Brooks Brothers Review 1.5 Star Rating

Brooks Brothers

1.5 Star Rating
  • Cost: From $6 to $600

Brooks Brothers has been in business for 200 years - a household name in men's fashion. Their long-standing reputation is one that caters to the upper class; however, when it comes to cufflinks, we suggest you look elsewhere. The store is not accredited and has a "C-" rating from the BBB for failing to respond to multiple complaints filed against them. In addition to their lackluster rating by the BBB, reviews on trustworthy websites are overwhelmingly negative citing poor quality goods and equally bad customer service.

Less than impressive

Your less-than-impressive shopping experience with Brooks Brothers starts with their hard-to-shop website. There is not a direct link on their homepage to their rather small collection of cufflinks. The retailer has around 80 different listings, which doesn't come close to the variety offered by many of the other companies we reviewed. You can narrow your search with different filters including fit, size, color, pattern, collar, cuff, style, type, sleeve, material, collection, fabric, and item type. While their collection is much smaller, they do have some interesting options including many with nautical and patriotic American themes. While their prices range from $6-$600, the average price seems to be between $75-$180.

Shipping costs vary

Brooks Brothers shipping costs vary based on the price of your order and shipping location. Shipping starts at $5.95 for orders under $25 and tops out at $17.95 for orders over $300. Increased prices are also available for expedited shipping. One nice perk is that they will send any U.S. order in a gift box and will print a message on the gift receipt at no additional cost.

Returns accepted within 60 days

According to their website, Brooks Brothers will gladly accept a return of merchandise in its original condition within 60 days if accompanied by the original receipt. If you do not have the receipt, a store credit will be given for the lowest price currently listed for the item. Exchanges are not accepted. When returning items by mail, there is a $7.00 postage fee that will be deducted from your refund, unless you use a Brooks Brothers Credit Card, and then returns are free. Items ineligible for return include any item 70% off or greater, monogrammed or altered merchandise, special ordered or Made to Measure clothing, and Head of the Charles merchandise. In case, like us, you are not an expert in yacht racing, Head of the Charles is a Regatta of which Brooks Brothers is the official apparel sponsor. So now you know.

Negative reviews

Overall, the most concerning issue to us is the overwhelming number of negative reviews on trusted third-party websites. There have been reports of shipment of incorrect merchandise, repeated unanswered emails and calls from customer service, and poor quality products. These negative reviews and the lack of options when buying cufflinks are why Brooks Brothers winds up toward the bottom of our rankings.

Where is the Best Place to Buy Cufflinks?

Cufflinks can be both a classy and fun addition to a dress shirt. They come in all shapes and styles. Some might have the wearer's initials, feature a favorite sports team, include gemstones, have a unique pattern, or come in a solid color. Cufflinks can be made of leather, fabric, stone, glass, metal, or other special materials.

Cufflinks became popular at the end of the 18th century. They were initially only worn by men in the middle and upper classes, but mass distribution in later years made them more affordable for all. Today, cufflinks add personality to men's apparel and are a good way to accessorize a dress shirt. Cufflinks make for great gifts for father's day, a graduation, wedding, birthday, or other significant celebrations.

Cufflink Store FAQ

Cufflinks are essentially removable buttons, used to keep shirt cuffs closed. They come in a wide range of styles, materials and price points.
If you're wearing a dress shirt with French cuffs - the traditional style for black tie events, for example - you'll definitely need cufflinks. Why? These cuffs don't come with buttons sewn in, making cufflinks a must to keep your cuffs closed and tidy. You can wear cufflinks with cuffs that do have buttons, if you like the way they look!
That's entirely up to your preferences. Most cufflinks come in sizes ranging from 0.5" to 1" .
Metals used in cufflinks tend to be .925 sterling silver, stainless steel, palladium, 14k or 18k gold. Some may use gemstones for added elegance, or have intricate, eye-catching designs. You can also get cufflinks made of silk, leather, or bone.
Start by having your cuffs long and unfolded. Next, fold the cuffs back so that the holes are lined up. Place your cufflinks through all four layers of fabric (i.e. the folded-back cuffs on both sides of your wrists) and secure the backing mechanism. It's that easy!
Cufflinks should be considered as pieces of jewelry, and as such you may want to consider having them professionally cleaned from time to time by a jeweler. Otherwise, metal cufflinks can be kept tidy with a soft-bristled toothbrush, mild soap, and a cotton cloth to dry them before storage. If your cufflinks have gemstones, you want to avoid moisture and abrasives and just polish them with a soft, dry cloth.
A cufflink box is a nice way to store and organize them. These boxes have separate compartments to prevent scratches, and they keep your cufflinks out of direct sunlight and heat that can damage them. Even if you don't buy a specific box for your cufflinks, store them in a dry place and avoid using plastic bags or containers that can make them tarnish more quickly.
That's easy: you want the world's best selection at the best prices. It can be hard to find cufflinks in your typical brick-and-mortar jewelry store or department store, especially if you're looking for a novel design or something extremely high-end. There are many reputable retailers of cufflinks online today, who deliver an amazing array of cufflinks and offer an impressive level of customer service. Be sure to see what other clients have to say about any cufflink store you're considering, as well as the retailer's BBB listing, if you want added reassurance that you've chosen a reliable company for your purchase.

Continued from above...

With online shopping, it is easy to find a variety of cufflinks for sale. Some sellers let you customize the cufflink shape and style completely, while others have hundreds of unique already-made options to choose from. Buying online lets customers see all their options at once rather than spending time going from store-to-store. It also helps to compare pricing so that you know you aren't overpaying.

Some of the factors you should consider when buying cufflinks include:

  • Cost. Finding nice cufflinks does not need to come with an extravagant price tag. You should be able to find something nice while also getting fair prices. Compare costs with other cufflink retailers to see how they match up.
  • Selection. You'll want a cufflink retailer that offers plenty of color, shape, and style options. You'll be able to find what you're looking for faster this way.
  • Return Policy. If your purchase does not look as you expected, doesn't match your shirt, or meet expectations for any reason, you'll need to be able to return the cufflinks and get your money back.
