What is the Best Bookkeeping Service?  Are you a small business owner juggling countless tasks? Or perhaps you're a freelancer struggling to keep your finances organized? If tracking expenses, managing invoices, and preparing for tax season feels overwhelming, a professional bookkeeping service might be exactly what you need. These services can transform financial chaos into clear, organized records and giving you back precious time to focus on what matters most: growing your business.
You're in good hands with Pilot, who claim the title of largest startup and small business accounting firm in the US. With a team of over 250 US-based experts (including accountants, CFOs, and tax specialists), they'll handle your bookkeeping with precision while you focus on growing your business. Whether you're a two-person startup or a hundred-person team, they've got you covered - in fact, they've helped companies like OpenAI, Airtable, and Scale grow from their earliest days. And since they use QuickBooks Online, you'll have the freedom to work with any tax preparer, financial professional, or venture capitalist you choose. (Plus, if you ever decide to part ways, your data goes with you in a format that's immediately useful.)
You get a personal team of expert bookkeepers, not just another software tool
Pilot offers you more than just automated bookkeeping. Their team takes time to understand your business inside and out, working closely with you to ensure your books are squeaky-clean and support informed decision-making. Through their user-friendly portal, you'll have clear, organized communication with your bookkeeper and quick access to timely responses.
The onboarding process trades consistency for thoroughness
When you sign up, you'll pay a one-time onboarding fee equal to one month of bookkeeping. During this phase, your dedicated team connects to your financial data sources and establishes a tailored approach to your bookkeeping needs. While some users note the process involves multiple hand-offs that can feel inconsistent, others appreciate how thorough the setup is - and most agree that once you're matched with your long-term bookkeeper, everything runs smoothly.
Pricing model that scales with your business using accrual-based bookkeeping
Your monthly pricing is determined by your expense volume, with a slider that lets you estimate costs from $0 up to $200,000. Unlike basic cash-based bookkeeping that only tracks when money moves in and out of accounts, Pilot uses accrual-based bookkeeping from day one: recording when money is earned or owed. This more sophisticated approach means no painful transitions as your business grows. For a business with $50,000 in monthly expenses as an example, here are the options:
Looking for full-service financial support?
While Pilot's core focus is bookkeeping, they also offer CFO services at three tiers to help grow your business. Their Basic CFO plan at $1,750/month provides business performance analysis, while the Essential tier ($3,150/month) helps initiate strategic projects. For companies needing deep financial leadership, their Custom plan ($5,250/month) offers comprehensive CFO integration.
Tax services that scale with your needs
On the tax front, you've got options starting at $750/year for small businesses spending under $500k annually, which covers your federal and state filings. Their Essentials plan at $2,450/year adds Delaware Franchise tax filing and 1099-NEC support, while their Standard plan ($5,400/year) increases your 1099-NEC filing capacity and is perfect for growing or profitable businesses of any type.
A consistently responsive, high-rated service that users love
Pilot earns impressive ratings averaging between 4.0 and 4.9 across independent review platforms, with clients particularly praising their responsive, professional team. As one finance professional noted, "Whenever I post questions in our Pilot portal, I hear back quickly, typically within one day".
Combines powerful automation with human expertise
Pilot seamlessly integrates with dozens of tools and financial institutions, automatically categorizing items and identifying new vendors. One client highlighted how Pilot's automation "always reminds us what we should do for the next step and the deadline for the tasks", helping you stay on top of your financial responsibilities without the stress. You can also expect a high level of human attention to be paid to your books. According to one particularly glowing review, their team's expertise shines through in handling "very novel & sometimes tricky situations in bookkeeping/accounting." Pilot's online portal gets its flowers for being user-friendly and presenting financials more effectively than QuickBooks.
Our highest recommendation for any business that's ready to invest in growth
If you're serious about building a business that scales, Pilot is our top recommendation for bookkeeping services. Their expert team delivers accrual-based bookkeeping from day one, backed by QuickBooks integration and excellent support. While the onboarding process isn't perfect, the quality of service more than makes up for it - especially at a competitive starting price of $259/month for small businesses. What truly sets Pilot apart is its ability to grow with you, offering everything from basic bookkeeping to comprehensive CFO services. (And with clients like OpenAI and Airtable, they've proven they can handle that journey.) Whether you're a small startup or a scaling business, Pilot offers the sophisticated financial partnership you need.
Looking for a modern solution to manage your business finances? Fincent brings you the best of both worlds - cutting-edge AI technology and human expertise - all on one comprehensive platform. As a fast-growing fintech startup founded in 2020 with about 60 employees, they've reimagined financial services for the digital age, offering you everything from smart bookkeeping and banking to tax preparation and budgeting tools. Their real-time dashboard puts all your financial data at your fingertips, while their dedicated team ensures you get the personal attention your business deserves.
Starts at $499/month
Your monthly fee with Fincent is based on your business expenses - the more transactions you have, the more work your dedicated bookkeeping team needs to handle. They'll calculate your 3-month average expenses on the 20th of each month to determine your tier, and you'll get a heads-up if there are any changes. If your expenses are between $25 to $50k, here's what you can expect to pay:
Add-ons for specialized needs
Need extra help with your finances? You can add services like catch-up bookkeeping (from $299/month), tax filing (from $125/month), or project tracking (from $150/month). For additional bookkeeper support beyond your plan's hours, it's $75 per hour.
A well-designed platform backed by human expertise
You'll find Fincent delivers a refreshingly human touch to bookkeeping, earning an impressive 4.7-star average rating from users. The platform combines smart technology with dedicated bookkeepers who take time to understand your business - they'll ask about recurring payments, learn your vendors, and become what one user described as "an extension of my company". The interface is streamlined and functional, with secure Plaid integration for your financial institutions, and you'll get your books within 3-5 days after month-end.
Support that goes above and beyond expectations
What really sets Fincent apart is their proactive support team. One user praises how the bookkeepers are "curious, respectful, and hold [you] accountable". The team is always ready to help, making it easy to review questionable transactions and understand your company's financial position. According to one reviewer, Fincent's bookkeepers even maintain a backup QuickBooks account for you - a thoughtful touch that gives you extra security and flexibility should you need to transfer to a different platform.
Impressive case studies
Want to see some real financial glow-ups? We recommend checking out Fincent's case studies on their website. Take Black Nymph Art, for example - they transformed their creative business with Fincent's bookkeeping services by cutting manual financial tasks by 80% and speeding up reporting by 20x. Or look at PhysioCare Wellness, where Dr. Kwab saved over 100 hours of work while getting crystal-clear visibility into his clinic's finances. Both businesses went from struggling with financial chaos to having complete control over their books, thanks to Fincent's combination of smart automation and hands-on expertise. (Now that's what we call a financial Cinderella story.)
High marks for reliability and transparency
Fincent earns a strong rating for delivering exceptional bookkeeping services that combine cutting-edge AI with genuine human expertise. Their dedicated team's proactive approach, comprehensive feature set, and commitment to transparency make them a trustworthy choice for midsize to large businesses. However, with plans starting at $499/month, they're not the most budget-friendly option for small businesses or solopreneurs. If you can justify the investment, you'll get a bookkeeping partner that prioritizes accuracy and client success over quick fixes - and maintains a backup of your books so you're never locked in. (That's the kind of financial partner we love to see.)
Bookkeeper positions itself as your dedicated small business partner, bringing over 37 years of experience to the table. While they're a relatively small operation with under 50 employees, that may be an advantage - you'll get a team that treats your business interests as their own, with reasonable pricing. In addition to bookkeeping, Bookkeeper offers services including accounting, payroll, and tax planning.
All plans include dedicated bookkeeping
Bookkeeper has three distinct service tiers, which you can find by navigating to their "Pricing" page, then clicking "Learn More" under the description of their bookkeeping services. All three tiers are billed monthly and include essential features like dedicated bookkeeping support (surprisingly not always a given), reconciliations, balance sheets, monthly financial statements, and a secure online portal. Here's what you can expect with those three plans:
If your business grows beyond $1M in revenue, custom plan and pricing options are available.
Tax and payroll cost extra
While Bookkeeper's core bookkeeping services are robust, tax returns, payroll, invoicing, tax planning, cleanup services, 1099 processing, and QuickBooks services all come at additional costs. Their Tax plan starts at $400/month, while Payroll starts at $135/month.
Customer support has its ups and downs
When you're just getting started with Bookkeeper, you might notice their pre-sales support is a bit old-school: no live chat, just contact forms and discovery calls. However, if you reach out during business hours, you'll get a prompt response. We submitted an inquiry about book cleaning costs via their contact form after-hours, and had received a reply by early the next morning. Once you're actually a client, you'll get access to their chat support system, making it even easier to get help when you need it. (Their answer to our book cleaning question: they're "more than happy" to clean up your books in addition to maintaining them, but the cost is variable and should be discussed via call.)
Exceptional service makes them feel like part of your team
Bookkeeper stands head and shoulders above many bookkeeping service competitors with their consistently exceptional 4.9-star average across client reviews. While some corporate accounting firms leave you waiting days (or even weeks) for a callback, Bookkeeper's dedicated account managers are responsive and hands-on from day one. Former clients of larger, more impersonal services frequently note how Bookkeeper's team feels like an extension of their own business, handling everything from basic bookkeeping to complex multi-state payroll with expertise. This bespoke approach has earned them fierce loyalty, with many clients expanding beyond business services to trust Bookkeeper with their personal accounting needs as well.
Bookkeeper delivers top-tier personalized service that's worth the investment
While Bookkeeper's pricing ($399 to $879/month) isn't the lowest in the market, they excel where it matters most: delivering highly personalized service backed by remarkable expertise. Their consistently stellar reviews and long-term client relationships speak volumes about their ability to function as a true extension of your business team. If you're seeking a bookkeeping service that combines the efficiency of modern tools with the personal touch of a dedicated in-house accountant, Bookkeeper is an excellent choice, particularly for small businesses generating up to $1M in annual revenue who value responsive, hands-on support over rock-bottom pricing.
While most bookkeeping services we've reviewed are backed by venture capital and many years of experience, Aced Accounting is a fresh face in the industry - but don't let that deter you. Founded by CPA Ethan Willse (certified in 2020), this boutique firm offers the same comprehensive services as the big players, but with an emphasis on transparent pricing and a modern tech stack. With just over 100 happy customers so far, they're small but growing. And, as a CPA-managed accounting firm (not solely a bookkeeping firm), they can offer you accounting advice and strategy. The question is: could this newcomer be the perfect fit for your business?
Specialized guidance for content creators
If you're a content creator, startup founder, construction contractor, restaurant owner, a real estate investor, or you own a cleaning service, you'll find specialized expertise at Aced Accounting. Your dedicated team will help you understand your business' performance through detailed monthly reports, improve your cash flow with faster payment collection, and make data-driven decisions with real-time financials. You'll get valuable insights like industry benchmarking, tax compliance guidance, and custom budgeting tools - all while having access to specialists who understand your specific industry (including a dedicated accountant for content creators).
Transparent pricing is a standout feature
We appreciate Aced Accounting's straightforward, no-contract monthly billing structure - a valuable find in an industry plagued by hidden fees and confusing payment schemes. As far as we can discern, the pricing corresponds exactly to what you'll pay. (However, fees may apply if you go over your transaction limit.) Here's what you can expect from each plan:
Getting started is hassle-free
Each tier includes valuable onboarding perks like free bookkeeping cleanup for the current year, comprehensive setup assistance, and ongoing CPA guidance. You'll also get regular touch-base meetings that increase in frequency as you move up the tiers, ensuring you're always in the loop.
Personal tax prep from $120, Business from $300
Many bookkeeping services also provide tax prep services as add-ons, and Aced Accounting is no different. Business tax preparation begins at $300, while personal tax preparation begins at just $120. Simply fill out their intake form and you'll receive access to their client portal within one business day.
Start a US business from overseas
If you're an international entrepreneur eyeing the US market, Aced Accounting specializes in helping you establish your LLC from abroad. Their international business expert, Felipe Bulnes, brings particular expertise in Latin American markets (and potentially bilingual support). Although the $199 to $299 price tag is certainly more expensive than the free LLC formation offered by many services, it comes with perks you won't necessarily get elsewhere. You'll receive a US address, phone number, EIN application and certificate, optional mail forwarding, and more. They even cover your LLC registration fee and first year's registered agent service.
Impressive value despite limited track record
Aced Accounting is still establishing its market presence. Despite this being the second time we've reviewed their services, we still could not find a single customer review. However, their service offerings are hard to ignore. The $149 entry point for professional bookkeeping services undercuts competitors by around $100 while maintaining a comprehensive feature set. Their transparent pricing structure and inclusion of valuable perks like onboarding cleanup set them apart in an industry rife with hidden fees.
Recommended to small businesses comfortable with being early adopters
We recommend Aced Accounting for small businesses and entrepreneurs seeking professional bookkeeping at an accessible price point. The lack of public reviews gives us slight pause, but their competitive pricing, clear service tiers, and especially their international business support make them worth considering. If you're comfortable working with a newer player in the bookkeeping space, you should find excellent value here.
Founded in 2016 by small business owner Lil Roberts, Xendoo emerged from firsthand experience with outdated accounting practices. Their proprietary technology supercharges productivity - letting their CPAs work up to 10 times faster than traditional bookkeepers. But don't worry, you'll still get the human touch, with real experts managing your books through their Xero-powered, QuickBooks-compatible platform.
Tailored solutions for your specific industry
Whether you're running an ecommerce empire across multiple platforms, managing a growing franchise, or building a professional services firm, Xendoo adapts to your needs. (And yes, they even work with social media influencers.) They handle everything from basic bookkeeping to complex financial strategy, freeing you up to focus on what matters most: growing your business.
A dedicated team keeps your books compliant and up-to-date
You'll get your own dedicated bookkeeper backed by a full team, ensuring someone's always available to help with your books. Xendoo integrates with both QuickBooks Online and Xero, giving you cloud access to your data and the freedom to take your books elsewhere if needed.
Choose from three comprehensive service tiers
When considering Xendoo, you'll have three plans to choose from:
Unfortunately, clean-up is not included in any of the above plans and is priced on a case-by-case basis. Custom solutions are available for businesses processing over $125K in monthly expenses.
Additional services for specialized needs
If you need tax guidance or filing, you can add it for $1,200 per year. Should you need to catch up on past bookkeeping, their catch-up service starts at $295/month. (Clean-up and catch-up are different: clean-up would apply if you have been categorizing and reconciling your transactions before coming to Xendoo but your balances are off and you need someone to find out why, while catch-up refers to having Xendoo reconcile and categorize your past transactions.) For strategic guidance, Xendoo's Fractional CFO service (starting at $1,500/month) can help accelerate your growth.
You'll get responsive, highly-rated support from a dedicated team
You'd be hard-pressed to find a negative review of Xendoo's bookkeeping services. They've earned a 4.7-star average from around 150 reviews, plus an "A+" Better Business Bureau rating and accreditation (rare in this industry). If you need assistance, you'll get quick responses through their live chat - they typically reply within minutes. Your dedicated bookkeeper comes backed by a full team, so there's always someone available to assist you.
Real customers rave about the personal touch and technical expertise
Business owners consistently praise their assigned Xendoo representatives by name, highlighting both technical skills and customer service. One client describes their experience as "bookkeeping on auto drive" - all you need is 60 minutes to set up your account, and Xendoo's experts will take it from there. Another client celebrates their rep's patience in sorting out messy software syncing issues. The sentiment that "apparently nothing exceeds their capabilities" seems to ring true across reviews, with customers particularly appreciating the ability to schedule direct calls with their bookkeepers with the click of a button and access documents easily through a user-friendly interface. If you're tired of waiting for a callback from your accountant as your deadlines grow ever nearer, Xendoo could be worth your while.
Holds its own despite higher price point
Xendoo offers a dependable bookkeeping solution backed by responsive human support and a 30-day money-back guarantee. While their pricing runs higher than some competitors for small to mid-sized businesses, and they lack certain cutting-edge features found in top-tier services, they deliver consistently excellent results through their dedicated bookkeeper model and Xero-powered platform. If you value reliability and personalized service - and don't mind paying a premium for it - Xendoo is a solid choice.
When it comes to bookkeeping software, FreshBooks takes a decidedly minimalist approach. You'll find fewer features here than in competing options, but that's reflected in the lower price point. The platform excels at the basics: time tracking, expense management, and straightforward invoicing. If you're a freelancer or small business owner who just needs the essentials without the complexity, FreshBooks might be worth considering - though you should know upfront that you'll be handling most tasks yourself.
Getting hands-on with your books
FreshBooks is fundamentally a self-service platform, which means you or your team will be doing the bookkeeping work. You'll handle everything from expense entry to bank reconciliation to generating basic financial reports. While the interface is designed to be approachable for non-accountants, you're largely on your own - though you can invite an external accountant to help if needed. For those wanting full-service bookkeeping, FreshBooks does partner with Bench to offer this as a premium add-on, but it's not part of the core platform.
Your flexible billing options make getting started a breeze
You'll get a risk-free start with FreshBooks through their 30-day free trial that doesn't require a credit card. They often run deals, like 70% off your first 4 months or 60% off your first 6, and you can always save an additional 10% by opting for annual billing.
Choose the perfect plan for your business size
FreshBooks offers four self-service plans. The pricing shown below reflects the 70% discount we mentioned:
Power up your accounting with flexible add-ons
Need more functionality? You can enhance your plan with advanced payments ($20/month), additional team members ($11/person/month), or integrated payroll ($40/month plus $6/user). But when it comes to tax and CFO services, you'll find FreshBooks limited compared to competitors. While you can track basic expenses with tax categories and generate standard reports like P&Ls and balance sheets, you won't get most of the comprehensive features you could want. There's no tax filing service, no automated 1099 handling, and forget about multi-state tax support - and if you're hoping for CFO-level tools, you won't find strategic financial planning, forecasting, or even basic pitch deck financials. Your best workaround? Either integrate with Bench as an add-on service for full tax support, or simply give your own CPA access to your books.
Your experience with FreshBooks might be a mixed bag
While users frequently praise FreshBooks for being easier to use than QuickBooks, it isn't without its own frustrations. There were several complaints that the software's frequent UI changes and feature removals can make it feel like you're constantly adapting to a moving target. The platform handles basic tasks like invoicing and estimates well, but banking connections and transaction imports have been particularly problematic for some users.
Customer support is a tale of two experiences
You might get lucky with friendly, responsive support, but some reviews suggest the quality has declined significantly over time. One user's nightmare scenario involved weeks of runaround for a refund, unanswered support tickets, and arduous "solutions" like "try editing your bank connections 1-2 times per day for 5 days". Another customer faced similar struggles with payment processing migration and found it "impossible to get a straight answer on anything".
The platform might still work for your needs
Despite the complaints, FreshBooks maintains a 3.9-star average on independent customer review platforms, with long-term users praising its reliability for basic bookkeeping, estimates, and invoices. If you're prepared for some potential hurdles, you could still find value here, especially at those low price points. However, it's crucial to remember that this is primarily a self-service platform, so success depends heavily on your comfort level with managing your own books. Those seeking more hands-on support or advanced features might want to explore other options or budget for FreshBooks' premium add-ons via Bench.
You've got a business to run, and managing your finances shouldn't get in the way. To that end, Bookkeeper360 offers accounting, tax, and CFO services through their platform that integrates with QuickBooks, Xero, and Gusto. Let's examine how well this bookkeeping service delivers on those promises.
Bookkeeper360's pricing structure adapts to your business size
Bookkeeper360's pricing works on a sliding scale based on your monthly expenses, with checkpoints at $20,000, $35,000, $50,000, $65,000, $100,000, and beyond. When starting from $50,000 in monthly expenses, their current pricing tiers break down like this:
Not the best price for what you get
Each of the three base plans includes a dedicated accountant who also serves as your bookkeeper, handling reconciliations on your chosen schedule. That's great, but some of Bookkeeper360's rivals offer the same features for $200+ less per month.
Additional services come with substantial price tags
Beyond the core packages, consider whether you'll need to budget for add-ons: payroll administration runs $200 monthly, sales tax management starts at $125 monthly, and back-office services like AR/AP and inventory management cost $150 monthly. For needs like book-to-tax reconciliation, app integrations, and prior month or multi-year bookkeeping projects, expect to pay $1,000+. Business tax services also start at $1,000 and individual returns at $350. So if you're running a business with $50,000 in monthly expenses, choosing the Bookkeeping + Tax plan at $799 monthly and adding both payroll administration ($200/month) and sales tax management ($125/month) would result in a total monthly cost of $1,124. That might be doable for you, but you can find better prices elsewhere.
A refreshingly low-pressure sales experience
Our interactions with Bookkeeper360's support team via their live chat were remarkably positive. Their representatives answered all our questions promptly and professionally, providing crystal-clear explanations without the usual sales pressure or misdirections. When we wrapped up our inquiries, there was no aggressive push to close - just the suggestion that we could reach out to a member of their team for a phone call if needed. In an industry where hard-selling tactics are the norm, this approach was a breath of fresh air.
Recent reviews suggest declining service quality
Unfortunately, you might not be able to expect the same prompt attention once you're a customer. We're disappointed to report that, based on customer feedback, Bookkeeper360's reputation has taken a nosedive since the last time we reviewed them. Generally speaking, the newer the customer review, the lower the associated rating is. The problems reported center around communication and reliability - one business owner had to follow up multiple times over several months just to get basic reconciliation done, only to face a stressful last-minute rush before their tax deadline.
Billing practices and customer service raise serious red flags
The issues go beyond just slow response times. Customers also report concerning billing practices, like one who was quoted $2,000 for a QuickBooks to Xero migration but got charged $5,000 without consultation. Another client faced a $1,100 penalty when Bookkeeper360 failed to file their state sales tax return on time. Even worse, when clients try to get help, they're met with a bureaucratic maze - you could need to contact four different people just to get a simple answer. As one frustrated client put it, "It should not be my job to constantly follow-up to get answers about accounting or bookkeeping - I have a business to run".
They could recover, but not recommended for now
While you might be tempted by Bookkeeper360's slick platform and comprehensive service offerings, we can't recommend them right now. Sure, they've got an impressive suite of features, but we can't ignore steep prices - starting at $599 monthly for basic bookkeeping, with essential add-ons quickly pushing that north of $1,000 - for what's become an increasingly unreliable service. When clients report having to chase down basic reconciliations for months and getting hit with unexpected charges, it's clear that Bookkeeper360 isn't living up to its promises. Your business deserves better than playing administrative detective just to get the accounting services you're already paying a premium for.
Do you want someone to handle your business's books but aren't sure where to start? You might have heard of QuickBooks Live, a service designed to complement Intuit's popular accounting software. While QuickBooks Online gives you the tools to manage your own finances, QuickBooks Live adds professional bookkeeping support - but there's a key difference between their Expert Assisted and Full-Service options that you'll want to understand.
Four plans starting at $35/month
QuickBooks Live appears to have revamped their pricing structure. Their old model was expense-based: you'd pay $200 monthly for expenses under $10,000, $300 for $10,001 to $50,000, and $400 for expenses over $50,001. Each plan included a dedicated bookkeeper who'd handle cleanup, maintain your books, and provide tax-ready financials. Now, you'll find a more flexible, feature-based pricing system, and you can even try any plan free for 30 days to make sure it's the right fit. Here's what you'll pay (with a 50% discount for your first three months in parentheses):
Get live support with Expert Assisted
All QuickBooks Live plans come with Expert Assisted service. You'll be managing your own books, but you'll have access to experienced bookkeepers who can guide you through the software. They'll help you automate your QuickBooks setup, ensure you're categorizing transactions correctly, walk you through important business reports, and keep you on track for tax season. Just keep in mind that this isn't the same as having someone do your books for you - you won't get services like book cleanup, dedicated bookkeeper support, or financial advisory services (with answers to questions like whether cash or accrual accounting is right for you). However, these services are available with QuickBooks' Full-Service Bookkeeping.
Cleanup could cost between $800 to $1500
Unfortunately, we had a really tough time getting pricing information about Full-Service Bookkeeping. We found a page on QuickBooks Live's website advertising Live Expert Cleanup separately starting at $800 a month, but we weren't sure if that price would still apply if we were already paying for a plan. When we reached out to an agent to clarify this point, the conversation went in circles for about 15 minutes before we were given any concrete information. Finally, we were told that if we purchased the "Plus" QuickBooks Live plan, Full Service bookkeeping would be an additional $1500 for a whole year. Combined with the cost of Plus, that breaks down to roughly $224/month - not terrible compared to rivals, but not as cheap as it seemed on the surface.
Customer service leaves much to be desired
If you're still considering QuickBooks Live for your bookkeeping needs, you'll want to be aware of some serious customer service concerns. Our own experience with their live chat aside, we found dozens of reports of frustrating experiences with their support system, including a 24-48 hour callback window and no email support options. Even more concerning, when customers request to speak with supervisors, they're often caught in an endless loop of promised callbacks that never materialize - one customer waited 10 days before giving up.
The bookkeeping quality might make your financial life harder, not easier
While QuickBooks Live promises to simplify your bookkeeping, many users report the opposite experience. One accountant noted that clients frequently come to them after unsatisfactory experiences with QuickBooks Live, citing issues with inconsistent categorization and questionable accounting practices. Another user reported that the service actually made their books worse, with errors like double-booked revenue and misclassified expenses - despite repeated attempts to correct these issues. One customer was even charged a $1,500 cleanup fee to fix mistakes that QuickBooks Live's own bookkeepers had made. (Perhaps not by accident, we can no longer find an official mention of their once-advertised "Accurate Books Guarantee".)
The bottom line: consider alternatives for more reliable service
Looking at the evidence, QuickBooks Live appears to be a hit-or-miss service that reflects its budget-friendly pricing. While it might seem attractive as an affordable option - with current plans ranging from $35 to $235 monthly - you could end up paying more than the sticker price. (Maybe much more, depending on your luck.) As one customer put it bluntly after a particularly frustrating experience, "Do not do it - not worth it". While QuickBooks Live's pricing may seem attractive initially, the potential costs of fixing errors and dealing with support issues could make it a more expensive option in the long run. We suggest exploring a higher-rated bookkeeping service first - especially since QuickBooks itself integrates smoothly with almost every service reviewed here.
Founded in 2018 by three tech entrepreneurs who felt the pain of messy books firsthand, Finally set out to revolutionize small business accounting. Their solution? An AI-powered platform that automates everything from transaction categorization to anomaly detection. Your financial data is processed in real-time, giving you a 24/7 snapshot of your business health.
Finally wants to be your all-in-one financial hub
You'll find all your favorite tools here - QuickBooks, Xero, Stripe, Salesforce, Shopify, Gusto, and Square all integrate seamlessly with Finally's dashboard. Want to manage multiple financial tools without juggling a dozen tabs? Finally promises to put everything you need in one place.
The promise (and potential pitfall) of full automation
Finally's AI engine does all the heavy lifting now - categorizing transactions, flagging irregularities, and even making financial recommendations. While the technology comes with a lot of lofty promises, Finally appears to have shifted away from their previous model of human oversight, and that's typically not a great sign. We'll cover how this automated approach holds up in real-world use a bit later on.
Pricing structure has become less transparent
While they previously offered a starter plan at $89 monthly with clear features, Finally has now moved to a completely opaque pricing model where you'll need to call for any pricing information - which seems like a setup for aggressive sales tactics. (They are also the only bookkeeping service in our review to conceal all pricing info this way.) Their tiered "all-in-one" structure includes:
Finally does offer a stripped-down plan with just basic bookkeeping services, without invoicing or expense management. However, without transparent pricing, it's difficult to assess whether this simpler option offers any real value. You'll need to make a sales call to learn how much you could save with the basic plan.
Reviews are either very positive or very negative
While some clients rave about Finally's service and praise specific representatives for their attentiveness, there's an alarming pattern of inconsistency in customer experiences. Even though 80% of reviews are positive, the negative experiences are serious enough that they should give you pause.
Service quality ranges from excellent to catastrophic
On the positive side, some clients describe remarkable transformations - getting years of disorganized books cleaned up within 8-12 weeks and receiving consistent, detail-oriented service afterward. But the horror stories are equally dramatic: clients report paying for months without seeing any work done, books being categorized incorrectly, and in one particularly troubling case, a supervisor allegedly stated they only promise 50% accuracy. Multiple reviewers mention being "ghosted" by the company, with response times stretching beyond two weeks.
Disappointing execution fails to match ambitious promises
Finally's pivot to opaque pricing and concerning pattern of customer service issues makes it difficult to recommend. While their AI-powered bookkeeping platform shows promise, with some clients reporting excellent results, the concerning number of catastrophic failures suggests fundamental operational issues. Finally needs significant improvements in transparency, consistency, and customer support before it can be considered a reliable bookkeeping solution. Until then, small-to-large businesses alike would be wise to explore more established alternatives.
You might be tempted by 1-800Accountant's seemingly budget-friendly prices and their ClientBooks platform that integrates with QuickBooks Online, FreshBooks, and Wave. But here's what you need to know: despite their stellar ratings on major review sites and claims about seamless accrual-based accounting, small business owners report a very different experience. You'll likely find yourself trapped in an aggressive sales pitch for expensive services you don't need - and if you do become a customer, you might face improperly filed taxes and endless frustration, despite their promises of expert bookkeeping support. (Remember that old saying about things that seem too good to be true?)
Annual billing advertised as monthly
While 1-800Accountant markets their plans with monthly pricing, everything is actually billed annually - which we find deceptive. You're looking at three tiers that have changed in more than name since the last time we reviewed this bookkeeping service:
You could end up paying even higher prices than those listed. Buried in an FAQ article, we found mention that your bookkeeping fees are dependent on the volume of your transactions.
No more free Startup tier
The most notable shift from 1-800Accountant's old structure is the elimination of their free "Startup" plan that used to help with LLC filing. The new lineup focuses more heavily on tax services and accounting support, but at higher price points across the board. While you get more dedicated support now, the annual billing requirement remains a sticking point that feels somewhat dishonest in their marketing approach.
A troubling picture of deceptive practices
While 1-800Accountant displays high average ratings on a couple of third-party review sites, dig a little deeper and you'll find a very different story. Customers consistently report aggressive sales tactics and high-pressure consultations that feel straight out of "Wolf of Wall Street", and past employees have confirmed they were coached to lie to prospective clients.
Service quality falls dramatically short of promises
The problems go beyond just sales tactics. When customers do sign up, they face unresponsive service, missed appointments, and serious tax filing errors - even when paying thousands of dollars. One customer paid $10,000 for comprehensive services but ended up having to handle their own bookkeeping and payroll, while waiting months for basic W-2 forms despite repeated requests. Another revealing case: a business owner spent two years with their books being neglected for 6-month stretches because the company "didn't think they were a client anymore". If you do manage to get someone on the phone, you'll likely spend half the call just reminding them who you are. And if you try to cancel early-on? Good luck - one solo-preneur was charged $692 for just 23 days of essentially no service, despite being promised a 30-day refund window.
The verdict: avoid at all costs
Given 1-800Accountant's deceptive pricing tactics, aggressive sales practices, unresponsive service, and serious tax filing errors, we absolutely cannot recommend them for any business. Despite their seemingly attractive pricing starting at $209 monthly, you'll likely end up paying thousands upfront (since billing is actually annual) for subpar service - or worse, facing costly tax errors. Save yourself the headache and considerable expense by choosing any other reputable bookkeeping service on our list. (Sometimes the best accounting advice is knowing when to close the books on a bad option.)
Continued from above...
Modern bookkeeping services come in various forms, each designed to meet different business needs and preferences. The traditional cash-based accounting approach tracks money as it physically moves in and out of your accounts, perfect for smaller businesses with straightforward transactions. Meanwhile, accrual-based bookkeeping records transactions when they're initiated rather than completed - ideal for businesses with complex revenue streams or longer payment cycles.
The landscape has evolved dramatically with the rise of AI-powered solutions. These automated systems can categorize transactions, reconcile accounts, and even predict cash flow patterns with impressive accuracy. However, any bookkeeping service worth its salt won't be entirely hands-off - human oversight remains crucial for handling exceptions and ensuring accuracy. Responsible AI-powered services offer a hybrid approach, combining AI efficiency with professional review for the best of both worlds.
When it comes to service models, you'll find options ranging from self-service platforms (where you maintain control while using sophisticated tools) to fully dedicated bookkeepers who handle everything for you. Your choice often depends on your comfort level with financial matters, how much time you're willing to invest, and how much assistance you can afford.
