Diet-to-Go is a meal delivery company that has been around since 1991. It aims to make healthy eating easy and affordable. They provide fresh, delicious, low-calorie, nutritionally balanced meals to help customers lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle, including plans for those managing diabetes or pre-diabetes.
Balance-D plan is low-carb, high-protein
The Diet-to-Go plan you're looking for is called Balance-D. It's designed for those who are pre-diabetic or have type 2 diabetes. The meals are low in carbohydrates, with less than 45g per meal, and high in protein, with more than 15g per meal.
Prices start at $9.71
With plans customizable for 5 or 7 days a week, and options for two or three meals per day, the flexibility is there. Prices range from $9.71 to $13.90 per meal, with lower prices for larger quantities. A 20% discount will apply to your first week, which is nice, but doesn't really compare to the offers plenty of Diet-to-Go's competitors start you off with.
Check out the sample menu before giving them your info
Before you can pick your meals, you'll be asked for your billing info. If you're just window shopping for now, we'd encourage you to go to the sample menu (which is intentionally easy to miss) first. One customer made the mistake of giving them her billing info just to see what the meals were like, and she was charged multiple times for orders she hadn't authorized.
Breakfast options but not much else to excite
Diet-to-Go's menu variety, on the other hand, stands out for its inclusivity of breakfast options - a rarity in diabetes-friendly meal plans. The sample menu, featuring dishes like cinnamon walnut cereal, blackened salmon with Brussels sprouts, and eggplant parmesan, seems like a pretty decent range of choices. However, your excitement may wane at the sight of somewhat mundane flavor profiles - we're not seeing any exotic cuisines here, just standard American fare. There's a good mix of protein types, though - beef, pork, poultry, and fish abound.
Interface could use an update
Navigating the menu can be a bit of a chore, thanks to a clunky 2010s website interface where clicking on a menu item might bring up the wrong picture. You also have to click through the recipe listings a little bit to get to the tab with each meal's nutritional info.
Reheat and enjoy
Diet-to-Go's diabetes-friendly meals are fully cooked and only require reheating. The convenience factor resembles enjoying restaurant leftovers, but healthier and tailored to your dietary needs. No need to heat side dishes, and a heads-up to defrost meals thoroughly for an optimal dining experience. However, they don't say whether to use a microwave or oven, or how long meals usually take to heat.
Not many reviews out there
It's a little odd how few reviews there are out there for this company despite having been around for three decades. One angry customer on Trustpilot unfavorably compares the meals to grocery store frozen meals, saying they were soggy and repetitive. However, others have said the service has met their weight loss and diabetes-management needs. Our overall impression is that Diet-to-Go doesn't score the highest in terms of taste.
Ingredient quality is good... probably
Diet-to-Go observes the rigorous food safety standards that are expected in the industry. They use organic ingredients "wherever possible”, and there's one mention somewhere on the website of sourcing being "fresh and local”, but they don't back it up with receipts.
$19.98 a week for shipping alone
Diet-to-Go's shipping costs are egregious. An FAQ article claims "the lowest delivery fees in the industry”, but $19.98 a week is a full $10 higher than most services. (Again, we think their website is due for an update.) Delivery is once a week on an unspecified day of their choosing, so if you prefer to pick your day, you'll need to go with another service. Meals should go into the refrigerator right away, and they can stay there for a week.
You can pause your account, but they don't tell you how to cancel
Diet-to-Go offers an easy ordering process with auto-delivery and no contract or obligation. Customers can cancel their orders at any time without penalty and can also place their plan on hold with a future restart date. We're not sure what you're supposed to do if you want to cancel altogether, though, and revoke their access to your credit card information.
Satisfaction guarantee offered
Diet-to-Go offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If customers are unhappy with their order or the service for any reason, Diet-to-Go will make it right or refund their money.
Don't start your search here
For a service that's been around for over thirty years, the lack of customer reviews is surprising and a bit worrying. The meals seem varied and appealing at first glance, but without real customer feedback, it's hard to know for sure. Also, the cost per meal seems high, especially when you add in a $20 shipping fee that's double what other companies charge. Overall, we're not thrilled about this option. We suggest looking into one of our top-rated services for diabetes-friendly meals instead.
