Think you need to shop at a specialty retailer in order to get the lowest price and best selection of batteries? Think again. When it comes to having everything, you could need to power your TV, remote control car, cell phone or computer, Walmart leads the pack. In fact, you might be hard-pressed to find a battery that this store doesn't carry. (We tried!)
Because Walmart's inventory is seemingly endless, your best bet is to start by typing the kind of battery you need in the search bar. Your results list can then be refined by price, brands, in-store availability and more, to help you drill down just to what you need. And, because so many people shop for batteries at Walmart, you can take advantage of hundreds (if not thousands) of customer reviews on the products you need.
In comparing batteries across stores, we chose a Duracell 20-pack of basic AA batteries and a replacement battery for a Moto G4 Play cell phone. Did Walmart fare well against its rivals? While they didn't have the exact same 20-pack we considered, their 24-pack was reasonably priced at $16.24. We were also happy to find an OEM replacement battery for the phone, also with a competitive price of $10.99 with free shipping. However, the latter was on offer by a third-party seller, so Walmart's return policies wouldn't apply.
What are those return policies? Simply put, they're the most generous of any online battery store we've found: 90 days, by mail or in-store, no exceptions (that we could find). Keep in mind, as we said, that any non-Walmart sellers (i.e. marketplace vendors with permission to offer their products on the Walmart website) have their own return policies - so it might be worth your time to make sure any batteries you purchase are fulfilled specifically by Walmart itself.
Need your batteries in a hurry? You've got options. If there's a Walmart near you, order online for in-store pickup. Or, place an order of at least $35: most of the batteries we found were eligible for next-day delivery with a minimum order of that amount, and the majority of batteries that didn't qualify for free next-day shipping still came with free 2-day delivery (for the same minimum $35 order). Given how much Walmart carries, it shouldn't be hard to meet that threshold - just throw in some toilet paper, shampoo or dog food along with your batteries and you're good to go.
At the end of the day, there's no need to shop for batteries at a specialty store when you can get them - quickly and for less money - at Walmart. Their selection is unmatched, even by the top batteries-only stores, their return policy is top-notch, and with free and fast shipping on most orders, you can get exactly what you need (and maybe a few things you just happen to want, too). Walmart is our highest-rated online battery store.
Sure, you can stop by your local supermarket, gas station or electronics store and snag a pack of AAAs for the remote, but it's almost never going to be at the best possible price. And, if you need something specialized, like a replacement battery for a boat or a power tool, the chances of finding exactly what you need - without having to drive to many different stores - are pretty slim.
Lucky for all of us, getting the right-sized battery for every application - key fobs, home security systems, remote control toys, and the basics around the home - is as simple as going online. Many online battery retailers offer a much bigger variety than anything you'll find locally, with brands you know like Energizer and Duracell, along with store-brand options that can save you a lot of money for the same amount of power and longevity.
Some stores even offer a discount if you opt into their automatic delivery program, so that you're never left empty-handed when the video game remotes run out of juice or the smoke detector starts chirping.
As you consider the various online battery stores out there, how can you tell which one should get your business? Here are several criteria you can keep in mind as you shop:
