Americans have finally started to understand the importance of a good credit score: from 2011 to 2021, the nationwide average increased from 689 to 714! Anything over 700 is considered to be "good" and can be the key to opening doors financially - everything from renting an apartment to securing an auto loan or mortgage may rest on your credit report.
Unfortunately, not everyone understands what goes into a positive credit history. Late payments, applying for multiple credit cards in a short period of time, or even problems with mistaken identity can all lead to a less-than-excellent credit profile. Some people get lured in by the promises of low monthly payments or 0% APR credit cards, only to find themselves drowning in debt.

Sky Blue Credit has dominated the credit repair industry for over three decades. Their all-inclusive pricing for individuals and couples gives you access to faster disputes, unlimited removals and challenges, and excellent coaching from their phenomenal team of experts. This is the only provider in our review to offer a no-questions-asked 90-day satisfaction guarantee and refund policy, but clients are so happy with this service that you probably won't need it. "A+" rated by the BBB and praised by thousands of happy customers, Sky Blue Credit should be the first place you turn for credit repair.
Credit Firm is one of our top picks for credit repair. For one low monthly price of $49.99 (or $89.99 for couples), you'll get every tool in their arsenal for repairing your credit history and improving your score. There's no initial work fee and you can cancel at any time. Even though Credit Firm doesn't have millions of past and current clients, their service is effective and highly-rated by the BBB and customers alike.
The Credit People gets our award for "Most Improved" in the credit repair industry. Their service is competitively priced, and you've got options for month-to-month membership or a one-time fee for six months of work. Clients now rave about how friendly and knowledgeable their reps are, and The Credit People also offers an "unbeatable satisfaction guarantee" for extra peace of mind.
Ovation partners with LendingTree to offer two types of credit repair: DIY and full service. This is the only provider we know of that received a perfect "A+" and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, and most clients give Ovation an equally flawless five-star rating. We've dropped Ovation slightly in our rankings because you may get more for your money with a few other companies, but this is still a great choice overall for reliable credit repair.
Credit Saint is a solid choice for credit repair. They'll help you remove negative items while teaching you how to optimize your financial choices to boost your credit score. This is one of just a few services that have earned a strong rating from the BBB, along with hundreds of positive reviews from clients. Though we'd like to see some data that reflects Credit Saint's successes in improving people's credit reports, we still trust that this provider gets the job done.
MSI Credit offers simplicity in pricing and service: the only decision you need to make is if you're trying to repair your credit as an individual or as a couple, because all of the services here are included in a no-nonsense package. MSI Credit has earned hundreds of five-star ratings from satisfied clients, and while you may get a better refund policy or slightly lower fees with another provider, this is still a business you can count on for effective credit repair.
The Credit Pros offer three plans that cover most aspects of money management, from basic budgeting and credit score tracking to full-service disputes and removals with the credit bureaus. This company is one of a small number with a good rating from the Better Business Bureau, and many clients are happy with the results here. There are a few higher-ranked credit repair services that you should check out first, but The Credit Pros are a reliable choice.
Lexington Law has worked with over eight million clients, repairing credit through tens of millions of removals, challenges and disputes. Monthly pricing is higher than average here, and not all customers feel like the services are worth the investment. This is a trustworthy company and we're not overly concerned about their business practices, but you've got other credit repair services to consider that won't charge quite so much.
Since 2012, Credit Repair has been helping people to get negative items removed from their credit reports: they say that the average client sees a 40-point increase in their credit score in the first six months alone. Although this company's reputation has improved since our last review, it's not quite enough to give them our recommendation. Credit Repair will need to get more open with their pricing and show more positive client feedback first.
Pyramid Credit Repair is one of the newest services in our review, getting its start in 2015. Their website doesn't do a good job of explaining what you can expect for the monthly service fees you pay, and their reputation is similarly vague. At this time, we do not recommend Pyramid for your credit repair plan.
In business since 1998, Credit Repair Consultants claims to have worked with over 20,000 clients to repair their credit. And yet, there's almost no proof that they've helped anyone: blog posts are outdated, social media pages have been virtually silent for over a year, and even the BBB says there's not enough information to give this company a rating. While we like the idea of having three tiers of service to choose from, you're ultimately going to find better results with a more active and reliable credit repair company.
We don't think you'll "go ape" over what Credit Monkey has to offer. This credit repair service is relatively new - which isn't a problem in itself, but when you look closely, you'll see typos and other errors on their website, customer testimonials that seem less than legitimate, and not enough information about how they actually get to work on fixing your credit report. This is not a company we would turn to for effective credit repair, especially since they're much more expensive than the competition.
That's where credit repair services enter the picture. These providers work to dispute items on your credit report that might be inaccurate, unverifiable, or erroneous. Depending on which company you choose, the service might also include cease and desist letters, goodwill letters to help you qualify for credit in the future, credit monitoring to keep you on track, and one-on-one coaching.
You shouldn't expect miraculous, rapid increases in your credit score - most credit repair processes result in a modest increase of about 40 points, though some may bring you up by 100 points or more - but it could be what makes the difference for your financial goals and credit needs.
As you start to explore the possibility of credit repair, you'll soon see that there are many providers hoping to gain your business as a client. Which one is the best for you? Here are a few things to keep in mind as you decide:
