A Pinterest idea led Dirty Cookie founder Shahira Marei to take on a new venture. Right away this site stands out because it only sells two things: cookie shots and stuffed cookies. These are soft and chewy cookie-shaped shot glasses you can fill with milk (or something stronger) to complement your treat, and they are sold six for $34.99 or 12 for $54.99. The website also has a pop up to sign up with your email address to receive a discount on your order.

Getting creative with your cookie shots

If you're feeling creative, you can order a bundle which comes with a cookie shot decorating kit. This includes edible decorations for six cookie shots, plus sprinkles and chocolate wafers. Seasonal holiday DIY decorating kits start at $49.99. Additionally, you'll find tips and recipes for sprucing up the cookie shots on the site's blog.

Gooey goodness

For a more traditionally-shaped cookie, Dirty Cookie offers its stuffed cookies. Described as "stuffed, gooey, and oh so satisfying,” the stuffed cookies combine sweet tastes in five varieties - chocolate chip hazelnut spread, white chocolate chip cookie butter, double chocolate salted caramel, peanut butter & jelly, and red velvet. They sell an assortment package with the first four flavors at a half dozen for $34.99 or a dozen for $54.99. If you prefer, you can also build your own assortment of stuffed cookies or get a package of your favorite flavors, which allows you to try the red velvet with cheesecake not offered in the assortment pack. Dirty Cookie bakes its product fresh daily. On the website they instruct that baked items may be stored for up to 30 days or frozen for up to 3 months.

Navigating dietary restrictions

If you have dietary restrictions, keep this in mind: the products are certified kosher. The website's FAQ says there are vegan options available and that they have a gluten-free cookie shot, but they were not found on sale when we visited the website. Cookie shots do not contain nuts but are made in a facility that shares equipment and handles nuts and tree nuts.

Creative gift idea

The focus at Dirty Cookie is on enjoying the cookies yourself rather than sending a gift. That doesn't mean there are no options you could send to the cookie lover in your life. The themed DIY decorating kits for the cookie shots might be just the thing for the upcoming holiday, birthday, or event. One reviewer on the site said, "What a cool idea and gift! I wanted to send gifts that weren't the traditional boring box of chocs, or flowers, or whatever…. Cookie shots were perfect!” E-gift cards are also available in different denominations.

UPS 2nd Day Air and Next Day Air Saver are given as options, which can cost up to $51.74 on an order of six cookie shots and a dozen stuffed cookies. Per Dirty Cookie's website, there's a solid guarantee here: "Delivered fresh to your doorstep or your money back.” While the company does not accept returns or exchanges due to the perishable nature of the product, they will "make every effort to make sure you are happy with your Dirty Cookie experience.”

What are the cookie-loving customers saying about a unique product like what Dirty Cookie offers? Reviews on the cookies are mixed. Some love the concept of the cookie shots and call them amazing, while others claim they are overpriced and "mediocre.” The company is not listed on BBB or Trustpilot, and the Yelp reviews are many years old. Reviews featured the business and had some good things to say, such as "we think these cookies are worth the hype.”

Cookie arrangements are truly the star at Cookies By Design, but it's for more than just birthdays or holidays. From mixing to icing, baking, and decorating, the completely handmade cookies are available in a variety of creative and cute shapes to make anyone's day. Cookie arrangement sizes start with one cookie in a mug and increase to the 12-cookie bouquet, while "BouTrays” begin at three cookies and also reach a 12-cookie maximum. Cookie baskets are also available. If you like the idea of a cookie cake, they can take care of that for you, too. Cookie cakes are customizable and offer a chance for everyone to enjoy a piece of cookie with frosting at the celebration. A 13” round, chocolate chip cookie cake is baked fresh and hand-decorated at each location. It starts at $39.99 and costs as much as $44.99 for a fully iced cookie cake.

Themed cookie trays

For an event or celebration, gourmet cookie trays feature beautifully-decorated themed cookies in various custom shapes, including cupcakes, baby carriages, footballs, and even nurses' scrubs. Designated as "cookie favors”, these sugar cookies are decorated in vibrant colors and add something personal to the dessert table. Each tray features a themed assortment of 12 decorated cookies and runs from $56.99 to $61.99.

Do-it-yourself kits

For those who would like to try their hand at being a cookie decorator, you can order cookie decorating kits which give you the cookies and frosting to do it yourself on the pre-baked shaped sugar cookies. Some cookie trays combine a dozen decorated and shaped sugar cookies with two dozen assorted gourmet cookies for a party-sized dessert priced at $95.99. Also listed under their specialty cookies, you will find other varieties including birthday sprinkles gourmet, strawberry surprise gourmet, and seasonal flavors, sandwich cookies (two of the gourmet cookies with a layer of creamy icing to hold them together), treat boxes, sampler boxes, mini bites, and Sweet Spots (bite-sized iced cookies).

Regarding dietary restrictions

Some Cookies By Design locations offer sugar-free gourmet cookies but not decorated. On the site's FAQ, it says they offer gluten-free cookies but we could not find them on the menu. Also, a note says their products are baked in locations which use peanuts and/or tree nuts, so be aware if that is a concern for you.

Delivery options

Same-day delivery is offered on specific products marked on the website, and in selected areas of the country. The fees range from $19 to $24. Whenever possible, they offer hand-delivered gifts, which are prepared in the area to which you are sending the treats. This is not generally available on Sundays and holidays. Local pickup may also be available from a nearby store.

Mixed reviews

Reviews for Cookies By Design are mixed and seem to vary by location. One complaint on Yelp said the cookies were dry and tasted like cardboard, while another customer raved that it was the best cookies she'd had in years. In addition to cookies, the brand also sells brownies, cakes, berries and other tasty treats. It operates 250 franchised stores throughout the world and is based out of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Mrs. Fields offers baked goodies for all who have a sweet tooth. The cookie flavors are the traditional tried-and-true favorites the bakery has become famous for. For example, on the day we looked, it was a Thank You cookie tin of 48 Nibblers cookies for $19.24, marked down from $34.99. On the website you can receive a coupon for 20% off if you sign up for Mrs. Fields' email and text message list. This cannot be applied to the Deal of the Day.

Shipping varies

Shipping costs will vary based on the size of the order and the speed of delivery desired. The Deal of the Day item we mentioned cost $19.24 and shipping ranged from $9.99 to $24.99. Add on the cookie tub and the cost jumps up to as much as $39.99 for next day delivery while the cookie tower shipping was $59.99.

Local pickup option for variety without shipping

If you need the cookies today or desire more variety, you can look for your closest location and order online from a local store for pickup. You can choose from the freshly-made cookies in four categories: classic, Nibblers (smaller cookies), mega cookies (three times the size of the original), and frosted cookies. Flavor varieties include sugar butter, white chocolate macadamia, milk chocolate chip, peanut butter, and sea salt caramel. Online ordering prices range from one classic cookie at $2.99, or a brownie for $4.29 each, to a dozen Nibblers (you choose the flavors) for $11.99. Unhappy reviewers

Mrs. Fields is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau, and complaints on the BBB site focus on customer service and shipping issues. It has an "F” rating from the BBB. Trustpilot reviews are limited to just 8 and have many unhappy people, mostly due to shipping and customer service issues over the holidays. Quality feedback is mixed: one online reviewer said the cookies tasted as good as he remembered from his youth in Chicago where he frequented the stores, so he now has them shipped to his home in another state. (Oddly, others complain the recipe has changed and is no longer to their liking.) Regarding returns, the website states that due to the perishable nature of the items sold, returns are not accepted once shipped. Their satisfaction policy listed in the frequently asked questions on their website says they will replace damaged items or packaging if reported as directed.

Skip the shipping and go local

Although Mrs. Fields is a well-known name in the cookie biz, it doesn't rank as our favorite option. The company has gotten its fair share of complaints lately, and shipping fees can get spendy. If you're absolutely set on getting your cookies from Mrs. Fields, we'd recommend placing your order online for in-store pickup near you. Mrs. Fields earns a "just average" rating from us.

Milk Bar opened its first location in New York City in 2008. The founder, award-winning pastry chef Christina Tosi, is known for combining formal training with home baking and classic American sweets. The bakery was recently profiled on Netflix's docu-series "Chef's Table.” We loved the company's mission statement on their website: "At Milk Bar, we believe in the transformative power of a really freakin' good cookie or an outstanding piece of cake. And we consider NO occasion at all, to be a perfectly valid occasion to celebrate yourself or someone else. We hope you'll agree.” The company lists many of its charitable partners on its About Us page. Milk Bar's "We Believe” page shares more about ways it supports causes such as human rights, voter education, and sharing joy with those in need.

Cookies that comfort and delight taste buds

With nine varieties of cookies, Milk Bar has something for all tastes. They say they are "classic favorites with a twist” to "take your taste buds back to childhood with an extra culinary surprise.” Sold individually wrapped, the cookies are available in tins of six or twelve. The six-count assorted cookie tin provides one each of these flavors - compost (not as gross as it sounds, we promise), cornflake chocolate chip marshmallow, confetti, corn, blueberry & cream, and chocolate confetti - for $27. The tin can be upgraded to twelve cookies for $46. There is an option to add a gift label wrap or bundle tins and save up to 10%.

The other flavor choices are sold in single flavor tins, so you can choose to indulge in your desired tasty treat. Aside from the ones in the popular variety tin, you can order chocolate chip ‘n chunk, triple peanut butter, oatmeal cream. Those three flavors are part of the Cookie Classics assorted tin, available in six or twelve. Other tin options are the cookie faves tin with 3 of each of compost, cornflake, confetti, and chocolate confetti for $46, and the Milk Bar sampler, which offers b'day cake truffles and chocolate b'day cake truffles, one of each cookie from the assorted sampler, and a single slice of Milk Bar pie for $60. For even more goodies, you can build your own care package by choosing from your personal combination of cakes, cookies, pies, and truffles. Pricing depends on what you add to it. Milk Bar offers up to 10% off when you bundle. See the website for specifics on storage of baked treats once they arrive, including serving recommendations.

Something a little different

Listed as a limited time product, Milk Bar has a super crunchy cookie variety pack that brings together savory and sweet. Sold in 4.5 oz. bags, the cookies are available in Momofuku chili crunch, pretzel-y chocolate chip, and brown butter chip. You can get one of each bag in this pack for $21. Look for cookie cereal at holidays and holiday-themed bundles throughout the year.

Dietary restriction options limited

While Milk Bar offers a gluten-free birthday cake, birthday cake truffles, and fruity marshmallow cookies, the cookies were not shown on the site when we viewed it and other gluten-free items were listed "sold out” with an option to get on the waitlist for when they were back in stock. Milk Bar also offers Kosher items.

Money-saving options

To save money on your order, look for the pop-up to sign up for texts and receive money off an order. Additionally, there is a birthday offer if you provide your information. The bundles provide another chance to save money.

Shipping deals and planning ahead

Milk Bar says they make the treats fresh and then flash freeze them for quality purposes before shipping to you. Free standard shipping is offered on large orders. Next-day delivery is available anywhere in the USA, though they offer other options to meet your budget. Starting at $15, shipping costs can go up to $65. You can select a delivery date up to 30 days in advance if you are planning ahead. The bakery uses a variety of shipping companies to send its product. They ship seven days a week, but delivery from a local Milk Bar is an option if you don't want to wait for shipping.

Gift giving extras

There is an option to provide a gift message during checkout. Milk Bar offers options for corporate gifting and e-gift cards. Shopping by occasion is available, with every celebration option listed, though the products remain the same. Wrap up

Offering up a nice tin of six individually wrapped cookies in unique flavors at a reasonable price, Milk Bar may initially seem attractive to cookie buyers. Ratings and reviews leave us wary of this bakery as a reliable source of tempting treats. While Milk Bar has good press, it might be better to listen to experienced customers and find another option on our list instead.

Magnolia Bakery opened the doors of its first location in 1996 in New York City and is considered to have contributed to the 1990s cupcake boom. The bakery and its goodies have been featured in numerous NYC-based TV shows and movies. Since then, the store has opened locations around the world and expanded its offerings.

Three varieties to choose from

As cookie varieties go, Magnolia Bakery is limited in its offerings for shipping. You can choose from six chocolate chunk cookies for $21, six banana pudding cookies for $28, or the cookie assortment, which provides a dozen each of chocolate chunk and oatmeal raisin, for $48. If you would like to try one of the bakery's samplers, the chocolate decadence sampler is 12 chocolate chunk cookies, six double fudge brownies, and six chocolate chunk blondies for $75. Additionally, the banana pudding lovers' sampler pack includes six cups of their famous fresh banana pudding and six of the soft-baked banana pudding cookies for $84.

Overnight shipping plus insurance for deliveries

When choosing to have your order shipped, you have the option to include a free gift message. Nationwide orders are made fresh and shipped from the New York City location. They do not offer customization or substitutions on shipping orders. The cost for shipping is calculated at checkout, with priority overnight costing $35, even for a large order. Their policy is that all perishable treats shipped are final sale. While they do not allow returns or refunds, Magnolia Bakery states that if you have an issue, contact them within five days of original delivery date for resolution. Please note: if you opt out of Route insurance, listed at the bottom of the checkout page for $17.18 on our large order, the bakery says it is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen packages.

Gift options limited

Where some online cookie companies are all about the gift, Magnolia Bakery does not offer much that looks particularly like a present. The only items with the word "gift” when we visited were either related to items other than cookies or a gift card for online purchases. Purchasing an online-only gift card would be good for someone already familiar with the product, as it may not be used in store or with third-party delivery companies. The site offers a few options to choose from in order to customize your e-gift card and allows you to write a message with it.

Customer complaints

Magnolia Bakery is not accredited by the BBB and has a "D-” rating for failure to respond to 4 complaints. Online reviews are not related to cookies, though there are concerns about delivery issues. The bakery has a 3.2-star average on Trustpilot, again related to delivery problems or cakes. And yet, another review site had one person claiming, "If you're a dessert lover like me, don't miss out on the delicious delights that Magnolia Bakery has to offer.”

Not enough choices

With only three varieties offered for nationwide shipping and negative reviews about that service, we are hesitant to recommend this company for ordering cookies online. The cookie cost is among the more reasonable, but the overnight shipping and optional insurance make it cost-prohibitive to order a half-dozen cookies. While Magnolia Bakery offers some unique choices, including the only banana pudding cookie we've seen, when it comes to ordering cookies online, you may want to choose a higher-ranked bakery.
