Barstools are a versatile and stylish seating option that can elevate your kitchen, dining area, home bar, or even a game room. Whether you're looking for a sleek, modern design or a cozy, rustic feel, there's a barstool to match your space and aesthetic. And, lucky for all of us, there's no need to try and find the right seating by traipsing from one store to another.
One of the biggest advantages of buying barstools online is variety. Whether you need backless stools that tuck neatly under a counter, or cushioned swivel chairs for extra comfort, you can easily compare options from multiple brands. Plus, many online stores offer customer reviews, which can give you real-world insights into a barstool's durability, comfort, and assembly. Even some of the most well-stocked brick-and-mortar stores only offer their full selection of barstools online.

Wayfair is one of the biggest names in online home shopping, offering just about everything you could need to furnish and decorate your space. Whether you're giving your home a full makeover or just need one perfect barstool, this retailer has you covered.
Vast inventory from under $100 to over $5,000
One of the reasons why Wayfair regularly lands at the top of our list is its vast selection, and that's certainly true when it comes to barstools. Whether you'd like a 6-pack of inexpensive plastic chairs for under $100 or a leather-and-brass, old school-style design by Aston Court (for $4,346), you're going to find it at Wayfair. Plus, the selection is as variable as the weather: even over the course of our evaluation, the inventory increased by over 1,000 barstools, and the highest-priced chair was no longer that Aston Court model we mentioned. Koket's Enchanted Upholstered Counter Stool for "just” $9,363 took the prize there, and there were several other bar and counter stools by Koket, ARTERIORS, and Vanguard Furniture that also came in at a $4,500+ price point.
Wayfair's filters are super-helpful
With so many options, narrowing down your choices is key - and Wayfair makes it simple. Filters let you refine your search by seat height, color, material, weight capacity, and even whether the item ships quickly to your zip code. If sustainability is a priority, you can find eco-friendly options too. These tools turn what could be an overwhelming search into a hassle-free shopping experience.
Detailed info to make a smart choice
As you browse your results after applying those filters, you can instantly see if a stool comes in multiple colors, whether it ships free (all orders over $49 do), and if it's on sale. Click on any listing, and you'll find an extensive but well-organized product description - so whether you're splurging on a high-end designer stool or grabbing an affordable set for the patio, you can make an informed decision without wading through unnecessary details.
Thousands of customer ratings on barstools
One of Wayfair's biggest strengths is the wealth of customer reviews. With thousands of ratings on the most popular styles, you can see how a barstool holds up in other people's homes before you buy. Real photos, detailed feedback, and honest pros and cons make it easier to choose the best fit for your space. For example, on many of the Nieva Backless Indoor-Outdoor Counter Height Stools, we found over 21,000 ratings - and they nearly averaged out to a perfect 5 stars.
30-day returns but you pay for shipping
While Wayfair excels in selection and pricing, its return process isn't as customer-friendly as some competitors. Since there are no physical stores, all returns must be shipped back, with the cost deducted from your refund. The 30-day window is fairly standard, but it's worth considering the return fees before making a purchase - especially for larger orders.
"A+” from the BBB
With thousands of home goods sold daily (maybe even hourly), Wayfair inevitably sees its share of customer complaints. The company maintains an "A+” rating and accreditation with the BBB, largely due to its commitment to responding to and resolving issues. For barstools specifically, those individual product reviews we mentioned are your best resource for gauging quality and customer satisfaction.
Still our #1 retailer of barstools
Between the vast selection, competitive pricing, and easy-to-use shopping tools, Wayfair remains our favorite place to buy barstools online. While the return policy has its downsides, the sheer variety and customer reviews here make it easy to shop with confidence. If you're looking for stylish, well-priced barstools, Wayfair is the place to shop first.
Home Depot is the go-to destination for DIYers, homeowners, and anyone tackling a home improvement project, big or small. Whether you're upgrading your kitchen, refreshing your outdoor space, or just need a single tool to get the job done, this home improvement giant has you covered. With thousands of products online and in-store, plus helpful services like tool rentals, installation, and free pickup or delivery on many items, Home Depot makes it easy to bring your vision to life. Even the least handy shopper can feel confident taking on their next project here.
Use the filters to sort through 4,300+ barstools
If barstools are on that home improvement checklist you've been making, Home Depot has plenty to offer. With a huge selection of 4,300+ styles and flexible pickup or delivery options, this retailer makes it easy to find seating that fits your space and budget. But don't worry - you won't have to scroll through every single one to find what you need. Their filtering options can help to refine your search by seat height, material, color, features, and more. Need something right away? Check the "Get It Fast" filter to see which options are available at your nearest store. And, of course, if you measured your space in advance (good job), you can select the right seat height to avoid any guesswork.
At-a-glance info
Each barstool listing makes it simple to compare options. You'll instantly see price, color choices, availability for pickup or delivery (with either option being free for most barstools), and customer ratings. If you find a favorite but aren't quite ready to buy, just click the heart icon to save it for later.
Prices range from under $30 to more than $1,700
Now, let's move on to some specifics. Home Depot carries barstools at all price points, from budget-friendly basics to high-end designs. You'll find options like the Leisuremod White Backless Round Plastic Counter Stool for just $29 or the slightly sturdier ACESSENTIALS Matte Black Bar Stool in metal and wood for just $0.74 more, the all-wood Winsome-brand Satori and Carter models for $33.74 to $35.99, and several other designs for less than $50 per barstool. Flipping to the other side of the price spectrum, Home Depot may surprise you with the Benjara Low Back Wooden Frame Counter Stool, priced at $1,741.41 - or any of the chairs in the Benjara brand (which all seem to be sold over $1,000 each, even for the styles that almost look more like a stepstool).
Customer ratings and Q&A can help you choose
Despite being better known for lumber and power tools than home furnishings, Home Depot has some surprisingly well-reviewed barstools. Some styles have hundreds of shopper ratings, with real customer photos and detailed feedback. For example, Linon Home Decor's Concord barstools - backless, counter-height, wood frame and faux leather upholstery on the seat - come in with nearly 1,500 ratings that average 4.4 stars. Why not take advantage of other people's experiences to pick a barstool that you're more than likely to love? And, Home Depot's Questions & Answers section on each product page lets you ask about anything you're still unsure of, before you buy.
Generous shipping and returns
Most of the barstools offered here come with free delivery or no-cost in-store pickup. And, Home Depot's standard return window is 90 days, but some barstools only come with a 30-day return period. That information is listed near the "Add to Cart” button on each product page, so be sure to check before you buy. Fortunately, most returns can be done in-store or through the mail with a prepaid UPS label - no return shipping fees required.
Surprisingly great choice for barstools
With a vast selection, easy pickup and delivery, and convenient return options, Home Depot is a smart choice for anyone looking to upgrade their seating. Plus, while you're browsing the online store, you may even get inspired to tackle a few more home improvement projects. Home Depot might not be the first name that comes to mind when shopping for barstools, but it holds its own against more traditional furniture stores and earns a near-perfect score from us.
Arhaus has been bringing high-quality, handcrafted furniture to homes since 1986, when it started in Cleveland, Ohio. You'll find a mix of classic and modern designs here, with pieces made from sustainable materials like reclaimed wood and recycled metal. Arhaus works with artisans from around the world, so a lot of what you see is more one-of-a-kind style than mass-produced. With more than 80 showrooms across the US and a strong online store, it's easy to shop for everything from sofas and dining tables to lighting and rugs. If you're looking for furniture that's built to last and has a more unique, artisan feel, Arhaus could be a great place to start.
About 50 barstools from $300 to $1,600+
How about barstools? Arhaus has a decent selection of about 50 options, with styles you won't find at the other retailers on our list. Of course, that uniqueness and quality comes at a cost: there are no barstools here under $300, and the most expensive models are over $1,600 when not on sale. You could use the filters to zero in on the chairs that fit your expectations for height, color, price, or several other dimensions, but the inventory is visually appealing (and small) enough to just scroll through too. As you browse, it's easy to see the other color options each model comes in.
Not necessarily available for immediate delivery
Often their products are made when ordered and therefore pay close attention to the details of each Arhaus barstool, so that you don't miss something important - like whether or not it's actually in stock for immediate purchase. For example, the Jagger Armless Stool in Black with Antique Brass had a designation of "in stock in 6 weeks” during our most recent visit to the website. That availability could change as you move through the various options (like counter vs. bar height, fabric color, and so on). We recently ordered some beautiful cane back barstools and they were delivered in a month and in perfect condition.
Details are plentiful (and fun to read)
Most of the other specifications you could need are right on the product listing for each Arhaus barstool, including a fun "Story” section (instead of a boring old "description”), important info for caring for your furniture, and the dimensions. However, we didn't find the details of user weight capacity on the barstools we checked out, so reach out to the retailer if that could be a potential concern.
Limited returns but generous warranty
With respect to returns, Arhaus gives you a short 14 days to send back our barstool if you change your mind; just be aware that you'll pay a 10% restocking fee. On all barstools, Arhaus provides a 5-year warranty against breakage and defects during normal usage. That's much longer than you'll find with most retailers of barstools on our list.
White glove shipping will cost you $299
One detail that doesn't come up until you get to the checkout is the shipping cost at Arhaus. Whether you're buying a single barstool or a whole set, you'll be charged $299. It's true that you're getting white glove service for that fee, which includes unpacking the barstool(s), assembling them if required, and removing all packaging and debris. At times, Arhaus offers free shipping specials to reduce the overall cost.
"A+” from the BBB
Arhaus has received an "A+” from the Better Business Bureau, even with 250+ complaints filed with the BBB in the last three years. To be honest, some of those complaints made us laugh - like the customer who said that Arhaus should have sent someone to take measurements in order to make sure that the sofa she had ordered would fit where she wanted to put it. Other complaints were a little easier to empathize with (such as getting furniture that was damaged prior to arrival), but Arhaus responded promptly and appropriately to everything reported to the BBB. And, we get it: when you're paying for high-end furniture, you expect to get what you paid for.
Not always satisfying customers with complaints
Arhaus has a large following of customers that love their artisan furniture and home décor. We have personally purchased both indoor and outdoor products with zero issues. But, that's not always the case. While we identified a high BBB rating, calculated by how a company responds to customer complaints, we also found a body of customers who have had negative experiences associated with mainly delivery issues and extended warranty problems. We've seen this same issue from other furniture stores and Arhaus is not immune.
Beautiful Barstools
If you love beautiful barstools, Arhaus is a good option to consider. Their products are unique and complimentary to a well-designed home interior. Also, these are not flimsy made barstools you'll be replacing in 2 years or struggle assembling yourself. Based on their BBB rating and responses, we can tell this company cares about making the customer happy. However, not every associate you speak with is well trained to appropriately assist if a problems does occur. Set your expectations for a potential rocky effort should you have to raise an issue to management. We've personally had wonderful experiences with multiple delivers of their furniture and décor.
Walmart won't be the first store on your list if you're looking for high-end barstools, but if you're looking for affordable, functional seating, they've got you covered. With thousands of options under $300 - many sold in sets of two or more - you can easily find something that fits your space and budget.
Use the filters to narrow down the inventory
We thought we were impressed the last time we evaluated Walmart, when they carried over 3,000 barstools. This time, their inventory sat at more than 5,200 options. With a selection this large, filtering is a must. You can sort by height, style, material, color, and even how quickly you need delivery. Clicking on a style - like counter-height, swivel, or backless - makes browsing easier, so you're not scrolling endlessly through thousands of listings. And, if you're not sure what you're looking for but you can vaguely picture it in your mind, Walmart has some helpful images in a scroll bar at the top of the page.
Nothing over $300
As we do with every barstool store on our list, we took a look at Walmart's least- and most-expensive options. During this visit, Walmart had two open box backless stools for about $23, originally priced at $69.99. In their regular inventory, there was a portable telescoping stool for $29 - but that's something you'd see on a construction site or campground, not as part of someone's home decor. The first regularly-priced, not open box barstool in Walmart's selection was the Winsome Wood Mona Cushion Saddle Seat for $32.88, and with 325 reviews averaging 4.4 stars, it's a reliable choice. On the high end, we found the Bali & Pari Porsha Mahogany Wood & Seagrass BOHO Counter Stool for $285 - but unfortunately, despite having an "add to cart” button, it came up as out of stock when we clicked to see the more detailed listing. Walmart had quite a few barstool options in the $200 to $250 range, but nothing more expensive than that.
Some highly-rated, affordable barstools on offer
And the best-seller? As far as we could tell, the most-purchased barstools at Walmart are the Howard 30-inch Metal Stools. Sold as a set of 4 at an impressive price of just $95, these barstools have earned an impressive 4.3-star average across nearly 1,000 customer reviews. Plus, they ship for free, and in our area they were available for delivery the very next day. They say that when it comes to good, cheap, and fast, you can only choose two, but Walmart seems to be defying the odds there.
Plenty of details
Walmart gives you plenty of information about every barstool they sell, from at-a-glance dimensions, recommended use location, and whether or not assembly is required, to photos from customers who have submitted reviews and included images of the chairs in their homes. You'll also see what kind of extended protection coverage is available (but, let's be honest: at these prices, wouldn't you just buy a new one if something happened?). And, if you need help assembling your barstools, look for that option in the "Get expert help” section on the right side of the page; it's usually about $59 for a set of 2 stools.
Pay attention to who is fulfilling your order
One detail you should pay attention to: not everything you see on Walmart's site is sold and shipped by Walmart. Some barstools come from third-party marketplace vendors, which means different return policies and shipping timelines. Always check who's fulfilling your order before you buy - looking for the little "save with W+” icon is often an indicator that you won't be dealing with a marketplace seller. That said, Walmart still offers free shipping and returns on most items, and depending on the seller, you may even be able to return your barstools to a Walmart store within 90 days. And, if you prefer, many barstools can be shipped to your local store and picked up in person (but we'd go for the convenience of having it delivered right to our house).
A recommended place to buy budget-friendly barstools
If you want semi-stylish, affordable barstools with easy returns and fast shipping, Walmart is a great option. The huge selection means you'll likely find something that works for your space, and with thousands of reviews to guide your decision, you won't be shopping completely blind. Just double-check if your order is coming from Walmart or a third-party seller, and you should be good to go.
When QVC merged with Home Shopping Network (HSN) in 2017, Frontgate and its related brands - like Grandin Road and Ballard Designs - were part of the package. So, if there's a bit of a "you saw it on TV” vibe as you shop for barstools on this website, now you'll understand why.
About 50 barstools priced from $149 to $1,150
During our most recent visit to this online store, Frontgate had just under 50 barstools to choose from. You're not going to find any bargain basement prices here: on the low end, you'll still be paying $149.97 for the clearance-priced Oakley Bar & Counter Stool, and most barstools land somewhere in the neighborhood of $300. At the highest end of the price spectrum, Frontgate was offering the Bianca Bar & Counter Stool; in the preview, it said that the maximum price was $919.20, but as we played with height, finish, and material, our top-of-the-line barstool wound up costing $1,149. Keep that in mind as you shop: those displayed prices may only be a starting point, and you may want to take advantage of the PayPal financing that Frontgate offers.
Keep an eye on delivery timeframes
There are other details to pay attention to as you shop for barstools here. The first one is shipping. While every chair we looked at came with free shipping, the delivery timeframes could catch you off guard if you're not mindful: on that Bianca model we customized, for instance, our "estimated to ship” date was about 6 weeks away.
Helpful product info plus coordinating items
And, of course, you'll want to make sure you get a barstool that's the right height for where you plan on using it. Frontgate makes that really easy to see, with the current option in bold and an easy dropdown for choosing a different height. The full specs are in the Dimensions dropdown; the only detail we didn't see on every chair we looked at was the user weight capacity, just FYI. You can also scroll down to find coordinating options - maybe you've got a kitchen counter that needs barstools, but you'd also like dining chairs to match.
90-day returns, but shipping things back gets spendy
How about warranties and returns? Frontgate covers everything they sell with a 1-year warranty against manufacturer defects. And, you've got a generous 90-day window to return your barstools for any reason. However, Frontgate will deduct shipping and handling fees from your refund, and some customers have complained that those fees were much steeper than they expected (and they weren't disclosed in advance). You'll also want to check if your barstools can be returned via UPS or if they require a truck/in-home pickup; because barstools are neither the biggest nor the smallest items that Frontgate sells, it's hard to say across the board which type of return you'd be looking at. You can always pop open the live chat on the Frontgate website if you want to double-check.
Some iffy customer feedback
While Frontgate has an "A+” rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, with just 36 complaints filed with the BBB in the last three years, we're not super impressed with the overall feedback and complaints we found for this retailer. From Yelp to Trustpilot, most of the shoppers who've taken the time to leave a comment aren't happy with the quality of the furniture they purchased. More than one person said that they received returned, open box items and not new ones. Orders are delivered much later than promised, and refunds on returns are even more delayed than that.
Reviews on certain barstools are positive
However, on a more positive note, some of the barstools at Frontgate have customer reviews that rate them quite highly. For example, the Angelina Bar & Counter Stool had over 100 ratings that averaged out to a near-perfect 4.9 stars. They come from verified purchasers and some even have real-world photos of the barstools in use. That bumps Frontgate back up a bit in our evaluation, especially compared with retailers that have virtually no reviews on their chairs.
Good enough but not great
All told, we give Frontgate a middle-of-the-road rating of our own. That's higher than our last evaluation of this store, partly because there are other barstool shops that are worse. You won't be shopping at Frontgate if you're looking for the best selection or rock-bottom pricing, but if there's a seating option that catches your eye here and it has high customer ratings, it might not be a totally bad idea to order it from Frontgate. Just keep your expectations in check.
Overstock has been a major player in online discount shopping since 1999, starting as a hub for surplus goods before evolving into a full-scale e-commerce powerhouse. Today, it's known for offering a vast selection of furniture, home decor, and more, all with frequent discounts and free shipping incentives. In 2023, Overstock took a bold step by acquiring the well-known Bed Bath & Beyond brand, reviving it as an online-only retailer. While both brands now operate under Beyond, Inc., Overstock continues to maintain its identity, though you'll notice plenty of crossover in inventory and pricing if you happen to shop at BB&B too.
Barstools from under $25 to nearly $1,400 per chair
You never quite know what you're going to find at Overstock, and when we visited the site recently, we were stunned to find nearly 12,000 options for barstools. Those ranged from some simple, foldable options priced under $25 each, all the way up to the Wharton Bar & Counter Stool set of 8 for "just” $11,044.99 (for a per-chair price of $1,380). Needless to say, whatever your budget and style preference is, you're likely to find more than a few barstools to choose from. And, by the way, if you're comparing Overstock to Bed Bath & Beyond, you'll likely find slightly better prices here. While BB&B sometimes offers spin-the-wheel discounts, Overstock tends to start off with lower prices, making it the more predictable option.
