The Best Curtain Stores

Where is the Best Place to Buy Curtains Online?

Windows are one of the first places your eyes are drawn to when you enter a room. And one of the easiest and most noticeable elements of a room are the curtains that adorn them. Besides the obvious functions of adding privacy and blocking out light, curtains can make a huge difference in a room from a design standpoint.

Curtains could sport a unique pattern to stand out, or complement the décor with a subtle touch of color to tie everything in the room together. However, finding the right patterns and colors at a local store can be frustrating and unpredictable - which is why many people have turned to buying their curtains online.

Top Consumer Reviews Best-In-Class Blue Ribbon Award

Curtarra is a fairly new store, founded in 2020. They began doing custom curtains for just a few clients and grew into a flourishing business. Curtarra prides themselves on providing the highest quality experience for people by carrying a rich selection of fabrics and offering guidance from professional design consultants. Each curtain is handcrafted and meticulously inspected to make sure there are no errors in the craftsmanship.

All custom orders

The unique thing about Curtarra is that all purchases are custom. You aren't going to browse through a selection of hundreds of pre-made curtain designs and sizes, but rather you will go through the process of selecting each piece you want for your curtains and have them made from scratch. First you'll browse through different styles to develop a general idea of what you want your curtains to look like. You can request swatches of different materials for free to test them out against your wall color and furniture. Next, you'll measure your windows and submit the size you need, then Curtarra will get to work fulfilling your order.

Detailed information

You'll undoubtedly be able to curate exactly the type of curtains you want since you can choose blackout curtains, linen curtains, sheer curtains, or extra-long curtains. Most styles come in at least 8-11 colors, so hopefully you'd find something that fits your needs. Most colors are more neutral in nature, though, so you won't find anything like a bright pink or neon green for a kids room. You can also select the type of header you want and read detailed information about the fabric weight, amount of light blocking, max width and length, how to care for the curtains, and more. You know exactly what you're getting from Curtarra when you order here.

Transparent, upfront pricing

If you're willing to sign up for Curtarra's email list, they'll send you a code for $50 off your first order. Curtarra promises that their prices are much better than if you were to get custom curtains made at an offline store. We like that you don't have to get a bid from them or wait on pricing, but rather you see what you'll pay as soon as you make your selections and put in the size of the curtains you need. This upfront pricing is greatly appreciated and helps us trust Curtarra's practices. You'll also get free 7-day shipping, so you don't have to worry about an added cost there.

Best Curtain Stores

Refunds are rare

Since all curtains here are custom-made, Curtarra generally doesn't give refunds on orders. However, if there happen to be glaring quality issues, Curtarra guarantees that they will take care of them. If you just don't like your curtains and absolutely can't live with them, Curtarra will let you send them back, but you'll only get a 70% refund. This seems fair since customers know exactly what they're getting when they order here.

Customers love them

We love seeing that customers can leave reviews for the individual types of curtains. Almost all of them have 5 stars, so that's amazing. Unfortunately, they don't have a rating by the Better Business Bureau, but their high reviews on their website and other third-party websites reassure us that this is definitely a top choice for purchasing curtains. Everyone says their service is fantastic, their curtains are high quality and beautiful, and pricing is excellent.

Don't hesitate

When purchasing curtains, if you're able to get them custom made, we recommend going that route. You will ensure that they are the perfect size, high quality material, exactly the color you want, and have a header that fits your style. For those reasons, we are thrilled with Curtarra and have given them our highest rating.

Etsy Review 4.5 Star Rating

Etsy

4.5 Star Rating
  • Lots of free shipping offers
  • Frequent sales
  • Purchase protection
  • Support small businesses
  • "A+” Better Business Bureau rating

Etsy is a fun platform that hosts thousands of independent creators that sell things from jewelry and clothing to electronics and baby products. You can find unique items here and have the satisfaction of knowing that you're supporting small businesses. Etsy may not be the first place you think to look for curtains, but they actually have over 5,000 options for you to choose from.

All the curtains you can imagine

To start narrowing down the thousands of choices for curtains on Etsy, they have categories for bedroom, living room, kitchen, boho, blackout, and linen curtains. If that's not enough, you can set a price range and shipping preferences. If you know you want a floral pattern, go ahead and search for floral curtains. Or maybe your daughter wants dinosaur curtains for her room. You'll find plenty of options. The sky is the limit on Etsy since so many creative people come here to sell their products. Based on seller ratings, prices, and appearance, you can scroll through your options and start picking your favorites.

Lots of helpful photos

Most sellers have their shops set up with lots of pictures you can browse to see the product in different living spaces, view all the available colors (sometimes 40+), see the material up close, and check out all the design options they have. You'll pick the color and length you want, and it's as simple as that. You'll see the price of your curtains and you can check out as soon as you're confident in your choices.

Great product details

Alongside a plethora of pictures, all Etsy sellers usually have quite lengthy descriptions of their products that answer all the most frequently asked questions someone might have about the item. You'll see if it's handmade, what the materials are, sustainability features, refund policies, and everything you need to understand about what you're interested in buying. For curtains, they'll explain how to measure your windows, how to care for your curtains, and when to expect them to arrive.

Best Curtain Stores

Standout sellers

Etsy does their best to first recommend their star sellers to customers. This means that people who are consistently selling and receiving high reviews from customers will stand out as the first options in your searches. A lot of times they'll be tagged with a "Bestseller” badge so that you know this is a well-liked creator. You can read thousands of reviews on the product you're interested in and see what people say about the promptness of shipping and communication with the seller. If you find someone that is highly rated on all counts, you're sure to have a great experience buying curtains from them.

Protection promise

In the unlikely event that something goes drastically wrong with your Etsy order, you can use Etsy's purchase protection program to rectify the issue. After trying to work with the seller themselves, you can open a case with Etsy and they'll step in to get the issue resolved. Whether this will be in the form of a refund or a replacement depends entirely on the situation.

Great choice for curtains

Etsy receives an "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau. Even more importantly, their star sellers often have tens of thousands of customer reviews and this is the best way to gauge whether or not to make a purchase. We have personally had great success shopping at Etsy for years and are big fans of the platform and the fun products you can find here. If you find a seller that makes lovely curtains to fit your windows, we wouldn't hesitate to move forward with a purchase here.

Wayfair Review 4 Star Rating

Wayfair

4 Star Rating
  • Free shipping over $35
  • Over 50,000 results for curtains
  • 30-day return policy
  • Reliable product reviews
  • Hundreds of brands
  • "A+” Better Business Bureau rating

Wayfair is one of the world's largest home retailers. They serve over `22.3 million customers worldwide with a supply of over 40 million products. This store is like a catch all for anything you might dream up for your home that you need on a budget. Wayfair has the longest list of curtain-supplier brands of any other store we've seen and over 50,000 options for curtains, so saying that this store has a big selection is an understatement.

Curtains for every occasion

As with many other stores with a smorgasbord of curtain options, Wayfair has their website down to a science to make it easy to find what you want. In addition to filtering for basic things like price, brand, size, filtration type, and material, you can shop by holiday and special occasion. If you're someone who likes to change out all your decor for Valentine's Day, the 4th of July, or Christmas, Wayfair can supply the curtains to make it happen. You can shop by theme (wildlife, sports, nautical), life stage, room location, top college picks, and more. The options are so extensive that it's nearly overwhelming.

Clear product descriptions

We noticed that for any given curtain style, you usually have at least a few color choices and a few different sizes. Wayfair is really clear about which items are low in stock and exactly how many are left. They also show what items are out of stock, but have an email list you can get on in case it comes back and you want to be alerted. There are multiple pictures of each product with detailed product descriptions about how they hang, how well they filter light, if they have any noise canceling effects, the weight, dimension, and all other specifications. There shouldn't be any surprises about your curtains when they arrive in the mail.

Screaming deals

Besides having an insane number of product options, Wayfair is well-liked because they offer so many great deals and sales. Most things are extremely affordable and marked down, sometimes on top of a holiday sale for 15% - 20% off sitewide. In addition, Wayfair shows open box pricing, so if you're okay buying a returned product that's still in perfect condition, you can get it for even less. If you're spending at least $35 at Wayfair, you'll get free shipping too.

Best Curtain Stores

You pay for return shipping

Wayfair accepts returns within 30 days as long as your items are in original, undamaged condition. If you buy open-box curtains, they will be final sale, so just be aware of that. Otherwise, you're eligible for a full refund for returned merchandise (minus the cost of shipping) and you can start the process directly from their website.

Highly rated products

The Better Business Bureau gives Wayfair an "A+” rating. If you're basing the reliability of this company on their customer reviews from third-party sites, you might turn the other direction and run. However, in Wayfair's case, it seems that only disgruntled customers are turning to the internet to voice their complaints. If you look at individual product reviews on Wayfair's site, you'll see that there are sometimes tens of thousands of reviews for any given set of curtains. In most cases, they are rated incredibly high, meaning that people like the quality, appearance, and cost of their window treatments. This is a better gauge of how Wayfair performs in this case. The company has definitely had their ups and downs over the years in the public arena, but there's a reason they are so successful and frequented online.

Good place to score a deal

Sometimes, all you're looking for is a simple selection of elegant drapes that you can customize to fit your windows perfectly. If that's what you're going for, Wayfair will be way over the top for you. However, if you have time to browse through a huge inventory of curtains and want to save some money, you'll undoubtedly be able to score a deal at Wayfair. Because of this, we've given them a good rating.

Target Review 4 Star Rating

Target

4 Star Rating
  • Augmented reality lets you see curtains how they'd look in your space
  • 365-day return policy
  • Frequent sales
  • Free shipping over $35
  • Over 3,000 curtain options
  • "A” Better Business Bureau rating

Target is known for their trendy, upscale-ish merchandise that comes at a low cost. Their slogan - "Expect more. Pay less” - points to this. You can shop online and find hundreds of options for electronics, home furnishings, toys, clothing, groceries, movies, health and beauty products, party supplies, and other household essentials. Their selection of curtains alone offers over 3,000 options, proving that Target really does have it all.

Trendy designs

You'll find very trend-forward products at Target, so you know that your selection will always include the latest styles and ideas from well-known interior design companies. To narrow down the selection of curtains here, customers can sort by pattern, color, light filtration, type, length, and brand. Target doesn't make and sell their own curtains, but they have a host of brands they distribute including Barefoot Bungalow, Dream Factory, Habitat, Lush Decor, Outdoor Decor, Pillowfort, Waverly, and many others.

Great prices

One of the reasons Target is such a popular store is because they always keep their prices affordable. They often have in-store coupons or run sales on their items. We noticed that many of the curtains were on sale and if you're spending over $35 here, you'll get free shipping. We noticed that some curtain panels are as inexpensive as $30, so you really don't have to worry about overspending at Target (unless you keep adding "just one more thing” to your cart...).

Best Curtain Stores

Get your curtains in no time

Target has mastered the ease of product delivery for customers. Most likely you live pretty close to one of their locations, and some stores offer same-day delivery. You could always do a 2-hour in-store pickup if the curtains you want are at your local Target, or you can opt for shipping. Whichever choice you make, you'll have your curtains up and brightening your room in no time.

Valuable product information

For each style of curtain you see, you'll be able to read customer reviews on the product. Most of them have quite a few, so this will be the most valuable information you have when deciding if Target's curtains are worth the money. You'll also be able to see the curtains from different angles and in different rooms to get the best view of them. You can read all the details about the curtains, how to care for them, and get tips on measuring your windows. Target also has a cool feature that allows you to "see it in your space” so you can take a picture of the room and window you're dressing and see with augmented reality what the curtains would look like.

365-day return window

With most purchases at Target, including curtains, you'll get a generous 365-day return window. This can be done by mailing the item back or returning it at your local Target. It couldn't be easier or more convenient, so you have nothing to lose if you aren't 100% satisfied with your curtains.

Best Curtain Stores

Target is a safe bet

You'll find plenty of disgruntled customers who have left negative reviews about their shopping experience with Target. Some of these related to an in-store experience that took place in one of their over 1,890 stores somewhere in the US. This is a huge corporation, so there are bound to be customer service issues and people complaining about a plethora of different scenarios. However, overall Target pulls through with quality products, has a smooth pickup and return policy, and offers great prices. They also receive an "A” rating from the Better Business Bureau.

Good budget-friendly choice

If you're looking for a good selection of quality curtains that are ready-made and able to quickly ship to you for a good price, Target is a good place to shop. There's a reason this store is a favorite of many, so you really can't go wrong buying curtains here. Target has not quite earned our top rating, but still ranks above many other curtain retailers.

