The Black Cake Company Review 3 Star Rating

The Black Cake Company

3 Star Rating
  • $29.41 to $34.50 per month, depending on selected club
  • 3 clubs to choose from, all Caribbean favorites: Black Cake, Miniature, and Rum Cake
  • Cakes delivered every month
  • Shipping included in the club price
  • In business since 1987

The Black Cake Company, founded in 1987 by Barbadian native Angela Price, specializes in traditional Caribbean black cakes and rum cakes. These rich cakes are deeply tied to Caribbean celebrations and culture. If you're a fan of these distinctive flavors, the Black Cake Company's cake club could be a hit - but if you're not already familiar with black cake, this might not be the right subscription for you.

3 monthly cake clubs to choose from

The company now offers three subscription plans - Black Cake, Miniature, and Rum Cake - all of which deliver a cake every month. (We point that out because, at the time of our previous evaluation, subscriptions had monthly charges but didn't necessarily include a cake every month.) Let's take a look:

  • The Black Cake Lover plan includes full-size and miniature black cakes, priced at $32.86/month. It's a nice variety of cake flavors and shapes: for example, in February, you'll get a set of heart-shaped cakes; May's delivery is a 2-lb. black cake; November brings you a 2-lb. brown cake.
  • The Miniature Lover club features a variety of smaller cakes like rum cake and Dundee cake. You'll get the original set in both December and January, but all other deliveries will be unique with no repeats. You'll pay $34.50/month for this subscription.
  • The Rum Cake plan focuses on different flavors of rum cake, such as banana and coconut. It comes in the same flavors as the Miniature Lover club, but in bigger sizes. This is the most affordable cake club here, at $29.41/month.

Watch out for auto-renewals and early cancellation penalties

Shipping costs are included in the monthly fee, making this a pretty reasonably-priced cake club. But, the catch is that if you cancel early, you'll be charged the full retail value of any cakes you've already received (typically $45 per cake). Also, the subscriptions automatically renew unless you cancel, so you'll want to keep an eye on that if you're not planning to continue.

Rave reviews

From those who've been looking for a "taste of the islands” or for nostalgic cakes that make them feel like they're back home in the Caribbean, the reviews of The Black Cake Company are enthusiastic. One Jamaican born-and-raised customer raved about how authentic (and delicious) her regular black cake and mini hearts were. Another described these cakes as "as authentic as it comes” and said she gives the mini loaves every year as holiday gifts. And, one review we really loved was from a customer who had read Charlene Wilkerson's book "Black Cake” for her book club and ordered treats from The Black Cake Company to share with her fellow readers (who loved it, as you would imagine).

Rich tradition but niche appeal

While the cakes themselves are well-made and rich in tradition, this cake club is pretty niche. Black cake and rum cake are bold, complex flavors that won't appeal to everyone, especially if you're more into classic American-style cakes. Plus, the early cancellation penalty and automatic renewal policy could be a downside for some buyers. If you have a taste for Caribbean treats or want to explore something different, The Black Cake Company delivers a unique experience - but for most people, a more traditional cake club might be a better fit.

Which Cake Club is the Best?

Whether it's a rich chocolate layer cake, a classic coffee cake, or a fruity Bundt, there's something about cake that makes any day feel like a celebration. After all, who doesn't love cake? But what if you could have delicious, freshly made cake delivered to you every month? That's exactly what cake clubs offer - and it's no wonder they've become a popular way to treat yourself or surprise someone special with a gift that keeps on giving.

Cake clubs work just like any other subscription service. You sign up for a set number of months - typically three, six, or twelve - and each month, a cake arrives at your doorstep. The fun part is the variety: some clubs send a rotating mix of cake types, while others stick to a theme like coffee cakes or pound cakes. Either way, it's a sweet way to discover new flavors and try cakes you might not have picked out for yourself.

Cake Club FAQ

Not from a supermarket chain assembly line, that's for sure! Cake clubs go out of their way to bring you the most mouth-watering goodies, often from small bakeries around the nation.
The real question is, how often would you like to get a fresh cake on your doorstep? Select among monthly, bi-monthly and quarterly cake clubs, with plans lasting anywhere from three months to a year.
You'll pay anywhere from $20 to $70 per delivery, depending on the cake club provider you choose. Considering what you'd spend at a local grocery store to get a cake, or how much it costs to buy a cake from a specialty bakery, those prices are right on the money.
Sometimes. You'll want to read the terms of each cake club membership to see if delivery fees are part of your monthly price: over the course of a year-long plan, paying $5 to $10 for each shipment will really add up. Fortunately, some cake clubs include your shipping fees in their monthly pricing.
Almost always. No reputable business wants to get negative customer feedback for making deliveries that don't arrive in good condition or that taste bad. You should be able to get a refund or replacement if anything isn't quite right with your cake.
Of course! While there are always new cake clubs popping up, some subscription plans have been around for ten years or more. It's helpful to check out customer reviews of both new and established businesses, to ensure that the cake club you select will be a winner.
You'll likely get a newsletter with your cake club shipment each month. They usually have fun articles about cake, details about where your cake was made, and maybe even recommended pairings with fruit or beverages. A few providers of cake club memberships let you add on items like stuffed animals or flowers for an extra fee.
Yes! Wouldn't you love it if someone surprised YOU with a cake subscription? Cake clubs are a wonderfully unique gift-giving option, and you can usually include a personalized message with your delivery. You may even be able to have a gift announcement sent to your lucky recipient via email on

Continued from above...

One of the biggest draws of some cake clubs is the element of surprise, which makes opening the box each month feel like a little celebration. You might be given a preview of the next flavor, while others keep it a total mystery until the package arrives. And because cake is easy to store or share, it's the kind of treat that's perfect for an impromptu dessert or a cozy weekend snack.

Of course, not all cake clubs are created equal. Some focus on high-end, gourmet cakes with fancy flavors and elegant packaging. Others keep it simple with classic tastes like chocolate and vanilla. You'll also find clubs that specialize in certain types of cake - coffee cake, lava cake, even single-serve cakes-in-a-jar - while others send a wider mix. Many offer seasonal flavors, which means you could get a pumpkin spice cake in October or a lemon cake in spring.

Cake clubs are also a thoughtful gift idea. They work well for birthdays, anniversaries, or even as a thank-you gesture. It's the kind of present that stretches out the joy for months instead of just one day. Plus, there's something comforting about knowing a slice of cake is waiting for you at the end of a long week.

Ready to embark on a yummy journey? We've got you covered. But which one of the many delicious options should you pick? When choosing a cake club, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Cake size and servings. Some clubs send large cakes meant to feed a crowd, while others send individual-sized treats. Make sure the portion size fits your needs.
  • Flavor variety. Check whether the club offers a good mix of flavors or sticks to a specific type of cake. If you like surprises, go for a club that rotates flavors (or even cake styles) regularly.
  • Monthly cost. What will you pay month-to-month for your subscription? Can you pay as you go, or do you have to pay for the full cost upfront? Also, some clubs include shipping in the price, while others add it on separately. Make sure you know what to expect.
  • Subscription flexibility. Look for a club that lets you skip a month or adjust your subscription if needed.
  • Reviews and reputation. A well-liked club with responsive customer service can make a big difference if you ever have issues with your order. Does the company get a good rating from the BBB? Are there customer reviews for the business itself and the cake club in particular?