Look at customer reviews when available
Although some barstools on Overstock have no shopper feedback, others have hundreds of reviews. For example, the Rovinj Upholstered Back Swivel Bar Stool, starting at $98.70 and with 9 different color choices, had over 1,000 reviews averaging 4.3 out of 5 stars. When browsing, it's worth checking any available ratings to see how buyers feel about durability, comfort, and ease of assembly.
Make use of the filters to save time
Either way, we still recommend using the filters to narrow down Overstock's barstool inventory. You may have preferences for color or style, and you'll almost certainly need to specify the seat height (counter vs. bar). Overstock also sells barstools in sets, so use the Set Size filter if that makes your shopping experience a little more efficient.
Reputation is slipping
Although parent company Beyond has an "A+” rating from the BBB, Overstock's customer reputation has taken a hit in recent years. While many of the recent complaints filed with the BBB focus on Bed Bath & Beyond, Overstock itself hasn't been immune to criticism. Issues range from damaged furniture upon arrival to orders being canceled after purchase, sometimes while the same item inexplicably remains listed for sale on the website. One particularly frustrated complaint described receiving damaged seating with no replacement options offered - just a partial refund or a return at the customer's expense. If you've been a fan of this retailer in the past, you should be aware that Overstock's customer service may not be as reliable as it once was.
Free shipping but you pay for returns
One of Overstock's biggest perks is free shipping on orders over $49.99, which makes it easy to have your furniture delivered without extra fees. However, returns aren't quite as generous -you have 30 days to initiate a return, but you'll be responsible for shipping costs, which could be pricey for larger orders.
Just average
While Overstock offers an incredible selection of barstools at competitive prices, its customer service issues bring it down in our rankings. If you find a deal that's too good to pass up, it may be worth the risk - but just be prepared for potential hiccups with shipping, product quality, or returns. It's not the worst place to shop for barstools, but it's also not the best. We rate Overstock as "just average” based on selection, pricing, and the overall shopping experience.
For over 75 years, American Signature Furniture has been family-owned and family-led, currently led by third- and fourth-generation descendants of the original founders. With over 120 retail locations nationwide, under the names of American Signature Furniture, Value City Furniture, and Rooms Today, this company carries everything you could need to furnish your home, from sectionals to dining sets and from beds to accent chairs.
Prices range from $44.99 to nearly $600
There's a really solid selection of bar and counter stools at American Signature Furniture: more than 275 during our most recent visit to their online store. Those range in price from $44.99 for the Annie Saddle Stool (marked down 25% from its original price of $59.99) to $599.99 for the Zander Swivel Counter-Height Stool. You'll also find a few pairs of barstools priced at $599.99, but nothing in the inventory here is over $600.
Use the filters but don't expect many customer reviews
Make good use of the filters to find what you're looking for more quickly. You can easily narrow down the barstools by price, color or finish, material, dining height, style, availability, and many other criteria that you might have in mind when picking out your new seating. And, once you have your list, you can sort them by price (high/low or low/high), top rated, or featured. (However, there aren't many reviews that go into the "top rated” determination: we didn't spot any barstools here with more than 10 customer reviews, and most of them had none at all.)
Plenty of details at a glance
Lots of the barstools at American Signature Furniture are designated as quick ship, and all of the ones we could see came with free shipping. As you browse the chairs in your results list, it's also easy to see which ones come with different color options, or if they are available in both counter and dining heights.
Financing and shipping dates when you click
Of course, for the most detailed information, you'll need to click on the barstools that interest you. First off, American Signature Furniture will tell you all of the financing options available; that will usually include their Designer Looks credit card, Pay Later by Synchrony, or Progressive Leasing. Next, you'll see the delivery pricing (typically free, as we mentioned), whether assembly is included, and the anticipated shipping date. Many barstools we liked were designated with a date a little less than a week in the future, coming directly from the manufacturer.
More detailed than some rivals' websites
Next, you'll see all of the color/style options, if there are multiple choices to make. We liked how American Signature Furniture usually showed an image with all of the barstools' dimensions marked out. Plus, the Product Details and Features dropdowns told us everything we needed to know about the materials and care instructions, as well as the exact dimensions and the maximum weight capacity.
Not the most generous on returns
If you change your mind on your barstools, you'll only have 7 days to request a return or exchange. Be aware that you may be charged a 15% restocking fee, and your refund will also have the delivery fees deducted.
