Whether you're moving into a new-to-you home and need some seating for the bar in your rec room or for your kitchen counters, or you simply want to update the look and decor of your living spaces, there are literally thousands of options available to you.
Have you already spent too much time driving from one furniture store to another, hoping to find the perfect barstool - but failing? You're not alone: many shoppers find themselves frustrated when trying to get the barstools they want, because even the best local retailers carry a limited selection of styles, price ranges, and brands.

You'll often find Wayfair at the top of our reviews across a wide spectrum of home products. That shouldn't be surprising, for a retailer that sells "a zillion things home" and genuinely carries almost everything imaginable for every type of decor, preference, and style. That's certainly true for barstools: Wayfair's inventory is nearly double our next-highest store's selection!
You might imagine that a store with more than 13,000 options for bar stools would be extremely hard to shop, but Wayfair actually has one of the most streamlined, intuitive websites of any retailer we've ever evaluated. Not only will you find dropdowns for sorting your options, but many of them give you a visual so that you know what you're selecting. Not sure what the difference is between a full back or a half back style? You'll see a clear image before you click the box. Are you looking for something ergonomic, or want to prioritize furniture that's made in the USA? You'll find those filter options too.
Because Wayfair is so popular, you can take advantage of thousands of customer reviews. One of the most highly-rated barstools we spotted was the Russett Bar & Counter Stool from Three Posts. With a 4.5-star average over more than 3700 reviews, this simple-yet-sturdy chair comes in more than 12 colors and 2 counter heights. Wayfair gives you multiple product images, so you can see each chair from several angles and in different settings, making it so much easier to see if it might be a good fit for your home too.
Scroll down through the product page and you'll find a wealth of information. On the chair we mentioned earlier, we were able to learn more about the acacia wood used in its construction, the mortise and tenon joints used to join its pieces, and a couple dozen question-and-answers from customers. For a less-than-$70 chair, we were impressed with how much effort Wayfair put into keeping their customers informed.
One thing we always enjoy doing when we shop at Wayfair is to see the most expensive items they carry among the products we're buying - and even in barstools, Wayfair doesn't disappoint. The Rivoli Bar & Counter Stool is a "bargain" at $10,124.99 - for a set of 2. It even comes in 2 sizes and 4 colors! You might be surprised to find out that the barstool has more than 800 customer reviews - and we enjoyed seeing actual photos showing how the chairs looked in real use. If you're looking for a high-end barstool, you may really like this model.
On either end of the budget spectrum, you'll have a hard time finding another retailer with prices that can beat Wayfair's, including their free shipping on all orders over $49. But, their return policy isn't as competitive, with 30 days to send it back in unused/unassembled condition, and with no retail locations for this store you'll have to spend the cash to ship back your purchase.
And yet, we have found hundreds of customer testimonials describing how Wayfair shipped replacement items for damaged or defective items - without even requiring the return to be received first. Wayfair has a strong commitment to making customers happy, which we appreciate.
Wayfair is absolutely the name to beat when it comes to barstools. You'll find great pricing across thousands of options, an easily-navigated website that makes it almost effortless to find the right furniture for your home, and more than enough information pre-purchase to ensure that your barstools have the sizing, look and feel you've been envisioning. Wayfair earns our highest recommendation.
For more than two decades, Overstock has garnered a reputation for being a fun online shopping destination. Every visit is a surprise, with new brands and items from some of the world's most desired manufacturers - and usually at prices that will make you smile.
At first, the layout of the Counter & Bar Stools product page wasn't as helpful as we wanted. It gives the impression that you're going to have to scroll through your options by Set Size, Material, Style, and Color. But, fear not: if you go a little further down the page, you'll see filtering options on the left side that let you narrow down the choices by seat height, color, style, price, finishes, and much more. Since you don't want to have to click through Overstock's inventory of more than 7000 barstools, those filters will be your biggest time-saver.
Another big help is the ability to mark favorites as you browse. Click the little heart in the upper right corner of any product to save it for later. Overstock is one of the few sites we've found that lets you create your own list for products you mark. So, if you're shopping for barstools for your home, Christmas gifts for the family, and luggage for an upcoming trip, you can easily create three separate lists for your favorite finds.
And, because Overstock has so many active customers, you can see how many other people have favorited the items in your product results list! We found some models of counter stools and barstools that had been marked as a favorite by more than 6,000 people, which might help your shopping process too.
Overstock really excels when it comes to giving you abundant details about every single barstool that interests you. We're not sure there are very many retailers that offer a 3D viewer that lets you see your furniture from every possible angle - but this one does. Most barstools also have photos from multiple perspectives, in case you're really interested in how the backs will look when lined up at the counter, or what profile it'll have when viewed from another part of the house. From thousands of customer reviews to Question/Answer sections to give you more perspective on issues that might crop up during assembly, there should be no mystery whatsoever when considering any of the furniture Overstock sells.
When we visited Overstock most recently, there was a promotional sale on certain barstool styles that got us an extra 20% off. Extra savings come when you spot a pop-up spin-the-wheel discount or free shipping offer. And, Overstock tends to have an always-available, one-time discount in place when you sign up for their email newsletter, usually ranging from 10-15%.
You can also take advantage of the Club O Gold membership, if you anticipate shopping with Overstock on more than one occasion. You'll pay an annual fee of $19.95; in exchange, the company gives you free shipping on every order, regardless of size, plus reward points of 5% on each purchase, access to big sales ahead of the general public, and several other perks throughout the year. In appreciation of first responders, active military or veterans, and teachers, Overstock gives this Club O Gold membership at no cost to anyone in those categories.
Should you need to return your barstools, you'll have 30 days from the delivery date to request a full refund. They'll have to be unopened and unused to qualify, however. Overstock isn't very clear on their policy if you've already assembled your furniture and then decide you don't like it; their wording says you "may get a partial refund" on your purchase price.
That less-than-reassuring return policy is the only reason Overstock earned a less-than-perfect rating from us. In most other regards, this store is a great resource for buying your barstools, from ample selection to an informative, helpful website.
Who doesn't love a good Target run? But, if you're shopping for barstools from work or on your phone at 2AM, using their online store is probably a better option! You'll find plenty of options with this popular retailer.
The main page for Bar & Counter Stools is clean, easy to navigate, and walks you through everything you need to know to get "the right stool for your space". You'll find photos showing how to measure your counters to ensure the right height and a gallery of features and styles to guide your decision-making. But, given that Target has more than 2000 options to choose from, you'll want to use the sorting options to help you go more directly to the furniture that's right for your home. Click through the dropdown boxes on the left side of the page to filter their inventory by category, color, type, height, price, decor style, and more.
And, because Target has so many store locations throughout the country, you've got increased delivery options. Need your barstools today? You can check the boxes to filter the possibilities according to the models that can be ordered online and picked up in store. You can also see just the chairs that are available for 2-day delivery, or even same-day delivery via Shipt.
Unlike the other well-known big-box retailer in our review, Target carries some higher-end options for barstools. If you've got a game room, you might be interested in the Santos Swivel Genuine Leather barstool, made by American Heritage Billiards. Only sold by Target's online store, this chair sells for just under $900. If your style is a little more modern, ZM Home has several options on this end of the price spectrum, like the Recycled Leather Bar Chair and the Art Deco Velvet Bar Chair, both sold as a set of 2. And yes, Target's free standard shipping on orders of $35+ still applies.
Even on the more budget-friendly barstools, you'll still get some sturdy options, from basic backless wood counter stools to chrome-and-white studio stools with adjustable seat height and swivel wheels. And, with Target having such a large customer base, many of the barstools they sell have ample customer reviews you can check out, to see which products have the most positive feedback.
Better yet, Target extends a very generous 365-day return policy that lets you bring your barstool back to a retail store, even if you ordered it online. You can also ship it back to the Target warehouse if there isn't a brick-and-mortar location near you.
With so many attractive options for counter stools, barstools and more - plus all of the conveniences offered, the ability to do one-stop shopping for lots of your household needs, and so on - Target is a terrific choice for a wide range of furniture styles.
Cymax is the furniture store you've probably never heard of. Don't let that lack of name recognition fool you: in business for more than 15 years, this Canada-based company carries more than 75,000 products for home and office.
When you look at the Barstools category on the Cymax site, you'll see more than 4000 results. But, when you start digging through the results, you'll find that they include sectional sofas, armchairs, accent chairs, and many other furniture styles that you'd never use at your bar or counter.
To make it more likely you'll find barstools that are, well, actually barstools, you can use the filters towards the top of the product page. They're fairly inconspicuous - written in small print and a light shade of blue - so it might take you a moment to locate them. These filters let you better sort through the products on the Cymax site by price, style, height and back style, with additional criteria under the More Filters dropdown.
After you've narrowed down the possibilities to an easier-to-shop list of results, you can see at a glance which products have received high marks from other shoppers. For example, the Hillsdale Monae 26" Upholstered Swivel Counter Stool had more than 2590 brand reviews at the time of our most recent visit - though you should note that those numerous reviews were for all of the Hillsdale products in the Cymax catalog. (The specific chair hadn't been reviewed by customers.)
When you've clicked on a chair you like, you'll have easy access to lots of details: finish, material, description, and more. This was one of the few stores that we saw that also specified the weight capacity on many of the barstools they carried, if that's a potential issue for you or your guests.
We also like that every barstool has a delivery estimate. If you're in a hurry to get your furniture delivered, it's nice to know which ones might get there quickly. You'll find that info right below the product picture and above the price. And, speaking of price, Cymax tends to be in the middle of the pack: most of what they carry is listed as being "on sale", but we did find lower prices on other sites for several of the barstools we liked.
Cymax's return policy is just average, at 30 days from the date of delivery. They do not allow returns on assembled or partially-assembled furniture, so your only option is if your barstools are still in brand-new condition and can be returned in its original packaging. Restocking fees of up to 25% may also be charged, depending on the manufacturer of the furniture you buy.
On the other hand, Cymax has an impressive "A+" rating from the Better Business Bureau. Also, over more than 1000 customer ratings, this company has an average score of 4.4 out of 5 stars, with frequent compliments regarding Cymax's fast shipping, friendly customer service representatives, and responsiveness to any issues that came up.
Cymax also offers free shipping on most orders, and only charges sales tax to residents of VA and Canada, which may also save you money compared to their rival retailers.
Cymax is a trustworthy place to buy your barstools, and there are definitely some things to like about the store. A stronger return policy and a little more organization to the website would boost this retailer even further up in our ratings, so we look forward to more good things from Cymax in the future.
When you first start shopping for your barstools at Walmart, you might feel a little overwhelmed. Much like walking the aisles at your nearest brick-and-mortar location, you'll soon see that your options are almost too numerous. Ladder back? Saddle seat? Wood or chrome/vinyl? Fortunately, the online Walmart store gives you the advantage of sorting through their more than 1000 counter stools and barstools with just a few clicks.
You'll use the options on the left side of the page to narrow down your choices:
Once you've got your list narrowed down - or even from the main barstools page - you can further refine the results according to price, top brands, store availability, and more. That means you won't have to spend your time digging through furniture styles that aren't a good fit for your needs.
Of course, this being Walmart, you're not going to find any high-end pieces here. Everything offered is under $300, so if you're looking for an ultra-luxe upgrade to your decor, this isn't the store for you. On the other hand, if budget is a concern and you're looking for a great selection, you'll find a nice range of counter stools and barstools on the Walmart online store.
One of the advantages of shopping with a well-known retailer is the availability of customer reviews. For example, the TMS Avery Adjustable-Height Bar Stool, sold in a set of 3, had more than 700 ratings at the time of our most recent visit. With 2-day delivery, multiple color options, and an average of 4 out of 5 stars, it's easy to see why that model of barstools is so popular.
If you're shopping at Walmart, you'll want to keep an eye on who will be fulfilling your order. Not sure what that means? Walmart, like many big-box retailers, often partners with smaller companies to offer you a wider range of products. So, as you scroll through the various barstools shown in their online store, you'll see "Sold & shipped by" under the price of many items. This means that while your order will be placed through the Walmart site, your barstools will be sent to you from a third-party company.
Why does that matter? Walmart's refund/return policies won't apply in these cases. You'll need to read the fine print and find out what the fulfillment company offers in that regard, because it may not be in your favor. You may still be able to make returns to a local Walmart store, but the terms depend on the individual sellers. Walmart itself doesn't specify a return timeframe, but they do say you can either return items in-store or ship them back at no cost to you - just sign into your account and print out the return label.
Walmart offers a nice selection of barstools at reasonable prices. And, with so many stores throughout the country plus free returns via mail on online orders, this big-box retailer makes it easy to take your furniture back if it doesn't meet your expectations - though that may vary if you purchase from a third-party marketplace seller through the Walmart site.
Sears is one of the longest-lasting names in the home furnishings market. Although they no longer have a retail location in practically every mall in America, this retailer offers plenty of barstools in their online store. Ranging in price from under $50 to the mid-$1500s, you'll find brands like Furniture of America, Holland Bar Stool, Bowery Hill, and many others.
To make it easier to find the kind of counter or barstool you need, we suggest using the filtering options on the left side of the page. You may already have an idea of the perfect style for your home - maybe it's important to have a swivel seat, or a specific height, and so on. Click on the dropdowns to only see the kinds of chairs that are right for you; these include Material, Seat Style, Finish, User Ratings, and Current Offers.
As you find chairs that catch your interest, you can easily click on "Add to compare" to keep a running list of your favorite options. Sears also makes it easy to see the average of any available customer reviews, any promotions currently in place.
Sears doesn't give you a lot of detail on the barstools they carry. Some of the furniture we considered only had one small image for us to consider, making it hard to see it from multiple angles. You can click to get more specifics like the finish, materials, and seat height/depth, as you scroll through individual products' available info.
You might get a pop-up discount offer when you visit the Sears site. For example, we got a savings of $5 on $50 or more or $35 on $300 or more if we entered our email.
Sears offers free shipping on all orders of $59 and above. That covers most of the barstools in their online inventory, so your purchase will probably come with no-cost delivery.
One thing that might give you some pause when shopping at Sears: the company filed for bankruptcy in late 2018. While the business continues to operate "with court supervision", that could leave customers in the lurch if the store shuts down completely. In other words, it's hard to make a return if the doors have been closed.
Speaking of returns, Sears' policy isn't the most impressive: you'll only have 30 days from the day your barstools were delivered to send them back or take them to a retail location near you.. If you're part of the Sears Shop Your Way rewards program, you'll get an extension to a total of 45 days for your return.
Another factor to consider when shopping at Sears is that they use a Marketplace structure for some of the furniture they carry. That means that not everything you buy on the Sears website is going to be fulfilled by Sears itself - though they back all of their marketplace sales by guaranteeing they'll either help you resolve any problems or refund the cost of your order.
Of course, you can easily use the three tabs at the top of the Bar Stools page to show only results offered by Sears, just those that can be ordered online and picked up in-store, or full results including Marketplace sellers. It really just depends on your own preferences; there's nothing inherently bad about using third-party partners that Sears has vetted and approved as a seller on their online store.
Overall, Sears has a nice selection of barstools and a long history as a nationwide retailer. But, because of the company's financial status, which could leave customers hanging at any time, we can't give Sears our highest recommendation at this time.
One Way Furniture lets you buy directly from the manufacturer, offering savings of up to 70% over traditional retailers' prices. The company has more than 300 warehouses nationwide, enabling them to deliver quickly no matter where you live. And, most of the barstools offered on the site come with free shipping and no sales tax, giving you extra savings. Since our last evaluation of this company, they seem to have eliminated the $8.99 processing fee tacked onto every order, making the free shipping and no sales tax a legitimate perk that is no longer eliminated by having extra charges.
Unfortunately, once you've searched for "Bar Stools", you'll get a lengthy list of matching products - more than 1300 during our most recent visit to the site - and not many useful ways to narrow down your options. You can sort all of them by price, most popular, name and newest products, but there's no way to filter out the ones that clearly don't match what you need (e.g. only backless stools). That means you'll either need to get very specific with your search terms - walnut backless saddle stool, for instance - and hope that you get lucky with the results, or you'll be spending a lot of time scrolling through the options until you (maybe) spot one that's the right height, style, and so forth. That's definitely not as convenient and easy to use as our higher-rated retailers.
This store also doesn't compete when it comes to their return policy. You only have 15 days from delivery to make a return request, and that doesn't apply if you've already assembled your barstools. You'll have to pay for the return shipping costs, and they'll deduct any free shipping from the amount of your return. On top of that, One Way Furniture takes a restocking fee of 15%. If you buy a lower-priced barstool, it's probably cheaper to just keep it than to try and return it!
On a more positive note, One Way Furniture has a solid reputation with the Better Business Bureau, as demonstrated by the BBB's "A+" rating of the company. You can also see a decent amount of information on each barstool you click on, from finish and seat height to a description of the style of the furniture itself. However, as you look at your results, you can't see at a glance what the height of the chair is, leaving you to click on every single piece of furniture you might like, just to determine if it could fit under your counter.
While we appreciate that One Way Furniture has that positive reputation, the frustrating experience of trying to use their online storefront to find the barstools we needed was enough to keep this retailer as one of the lower-ranked companies in our review. You're likely to save time and money by shopping with another store, and you'll probably get a better return policy too.
At Home calls itself "the home of endless possibilities" as a decor superstore. With hundreds of retail locations throughout the US, chances are good that you're already familiar with At Home's no-frills approach to rugs, furniture and more.