Half Price Drapes Review 3.5 Star Rating

Half Price Drapes

3.5 Star Rating
  • Family-owned
  • Five free fabric swatches
  • 10% off first order with email signup
  • Free shipping
  • 30-day return policy
  • "A+” Better Business Bureau rating

Half Price Drapes is a family-owned business that began in 2005. They are based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and have grown from a small storefront to a booming e-commerce site. They provide both made to order and ready-made curtains for customers across North America. Half Price Drapes is committed to making sure people don't have to choose between quality and price when they are selecting window treatments for their home.

Shop with ease

There are a few ways you can go about ordering curtains from Half Price Drapes. You could browse their categories like lounge embossed velvet, french linen, tiger striped, or performance, or just scroll through the different designs and find a vibe that you resonate with. Another option is just to go through their colors and fabric swatches and find the ones that would match your needs the best. You can always order up to 5 free swatches if you want to see them in-person before pulling the trigger with an online purchase. Once you've chosen a color and fabric, you'll decide on the header style you like best. From there you'll input the size of your window and choose your lining (sheer, unlined, or blackout).

Curtains, shades, and decor, oh my

If you want curtains in some rooms of the house, but shades or valances in others, we like that Half Price Drapes has options for it all. They have a good selection of materials, designs, colors, and sizes for shades if you prefer those on some windows. You can also buy hardware for your curtains here like drapery pin hooks, rings, brackets, and curtain rods. They also sell cushion covers and table linens, which could be worth looking into if you're starting over decorating a living room/dining area and want to coordinate all your accent colors.

Quick shipping

Once you've added all your specifications for the curtains or shades you want, you'll see the total purchase price upfront. All orders ship free from Half Price Drapes. If you are requesting a custom order, it will ship within 7-10 business days of placing the order. Ready-made curtains will be in the mail 1-3 business days from the date of purchase and usually delivered within 3-7 days.

Best Curtain Stores

Return policy varies based on product

If you change your mind about your curtains or find an error in the way they were made, you'll be able to get at least a partial refund. If you reach out to Half Price Drapes and they agree that there was a defect in workmanship, they'll replace your curtains at no cost as long as it's within 30 days. For ready-made items, you can return them within 30 days for a refund, less a 10% handling fee after you request an RMA. Lastly, if you purchased custom curtains from Half Price Drapes, you can return them within 30 days, but understandably, you'll only receive 40% of the purchase price back.

Good reviews overall

Half Price Drapes shows that they have over 36,000 5-star reviews on their website, but we are skeptical of this. You can actually read only 9 reviews total that were placed within the last few days. Where the real reviews are is on their individual products, so this is the best indicator of quality. The company has an "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau, but some of their customer reviews elsewhere are just "meh”. Overall people are happy with their purchases, but some people have had a hard time making returns or dealing with customer service.

Solid option

We don't see any reason not to order from Half Price Drapes, but they aren't rated quite as high as some other companies in our review simply because they have competitors with slightly better feedback overall. Half Price Drapes has a good selection, easy buying process, and decent pricing, so they've earned a solid rating from us.

Kohl's Review 3 Star Rating

Kohl's

3 Star Rating
  • Free shipping with $49 purchase
  • Long list of brands
  • Unfiltered customer reviews
  • 180-day return policy
  • Frequent sales and discount codes
  • Over 3,800 results for curtains
  • "A” Better Business Bureau rating

Kohl's has well over 1,100 retail stores throughout the United States and best of all, an online store with all their products at your fingertips. If you've visited one of their stores, it seems that clothing is their bread and butter, but they have a huge assortment of beauty products and home goods as well. The company began in 1927 when a Polish immigrant opened a corner grocery store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, so it's impressive that they've grown to be the retail giant that they are today.

Brands from A-Z

Unlike many of the other companies in our review, Kohl's doesn't have their own curtains made in-house. They're a distributor that sells a host of brands like Williams Sonoma, Martha Stewart, Harper Lane, Scott Living, Tommy Bahama, Urban Loft, and many others. Mixed into the listings of curtains you'll also find some shades and blinds. There are over 3,800 products, so luckily Kohl's lets you sort their products by length, width, light filtration, color, trend, pattern, brand, and price.

"Mishmash” describes the selection

The selection of curtains at Kohl's feels random and less straightforward than at some of our highest-rated curtain stores. There's nothing wrong with their selection and many of them have great reviews, but the assortment is a bit of a mishmash and it might take longer to find something that you like the look of and that also fits the window you're dressing.

Best Curtain Stores

Lots of design variety

Many of the curtain styles come in a variety of colors, so if you're happy with the size and brand of a curtain design you find, you'll probably have a few choices as far as the color too. Some are plain, neutral colors, while others are bright with wild patterns. Each product is listed with all of its features, so you should have plenty of information about the differences between products if you review all the fine print.

Generous return policy

Kohl's blows many of their competitors out of the water with their 180-day return policy. Most products can be returned within this timeframe with or without a receipt. This should give you more than enough time to decide if your curtains are keepers or not.

Score good deals

One reason people like Kohl's is that you can usually get great deals there. It's not uncommon to find a lot of things on sale or earn Kohl's Cash to save on your next purchase. At the time of this review, Kohl's had a pop-up coupon on their site for 20% off your purchase. On top of this, you'll get free shipping if you spend over $49, so if you're on a tight budget, Kohl's is a safe place to start on your search for curtains.

Best Curtain Stores

Individual product reviews

Since all the curtains you find will be from a variety of brands, it makes sense that quality and customer satisfaction might vary with each product. Kohl's lets customers leave unfiltered reviews about all their products, so be sure to refer to these when you're viewing any given product. People can give the curtains a 1-5 star rating and leave comments about the reason for their ratings too.

Varying customer experiences

Kohl's has an "A” rating from the Better Business Bureau. Customer reviews are mixed, but this is often the case with a retailer this big. Some people may have had a bad in-store experience in another state, which will mostly be irrelevant to you purchasing curtains online. The best thing to do is check out the product reviews on the curtains you're considering and use that as your guide when making a purchase.

Not our top choice

Overall, Kohl's is a good place to look for basic curtains if you want to save some money. You might not always find the size you want in the color you fell in love with or vice-versa, so don't set your expectations too high here. If you just need something to get the job done and don't mind sorting through a massive amount of curtain options, then give Kohl's a look. Otherwise, this isn't our top choice for purchasing curtains.

Walmart Review 3 Star Rating

Walmart

3 Star Rating
  • Over 1,000 curtain options
  • Inexpensive curtains as low as $10
  • Free shipping on orders over $35
  • 90-day return policy
  • Hundreds of customer reviews
  • Same-day pickup options
  • Cancel anytime

Walmart is a multinational retail chain headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. With over 10,500 stores worldwide, Walmart is one of the most easily recognized and frequented stores. The retail giant was founded by brothers in 1962 and has grown to be the world's largest company by revenue. Walmart is a one-stop shop for many people since they have groceries, clothing, electronics, party supplies, games, and nearly everything else you could think of.

User-friendly site

Since Walmart is home to so many products, it's no surprise that there are well over 1,000 ready-made options for curtains alone. They make it easy to refine your search, so if you know what color you want, how much light filtration, a price range you want to stay in, the hanging style, material, and pattern, it will get you started on your search for the perfect window treatment.

Works for a tight budget

Walmart is known for their extremely low prices. No one really expects to get the trendiest or highest quality items from this store, but people appreciate that they have a huge selection of decent items that are as affordable as ever. For example, there are blackout curtain panels for as low as $10 if you want something simple that isn't flashy. You really can't get more budget-friendly than Walmart.

Best Curtain Stores

Free shipping and pickup options

For orders over $35, Walmart offers free 2-day shipping. If you need your curtains even faster and Walmart happens to have the ones you want in-stock at their store near you, you can do a same-day pickup for your online order and have your windows decorated ASAP. How easy is that?

Read customer reviews

Since Walmart quality can be hit and miss, be sure to read through the reviews from customers on the curtains you're interested in. Walmart is so popular that you'll likely find hundreds or even thousands of reviews on a given product. People will let you know how their curtains held up over time, how the workmanship was, if they're easy to clean, and any other relevant information to help you make a wise buying decision.

90 days to change your mind

If your Walmart curtains arrive and you decide you aren't a big fan, Walmart's standard return policy allows you to either send them back in the mail or return them in-store for a full refund within 90 days of purchase. Of course, they'll need to be in new, unused condition in order to qualify.

Best Curtain Stores

Refer to product ratings

Interestingly, Walmart is listed as "not rated” by the Better Business Bureau. Their customer reviews are all over the place, so like we mentioned earlier, your most reliable gauge of quality will be to review product reviews on the curtains themselves. For the most part, Walmart is well-liked by customers and they provide a good experience and are generous with rectifying issues with products.

Good, basic option

Although you won't get the most breathtaking, luxurious curtains from Walmart, they're a quick and easy option if you need something basic. You can be reassured that you'll get a good deal here and you'll have plenty of ways to get the job done. Walmart isn't our favorite curtain retailer, but they aren't a bad choice if you need to save money and find curtains that will work for your home.

Bed Bath & Beyond Review 3 Star Rating

Bed Bath & Beyond

3 Star Rating
  • From $10 to $421
  • Over 6,500 curtains
  • Free shipping over $35
  • 30-day return policy
  • "A+” Better Business Bureau rating

Bed Bath & Beyond is a widely recognized name in the arena of home goods. Their hundreds of stores have dotted the country for years. That is, until they filed for bankruptcy in April of 2023 and liquidated all of their stores.

Focus on rebranding

They've since been acquired by Overstock (now Beyond, Inc.) and they are focusing on rebranding and growing after a rocky few years. Despite the somewhat messy-sounding transitions going on in the background, Bed Bath & Beyond has a huge selection of furniture, rugs, bedding, lighting, home improvement, and so much more. Their huge selection of curtains is just a small taste of what this store has to offer.

Thousands of options

There are over 6,500 options for curtains at Bed Bath & Beyond. So if you have an idea in mind of what material and design you want, you'll save yourself a lot of time here. We did notice that over 2,800 curtain designs were out of stock though, so even though you can see over 6,500 styles, you can't necessarily purchase them all right away. You can also sort the selection of curtains by customer ratings, brand, price, length, filtration, color, material, style, fabric care, and many other specific details.

Best Curtain Stores

All curtains on sale

Every single set of curtains from Bed Bath & Beyond is marked as being on sale. They often mark down their products, so it isn't necessarily a huge deal or a temporary thing you need to jump on. But rather it's a way for them to advertise their pricing and appear cheaper than their competitors. There are a lot of varying details when it comes to buying curtains, but for what it's worth, their lowest marked curtains available were $10 and their most expensive ones were $421.

Price drop alerts

If you sign up for emails, you'll get a 20% off coupon for a single item. This is a great way to save a bit on your curtain purchase. None of their options are extremely expensive, but if you've got your eye on something that is a little out of your budget, we recommend taking advantage of Bed Bath & Beyond's emails and getting price drop alerts. This way you can wait a while and see if the price goes down at all. Other options for alerts include low stock and new reviews.

30 days for returns

If you spend over $35 at Bed Bath & Beyond, you'll get free shipping. Once your curtains arrive, make sure they fit and look the way you hoped. If not, don't panic. You have 30 days to send them back for a full refund as long as the curtains are in new, unused condition. You will be responsible for return shipping, but they don't charge restocking fees.

Best Curtain Stores

Bad customer reviews

Bed Bath & Beyond has been around since 1971. They've established themselves as a legitimate, large-scale retailer. However, they've hit some bumps in the road over the years, and they've paid the price in customer satisfaction. Even though the Better Business Bureau gives them an "A+” rating, customers have a lot of complaints regarding customer service, shipping promptness, and order errors. It's helpful to just go off of product reviews in this case to make a good judgment about whether or not to buy something here, although unfortunately even those are pretty scarce on their selection of curtains.

Needs some time

Bed Bath & Beyond needs some time to get back on their feet. We would never want to recommend a place that has shown a pattern of negligent business practices and doesn't follow through with customer orders. Overall, Bed Bath & Beyond has a big selection of curtains that we're happy with, but at this time we aren't sure about the quality of their products or that you'll have a satisfactory customer experience here. Because of this, Bed Bath & Beyond hasn't earned one of our best ratings, and you may want to start your curtain-shopping at one of the higher-ranked retailers on our list.

Straightforward design process

The last options you'll have before you check out will be to decide if you want a single or double panel, input your measurements (they have guides for measurements on the website), select the lining you want (unlined, privacy, blackout, or privacy + interlining), and add any hardware you need. It's a very straightforward process and all the options for curtains are very appealing and seem high quality.

Pricey retailer

If you're dressing multiple windows in your house, be aware that you'll easily spend thousands of dollars on curtains from The Shade Store. This is not an inexpensive option by any stretch of the imagination. The only "great” deal you'll be getting is free shipping. We've read reviews from people spending anywhere from $20k - $45k on purchases here. If you have the money for it, then why not? `But spending this much on curtains may not be obtainable for many people.

