Bean Box Review 2.5 Star Rating

Bean Box

2.5 Star Rating
  • Pricing: $19.23 per 12 oz bag, free shipping
  • Experienced curation by judges who have participated in coffee competitions
  • Sourced from independent US-based coffee roasters
  • Ships within 48 hours of order for maximum freshness
  • Offers gift subscriptions and one-time gift options
  • "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau

Based in Seattle, Bean Box was founded by coffee enthusiasts who started out in the tech industry. Their love for coffee is rooted in the inspiration and connections it sparks for those in STEM fields. Every package is roasted and shipped from Seattle.

Take a short quiz to start

The first thing you do when you land on Bean Box's website is complete a coffee preference quiz. At the end, you'll choose your delivery for every 2 weeks or every 4. The more frequent your orders, the lower the price. Instead of paying per delivery, you can opt for their annual plan, which can supposedly save you $124 each year (but it varies according to the quantity and frequency of your order). We wouldn't necessarily go for this, though. You won't know if their coffee is your thing until you've tried it.

$20 a bag plus free shipping

If you want to try out one bag, no subscription strings attached, you can do so for $24 - which is admittedly pricey. Subscribing to a box of one 12 oz bag of freshly ground coffee delivered every 2 weeks costs $19.23/bag, shipping included. This is a bit spendy compared to their rivals, if not the most expensive overall. Try out the code First50, which might get you 50% off your first order.

Best Coffee Clubs

Experienced curation

You don't seem to be able to view present or past options after you complete the taste quiz here. Every box will be a surprise, but you can mark past selections as favorites by looking at your order history. You can also rest a little easier with the assurance that Bean Box's curators are appropriately experienced for their role: many of them have judged coffee competitions, including for the one and only "Cup of Excellence” award. Your coffee beans will arrive in bags with description bearing the logos of the roasters and information about the beans inside.

US-based roasters

Bean Box sources its coffee from independent coffee roasters based in the USA. Check out their "Roasters” tab to learn more about who these businesses are. If you see something you like in their catalogs, or if you want some certainty along with your surprise selection, you can easily add it to your cart. If you want to browse all of Bean Box's coffees in one place, you can do that too, via the "Coffee” tab on the homepage. They're categorized as Featured This Week, Customer Favorites, Light Roasts, Medium Roasts, Dark Roasts, Single Origin, Espresso, Decaf, and New Arrivals.

Ships within 48 hours

Every Bean Box order is packaged and shipped directly from the roasting partner within 48 hours of your order, so it arrives as fresh as possible. If you need something sooner, Bean Box also keeps stock on hand that is ready to ship.

Best Coffee Clubs

Gift subscriptions available

If you're interested in gifting a coffee club subscription to a friend or loved one, check out Bean Box's Curator's Coffee of the Month Club, their World Coffee Tour Subscription, or their US Coffee Road Trip Subscription. The latter is our favorite: each delivery will include 12 oz of coffee that exemplifies the flavors of regional coffee roasters around the US, like Provision's light roast Palo Verde blend representing the South, or Kuma's medium light roast Sun Bear for the West Coast. (Hey, that kinda rhymed.) Additional one-time gifts under $50 are available too, and even bulk orders for corporate gifting.

Reviews are hard to find

While the Better Business Bureau gives Bean Box an "A+”, the scant customer reviews we were able to find told a different story. One reviewer describes customer service as nonexistent, another expresses frustration with flavorless, non-aromatic coffee, and another details Bean Box's failure to get two early-December orders to the recipients in time for Christmas. (That one may be on the reviewer, though.) The site says order cancellation can be done from your account with the click of a button, but it's hard to say much about how easy or difficult it is in reality without access to more customer reviews.

The verdict is still brewing

Overall, Bean Box isn't giving us a strong positive or negative impression. They offer fresh, US-roasted coffee with quick shipping, which is great. But the lack of customer reviews and some potential service issues are yellow, maybe red, flags. The pricing is okay, and they have cool gift options. Their coffee club might be worth a shot, but we don't recommend you commit long-term right away. Try it out, see if you like it, and go from there. It could be a hit or miss, depending on your luck and coffee preferences.

Which Coffee Club is the Best?

For centuries, coffee has been more than just a vehicle for your caffeine fix - it's been a catalyst for connection, creativity, and culture around the world. From elegant cafes in Paris to quiet mountain villages in Colombia, this beloved beverage has brought people together and fueled countless conversations, ideas, and dreams.

But for many of us, our daily cup has become routine instead of a moment to savor. If you find yourself stuck in a coffee rut, reaching for the same familiar-but-”meh” blend day after day, it might be time to shake things up with a coffee club subscription. Coffee clubs are perfect for coffee drinkers who want to explore flavors (and freshness) beyond what's available at their local grocery store.

Coffee Club FAQ

That depends on the club you select. Some offer a wide range of both ground and whole bean coffee from around the world, while others limit their selections to just one or two varieties from a single country of origin.
You decide! Need your supply replenished every week? No problem. Just looking to try something new once a month? You can do that too. Just choose the club that offers the frequency you want.
They're surprisingly affordable. You'll pay anywhere from $9 to $28 per delivery. Shipping is included in the price of most coffee clubs.
Most coffee clubs want you to love what you get - and keep coming back for more! You'll usually be covered by some kind of satisfaction guarantee, with a replacement or refund if you're not happy for any reason.
You're in luck! There are a few coffee clubs that offer plans with K-Cups.
Yes, and they're a great way to make sure your coffee is fresh and flavorful. While new clubs are always popping up, there are many providers that have been around for decades - and have the positive customer feedback to prove it.
It would be nice to see add-ons like unique mugs or creamers, but most coffee clubs just stick to what they do best: the coffee itself. A few clubs include a fun newsletter with each delivery, giving you in-depth information about each selection you receive, coffee facts, and maybe even a recipe or two for brewing your next cup in a different way.
Of course! What java addict wouldn't love to get something new and delicious for their morning cup? Coffee clubs let you show your love and appreciation for a lucky gift recipient - for as long as you like!

Coffee clubs are also great for busy professionals who don't have time to hunt down specialty beans or for those who simply want the convenience of having freshly roasted coffee delivered right to their doorstep. Coffee clubs take the guesswork out of choosing new coffees - you get to benefit from expert curators' knowledge about tasting notes and brewing tips for the perfect morning cup of joe.

Coffee clubs range from specialized to generic. Some take pride in sourcing single-origin beans from a particular country, like Costa Rica. Others act as a middle-man for US-based independent roasters, helping you discover a new business or award-winning coffee every month. However, some are a bit one-note and lacking in customization options or variety.

The frequency of deliveries can vary too. Some clubs ship weekly, so you'll never run out of fresh beans. Others operate on a monthly basis, which might be better if you don't go through coffee as quickly. You'll also find differences in customization options - some clubs let you choose every coffee you receive, while others surprise you with new selections based on your taste preferences. Most coffee clubs have a quiz to help you figure out what those preferences are.

When shopping for a coffee club online, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Variety. How many different coffees does the club offer? Look for a club with a large selection to keep things interesting. A good club should introduce you to new origins and roast levels regularly to prevent flavor fatigue.
  • Customization. Can you set the selections to align with your preferences? The best clubs allow you to specify things like roast level, whole bean or ground, and even flavor notes you enjoy. This makes it more likely that you'll love every coffee you receive.
  • Frequency and quantity. How often do they ship, and how much coffee do you get? Make sure the club's shipping schedule and amounts match your consumption habits. You don't want to end up with too much coffee going stale or to run out before your next shipment.
  • Educational content. Do they provide information about the coffee? Look for clubs that offer details about the coffee's origin, tasting notes, and brewing recommendations.
  • Price and value. How does the cost compare to buying coffee locally? While coffee clubs often charge a premium for their service, the selection and convenience should justify the price. Compare a few options to find the best value for your budget.
