A good night's sleep is essential to your health and well-being, and a great mattress is one of the best ways to ensure you get your forty winks. And what better way to get the best-quality rest of your life than to grab a foam mattress?
So what is a foam mattress? There are two primary types of foam used in beds: polyurethane foam and memory foam. Both contain the same basic ingredients, but polyurethane usually has a "springier” surface and it's generally less costly. Memory foam, on the other hand, was developed by NASA in the 1960s, but it didn't take off as a bedding material until the 1990s.

One-stop shop for bedding and mattresses
Nectar is one of the top brands if you're looking for a site that gives you every detail about the mattress you want to buy. Pricing from $349 to $3,598
There are two types of foam mattresses to choose from at Nectar: memory foam and hybrid. In the memory foam category, Nectar offers the Nectar Ultra, Luxe Foam, Premier Foam, and Classic Foam. For hybrid styles, you'll find the Nectar Hybrid Ultra, Luxe Hybrid, Premier Hybrid, and Classic Hybrid. Some of the mattresses include ultra cooling (Premier Hybrid, Premier Foam, Luxe Hybrid, and Luxe Foam). During our research, we checked out the basic and top-tier foam mattresses to give you an idea of the pricing. We priced them out for queen-size first:
Lifetime repairs, and 365 nights to decide
Nectar offers free shipping for any of its mattresses with a turnaround time of 10-14 business days for any mattress currently in stock. Plus, with Nectar's lifetime warranty, you can send in your mattress for replacement or repair if there's ever a flaw.
Customers love the quality
Nectar holds an "A+” rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau. On top of that, there is significant praise for Nectar on third-party review sites. Trustpilot shows that Nectar has a 4-star average rating and over 14,000 total reviews. The majority of reviews praise the excellent quality of the mattresses and speak of solid results for back and joint pain. Shoppers also praised the responsiveness of the customer service personnel at Nectar when small problems or questions did pop up.
Top pick for policies and prices
With a refund period that's over triple the industry standard and a lifetime warranty, Nectar stands out as the top pick in our review. It has everything from a one-stop-shop approach to bedding as well as affordable and high-end foam mattresses whether you want foam-only or a hybrid design. With tons of reviews and a solid score from the BBB to back it up, we happily recommend Nectar as the top brand of foam mattresses in our review.
Leesa is a company that cares about your sleep and the environment at the same time. Founded in 2015, Leesa works to provide a "bed-in-the-box” where you get a premium design with easy assembly, and an entire bed all in one go if you need. After selling over 40,000 mattresses, Leesa continues to grow and now gives back to the community by partnering with organizations like the Bowery Mission to donate mattresses to nonprofits. Sold at major retailers like West Elm and Pottery Barn, you can try out a Leesa mattress in person before you ever need to decide.
Inventory Overview:
Many models to choose from
There are plenty of foam mattress models to choose from at Leesa. The Signature collection includes the Original, the Sapira, the Legend, and the Reserve, each offering different layers of luxury and some hybrid foam and spring options as well. The Choice Collection is designed to meet more unique needs, including the Plus for those with larger bodies that need additional support, Natural, for eco-conscious buyers, Kids, for the little ones, and Studio, for the lowest-cost option for a standard bed.
Pricing from $439 to $3,419
To break down prices, we looked at the most basic and highest-tier models (priced in queen-size) at Leesa. Here's what our research showed:
Free shipping and returns within 100 days
Leesa offers free no-contact delivery on all orders. Some orders also come with a bonus of free pillows when you buy a mattress. As for returns, you have 100 days to try out your new mattress before you need to decide. If you want to make a return, Leesa will coordinate the pickup from your house and refund you for the full price. However, you will lose out on any discount value you receive.
Top scores from Trustpilot and Sitejabber
There is some confusion from the Better Business Bureau regarding Leesa, which we clarified with the customer service team. Currently, the BBB shows Leesa as "NR” due to a concern that the company is closed. Thankfully, the customer service team was very helpful and noted that while Leesa was bought out by another company (3Z Brands) in 2023, they are still in business. And, according to Trustpilot, where Leesa has 4.3 stars out of 5, the brand has a solid reputation. On Sitejabber, the news is even better with a 4.6-star average. Leesa has tons of praise for providing customers with "perfect sleep” and reduced back, hip, and neck pain across the board.
Perfect for all sleepers
Leesa is a top-notch choice for your next foam mattress. Whether you have specific size needs, a particular comfort level, or just want something that offers eco-friendly options, you can find everything you need at Leesa. The company is top-rated by customers who are getting amazing sleep even after months of using the mattresses. With impressive free shipping and a 100-day trial, Leesa stands out as a fan favorite for foam mattresses, earning an excellent review from us.
Tuft & Needle got its start in 2012 with a mission to make its customers a priority. Promising "best-in-class” customer service, Tuft & Needle also provides foam mattresses made from responsibly-sourced materials. The brand keeps all mattresses free of harmful chemicals and uses its own "adaptive” foam developed by Tuft & Needle experts. The adaptive foam offers an open-cell structure with pressure relief and a heat-conductive graphite material to move heat away from your body. The adaptive foam (different from memory foam) is designed to bounce back better than the average memory foam with a ceramic gel layer to help it retain its original shape after use.
Inventory Overview:
Helpful comparison tools
Tuft & Needle provides a simple shopping experience. With two styles of mattress (foam and hybrid), there's an inventory of 4 mattresses that are easily located on the top navigation bar. As an added bonus, you can compare all of the mattresses side-by-side to see which features are offered on each model. Tuft & Needle is also a brand that allows you to try its products in-store. Tuft & Needle's online store locator can help you find a nearby retailer that offers Tuft & Needle mattresses, to feel the comfort levels in person before you buy.
Pricing from $645 to $2,595
The mattresses at Tuft & Needle include the T&N Original, T&N Original Hybrid, T&N Mint, and T&N Mint Hybrid. You can also find a full bedding set at Tuft & Needle, as well as furniture items like bed frames, mattress foundations, headboards, and dog beds. You could deck out your entire bedroom in Tuft & Needle if you like, making this a competitive one-stop shop. To price out the mattresses here, we looked at queen-size beds in the base and top models. Here's what we found:
Returns within 100 days
Tuft & Needle offers free shipping on all mattress orders in the contiguous 48 states. The return window is within 100 nights of your date of delivery. If you return from Alaska or Hawaii, you won't be refunded for shipping, but for all other returns, the process is free. There is no mention of a time requirement to use your mattress before returning, so if it isn't the right fit for you, you can easily send back your Tuft & Needle mattress any time within the 100 days.
Overall solid ratings for comfort
Tuft & Needle has an impressive reputation with the Better Business Bureau. Currently, the brand holds an "A+” rating and accreditation with the BBB. Tuft & Needle shows a 4.8-star average rating on the BBB as well. Customers love the mattresses and call the products "game changers”. There is also praise for Tuft & Needle's other products including percale sheets, pillows, and more. There are a few negative reviews on sites like Trustpilot, but they make up only 20% of the total reviews. Still, with a few that claim that top-level mattresses broke down in just 2 years, it does bring down Tuft & Needle's overall rating.
Unique foam and high praise for mattress quality
Tuft & Needle is a solid option for eco-friendly mattresses with unique adaptive foam. If you're looking for something a little different from the memory foam options out there, this might be worth a look. You can try the mattresses in person and return them within 100 days if it doesn't work out. While there were some concerns about longevity from some reviewers, most customers loved their Tuft & Needle experience. For this reason, Tuft & Needle earns a near-perfect rating in our review.
Casper is a brand that focuses its attention on targeting sleeplessness through overheating. Casper foam mattresses are designed to disperse heat for a cool and fully-refreshed sleep all night. Casper has been around for 10 years and is based in New York, but you can purchase a mattress from this brand anywhere in the US (even Hawaii and Alaska). Offering two styles (foam and hybrid), Casper is great for those who are overheated while sleeping or those who suffer from tossing and turning.
Inventory Overview:
Helpful mattress quiz and comparison tools
Casper offers an impressive browsing experience with useful pictures across the top navigation bar to help you see your ideal foam mattress before you even start shopping. The site also offers a quiz to guide you toward the right mattresses. So, if you're a first-time foam mattress shopper, or you don't want to sift through the options one by one, the quiz will ask about your sleep concerns, why you're searching for a new mattress, and how concerned you are about costs. Then, they'll suggest the best mattress for you. Casper also offers a comparison tool, so if you see two mattresses you like, you can look at the pros and cons side-by-side.
Pricing from $740 to $6,250
Casper offers five different foam mattresses: The One, Dream, Snow, Dream Max, and Snow Max. The main differences among the various mattresses is the number of foam layers. Casper also offers some extras including pillows, waterproof mattress protectors, bed frames, headboards, and more, so you can put together an entire bed haven all in one place. For our price comparison, we looked at the most and least costly mattresses by Casper. For each site, we looked at the most popular mattress size: queen. Here's what we found:
100-night free trial and free shipping too
Casper has a free shipping policy on all orders. No matter how big your mattress (or how small), you'll qualify for free no-contact delivery. Orders usually arrive within 3-11 business days and are carried by UPS. Casper also provides a 100-night free trial so you can try out your mattress with zero stress. Casper promises that if you don't love your mattress, they'll come pick it up, pack it for you, and give you a full refund for your purchase.
Mixed reviews on mattress quality
Unsurprisingly, Casper has an impressive "A+” rating and accreditation with the Better Business Bureau. However, while star ratings are high on the Casper website, review sites like Trustpilot show a slightly more nuanced story. Currently, Trustpilot shows a 2.6-star average rating for Casper. Some complaints include receiving foam mattresses with defects, and difficulties getting an actual solution from Casper when a complaint was filed. Customers also mentioned that their mattresses began sagging soon after purchase (within 90 days). There are plenty of reviews with praise for the brand, and a total of 70% of customers gave Casper a full 5 stars, but you may want to pay careful attention to your mattress during the 100-day free trial.
Great choice for customers who want cooling
While we are a little concerned with the reports of poor mattress quality soon after purchase, the pros of shopping at Casper outweigh a few poor reviews. Since the company still has 70% 5-star ratings and an "A+” from the BBB, it still stands out as a place you might want to browse, especially if you're looking for a cooling mattress. Casper's impressive return and shipping policies also make it a low-risk brand to get a foam mattress. We give Casper a very good rating of our own.
Keetsa was started in 2007 to take the "agony out of mattress shopping”. Keetsa began as a family-owned mattress manufacturer that offered mattress-in-a-box products for coil and foam mattresses. Promising to be a new kind of sleep shop, Keetsa opened its first retail mattress location in San Francisco. Now, they have two locations in New York and Berkley, CA. And, you may have already slept in a Keetsa bed, as the company partners with several hotel chains like 1 Hotel around the world.
Inventory Overview:
Simple quiz to find your best match
Keetsa has a simple browsing experience that allows you to quickly scroll through the selection of mattresses. If you're not sure where to start, you can use Keetsa's "Match Wizard” quiz to find out which mattress is best for your sleep style. Keetsa will ask about your favorite sleeping position, how sensitive you are to the movement of others, and whether you run warm when you sleep. At the end, you'll be given your top two matches and links to browse for them right away. Keetsa also offers products like bedspreads, dog beds, headboards, pillows, and bed frames.
Pricing from $790 to $3,490
At Keetsa, you can get most of the foam mattresses without breaking the bank. Across six models (Keetsa Plus, Keetsa Pillow Plus, Keetsa Cloud, Tea Leaf Supreme, Tea Leaf Classic, and Tea Leaf Dream) Keetsa offers three mattress styles: hybrid, totally memory foam, and "iCoil” mattresses with just Keetsa's coils. During our price comparison, we looked at the basic and top models of foam mattresses (excluding the iCoils which did not have foam) in queen size, so you can get an idea of the average prices at Keetsa.
Free shipping in 48 states
Keetsa offers free delivery anywhere in the contiguous US. Most orders will ship through FedEx and get to you within 5-10 business days. For returns, you have 90 days to try your mattress out before you need to decide. If you choose to make a return, you'll need to call Keetsa directly. The brand notes in its return policy that a 10% fee will be deducted from your final return. There is currently no mention of whether Keetsa will pick up the mattress from your home for you. Those two details are a bit of a downside, compared with many Keetsa rivals we evaluated.