No returns

The Shade Store offers a satisfaction guarantee rather than a return policy. This states that if your measurements were off and you ordered curtains that are too large, they may be able to cut them down. In the event that the curtains are too small or you simply don't like them, your best offer will be a 40% off discount code towards purchasing new products. If The Shade Store made a mistake on their end, they will replace the product at no extra charge.

Disappointing customer service

There are hundreds of testimonials you can read on The Shade Store's website. However, they are posted by the company, so you won't see anything even remotely critical. The Shade Store has an "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau, but their reviews on third-party sites are slightly concerning. People are often very disappointed in customer service when they have an issue with their order. Some people say their curtains were mismeasured and installation took significantly longer than expected. It feels like The Shade Store wants to wash their hands of dealing with a customer once an order has been placed.

We need more from The Shade Store

We would hope that people spending so much money on curtains would be thrilled with their purchases and well taken care of. This doesn't seem to be the case in quite a few scenarios, which is something of a red flag. The Shade Store has great potential and beautiful products that are easy to customize, but their prices make this store a non-option for many people. Because of this, The Shade Store hasn't earned a very high rating from us.

Pottery Barn Review 2 Star Rating

Pottery Barn

2 Star Rating
  • 30-day return policy
  • Over 75 curtain styles
  • Free shipping
  • "A+” Better Business Bureau rating

Pottery Barn is a posh retailer that sells all types of furniture, home decor, art, bedroom sets, storage solutions, lighting, and holiday-specific products. The company has been in business for over 70 years and is part of the Williams-Sonoma, Inc. family of brands. Their vision is to be America's most beautiful and meaningful design source. Pottery Barn is based out of San Francisco, but their online reach spans the entire world.

Ready to ship

The curtains from Pottery Barn are ready-made and able to ship as soon as you make your purchase. They have over 75 styles you can choose from that come in a range of colors and usually about 6 different sizes. If you have really large or unique window sizes, you might need to go the custom route instead of shopping at Pottery Barn. However, if you have standard windows you're dressing, there is a solid list of choices here.

Many out of stock options

We noticed that when we filtered all the curtain results from Pottery Barn to show us in-stock products, it narrowed down our color options and sometimes we weren't able to choose the lining we wanted (like blackout, for example). So it may take a little trial and error to find something you like in the color you want that also fits your window and light filtering preferences. To make it faster, you could filter by type, length, color, material, hanging style, price, sustainability, and mode of shipping.

How-to guides

With each product, Pottery Barn provides ample information for you to know all the details before purchase. You can read all about the construction of the curtains, how to care for them, and browse a guide about how to hang them. They have an extensive curtain guide that outlines how long to let your curtains hang at the bottom depending on the look you're going for and what materials you need to accurately measure your windows.

Return within 30 days

For quick ship upholstery items (like curtains), Pottery Barn lets customers make returns within 30 days of purchase with the original receipt. You can either take your return to the closest UPS location or return it in-store if you happen to live close to a Pottery Barn. If you're returning to a UPS location, you can start the returns process directly from Pottery Barn's website.

Poor customer satisfaction

Pottery Barn has a solid "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau, but they have thousands of poor customer reviews, which is disheartening. From people who have shopped at Pottery Barn over the years, it is not uncommon to see comments that this store is overpriced. We've read experiences from people who have spent thousands of dollars here only to have their items arrive damaged more than once, have constantly changing shipping dates, receive poor quality products, or be charged surprise restocking fees upon returning items. The list goes on and on, so there's no doubt that Pottery Barn needs to get their act together and spend time addressing the reason that so many of their customers run into issues with their orders.

Wouldn't recommend

Pottery Barn sells classy, beautiful curtains and other products. It makes sense why they feel justified in charging an arm and a leg for some of their things. However, if they don't live up to their hype in quality or arrive damaged, what's the point in shopping here? We wish a company as big as this would let customers leave reviews on individual products, but Pottery Barn doesn't. We are deterred by their lack of customer satisfaction, so we've given Pottery Barn one of our lowest ratings for online curtain stores.

Continued from above...

In fact, in recent years the trend of buying curtains online has experienced a significant surge in popularity. There are a variety of reasons for this consumer shift, all of which benefit you, the shopper.

First, online curtain stores offer an extensive array of options. You can browse through a diverse range of curtain styles, colors, patterns, and sizes from the comfort of your own home. This eliminates the need to visit multiple brick-and-mortar stores in search of the perfect curtains, saving you both time and effort.

