Easy DNA provides a range of DNA testing services for both humans and pets, including cats and dogs, making it a one-stop-shop for the entire family's DNA testing needs. They've been in business for a decade and have an "A+" rating from the Better Business Bureau, which speaks to their reliability. Their cat DNA tests can help you figure out if your feline friend is dealing with any health issues, and they offer a variety of tests to choose from.
Good array of tests, but potentially most popular are not available
Easy DNA offers a selection of cat DNA tests for cat parents and breeders alike.
If you have a specific breed prone to PKD or your cat has allergies, or if you're a breeder, the tests currently available could be useful. However, if you're mainly interested in breed information or genetic disease screening, you'll need to wait for those broader tests to become available.
Free shipping, 8-10 week turnaround (but may come sooner)
Here's how you can use the Easy DNA Cat Genetics testing kit. First, order your kit online and it will be shipped to you in 3 to 5 business days for free. To collect the sample, you just need to rub the swab provided inside your cat's mouth for about a minute and a half. Let it dry and then mail it back in the included return envelope. After 8 to 10 weeks, you'll get your results by email. (Some tests promise sooner results, in about 10 business days.)
Be careful to avoid account reactivation fees
You have three months to send back your samples from the time you place your order. If you don't, your account will be closed and reopening it will cost you $65. (No other cat DNA test kit company in our review has this policy.) If you cancel your order before the company sends your kit, you'll get a full refund. If you cancel after you get your kit but before you send back your samples, you'll have to pay a postage and admin fee. If you cancel after the company has received your samples, you won't get any refund. If you cancel the order before your samples are shipped, you'll be charged a $40 fee.
Allergy tests have been particularly successful
Customers typically have positive experiences with Easy DNA, particularly with identifying allergies in their pets. For example, one customer was able to dramatically improve their cat's health by using the Easy DNA cat sensitivity test. After years of struggling with skin sores and unsuccessful food changes, this test helped the customer realize that their cat was sensitive to cooked meat and gelatin, a protein found in many pet foods. Following this revelation, the cat was transitioned to a raw food diet and is now completely free of sores and has a full, healthy coat of fur. While Easy DNA may not offer all the tests you need right now, their existing tests can still provide valuable insights into your pet's health, and we consider them to be trustworthy. This cat DNA testing company earns an above-average rating from us.
Have you ever gazed into your cat's eyes and thought, "Who are you really, and how did you master the art of knocking things off tables with such precision?" If so, you're not alone in your curiosity. While it's a fun thought to imagine your cat as a descendant of some grand, exotic lineage, the truth is a bit more domestic.
Most cats are not directly related to purebreds since purebred cats make up less than 5% of the global cat population. Unlike dogs, where many can trace their lineage back to distinct breeds, most cats are descendants of a long line of domestic short, medium, or longhair cats. This doesn't make them any less noble, but it does challenge DNA tests that claim to pinpoint a specific breed heritage.
This means that when a cat DNA test throws up a specific breed result, take it with a grain of salt. However, it doesn't mean cat DNA tests are without merit. When it comes to proactively looking after your cat's health, these tests can be incredibly useful.
Cat DNA tests can identify genetic markers associated with diseases, which can be crucial for preventative care and management of potential health issues. For example, some cats are prone to genetic disorders like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, polycystic kidney disease, or even sensitivities to common medications. By identifying these markers early, a cat DNA test can be a powerful tool in preventative pet health care.
By understanding your cat's genetic predispositions, you can make the right choices for their diet, exercise, and environment and make better, more informed decisions in collaboration with your vet.
