The creator of the original mall cookie store, Debbi Fields began her cookie empire in 1977 with her first store in Palo Alto, California. With the rise of shopping malls in the 1980s, Mrs. Fields became the go-to shopping treat across the country. More than four decades later, their cookies are sold on their website, via catalog, over the phone, and in storefronts. In addition to cookies, the brand also sells brownies, cakes, berries and other tasty treats. It operates 250 franchised stores throughout the world and is based out of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Classic cookie varieties

Mrs. Fields offers baked goodies for all who have a sweet tooth. The cookie flavors are the traditional tried-and-true favorites the bakery has become famous for. In the two-dozen cookie tin, for example, you would receive five semi-sweet chocolate chip cookies, five cinnamon sugar, five triple chocolate, five white chocolate macadamia nut, and four oatmeal raisin walnut. From cookie cakes to sampler crates, there is something for all appetites and budgets. If you are looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, the signature cookie sampler tin at $11.99 provides six of the famous Nibbler bite-size cookies in semi-sweet chocolate and triple chocolate, plus one regular-size frosted round cookie. If you know chocolate chip is your favorite, a box of 12 is $24.99.

Cookie tins and holiday specials

Tins are available in single flavor or variety, nut-free or with nuts. Two dozen of the signature flavors in regular sized cookies are sold in a tin for $49.99. This features fan favorites semi-sweet chocolate, cinnamon sugar, white chocolate macadamia, oatmeal raisin, and triple chocolate. Holiday specials offer a mix of cookies and brownies. The Heart's Content Tin for Valentine's Day packs in 24 Nibblers in four flavors (semi-sweet, triple chocolate, cinnamon sugar, and white chocolate macadamia), a dozen brownies bites in two flavors (double fudge and butterscotch), and two frosted heart cookies for $49.99. Sampler baskets, crates, and cookie towers offer more options for prices ranging from $49.99 up to $199.99. You can order a tub of 126 Nibbler cookies for $99.99 or 12” cookie cake for $44.99.

On the site you will find Deal of the Day, which can offer significant savings if that's the item you want. For example, on the day we looked, it was a Thank You cookie tin of 48 Nibblers cookies for $19.24, marked down from $34.99. You can shop by occasion or by treat type, and the website also breaks down options by price range if you want to stay within your budget. Shipping varies

Shipping costs will vary based on the size of the order and the speed of delivery desired. The Deal of the Day item we mentioned cost $19.24 and shipping ranged from $9.99 to $24.99. Add on the cookie tub and the cost jumps up to as much as $39.99 for next day delivery while the cookie tower shipping was $59.99.

Local pickup option for variety without shipping

If you need the cookies today or desire more variety, you can look for your closest location and order online from a local store for pickup. You can choose from the freshly-made cookies in four categories: classic, Nibblers (smaller cookies), mega cookies (three times the size of the original), and frosted cookies. Flavor varieties include sugar butter, white chocolate macadamia, milk chocolate chip, peanut butter, and sea salt caramel. Online ordering prices range from one classic cookie at $2.99, or a brownie for $4.29 each, to a dozen Nibblers (you choose the flavors) for $11.99. Mega cookies, cookie sandwiches and cookie slices are $5.99. The customizable cookie cakes of all sizes are available to order with your customization. When placing an online order for in-store pickup, you can specify the current day or choose a future day and time. There is no online ordering fee displayed, so this is a great option if you want to make sure your sweet tooth is satisfied upon arrival. Please note, these prices were for a local store we checked out in the Chicago metro area; your store's prices may vary.

Unhappy reviewers

Mrs. Fields is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau, and complaints on the BBB site focus on customer service and shipping issues. It has an "F” rating from the BBB. Trustpilot reviews are limited to just 8 and have many unhappy people, mostly due to shipping and customer service issues over the holidays. Quality feedback is mixed: one online reviewer said the cookies tasted as good as he remembered from his youth in Chicago where he frequented the stores, so he now has them shipped to his home in another state. (Oddly, others complain the recipe has changed and is no longer to their liking.) Regarding returns, the website states that due to the perishable nature of the items sold, returns are not accepted once shipped. Their satisfaction policy listed in the frequently asked questions on their website says they will replace damaged items or packaging if reported as directed.

Skip the shipping and go local

Although Mrs. Fields is a well-known name in the cookie biz, it doesn't rank as our favorite option. The company has gotten its fair share of complaints lately, and shipping fees can get spendy. If you're absolutely set on getting your cookies from Mrs. Fields, we'd recommend placing your order online for in-store pickup near you. Mrs. Fields earns a "just average" rating from us.

Where Can You Find the Best Cookies Online?

When you think of what goes into a cookie, often the ingredients are nothing special on their own. Flour, sugar, butter, eggs, baking soda or powder, salt, and vanilla extract provide the basic building blocks for a cookie. There's something special that occurs when these essential components are mixed together and baked into a small treat. It makes us want to declare, as the Sesame Street character Cookie Monster often did, "Me want cookie!”

Ordering cookies online is a great idea because it's easy, convenient, and offers lots of choices. You can find all kinds of cookies that might not be available near you, and it's simple to compare prices and read reviews before buying. You don't have to leave your home, so you save time and effort. Plus, many websites deliver the cookies straight to your door, and some even let you customize your order to make the perfect cookie for you or as a gift to someone you care about.

Cookie FAQ

Most bakeries have a statement testifying to the freshness of their product. In addition to making them fresh before shipping, many individually wrap their cookies.
Shipping fees vary by company and location, but they usually range from $6.95 to a percentage of the total order. Some bakeries may offer free shipping promotions for stated order amounts or during special events.
Delivery times depend on the bakery and shipping method. Many offer next-day or even same-day delivery for certain locations, but it's always good to order in advance for special occasions.
Yes, most online cookie shops let you include a personalized gift note. Some even include fancy tins or wrapping to make it more like a gift. And, don't forget upgrades - some companies offer the option to include a card, a teddy bear, or even flowers, at checkout.
Upon arrival, check the packaging for specific storage instructions. Each cookie bakery has its own directions online. Some suggest refrigeration while others nix that idea and say that they should be kept at room temperature in an airtight container, depending on the type. Regarding freezing, some cookie bakers encourage it while others reject that method of storage.
Yes! Some bakeries offer kosher, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, or sugar-free cookies. Be sure to read the product descriptions or use site filters to find the right options.
A few online bakeries offer customers the option to customize a message on a cookie cake. Others offer you a decision of which flavors to include in an assortment. But, for the most part, cookie deliveries fall under the "what you see is what you get” category, so you might have to look a little harder if you need something tailored to your event or special occasion.
Fortunately, many online bakeries guarantee their deliveries and will refund or replace your order if it arrives damaged or late. Read the notes at checkout though. Some companies require you to have delivery insurance or they don't take any responsibility for delivery problems. Promptly contact your cookie company's customer service team and be sure to take photos before you throw anything away - they may require those images before you can get a refund or replacement.

Continued from above...

Perfect for a sweet snack or an elaborate dessert, cookies can be simple or elaborate to meet your desired taste, texture, and even purpose. Cookies can even be made into cakes for celebrations, combined with ice cream for a creative dessert sandwich, and even become a vessel for a drink (think cookie shots). These sweet treats typically can reside in a jar on your kitchen counter, ready for you to indulge as the fancy strikes.

Cookies can trace their origin back to 7th Century AD Persia. Now modern-day Iran, this area was the one of the first known to cultivate sugar, thus providing an essential part of the sweet treat. Evolving over the centuries from something simple made from grains, water, and dates for the Egyptians to sustain their journey in the afterlife, to the gourmet goods now sold in the fancy bakeries of big cities, everyone loves cookies.

When looking for a gift or party treat, look no further than the cookie. It does not require serving utensils and is enjoyed by people of all ages. There are countless types of cookie combinations and traditions throughout all cultures. Each country has its favored variations of these baked goods, and then other bakers take those and make their own versions. There is literally a cookie to satisfy everyone's taste buds.

While dietary restrictions can keep some people from readily indulging, advances in baking techniques have allowed those with allergies to enjoy these hand-held desserts in more ways than ever. Gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, kosher, nut-free, sugar-free--the accommodations are in place to make cookies available to anyone with a sweet tooth if you know where to look.

So where can you get the best cookies online? There are several factors to consider to ensure you get the best cookies for your money with the smoothest shopping experience possible:

  • Overall selection. There are countless cookie varieties which can be baked, so it's important to look for the flavor combination to suit your mood.
  • Taste and quality. You want to get the best cookie, whether it's the humble chocolate chip or a more creative combination of unique ingredients to tantalize your taste buds. It's also imperative that the cookies be soft when you expect soft, or crispy when that's the texture you're expecting.
  • Gift-giving options. Since you know your recipient loves cookies, it's important to find the perfect package to convey your heartfelt message. Look for the best presentation or decoration which meets your standards.
  • Customization options. While you can't necessarily tell the bakers what to put in the cookies, you might want to be able to have them decorated a particular way or combine varieties to make a perfect assortment for your intended recipient.
  • Name recognition and reputation. Some names immediately jump to mind when you think of cookies, while others are new on the scene. Consider reviews and reputation when weighing your options.
  • Dietary concerns. While the options are expanding for those who have allergies, not all bakeries are equipped to safely produce cookies to meet those needs. Read the information to make sure your cookies not only taste good and arrive on time but also keep your belly happy.
