Zazzle Review 4 Star Rating

Zazzle

4 Star Rating
  • Cost: Starting from $12.99

Zazzle is one of the first DIY print shops to hit the market, way back in 2005. They feature the work of independent Designers and Makers, while still giving you the chance to create your own projects from scratch.

Overwhelming options

Zazzle offers a somewhat overwhelming blend of create-your-own and pre-made calendars from artists and photographers. The downside is that you might have a hard time sorting through all of your options - but the obvious upside is that you can get a truly unique calendar that you won't find on other retailers' sites.

Filters are your friend

However, aside from just browsing until you stumble across something you like, you'll probably have a hard time finding a ready-made calendar by subject or theme. You can filter the options by format, size, officially licensed, events and occasions, and a few other criteria - and that's where you might get some specifics that make sense to choose from, like Disney or "For Kids".

Odd search results

But even those results felt a little off. Should random people be allowed to buy a calendar featuring someone else's kids? And why would anyone want to buy a calendar that was more than four years old? It felt like we were looking at calendars people made for their own families and listed them hoping to make a little money for themselves. Most of these calendars are priced at $22 and up, which is on the expensive side compared to most commercially-produced designs.

Confusing customization process

How does Zazzle do with make-your-own calendar options? We found ourselves almost equally confused there. Zazzle doesn't have a dedicated page just for "Create Your Own" calendar designs. They're lumped in with all of the other calendars in their inventory, so you have to work your way through and figure out if the ones that catch your eye are templates you can use.

Best Calendar Stores

Start with a blank page

The first result in the calendar listings is a customizable option, a basic two-page small calendar design for $18.95 each. You're literally starting with a blank page with this design, adding your own images and selecting the holidays you want featured (US? US + Jewish?), culture (US? Canada? New Zealand?), grid transparency and so on.

Scroll down

You might have an easier time if you scroll down to the bottom of that calendar and look at "other designs you might like" - especially if you prefer a customized calendar without so much work on your part! We found one cute template there that included a birthday list and easy personalization options, but all of the layout and design was already done. That calendar was priced at $20.05 and had a rating of 4.8/5 stars from other Zazzle customers who used it as their template.

Why do we have to do that?

Another frustrating aspect of shopping on Zazzle is the fact that you have to create an account just to get a shipping cost estimate for your order. We would definitely prefer to have a calculator in the shopping cart or at least a ballpark estimate in their policies, rather than having to sign up for their site first. In other words, your shipping costs will entirely depend on what you order and you'll have to create a user account to find out.

Stellar satisfaction guarantee

On the other hand, one big advantage to buying a calendar from Zazzle is their stellar satisfaction guarantee. If you get your calendar and don't love it, you can return it for a replacement or refund within 30 days - even if it's a customized product. You'll have to pay for the return shipping costs, but it's still a great policy compared with many other calendar stores'.

Patience is the key

That return policy is one of the most significant factors in our ranking of Zazzle for buying calendars. Even though the site has a less-than-intuitive shopping process, the range of both ready-made and 100% customizable templates gives options to virtually every customer - so even if the outcome isn't what you hope for, you can easily get your money back. If you have the patience to sort through all of the options and to make any desired personalization, you'll probably come out with a calendar you love when buying from Zazzle.

Where Can You Get the Best Calendars?

Even with the popularity of calendar apps on phones and computers, print calendars haven't gone out of style.

There's something about a paper calendar that feels different: seeing it hanging on the wall in the kitchen, so everyone in the family can see important events and appointments at a glance, or pulling off a page to find the new quote or joke underneath. And, of course, personalized photo calendars are still a popular way to relive and share fun memories with friends and family.

Calendar Store FAQ

It originates from the Latin word calendarium, which meant "account book" or "interest register" according to Britannica. But, the idea of a calendar, or a way of tracking the time from one day or season to the next, certainly isn't limited to the ancient Romans. You could spend hours looking at different historical calendars, from the Mayans to the Persians and many other cultures and time periods.
Most people use the Gregorian calendar, introduced way back in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. This system was put in place to account for the fact that it takes 365 1/4 days for the earth to go around the sun - and that's why we have an extra day on February 29th every four years (a "leap year" ).
Yes, often ones with religious underpinnings. For example, the Islamic (or Hijri) calendar, is strictly based on the cycles of the moon (which is why the dates of Ramadan don't always correspond to the same dates or seasons on the Gregorian calendar).
There's nothing historical about it - it's simply for convenience. That lets you buy a calendar for the next year before it starts, and you can transfer any events or reminders from the current year's calendar if you want to start using the new one right away.
Even though most of us rely on some kind of digital calendar system, from Outlook to Google, paper calendars are still in demand. Many people like being able to see a month at a glance, to see which birthdays and other special occasions are on the horizon. And, customizable calendars with family photos continue to be a fun way to share memories while planning new ones. Page-a-day calendars can still be spotted on office desks, bringing humor or inspiration to the workplace.
If you're just looking at local retailers, the answer is likely to be no. Many stores only carry them from November through January and then clear them all out, especially if they don't specialize in calendars and other print items (e.g supermarkets vs. bookstores). Fortunately, there are many online retailers of calendars that let you purchase them whenever you like!
Not any more than it is to buy them in-person. Some stores will even give you free shipping, discounts or seasonal promos to sweeten the deal.
Policies vary by retailer, but most will give you a replacement, store credit or refund if you're unhappy with the calendar you receive. This is also true of customized calendars: if you design one with your own photos and graphics and something goes wrong in the print process, the best calendar stores will reprint it for you, no questions asked.

Continued from above...

But, have you tried to find a good selection of calendars at your local retailer lately? Even during peak calendar-buying season - namely, December and January - many stores have stopped carrying many paper calendars. And forget about finding something cute or unique any other time of year!

Is it any surprise that online calendar stores are your best choice year-round? Whether you're looking for beautiful photographs of national parks or beaches, or you need some daily inspiration for your desk at work, you'll find the best selection and prices by shopping on the internet. You'll have hundreds, if not thousands, of calendars to choose from, usually priced well below what you'd see in a brick-and-mortar store. Plus, if you're creating a one-of-a-kind calendar with your own photos, some of the best online retailers have easy-to-use tools that make the process straightforward and fun.

In order to decide which calendar store should get your business, there are several criteria to keep in mind. These include the following:

  • Selection. Will there be a lot of sizes, styles and themes to choose from? Are there multiple options within a category, like dog breeds or religious quotes?
  • Cost. How much will you pay for your calendar, including shipping? Are there any customer-friendly perks like free delivery or promotional discounts?
  • Satisfaction Policy. If you're unhappy with your calendar for some reason, can you return it and get your money back? If so, how much time do you have to make your decision?
  • Reputation. What do other customers say about their experience with buying and/or creating a calendar with the retailer? This is especially important if you're designing your own photo calendar.