And compared with shopping in a store, it's so much more convenient to shop online. With just a few clicks or taps, you can compare prices, read reviews, and make purchases at any time of the day or night, without being constrained by store hours or location. This is especially appealing to those of us with busy schedules or who may not be able to visit a store close by.

Another feature that you find with online curtain stores is the availability of customization options. Many of these stores offer tailored solutions, which let you customize your curtains according to specific measurements, fabric preferences, and design specifications. This personalized approach can be much easier online, and helps ensure the curtains you get match exactly with the windows they're for.

When it comes to curating your home to express your unique style, there are a million ways you could add touches of personality. Whether it be through accent walls, lighting, beautiful furniture, or a statement rug, you could go all out with design. And when it comes to curtains, there are endless amounts of patterns available, so you can enjoy browsing the hundreds of options to pick the perfect curtains for each room in your house.

If you're using curtains in your bedroom or a baby's room, you'll probably want ones that have the ability for blackout. This greatly increases the quality and length of sleep, so what's not to love about that? You could get ones that go all the way to the floor or find curtains that just reach the bottom of the windows for a more minimal look.

Another great feature about most curtains is that they're incredibly easy to clean. Whenever you need to, you can simply throw them in the wash. This is a game changer if you're used to cleaning slatted blinds. If you've ever done this tedious chore, then you'll understand why curtains are the more convenient option for easy-clean window treatments.

When deciding where to purchase curtains online, take the following things into consideration:

  • Selection. Since choosing the right pattern and material of curtains can make a big difference in a room, you don't want to feel limited in the selection you have. Find a retailer with hundreds of options and a user-friendly website that allows you to filter through curtains with ease.
  • Price. You may find it surprising how much the cost of curtains can vary based on size and material. If you're purchasing curtains for multiple windows in your home, you'll want to get the best prices possible so you don't feel overwhelmed by the total cost. We recommend comparing the cost of basic curtains between retailers to find the best deal.
  • Return policy. There's always the chance that your measurements are slightly off or the color of the curtains you choose don't look as appealing in your space as you'd imagined. In the event that you want to send your curtains back, make sure you buy from somewhere that will give you a full refund within a comfortable return window.

Curtain Store FAQ

A curtain is a piece of cloth used to block or obscure light from windows. It is a movable screen that also helps maintain privacy in a home. Not only are curtains used to manage the amount of light and transparency in a home, but they are also used as a decorative accent.
Some people prefer the look of curtains over blinds because they add color and texture to a room. They have a fancier look than blinds do. In addition, curtains are easier to open and close than blinds and much easier to keep clean. However, it's not uncommon to see windows with both blinds and curtains.
Curtains can be made of a variety of materials. When buying curtains, the material you choose will be based on both look and the amount of light you want them to block. Most commonly, curtains are made of linen, cotton, wool, nylon, and polyester. They come in all colors and levels of thickness.
When buying curtains online, first consider what room you're using them in and how much light you need them to block. Maybe a living room just needs a thin enough curtain to dim the lights and frost the windows, while a baby's room needs thick curtains to block out light completely. Next, choose the color you want based on other furniture and decor in the room. You'll need to measure the height and width of your windows to ensure you get the right length and have plenty of coverage.
Compared to blinds, curtains are one of the most affordable options for window treatments. Synthetic fabrics like nylon and polyester are the least expensive type of curtain. The cost will also depend on how large your windows are and how long you need the curtains to be. You could easily find curtains at about $20 per panel for an average sized window.
In addition to buying curtains, you'll need a curtain rod to hang them on. This is a long metal or plastic rod that is secured above the window to hold up the curtains. They are usually extendable, so you can make them slightly shorter or longer if needed. The size you buy will be based on the length of your window. Other than a curtain rod, you'll need a measuring tape, level, and some screws to get your curtains hung.
You can usually always return your curtains within 30-60 days depending on the company's return policy. However, if your curtains are custom-sized to fit your windows, it's possible that they will come with a restocking fee. You may not be able to get a full refund for your curtains, so make sure you measure right and are confident in your color choice!
When you order your curtains online, they'll come with instructions on how to wash them. It will depend on the material they are made of. Luckily, curtains are usually away from high-traffic areas, so they are more likely to get dusty than dirty. You could shake them out or spot wash them if necessary, but curtains are fairly low-maintenance.
