Which DVD Movie Rental Service is the Best?  When Netflix shut down its DVD-by-mail service back in September 2023, it left something of a vacuum in the industry. But, we can hear you say, does anyone even watch DVDs (or Blu-rays) anymore with so many movies and shows on streaming services (...and *cough* pirating sites *cough*...)?

DVD Inbox is the best DVD and Blu-ray rent-by-mail service on the market. You can subscribe for as little as $9.99/month (and the first month is even discounted below that), there are plans that allow for an unlimited number of titles, with no due dates or late fees. Members are superfans of the customer service here, finding nothing but helpful reps who go the extra mile to replace the occasional scratched disc or ones that get lost along the way. And, with hundreds of thousands of titles, you'll never be lacking for something new to watch. We're big fans of this DVD rental service too and give it a perfect 5 stars.

Scarecrow Video may be the most unique DVD rental-by-mail option on our list: it's the only one designated as a non-profit organization and a cultural museum by WA State. There are almost 150,000 titles in the library and thousands of new ones added each year. You'll have to pay-per-rental and there are shipping fees on every delivery: this isn't a traditional subscription format. But, we're pretty sure you'll fall in love with Scarecrow's extensive library and their mission to be defenders of physical media (just like we did).

Café DVD will knock you out with its online catalog of DVDs and Blu-rays: if it was made on disc and not just direct-to-streaming, chances are good you'll find it here. You can mix-and-match your media types if you've got both types of players, and plans are priced between $9.99-$35.99 per month (with several that allow for an unlimited number of titles each month). Some subscribers have been disappointed that the availability of titles at Café DVD doesn't line up with the catalog, waiting a long time for some movies and TV shows to come. But, we've heard good things about the overall customer service here, so we give Café DVD an above-average rating.

4K Bluray 4U is a trustworthy subscription service if you prefer Blu-ray discs to DVDs. Plans range from $17.99-$57.99 per month, allowing you to have anywhere from 2-8 titles at a time and a total of 4-16 movies monthly. The selection is a bit more limited than its closest competitor's, but 4K Bluray 4U makes up for that by offering fantastic customer service.

GameFly started as a video game rental service back in 2002, and later expanded into DVD movie rentals. They emphasize higher-resolution movie rentals, such as blu-ray and 4k, rather than the older 480p dvd format. While their plans are priced competitively, we found customer service issues that should be easily resolved. If you're looking for high quality movie formats, Gamefly is an acceptable choice, otherwise you may find better value with one of the other higher-rated services.

FACETS is a movie rental service connected to a small theater in Chicago: your membership here includes a lot of in-person benefits, but you're also able to sign up just to get the perks of checking out 3 titles per month (on DVD, Blu-ray, or even VHS). Don't let the outdated look of the website fool you: there are titles here spanning decades, but more recent releases are in the inventory as well. The subscription experience here isn't quite as streamlined as rival services', but it's still a great way to access movies you may not have heard of.

3D Blu-ray Rental can't help you if you only want DVDs, but if Blu-ray is your thing, you've got over 20,000 options here. Subscription pricing ranges from $9.99-$62.99 per month, depending on how many DVDs you'd like at a time (from 1-8) and how many you'd like in total every month (from 2-16). Some titles will have a surcharge, and 3D Blu-ray Rental will charge you a fee if you inadvertently get too many discs at a time or in a month - even if it's their fault. Unfortunately, subscribers say that the customer service here isn't great.

The answer is a big "YES". What vinyl records are to audio purists, physical media for movies is to cinephiles. All you need is a great home theater setup (even a modest one) and you've got audiovisual quality that can't be replicated by most streaming platforms. Plus, if your WiFi goes out, you don't have to cancel movie night if you've got a bunch of DVDs on hand.
And, speaking of Internet connections, we've heard of more than a few families who've decided to go connection-free while they're home, going back to DVDs as a way to stop doom-scrolling or watching endless reels on their FYP for a few hours and spend time together.
But, you don't necessarily want to buy a whole bunch of DVDs, and your local library might not be directing much budget towards acquiring ones you could borrow. Don't worry, though: that's where DVD movie rental services come in, even in the absence of Netflix's well-known red envelopes in your mailbox. There are a number of companies that have stepped into the gap, either with membership plans structured much the same way or even offering a pay-as-you-go rental platform. Whether you want the hottest new releases or you're hoping to discover an indie film you've never heard of, there's a DVD rental service you'll love.
What should you look for in a good DVD movie rental company? Here are some key factors that can help you tell apart the ones that will be blockbusters (so to speak) from the ones that are best left on a bloopers reel:
