Sugar Coated Cupcakes is a mobile cupcake company that offers luxury cupcakes and macarons. Unlike many cupcake subscription clubs, which are run by companies that have established traditional stores, Sugar Coated Cupcakes is a "pop-up” store that partners with local wineries, breweries, and coffee shops. Sugar Coated Cupcakes promises only to use local ingredients to support farmers and growers where they've popped up last. The service also offers vegan and gluten-free cupcakes for those with dietary restrictions. However, with a limited shipment area, this club is only for people who live in or around its California pop-up locations. You can't receive cupcakes from Sugar Coated Cupcakes if you're anywhere else in the US.
Pick how many months of cupcakes you want
Joining Sugar Coated Cupcakes' Cupcake of the Month Club is simple. You just need to pick the length of your subscription from 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month payment cycles. Each monthly package comes with 6 cupcakes in two flavors. Sugar Coated Cupcakes offers both a menu for the current year and the upcoming year to show you what flavors you can expect when you subscribe. For example, we saw Chocolate Peanut Butter, Espresso, Coffee Caramel, Winter Spice Cake, Christmas Crack, Jelly Donut, Chocolate Hibiscus, and many more. There were no repeat flavors throughout the calendar year.
Plenty of unique flavors but doesn't ship everywhere
There are plenty of cupcake flavors to choose from on the Sugar Coated Cupcakes menu, but there's one snag: the pop-up company does not ship everywhere. Right now the website doesn't say as such (however, the Sugar Coated Cupcakes customer service team let us know they plan to update the site based on our conversation), which can be pretty confusing when you try to sign up. Be aware: Sugar Coated Cupcakes will let you pay for the cupcake club even if you're outside the shipping area. The payment portal does not ask for your shipping details before you're charged. However, this service is only for those living in California (and then only certain areas of the state too). You can see if your area is served by Sugar Coated Cupcakes by trying to buy individual cupcakes from Sugar Coated Cupcakes' menu where you have to put in your zip code to proceed. The site will tell you that the "Preorder and Delivery” service does not ship to your location if you can't get cupcakes from Sugar Coated Cupcakes.
Great flavor selection
If you are lucky enough to live where Sugar Coated Cupcakes will ship, you can expect flavors like:
Pricing from $81 to $309 per period
For the Sugar Coated Cupcakes subscription club, the pricing is different depending on how many months you want to subscribe. The costs are a little higher than competitors. Here's what we found:
No refunds of any kind
There is no leniency or customer support available with Sugar Coated Cupcakes. Payments are stated to be nonrefundable no matter what you buy. There are no refunds for partially used periods of shipments for the Cupcake of the Month Club, and any questions about reshipment or refunds will be handled on a case-by-case basis. However, the case usually is that Sugar Coated Cupcakes won't be giving your money back. So, if you're not sure about your area being served by their shipping policy don't put your credit card details in.
Decent scores, but not a lot of buzz
Despite the lackluster refund policy, Sugar Coated Cupcakes has a decent reputation online. The company shows an "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau as well as a handful of 5-star ratings on review sites like Yelp or Facebook. Notably, there are only one or two reviews on some sites, making it hard to gauge just how popular this pop-up cupcake store is. Facebook had the most reviews (19 total) and showed praise for the unique flavors and convenience when shopping in person. However, we struggled to find reviews for the Cupcake of the Month Club specifically.
Needs to offer shipments to a larger area
With solid reviews balanced against the lack of a return policy, Sugar Coated Cupcakes was about average. However, when we took into account the fact that most customers can't get this cupcake subscription club due to the limitations in shipping, Sugar Coated Cupcakes doesn't really compete. While the flavors sound amazing, and most customers give the bakery itself high marks, the site has little support for customers and doesn't ship to major cities around the US. For this reason, Sugar Coated Cupcakes earns a lower rating, but a higher recommendation if you do happen to live within the delivery area.
Watching the latest episode of Cupcake Wars and starting to feel left out of the fun? While you can get some tasty treats from your local grocery store or go out to a specialty bake shop to get your sugar fix, it's harder to get those really good cupcakes from the comfort of your home (we get it, baking it from a boxed mix just isn't the same).
Cupcake subscription clubs also make fantastic gifts for a sweet-lover in your life. Whether you're looking to give them cupcakes from boutique bakeries, award-winning cupcakeries, or a chance to try as many frostings as they can, this gift will be a winner.
These subscription-based services send you regular shipments of cupcakes right to the comfort of your home. The number of cupcakes and frequency is totally up to you in most services. So whether you want a sampler with tons of flavors or a pack of favorites for an upcoming birthday bash, a cupcake subscription club is a great way to get more sweets into your life pronto. You don't need to worry about ordering every month: once you sign up, you just need to sit back, relax, and let the cupcakes come to you.
After all, sometimes, you don't have time to hunt down your local novelty bakery. Don't worry, you won't need to run out and buy piping bags and cupcake tins to have that hand-made quality cupcake you're craving - you can join a cupcake club instead.
Cupcakes come in as many varieties as cake (just smaller). Whether you're a frosting fiend or a red velvet superfan, there are tons of cupcakes to try. With increasingly exciting flavors and combos - we've seen those maple-bacon bourbon treats on baking competitions, yum! - you've got to try them all. From classic flavors like creamy chocolate, confetti, or just vanilla or the next great flavor like key lime, s'mores, or a rum-soaked Bahama Mama cupcake, there's a cupcake subscription club out there that can deliver.