BBB's take is a little off
We were a little confused when we found American Signature Furniture's listing with the Better Business Bureau: there was an alert saying that the BBB believed this company was out of business…despite there being updated reviews (and complaints) filed within a few weeks of our review. Even our own local brick-and-mortar location was still open for business, so we're not sure what gave the BBB that impression. The BBB did give this retailer an "A+” rating - surprising given that there were over 900 complaints filed there in the last three years. Most of those complaints described issues with purchases made at in-person locations and not through the website, so we're not overly concerned. They also frequently referred to other stores in the brand family, like Value City Furniture and Rooms Today, not necessarily American Signature Furniture.
Negative feedback from shoppers
Unfortunately, customer sentiment for American Signature Furniture is pretty negative in most places we looked beyond the BBB. Across over 1,200 reviews on Yelp, the company earned a disappointing average of 2.2 stars. "Poor customer service”, "doesn't return phone calls”, "went from being in stock to not available for six months, from one day to the next”, "furniture falls apart”, and "doesn't honor the 5-year warranty” are the types of complaints we read over and over again. (We do want to mention that we weren't offered any kind of extended warranty on the barstools we added to our cart, so that may be a non-issue on your purchase.)
A retailer we'd probably skip
American Signature Furniture earns a lower rating for its selection of barstools - or, more accurately, for its lackluster service and poor reputation, despite having a decent selection of barstools. Even if you find the seating you've been looking for, there's no guarantee that what's in stock on the website will actually be available for delivery, or that it will withstand regular usage if and when it does arrive. We recommend skipping over all of the retailers in the family (American Signature Furniture, Value City Furniture, and Rooms Today) in favor of a more reputable barstool store.
At Home is a well-known name in home decor, with more than 250 stores across 40 states. The company has been around for nearly half a century, on a mission "to enable everyone to make their house a home”.
About 60 barstools to consider
If you need a basic, inexpensive barstool, At Home absolutely has some options for you. At the time of our most recent visit to the online storefront, there were 10 different options priced at $50 and under. Those included the Providence Saddle Backless 29” style, the Hayley, and the Providence Madison (in Cognac only; other colors were $54.99). But, before you get too excited by the selection of 60+ barstools at At Home, be aware that individual color options are listed separately, making the actual variety of styles a little smaller than how it appears at the outset.
Mostly budget-friendly styles
Even on the higher end of At Home's price spectrum, you're still looking at budget-friendly seating choices. The Providence Renata Oversized Faux Leather Barstool was $159.99 when we looked, with several other models priced at $149.99. As you might expect from barstools in the $39.99 to $159.99 range, they're typically metal-framed and not overly upholstered; don't expect to find solid hardwood and luxe finishes here.
Look for shopper ratings on barstools
As you're browsing, you'll be able to see at a glance which barstools are available for in-store pickup, delivery, and/or shipping. You'll also know which models have lots of customer ratings and which aren't as popular; that might be a good way to guide your purchase and avoid any barstools that haven't been a big hit with At Home shoppers in the past. In case you're curious, the most-reviewed barstool we spotted was the Crosby St. Leonardo Adjustable Faux Leather Barstool: 43 ratings averaging 4.7 stars.
Details are on hand if you want them
At Home isn't going to overwhelm you with product details, but they're available if you need them. For example, the Product Overview will let you know the weight limit of the barstool you're looking at, and the Specifications provide the exact dimensions and weight of the chair. You'll also find an option to work with third-party partner Angi, if you need some help putting your barstools together. Plus, on those customer reviews we mentioned? When you look through the reviews in more detail, you sometimes get to see images that shoppers posted of how the barstools work in real life.
Pay attention to extra delivery costs
One downside: At Home's shipping and delivery options aren't the most customer-friendly that we've seen. If the barstool you want happens to be available at a store near you (which should automatically be detected by your browser; you'll have to manually switch to a different location if you don't want the suggested one), you can place your order online and pick it up at no cost, usually within 2 hours or less. You can also pay for same-day delivery from that local store, but the fees for that are "starting at $10”. Standard shipping is where it gets spendy: on that St. Leonardo chair we mentioned, for example, you'd pay $15 (the cost for shipping on any order over $125 with At Home) plus a large item surcharge of $9.99. That's a downside compared with retailers on our list who offer free shipping.
Poor reputation for customer service
How about At Home's reputation? We're not always immediately on alert when we see a company that has a "D-” rating from the Better Business Bureau, especially when there have only been 30 complaints filed with the BBB in the last 12-month period. However, as we considered At Home's feedback from customers in places outside of the BBB, that "D-” they earned started to make more sense. It seems that 99% of the time, the criticism tracks back to At Home's customer service: gift cards aren't refunded when orders are canceled, items never arrive but no help is offered, the company is unreachable when people need help, you get the picture.
Shop somewhere else for barstools
If you have an At Home brick-and-mortar location near you, you could take your chances with ordering your barstools online and going in person if there's an issue. But, we wouldn't count on that being the solution to every problem that might arise here - and customer rants make us think that there's a far greater than 0% chance of something negative happening with your order. At Home's limited variety of barstools isn't vast enough to move the needle for us, and so we recommend that you shop with a higher-ranked retailer on our list.
Jennifer Furniture has been in business for over 50 years, with retail locations in New York and New Jersey. Their selection includes furniture for every room of your home, including barstools and sets for your kitchen, dining room, game room, and beyond.
Not just barstools in the inventory
When you go to the Bar Stools & Counter Height Stools page on the Jennifer Furniture website, you'll see just around 50 options to choose from. Keep in mind, though, that some of the items in the inventory there are more than barstools: you'll find 3-piece bar sets, bar carts, vanity stools, and even tables without chairs. You may find it useful to apply the filters, to sort out the options by color, material, width, product type, or price.
Most chairs are around $300
Speaking of price, the per-barstool cost at Jennifer Furniture ranges from $70.99 to $623.99 per chair. At that low end of the spectrum, this retailer carries the Centiar Upholstered Barstool; for just $8 more per chair, you'll also see the Skempton Fabric Upholstered Wood Counter Height Bar Stool. And, on that higher end, you'll find the Bernhardt Solaria Fabric Bar Stool with Foam Filling + Dune Finish. However, the vast majority of Jennifer Furniture's inventory of barstools is right around the $300 price point.
Discounts are available
If you're planning a major purchase, be sure to look for a pop-up when visiting the Jennifer Furniture website for the first time. We got one that offered a $100 discount on an order over $1,500 if we provided our email address and indicated the room we were trying to spruce up. We also noticed that the live chat said "chat to get discount”, so it might be worth popping that open and asking what they can do on your barstool order too.
Not as detailed as we'd like, plus some typos
You won't be overly impressed by the details on the barstools here. On most of the chairs we looked at, there were just 3-4 photos and no reviews from customers to consider when deciding which one(s) to buy. We even found some typos in the descriptions (like "Llyod” instead of " Lloyd”). Then again, the HTD French Vintage Height Adjustable Stool in Weathered Teak had 10 reviews, all 5 stars, ample photos, and a detailed description - so it may be that Jennifer Furniture's listings are heavily dependent on the brand itself.
You may have to wait for delivery
The delivery/fulfillment timeframes at Jennifer Furniture will also leave you underwhelmed. For example, on an in-stock counter stool, we were still given a delivery window of 2-4 weeks. That barstool was also designated as "drop-ship only” with "full or some assembly” required.
Protection plans are snuck into your order
Be aware that when you add a barstool to your cart, Jennifer Furniture automatically adds a 5-year protection plan. We were able to take it out without any issues, but it was irritating to find an extra charge of nearly $200 in the cart when all we wanted was a barstool.
Exorbitant delivery charges
The unpleasant surprises just kept on rolling in here. When we got to the shipping page, the only option we were given for a $299 barstool was $374.99 "platinum white glove delivery”. Honestly, on a simple chair, do we really need "appointment scheduling, unpacking, assembly, room placement, removal of debris”? We don't think so, but Jennifer Furniture gave no other option. Are you prepared to spend almost $700 for a single barstool, with delivery costs that are much higher than the chair itself?
BBB gives the company an "A+”
On a slightly positive note, we're happy to report that Jennifer Furniture has earned a perfect "A+” grade from the Better Business Bureau, despite the 40+ complaints filed with the BBB over the last three years. That grade is the BBB's way of saying that Jennifer Furniture has done an appropriate job of responding to those complaints.
Customers are rightly upset
However, when we read through the customer reviews, we weren't so thrilled about the nature of the complaints or that the problems happened in the first place. Some ranted about orders in the thousands of dollars that hadn't been delivered even months later, and others said that they were given the runaround when it came to extended warranty coverage. The most concerning ones come from customers who say that Jennifer Furniture shipped the wrong furniture (they have photo proof of what they ordered vs. what was delivered) and the company blamed it on them - going so far as to charge the customers hefty fees for restocking, redelivery, and pickup just to try and get the right items. That negative sentiment towards Jennifer Furniture is echoed elsewhere: inexplicable delays on orders, poor quality, no refunds on furniture that arrives damaged, you get the idea.
Not a retailer we trust
We have a hard time getting excited about shopping for barstools at Jennifer Furniture. The prices on the chairs themselves are relatively competitive, but when you tack on those exorbitant "white glove” shipping costs, it's just not worth it. That's especially true when you look at the lackluster reputation of the company's customer service, and the very real possibility that your expensive order may never actually arrive. The "A+” from the BBB is the only thing stopping Jennifer Furniture from earning our lowest possible rating. Shop for your barstools somewhere else and save yourself the trouble you're likely to find here.
Burke Décor got its start in 2007, when designer Erin Burke found it hard to source building materials, fixtures, and decor items for a post-Hurricane Katrina project in New Orleans. She created Burke Décor to provide "quality, high-style design” for customers who don't necessarily have access to major metro area stores. You'll find everything that this retailer carries to be unique in design and aesthetically different from the mass-produced furniture and home decor found at big-box stores.
Most barstools priced from $250 to $500, with some outliers
There were 119 options in Burke Décor's barstool inventory during our most recent visit, and they really covered a wide range of styles and price points. If all you need is a basic plastic-and-metal barstool, Burke Décor offers several options in sets of 2 that are priced at $199, making it less than $100 per chair. And, at the opposite end of the spectrum, we found the Perpetual Teak Solo Bar Stool by BD Outdoor for a somewhat-staggering $2,520 per chair (but hey, there was a $75 gift card promo with that purchase). But, the majority of the seating options here fall in the $250 to $500 range, and all barstools come with free shipping in the lower 48 states.
You could score a discount
When we visited the Burke Décor site recently, we got a pop-up offer of a 15% discount if we provided our email. There were also some limited-time discount codes at the top of the site, so it's worth keeping an eye out for any savings that might be in place when you're ready to shop.
As you browse the barstools here (preferably after applying filters to narrow down your options), it'll be easy to see which ones are on sale, or are offered as a quick ship item, or that come in multiple colors. You'll need to click on a barstool you like to find out the exact delivery timeframe, though: some of the barstools at Burke Décor may not be ready to ship out for several weeks.
More info, please?
We wish that Burke Décor offered a bit more detail on its barstools. The weight capacity isn't displayed for any of the seating we looked at, and most items had no customer reviews. We prefer having the option to see barstools in real-world environments, and while Burke Décor offers many more stock photos than most of its rivals (from multiple angles and in different settings), we still rely on authentic reviews to guide our decisions as we shop for barstools - and those just aren't available here.
Return policy is average
If you change your mind, Burke Décor has a 30-day return policy - fairly standard in the furniture business. You'll pay a 5% return fee, and you're on the hook for the cost of the return shipping.
Reputation is in a nosedive
Unfortunately, Burke Décor has a reputation that is bottoming out rapidly. To start, the company has earned an "F” from the Better Business Bureau, and the reasons for that grade are concerning: failure to respond to 708 complaints, failure to resolve 104 other complaints, and receiving a total of more than 1,300 complaints. Burke Décor even had an alert on the BBB website saying that, as of January 2024, there was a pattern of complaints alleging that consumers didn't receive their orders or that they were grossly delayed. The BBB alert said that they had met with Burke Décor reps who promised that they were "working on addressing the issues”.
Recent reviews are still bad
Unfortunately, none of the more recent reviews show a reputation that's on the mend. On the contrary, Burke Décor seems to be doing even worse now. There are over 700 1-star reviews on Trustpilot, many coming from customers who placed orders well after Burke Décor was supposedly "working on” their problems. Good luck finding anyone who's happy with the shopping experience here.
Financial woes lead to poor customer experiences
And, here's what we suspect: Burke Décor is involved in serious legal issues that could mean that the company is on the road to bankruptcy. In May of 2024, one of Burke Décor's lenders filed a $6.4 million lawsuit for breach of contract and allegations that the retailer had misrepresented its financial health. Yahoo. Finance even described Burke Décor as being "in the throes of a customer service and order fulfillment crisis”, which is only magnified when seen through the lens of the lender lawsuit.
Too risky for buying barstools (or anything else)
The long and the short of it is that if you buy your barstools through Burke Décor, there's a very high likelihood that your order won't arrive. And, if it does go missing, you'll have a hard time getting your money back, short of filing a dispute with your credit card company. Our advice? Don't bother placing an order with Burke Décor. Save your money and your time, and buy your barstools from any one of the retailers with a much higher ranking on our list.
Of course, price is a great reason to shop for barstools online. You can often take advantage of online-only discounts, free shipping offers, and even financing options that aren't always available in stores. That said, it's important to watch out for hidden costs like high shipping fees or hefty return shipping costs that could increase the final price of your purchase.
Another key factor when buying barstools is making sure that they fit your space properly. The height of the seat should match the counter or bar where you plan to use it. Most barstools come in counter height (24-27 inches) and bar height (28-33 inches), but there are also extra-tall and adjustable-height options. Measuring before you buy can save you the hassle of returns and exchanges.
Quality matters too. Because you can't test barstools in person when shopping online, it's important to read product descriptions carefully. Pay attention to the materials used: solid wood and metal frames tend to be more durable than MDF or particleboard. Upholstered seats can add comfort, but check for stain-resistant fabrics if spills are a concern. Customer reviews and photos can also help you gauge how well a stool holds up over time.
Now that you know what you're looking for, where should you actually go to buy your barstools? Here are five key points to compare when deciding which online retailer should get your hard-earned money:
