price, and it can be more affordable than you think. If you need to move more than one car, many companies give discounts for transporting multiple vehicles, making it a great option for businesses or people moving with several cars.

The car transport industry includes any company that ships finished vehicles. That means that many car transport companies deal in businesses and corporate-level car hauling in addition to working with individuals. Some carriers deal mainly with individuals, as they are smaller and independent. Other companies have a fleet - but most do not deal directly with individuals. They instead rely on brokers who post your job on a bid board that only brokers and carriers have access to see. Then, your broker will give you the best quote and set up your pickup and delivery, charging a fee for their services. The carrier's part of the total money billed is given directly to them by you. The broker is not associated with the carrier and is not responsible for damages or theft of your vehicle - the carrier is the only one liable for damages.

The average cost to ship a car across the country is around $1,500. However, numerous variables affect pricing. And although auto transportation companies can feel similar at first glance, it's important to consider the best fit for your needs and your vehicle. Most companies can transport your car to almost any location.

So, how do you choose the auto transport company for your needs? With so many different services out there, it can be hard to select the best option. If you're not sure where to start, here are a few things to help you decide:

To help you find the right transportation for your vehicles, Top Consumer Reviews has evaluated and ranked today's most popular auto transport companies across the US. We hope this will make it easy to choose the best way to let someone else get your dream car safely home.

Auto Transport FAQ

What are auto transport brokers?
Transport brokers serve as the middleman between you and carriers. Their job is to vet the carriers for you, take the hassle out of the search process, and set you up with the best carrier for your needs.
What's the difference between Auto Shipping services and Auto Carriers?
The main difference is what they offer. Auto shipping services provide you with options for different auto carriers, insurance for your trip, and management for your transportation. The auto carrier is the actual business that will take your car from one place to the next.
Why hire someone to transport your car?
Some vehicle moves require shipping, like an overseas journey, but if you're just going from one state to the next, it might seem strange to hire someone to move your car. However, the benefits of having someone else move your car include less stress on moving day, fewer trips back and forth if you have more than one car, fewer miles on a car that has a lease or low mileage, and safety for your vehicle.
What's the benefit of using a "middleman" company?
Instead of going directly to the carrier, using a middleman or broker can save you time, money, and help you get a trustworthy service the first time. You may also get extra benefits like damage coverage or a rental car if your delivery winds up being late.
What kinds of vehicles can you transport?
This depends on which company you go with, but many brokers offer options for cars, boats, golf carts, RVs, heavy machinery, military vehicles, and much more. Just make sure that the company you're working with has what you need.
What about insurance for transporting your car?
Many brokers guarantee that their carriers are insured on their own, but some brokers also offer additional insurance packages if you're transporting something you're really worried about. Average insurance options cover up to $200,000.
What can I expect for the pricing?
Pricing is difficult in this industry. You'll see a lot of brokers that don't have prices on their site because the final quote will depend on several factors: what you're trying to ship, where you're going, what time of year you're trying to move, what kind of supply and demand there is for carriers, and what your timeline is. The best brokers will give you a quote and stick to it, so make sure you find one that promises to lock in the quote after they give it to you.
Is it safe to hire a carrier yourself?
This can be perfectly safe. However, it is a lot more work, and you have to do more vetting on your own than if you use a broker. The risk is about the same as hiring a moving company yourself, but you won't get any of the additional insurance offered by most brokers.