The selection of barstools is fairly limited with At Home: around 200 to choose from. The online store doesn't have much in the way of navigation tools, either. You can only filter by height, price range, and new arrivals. So, if you know you want a chair made of wood, you'll have to visually browse all of the options to find the ones that match.
At Home's Insider Perks program can get you extra savings. If you sign up for this free membership, you'll get a 10% discount on your next purchase, plus additional offers throughout the year (including a birthday bonus). Expect to get emails with new products, decorating tips and tricks, and any special sales and markdowns.
At Home's return policy lets you get a refund within 60 days of your purchase if your items are unused and in the original packaging. The retailer doesn't specify if you can return online purchases to one of their brick-and-mortar locations. Their return policy also states that At Home doesn't offer any price matching, exchanges, or price adjustments if your items go on sale after your order is placed.
This store definitely seems more focused on their retail shoppers, not their online customers. If you need to contact At Home, your options are to use the form on their website or reach out to your nearest local store: there's no toll-free number or live chat you can use to get help when placing an order or to ask any questions you may have.
To top that off, out of the several dozen barstools that interested us, we didn't find a single one that was available to order online. It felt like the purpose of At Home's online store was to show you what they carry in-store, instead of offering customers the convenience of buying over the internet. That makes it hard to compare this retailer with the other stores in our review, who have no problem selling their entire array of barstools and counter stools with just a few clicks of the mouse.
For that reason, At Home comes up short when looking at stores offering barstools. If you happen to live near one of their retail stores, you can use the site to get an idea of what to expect. But, if you want the convenience of ordering online, you'll need to go with a different store to buy your barstools.
At first glance, Barstool Direct looks like it could be a good option when shopping for counter stools and barstools. This retailer offers some customer-friendly perks like free shipping on every order and a "price beat" guarantee. You might get extra savings from pop-ups as you visit the Barstool Direct site. During our most recent shopping trip there, we got a 10% discount code if we signed up for their email list. Ironically, at the bottom of the site, there was a permanent offer of a 12% discount for signing up, so it could be anyone's guess which discount you'd actually get.
Barstool Direct carries a decent range of brands, with nearly 20 to choose from, and an inventory of just over 400 models and styles. On the main page of the site, there's a helpful guide to measuring your counter/bar height to get the right chair height to match.
This online store isn't as easy to use as some of its competitors' sites. To find the kind of barstool you're looking for, you'll have to start by clicking on the category - Wooden, Metal, Counter, Bar, etc. - and then select an attribute like features or finish. We would prefer a way to sort everything at the same time, rather than having to click through those options.
You might not get much detail when you click on a barstool that interests you. We were able to see basic dimensions, item weight, and processing time frame (6 weeks on some of the ones we considered!), but nothing about materials used, whether assembly would be required, etc. That seems to depend on the manufacturer/brand - some barstools had that information, while others lacked a description and had a very small product image.
In our last review of Barstool Direct, we found several areas of concern - and we were hoping to see positive changes since that time. Unfortunately, this company's reputation has actually gotten worse. The Better Business Bureau revoked the accreditation of Barstool Direct's parent company, Peazz, in mid-2019 for failing to respond promptly and professionally to customer complaints.
As we looked through dozens of negative reviews from unhappy shoppers, it was easy to see a pattern: credit cards charged for items that hadn't shipped, no responses when requesting a return, lack of response from customer representatives, and many other problems. That definitely doesn't sound like the company is making good on their "Peace of Mind Guarantee" for customer satisfaction. We also found that Barstool Direct makes it hard to get a refund with their 30-day return policy, often failing to respond to customers within that 1-month period.
With so many retailers of barstools who go to great lengths to keep their customers happy, there's just no good reason to shop with Barstool Direct. We encourage you to consider the higher-rated stores in our review.
Fortunately, there's an easy solution to the problem: buying barstools online. There's no easier way to compare all of the possibilities, leading you to the furniture that's exactly the right color, height and price with just a few clicks. Many of the retailers offering barstools have helpful tools on their site that can guide you through the process of taking measurements to ensure the best fit.
Best of all, these online stores usually offer customer-friendly perks like free delivery, generous return policies, and rewards programs that can save you money over their already-competitive prices. Why spend every weekend hoping to find your barstools locally - and then wondering how you'll fit them in your car for the drive home - when you can get exactly what you want shipped right to your front door?
With so many online stores offering barstools, how can you tell which one should get your business? Not all retailers are created equal, so use these criteria as a starting point for your shopping experience:
