Harry & David is one of the nation's best-known companies for gift-giving, so it's natural if you thought of them when deciding where to look for flower delivery. As part of the 1 800 Flowers group of brands, Harry & David gives you a selection of their own arrangements (typically planters or other arranged flowers that are shipped to your recipient), those fulfilled by 1 800 Flowers, and a few selections from partners like Shari's Berries. As you browse the 60-or-so options at Harry & David, you'll be able to clearly see where they're coming from (if you have a preference).
Not divided by occasion
The first thing you'll likely notice as you start looking through the flower delivery options here is that they're not sorted by occasion at all. So, whether you're trying to send a sympathy arrangement for a funeral or a festive holiday centerpiece, you're going to have to decide for yourself which bouquets match the mood. You can filter by brand, price range, flower color, or flower type, though, which could help you narrow it down a bit. And, some of the choices have user reviews, so you can always let what's popular be your guide.
Prepare to spend some time searching
So, after all of our own clicking, here's what we found at Harry & David for our two comparison flower deliveries (a bouquet of a dozen red roses and a basic sympathy arrangement). A dozen "Blooming Love Premium” red roses were $74.99, while a bouquet-only arrangement of two dozen roses was $59.99. Those prices aren't unreasonable, but we didn't spot options for a basic dozen of red roses or a simple long-stemmed bouquet. To find something suitable for a sympathy flower delivery, we sorted the Harry & David options by color (just white); the lowest-cost arrangement that seemed appropriate was the Grand Gardenia at $44.99, fulfilled by 1 800 Flowers.
Not likely possible to do same-day delivery here
One important thing to note when considering Harry & David for flower delivery: as far as we could tell, there are no options for same-day delivery, because everything they offer is shipped (often directly from the grower/farm). You'll see as you browse that some arrangements are designated as "available to ship now”, but that's not going to get there in time for an "I need to apologize right away” bouquet. On the other hand, if you know you want your mom to get some beautiful blooms on Mother's Day, just plan that out in advance and Harry & David can make it happen.
Plenty of extras for upgrading your gift-giving
One aspect of flower delivery at Harry & David that stands out in a good way is the number of options for making the bouquet or arrangement extra-special for the recipient. For example, on the Warm Sunset bouquet, we could choose to send it simply as the arrangement itself ($39.99 at the time of our review), with a wicker vase or blue mason jar ($54.99), or with a vase or jar and sunflower wall decor ($59.99). And, because of Harry & David's affiliation with companies like The Popcorn Factory and Shari's Berries, you'll get many more add-on options than rivals provide - lots of kinds of chocolates and other treats, to make the gift even more thoughtful.
Several ways to get lower delivery fees
After you select the flowers you want delivered and enter the recipient's zip code, you'll be able to choose a desired delivery date. We were impressed that, despite not offering same-day service, Harry & David could get our arrangement to our intended address as early as the following day with no surcharge. That bouquet didn't have options for Sundays, and Saturdays came with a $14.99 fee in addition to the $16.99 standard shipping cost (though that cost may vary, depending on the flowers you select). Additionally, if you're a frequent shopper at any of the 1 800 Flowers' companies, you might consider the Celebrations Passport: it's $19.99 to join and $29.99 per year after the first year, and it gets you free standard shipping on eligible items across the entire family of gift-giving brands. Just pay attention to which flowers are designated as "Passport Eligible”, because not all of them qualify.
Gift message + future reminders
The checkout page is also where you can enter a gift message and specify the occasion for your flower delivery; both of those are optional. And, if you're the forgetful type and you'd appreciate future reminders of this occasion, you've got that capability on that screen too.
Customer reviews are mixed regarding flower deliveries
Harry & David has a pretty positive reputation overall. We found over 16,000 store reviews on Google alone, averaging a respectable 4.2 stars out of 5. While it's not easy to suss out which ratings were specific to flowers, some of the mentions we spotted within a few weeks of our review ranged from "not as many flowers as picture online” to "the flowers are beautiful”. You'll also see comments left within just a few hours of each other that call Harry & David "awesome” and "awful”. The one complaint we saw the most is that gifts often arrive without the card telling the recipient who the sender was, so if you use this service for flower delivery, you may want to double-check and make sure they know it was you.
Nothing exceptional
On the whole, we'd call Harry & David just average among your options for flower delivery. The selection is much smaller, and there aren't any bouquets that can arrive same-day. On the other hand, some of the arrangements have dozens of top score customer ratings, so clearly there are some popular flowers to consider here. You might circle back to Harry & David if you don't find what you're looking for higher on our list, but it's not one of our top picks for flower delivery.
