Danskin has been part of the dance world for over a century. Originally catering to dancers in NYC, the brand evolved to include yoga, aerobics, and general fitness clothing, particularly for women and girls.
Unsurprisingly, the only brand you'll find on this site is - you guessed it - Danskin. This means that their inventory for Dancewear is limited to tights, leotards, tops, bottoms, and accessories like bags.
We weren't overly impressed with their product range or availability. Given how dominant the Danskin name is within the dance world, we expected to find every imaginable size, color, and style made by the brand. Instead, we found many items were out of stock as we sorted through the available options with respect to colors and sizes.
On the other hand, prices on the Danskin website are comparable to what you might find when buying at a local store. Keep an eye out for extra discounts: at the time we visited the Danskin website, they were offering a coupon to save 15% if we signed up for their email newsletter. We also spotted a 20% discount code on all New Arrivals products on a banner at the top of the page.
You'll need as many discounts as you can get, because shipping costs are expensive: even on a $16 pair of shorts, we had to pay $7.95 for delivery. With such a big-name retailer, we would have expected them to be much more competitive in their shipping fees.
On the other hand, Danskin's return policy is more generous than some, allowing for 30 days from delivery to request a return. As with most Dancewear retailers, they do require that items be unworn and unused to be eligible for a refund.
On the whole, we were less-than-amazed by what Danskin's online store has to offer in terms of Dancewear. You're probably going to find a wider selection of items and lower shipping costs with a higher ranked retailer in our review.
Do you tap, tango, or tour jete? Whether you or your child's preferred form of expression is more traditional, like ballet or jazz, or tends to be more exotic like Bollywood or belly dance, having the right Dancewear is important.
Most Dancewear falls into two categories: everyday training and performance. Naturally, what dancers wear to the studio for practice and training - basic leotards and tights, plain shoes, and so forth - is quite different from what they use when they are performing in a show or competition.
Finding exactly what you're looking for can be a challenge when shopping locally. Most big-box retailers carry an extremely limited selection of brands and sizes, typically only basic leotards and tights for children and even then, on the smaller end of the size range. Specialty Dancewear stores usually have a better selection of both training and performance apparel and shoes, but outside of major metropolitan areas there may not be a retailer nearby.
For this reason, many dancers and their parents shop online for Dancewear. With just a few clicks of the mouse, you can easily find the brands, sizes, styles and colors you're looking for, without the hassle of driving all over town hoping that stores will have it in stock. And, as an added benefit, the prices are often lower than what you'll see at a brick-and-mortar retailer, because the business doesn't have the added expense of maintaining a physical storefront.
