Cheryl's Cookies Review 2 Star Rating

Cheryl's Cookies

2 Star Rating
  • 2 options: Flavor of the Month and Buttercream Frosted Cut-Out Cookie of the Month
  • 12 or 24 cookies in each box
  • Prices start at $19.99/delivery
  • $12.99 shipping fee per delivery (discounted on prepaid clubs)
  • Can subscribe to Celebrations Passport to save money on shipping
  • Prepay or pay as you go
  • Great gift-giving features
  • 100% satisfaction guarantee
  • "A-” rated by the BBB
  • In business for over 40 years
  • Part of the 1-800 Flowers family of brands

Cheryl's Cookies has its roots in the Midwest, with a famous buttercream recipe that has always had people coming back for more. Although Cheryl's is now part of the 1-800 Flowers group of brands, which includes other big names like The Popcorn Factory and Harry & David, the cookies still have the same homemade taste.

2 clubs to choose from

You have two cookie club options here: Buttercream Frosted Cut-Out Cookie of the Month or Cookie Flavor of the Month. Each subscription comes with 12 or 24 individually-wrapped cookies, with prices starting at $34.99 (though there was a promotion in place during our most recent visit, bringing the cost down to an impressively affordable $19.99). In either subscription, Cheryl's Cookies tells you exactly what to expect in each box: for example, the Cut-Out club will deliver frosted shamrocks in March and pumpkins in October, while the Flavor of the Month sends you frosted peanut butter cookies in March and frosted cinnamon pumpkin cookies in October.

Pay upfront or as you go

We appreciate that Cheryl's Cookies gives you the option to either pay as you go, with cookies coming every month until you reach out to cancel, or to pre-pay for a 6- or 12-month subscription. That gives you some flexibility for both your budget and for how long you'd like to keep the cookies coming.

Plenty of gift-giving features during checkout

These cookie clubs are super hassle-free to send as a gift (in theory, anyway, but more on that later...). In the checkout process, you can indicate where the cookies should be sent, which occasion you're gifting for, and add a gift message. If you're not feeling super creative, Cheryl's Cookies can even suggest a message for you. All of that is free, but you can pay $4.99 if you'd prefer to have your message on a personalized printed greeting card included with the delivery. They also want to make sure you don't forget this special occasion next year, letting you opt into reminders. You'll probably want to choose a prepaid cookie club, however, unless you want your gift to literally be one that keeps on giving indefinitely.

Extras available when you're ready to pay

Whether you're sending this cookie subscription to yourself or to someone special, you'll be given the opportunity to add some extras during the checkout process. During our visit, we were offered 36 frosted hearts for $35.99 or a "mystery box” of cookies for $24.

Celebrations Passport pays for itself quickly

Another decision you'll need to make is if you're planning on doing a lot of gift-giving through the 1-800 Flowers brand family. If so, you'll want to check out the Celebrations Passport. It costs $29.99/year, but you get free shipping on eligible items (like the cookie clubs at Cheryl's), plus points towards rewards. Given that the shipping fee is a hefty $12.99 on every cookie club delivery on the month-to-month plans, and over $70 on a 1-year prepaid subscription, that Passport membership pays for itself pretty quickly.

Hundreds of customer complaints

Despite having an "A-” grade from the Better Business Bureau, Cheryl's Cookies has gotten a lot of negative feedback with respect to customer service. In fact, out of 275 reviews left on Trustpilot, a whopping 89% only give the company 1 star (and would probably go lower if they could). One customer ordered birthday cookies to be delivered in May, and when Cheryl's sent them to the wrong address (in another state), they sent stale Easter cookies as an apology. Another had birthday cookies that got canceled with no notice, and then the customer service rep wanted them to submit a photo... of the cookies they never got? Comment after comment said they'd never do business with Cheryl's Cookies again, and that was particularly sad to hear from people who had been long-time customers there.

The cookies taste good, though

It's also too bad that Cheryl's Cookies doesn't seem to have its act together on the delivery, because most reviews on the treats themselves are positive. Look at any of the reviews left for the cookie clubs themselves, and you'll almost always see 4- and 5-star ratings, describing the cookies as tasty and well-received.

Not a cookie club we're excited about

While we'd like to give the cookie clubs at Cheryl's Cookies a higher rating on the nostalgia factor alone, the fact is that we just can't. When so many customers are reporting issues with getting help when orders don't arrive, that 100% satisfaction guarantee that the 1-800 Flowers' companies offer isn't worth much. And, let's face it, frosted sugar cookies aren't everyone's favorite cookie either, so the variety of cookies offered in these two clubs isn't going to "wow” some people. Cheryl's Cookies earns a lower rating in our review.

Cookie Club FAQ

Most cookie clubs get their cookies from top-notch small businesses around the country. You won't get the same old thing you could find at any supermarket near you. It's like having a bakery come directly to you!
That's up to you. Cookie subscriptions can be set to arrive each month, every other month, or even quarterly. You can have your membership last for three months, six months, or a full year.
They'll cost more than buying a mass-produced package of cookies at the grocery store, but probably less than buying cookies from a specialty bakery. Costs average from $12 to $30 per month for up to three pounds of cookies.
Some cookie clubs include delivery fees in their monthly costs, while others tack them on at checkout. That can definitely add to what you'll be spending, so be sure to read the details before you sign up for a subscription.
Most of the time, yes. What company wants bad reviews for delivering subpar treats? If your cookies arrive in less-than-perfect condition, it shouldn't be hard to get a replacement or a refund.
Definitely! Some of the most popular cookie clubs have been around for two decades or longer, bringing delight to lovers of sweets everywhere. Even some of the newer monthly subscription plans have already earned a loyal fan base with their delicious treats.
It's rare for any subscription box to just send the products and nothing more. Your cookie club membership will probably come with an entertaining newsletter that tells you where your treats were made and gives you fun cookie trivia to share with your friends.
Of course! Who doesn't love cookies?! Cookie clubs make it really easy to give as a gift for any occasion: enter your greeting and it'll be included with your first shipment, or have it emailed directly on any date you wish. Cookie club providers vary with what they offer in terms of gift-giving features, so choose the one that gives you the most bells and whistles for your lucky recipient.

Continued from above...

Convenience is key in our fast-paced world, and cookie subscriptions offer just that. No more rushing to the store to satisfy your cookie cravings or spending hours in the kitchen baking batch after batch. With a subscription, simply sit back, relax, and let the cookies come to you. It's like having your own personal cookie concierge, ready to indulge your sweet tooth on the regular.

And let's not overlook the sheer brilliance of giving a cookie subscription as a gift. Picture the joy on your loved one's face as they unwrap their first box of cookies, a delectable surprise at their door after a long day at work or school. It's a gift that keeps on giving, spreading happiness and indulgence month after month. Whether it's for a birthday, anniversary, or just because, a cookie subscription is a thoughtful and memorable way to show someone you care.

Which cookie club is going to best satisfy your sweet tooth? As you consider the tempting variety of cookie clubs out there, here are five factors to help you compare your options:

  • Variety of flavors. Look for clubs that offer a diverse selection of cookie flavors, so that each month brings a new and exciting experience. We love it when a cookie subscription shows you what previous boxes have included, so that you can see for yourself if you're likely to get flavors you'll enjoy.
  • Flexibility. Some cookie clubs offer the ability to customize your subscription based on dietary needs (like gluten-free) or flavor preferences. You might also be able to skip a month, if the subscription lets you preview what's coming. Consider whether this option is important to you or to the recipient of your gift.
  • Payment options. Do you want to pay for your cookie club upfront (which can be spendy) or would you like the ability to pay month-to-month?
  • Value. Notice we didn't say "cost”. The value of your cookie subscription depends on several things: the monthly price, whether or not shipping is included, how many cookies you get in each delivery, and if there are any fun perks (like a newsletter or fancy gift packaging).
  • Reputation. This may be the most important way to choose the right cookie club. Do people rave about the subscription, from the cookies themselves to the customer service? Look for glowing reviews from loyal subscribers as your clue that it's a club worth choosing.
