Worldwide business insurer Hiscox started protecting America's small businesses 125 years ago with the types of policies entrepreneurs need most. Growing to safeguard hundreds of professions as the business world has evolved, Hiscox continues as a trusted name in the industry with an excellent reputation overall, though recent complaints are a mark against them. While they offer the main coverages small business owners want, some are provided through partner companies instead of directly through Hiscox. Overall, Hiscox offers an excellent option for those looking at small business insurance online.

With a fully online quote and application process, NEXT Insurance by Ergo offers the coverage options that most small business owners need as well as a couple others that many insurance companies on our list don't have. A newer provider in the industry since the company's launch in 2016, they've already covered three-quarters of a million customers in 1,300 different professions. Customizable policies, a useful app, and the fast claims process are benefits of getting covered by ERGO NEXT Insurance. Since 1810, The Hartford has been a trusted name in American insurance. Offering small business insurance for 26 industries, they present only two policy types as online options. Despite thousands of positive reviews on their own website, their reputation takes a big hit with complaints and negative reviews, making The Hartford an above-average but not-perfect option when considering business insurance online.

Members-only USAA has been around since 1922, offering insurance products of all types for individuals who have served in the military. They added business insurance to help their members secure many of the most popular types of coverage entrepreneurs need using an easy online quote process. However, a recent decline in reputation, combined with their exclusivity, puts them as just an average choice on our list for online business insurance.

Independent insurance broker InsuranceBee started in 2010 to provide business coverage for entrepreneurs in 39 states. While they offer most of the coverage types that small businesses want and need, they act as a broker for just one insurer, with no additional benefits of acting as the middleman. The low number of mixed reviews available combined with licensing in fewer states places InsuranceBee as a below-average choice among the options for business insurance.

Limiting their coverage options to specialize in just five industries, Aon Affinity is part of one of the largest insurance brokers in the world. They only offer a couple of business coverages for the industries listed, which makes them less than optimal. Also, the online quote process is complicated and details are difficult to obtain for each different insurer on the platform. All in all, Aon Affinity doesn't offer what most entrepreneurs need, making it a less than desirable option for business insurance.

While Allstate may be a recognized name in the insurance industry, their business coverages are mostly provided through a partner insurer. The website is unclear what benefit buying through Allstate instead of the partner will offer. When considering their terrible reviews and dismal reputation, we suggest seeking coverage elsewhere.

Saying they are the most visited insurance website, netQuote wants business owners to input their information for a quote they don't provide. The lead-generation company instead shares the information to connect you with their partners to provide quotes, though online reviews are bad. Time is money, and we recommend you don't waste any of it filling out the forms here. netQuote is a platform to avoid.

In today's litigious society, it's essential for companies to protect themselves from accidents, property damage, injuries, and cyber attacks. Not only is it a good idea to have insurance for your business, but in some states and industries, the law requires it.
Despite the regulations involved, business insurance is a good idea in general. Risks such as natural disasters or accidents could easily place a substantial financial burden on a small business. Without coverage, such expenses might cripple a business or even lead to a bankruptcy. If you're not covered and someone sues your company, it could spell the end of your business.
With a myriad of options to offer a shield against the risks involved in doing business, some people find themselves wondering what they actually need. Recommendations for coverage vary depending on the size of the business, the type of work done, the property owned, the technology involved, and other considerations. This can be confusing, but some insurance companies make it easier with questionnaires, checklists, and even phone consultations.
Small businesses and sole proprietors can especially be at risk since they lack the resources for a legal team and accounting division. And let's face it - insurance isn't an "exciting" expense. It's something your customers won't usually see and you will probably forget about -until you need to use it.
With specialty small business insurers and large companies competing to provide you with insurance policies, you should be able to compare quotes online to find the best price for the right protection. Use the online resources to help you understand terms and select what you need to be covered.
There are many factors to consider when determining the proper coverage. Here are some things to keep in mind as you compare your options for business insurance:
