"Pet Lifestyle and You": that's what PetPlay stands for in all of its products. Created by two dog lovers who were disappointed in the typical mass-produced Dog Beds, PetPlay seeks to provide high-quality Dog Beds and other products that appeal to pets for comfort and to their owners for being planet-friendly and visually appealing.
Using the PetPlay site to find the Dog Bed you need can seem a little tricky at first, as there is no "Show All" option. Instead, you'll either need to shop by your dog's size or by the type of bed you're looking for:
Although the Chill Pads and Mats start at under $75, the majority of the Dog Beds sold at PetPlay tend to fall in the $140+ range. Across all bed styles, you'll find an impressive array of designs, from artistic and classy to whimsical: mustaches and skulls with roses are just two of the patterns that made us smile. Many of the beds also feature customer reviews, helping you sort through the options and find the exact sleeping space your furry friend needs.
In keeping with their commitment to protecting Mother Earth, PetPlay is the only retailer who offers a Build-a-Bed option. You can buy an interchangeable cover - in all of the same fun and beautiful designs as the regular beds - and a rectangular or circular Fill-a-Bed bag. You then fill that bag with any clothing, towels, or bedding you like, especially those that are too worn to still use and that you might have been ready to throw away. Know how your dog likes to curl up on your clean laundry? Now she can have her own bed made from laundry, but with a stylish outside that keeps your ready-to-toss blankets and towels out of the landfill. Win-win!
Looking to save money? Keep an eye out for pop-ups. When we visited the site, we were offered a discount of 15% on our first purchase if we signed up for the PetPlay monthly email newsletter.
One area where PetPlay will not save you money is on shipping and returns. While many of the retailers in our review offer free shipping on orders over $49, PetPlay seems to only offer it if your order is at least $175. This isn't stated explicitly in their shipping information page, but we were given that detail as we went through the shopping process. Also, while you can return unused items in their original packaging within 30 days of delivery, you are responsible for all return shipping costs as well as a $9 restocking fee.
We also experienced some issues while trying to shop using the site. For example, when we went to check out as a guest rather than creating an account, it emptied our shopping cart and asked if we wanted to continue shopping. For many shoppers, that would be an immediate no-go that would result in looking elsewhere for their Dog Bed purchase.
PetPlay does have an excellent reputation as an accredited, A+ rated company with the Better Business Bureau. You can also find numerous customer testimonials with photos of pets using their PetPlay Dog Beds under the About Us link at the top of the page. We were also touched by PetPlay's commitment to giving back, especially through their Warm Bellies Initiative that donates their high-quality beds to shelters and rescue organizations around the country.
Overall, PetPlay goes to great lengths to provide a comfortable night's sleep to your favorite furbaby while offering you an eye-catching addition to your home's existing decor. We appreciate their dedication to Earth-friendly products and to supporting community organizations as well. But, their price range may be out of reach for some budgets, and the online shopping experience could use some tweaking - we're hopeful to see positive changes in that regard in the future.
Where does your dog sleep? If you said, "in my bed", you're not alone: studies show that up to half of all dog owners allow Fido the privilege of bunking in with them at night. However, letting your four-legged friend share your sleeping space may not be the best idea.
Sleep experts cite numerous examples of how co-sleeping with a pet can decrease the quality of your rest. When you're ready for Rover to have his own sleeping arrangements, you'll need to choose a Dog Bed. Dog Beds come in almost as many varieties - and price points - as you'd find when shopping for a person.
These beds range from simple mats to protect flooring and offer your pet some separation from a cold floor to luxury mattresses that would rival the most high-tech mattress designed for human beings.
One of the first things to consider when shopping for Dog Beds is your pet's needs. Dogs with heavy coats may need cooler arrangements, so a mat may be ideal. As your dog ages, the need for cushioning increases especially if he suffers from arthritis or other painful ailments related to age or sickness.
You'll also need to keep in mind your overall home decor. Are you trying to match a particular color scheme or style, incorporating your Dog Bed seamlessly into the way you've furnished and decorated your home? The sky's the limit on the higher end of the spectrum, provided you've got the budget to match.
Finally, whichever Dog Bed you choose, you'll want to know exactly how to keep it clean. Smaller options will probably fit in a front-loading washing machine, and most Dog Beds of all sizes come with some kind of washable cover that you can easily launder at home - though larger models may need to be washed in a higher-capacity machine at a laundromat.
As you decide which retailer to use for your Dog Bed purchase, there are several factors that may influence your choice. Some of those include the following:
