Boost Your BBQ is a small family-run business based out of northwestern Pennsylvania. Their online barbecue supply store is dedicated to empowering individuals to take their BBQ passion to new heights. With roots as enthusiastic backyard competition BBQ cooks, they have a deep-seated love for outdoor cooking (and friendly contests). They decided to launch their store to provide not only competition cooks but also everyday grilling fans with access to the top-quality rubs, sauces, tools, and accessories that have fueled their own BBQ obsession. With a commitment to offering great products at great prices, Boost Your BBQ aims to make the joy of barbecue accessible to all.
First impressions aren't great
At first, we weren't sure that Boost Your BBQ is doing much business: there were no reviews of the BBQ sauce club, and hardly any for the a la carte rubs and sauces in the online store. The site's copyright was out of date by a year, and we wondered if anyone was even "home”.
Chat is live and they're open for business
But, fortunately, when we clicked the Chat button (admittedly with low expectations), we got a response within just a few minutes. We were able to confirm that yes, Boost Your BBQ is still in business. And, we were able to ask about repeats (if you should expect to get the same thing as your subscription carries on): the answer is "only if a long period of time passes”. So, you can rest assured that the variety of rubs and sauces you'll get in this club won't start to feel like a broken record.
2 rubs and a sauce in each box
So, what will you get from this BBQ sauce club? Each delivery has two competition-level BBQ rubs and one sauce. You might get Heath Riles Pecan Rub and Killer Hogs A.P. Rub with a bottle of Blues Hog Original BBQ sauce, or flavors from Sucklebusters, Oakridge BBQ, Plowboys BBQ, Meat Church, and many others.
Get deliveries monthly, quarterly, or every 6 months
The setup at Boost Your BBQ is a little different than some of the clubs we evaluated. Like most BBQ sauce clubs, you can subscribe to monthly deliveries and cancel at any time. They also have a 3- and 6-month plan, but rather than shipping you new rubs and sauces every month for those lengths of time, your deliveries will come every 3 months or every 6 months. (We wouldn't want you getting your hopes and your tastebuds up after your first delivery and then have to wait another 3 or 6 months!)
You'll pay around $40 per box
How about the cost? If you subscribe on the month-to-month plan, you'll pay $33.24 (a 5% discount over the regular price of $34.99 for the every-3-months and every-6-months subscription). Each box has a shipping fee of $7.99, bringing your total price to just over $40. That's a slight savings over the $50+ retail value promised with each delivery, and it does save you a trip to the store.
Not really worth what you'll spend
Is it worth it? Again, with no reviews on the Boost Your BBQ site itself, this sauce club doesn't exactly stand out. We were able to find a few places where the company has made its BBQ sauce subscription available outside of its own website, and the feedback was still not what we'd call abundant. While some subscribers have enjoyed getting it as a gift for loved ones or even for themselves, at least one person said that they were underwhelmed by the contents of the box. They pointed out that there was no value-add (like recipes, history of the sauce/rub makers), and it was just three things "they could have grabbed from the sale shelf at their Trader Joe's”. Not exactly a glowing review.
Room for improvement
As much as we enjoy supporting small businesses, Boost Your BBQ has some room to improve when it comes to their BBQ sauce club. It's more expensive than many of the rivals we've reviewed, without any corresponding value that we can see. You might do better shopping for individual rubs and sauces from the main store, to pick flavors and makers that you can't find near you. But, for a really robust, well-established BBQ sauce club, you'll want to look at the higher-ranked options on our list.
Barbecue sauce and rubs have earned a revered status in culinary culture, captivating taste buds with their rich, complex flavors and enhancing the succulence of grilled or smoked meats. And when it comes to flavors, the possibilities are vast.
Traditional BBQ sauces often feature a tomato or vinegar base, infused with a myriad of spices such as garlic, onion, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Some variations may lean towards the sweeter side with added honey or brown sugar, while others deliver a fiery intensity with the inclusion of chili peppers or hot sauce.
As for BBQ rubs, they are a blend of dry spices and herbs meticulously crafted to enhance the flavor and texture of meats. Common ingredients include salt, black pepper, cumin, chili powder, and brown sugar, but the beauty of rubs lies in their versatility, allowing grillmasters to experiment to their hearts' delight.
Now, let's explore the regional nuances of BBQ sauces, each offering a distinct taste of American barbecue tradition. In the Carolinas, vinegar-based sauces reign supreme, imparting a tangy, acidic punch to smoked pork. Meanwhile, in Kansas City, tomato-based sauces take center stage, balancing sweet and tangy flavors that pair perfectly with ribs and brisket. In Texas, BBQ aficionados swear by thick, peppery sauces that let the smoky flavor of the meat shine through, while in Memphis, a dry rub is often preferred, allowing the quality of the meat to speak for itself.
But, we all know that the options for truly unique BBQ sauces and rubs are a little limited when we visit our local supermarket. Wouldn't it be amazing if the nation's best flavors and newest selections could be delivered right to your doorstep?
Well, you're in luck. BBQ sauce clubs bring you the best of Texas, KC, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and beyond, so you'll never be disappointed by the grocery store condiment aisle ever again. Whether you send it as a gift to a lucky recipient or you keep the joy all to yourself, a BBQ sauce club lets you try flavors you probably won't find near you.
These clubs can usually be set up to be delivered for three months up to a year, and the best ones come with fun extras like recipes, grilling tips, and fun facts about the makers behind each sauce and rub.