Top scores from mattress buyers
Keetsa holds an "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau. However, we couldn't find any third-party review sites that showed feedback for Keetsa. On the other hand, there were plenty of reviews on Keetsa's website. Each mattress has its own rating, and 4 of the 6 mattresses had 4.8 stars out of 5, 2 mattresses had 4.9 stars, and 1 mattress showed a 4.7-star average. In general, customers left high praise for Keetsa, saying they were "obsessed” with their new mattresses or claiming impressive levels of comfort for the price. Some reviewers felt that the mattresses were a little firm for their tastes, but overall the majority of sleepers were satisfied.
Solid pricing and unique hybrid mattresses
Keetsa is a standout brand for your next foam mattress even if we didn't find many reviews on third-party sites. The brand offers impressive customer policies for free shipping (though the 10% return fee wasn't our favorite). In general, the selection offers affordable mattresses with memory foam and coil springs too. While we'd love to see more buzz outside of Keetsa's website, the BBB's "A+” rating lends credence to Keetsa's trustworthiness. For this reason, it earns a solid rating in our review.
Purple is a brand that stands out by having a new design approach that utilizes gel technology and materials to give you more support than just memory foam. Using a gridlike design of gel, Purple promises to reduce 40% of your pain. Purple was founded by two brothers who developed the GelFlex Grid that doesn't trap heat. The GelFlex Grid has been used by hospitals to support intensive care patients for over 20 years. The grid instantly adapts to your movement, so it takes less time than memory foam to re-form to your body when you move.
Inventory Overview:
Start with the mattress quiz
If you're not sure where to start, Purple offers a mattress quiz to help match you with your ideal foam mattress, depending on your sleep style and where you want to find pain relief. On top of that, each listing has impressive detail with colorful bars that show you the level of comfort you can expect from each mattress. You'll be able to see cooling, comfort, support, mattress height, and feel all at a glance.
Pricing from $699 to $12,990
There are three different categories of foam mattresses to browse at Purple. You can check out the Essentials Collection, which offers more affordable foam-only (along with the GelFlex Grid) mattresses. The Hybrid Collection includes a mix of the patented gel, foam, and coils. Finally, there's the Rejuvenate Luxe Collection which includes a quilted euro top and added comfort layers. These are the most luxurious and come in at a much higher price than the other foam mattresses at Purple. There are three mattresses to choose from in the Essentials, Hybrid, and Rejuvenate Luxe collections each. To check out the pricing at Purple, we looked at the base model and top model in queen sizes. Here's what we found:
Free returns within 100 nights
Purple offers free shipping and returns on all of its mattresses. You also get free in-home setup with the hybrid models and RejuvenatePremier styles. Purple offers a 100-night trial period, though you do need to try sleeping on the mattress for a minimum of 21 days to break it in before you decide. The mattress must be clean and undamaged to qualify for a return.
Concerning reviews about quality and service
Regrettably, Purple has a mixed reputation. Let's start with the good news first: Purple holds an "A+” rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau. On the BBB we also see an average rating of 3.6 stars out of 5. However, on other third-party review sites, the feedback isn't very positive. On Trustpilot, Purple has a 1.9-star average. Further, there are very few total reviews online (only 54 total on Trustpilot). In general, customers praise Purple accessories like the pillows but say that the firmness of the mattresses doesn't last. One customer noted that he felt Purple was the most comfortable mattress he tried, but after having many problems with faulty products and dealing with customer service, his overall experience was terrible.
A mid-tier choice with unique mattress layers
While the Purple mattress GelFlex Grid is unique, customers are saying it may not be worth the hassle. While there are some balanced reviews on the BBB, and Purple holds a full "A+” rating and accreditation there, the mixed reviews leave us with some questions. You may still like Purple, as it's generally agreed to be comfy, but make sure you take advantage of the return policy if you don't. For its unique features balanced against the mixed reviews, Purple earns a middle-tier rating overall.
The goal at the Layla brand isn't to make a mattress, but to provide a place to let you get balanced rest and be the best "you” possible during the day. Layla stands out from the pack by offering cooling copper and different firmness levels on both sides of the flippable mattress, so you can switch it up for maximum comfort. Layla has won the Best Mattress awards on Forbes and CNet, showing promise for cooling and comfort despite some poor reviews (which we'll get to later).
Inventory Overview:
Pick out a full-bedroom set
Shopping on the Layla website is simple, and you can jump right into browsing the two mattress types right from the main page. Layla also offers comparisons between its mattresses and other leading brands to see a side-by-side look at how different brands stack up against Layla's inventory. On top of mattresses, Layla offers pillows, bed frames, weighted blankets, bedroom accessories, and dog beds to complete an entire new bedroom if you want.
Pricing from $599 to $1,699
There are only two types of foam mattresses offered at Layla: the Memory Foam Mattress and the Hybrid Mattress. Each of them offers sizing from twin to cali king, but there aren't any sub-models or designs to choose from. Notably, both models were listed as having "low stock”, so if you decide you like a mattress, you'll want to put it in your cart pretty quickly. Here's how the costs shake out for a queen size when you break down the different models:
Free shipping and 100% return guarantee
Shipping on all orders from Layla is free of charge in the 48 contiguous states. You also get a 120-night purchase trial with a 100% guarantee of a refund if you're not happy. Layla does require that you try out the mattress for 4 weeks after delivery before your mattress will qualify for a return. If you choose to opt for a return, Layla will schedule the pick-up so that you don't have to worry about moving the heavy mattress around your home.
Missing the mark on long-term quality
Layla has an "A+” rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau to support its claims that it sells award-winning mattresses. Across review sites, though, it's hard to find third-party reviews, and what we didn't find wasn't ideal. Trustpilot shows a 2.6-star average from reviewers, but this is across only 4 total reviews. So, it may not be a solid indication of Layla's quality. Reviewers noted that while they purchased mattresses from Layla based on positive YouTube reviews, the experience over time wasn't worth the money. Customers noted issues with mattresses sagging after 3 years, cracking in the mattress surface, and increased back pain while sleeping. In general, sleepers feel that the longevity of Layla mattresses isn't what it should be.
Too many concerns about sagging
While an "A+” rating and solid return policy are great benefits, customers are saying they can't use the Layla mattresses long-term. With issues like sagging or torn mattress tops after 3 years, the price doesn't make sense for the quality. So, despite high ratings from the BBB, Layla doesn't stand out for offering top-quality foam mattresses. For this reason, and the general lack of buzz for Layla, the brand earns a lower rating in our review.
Essentia is a brand known for its organic foam mattresses. The company bases its foam mattress on 8 elements for deeper sleep: certified organic materials, posture support, allergy-friendly, oxygen, active cooling, accelerated recovery (for your body), EMF protection, and mold protection. Founded by Jack Dell'Accio, the company was created to provide pain relief and support for those battling diseases like cancer, and now the company offers beds for everyone who needs a good night's sleep.
Inventory Overview:
Enjoy a wide variety of organic merchandise
The Essentia website has a modern design and is pretty simple to shop at. However, the mattresses are broken down into different categories that can take a fair bit of scrolling to find. Essentia could also use some more details on the listings (like information on the individual mattress layers). The brand offers a range of other organic items like pillows, bedroom essentials for babies and children, organic sheets and comforters, boxsprings and mattress toppers, and even dog beds. You can put together almost a whole new home with Essentia's organic selection.
Pricing from $1,699 to $23,047
The pricing at Essentia isn't cheap. Out of the three mattress styles ("Lifestyle” mattresses, one of the two "Performance” mattresses, or the Procor P1 Custom mattress) there are six types of foam mattresses to choose from, and none is under $1,000. To do a price comparison of this brand, we looked at the basic and top models of mattresses in the queen size. Here's what we discovered:
Free shipping and 120 days to try it out
The shipping is free for any order at Essentia. If you buy the higher-end models, you can also score free in-home setup too. If you buy one of the more basic foam mattresses at Essentia, in-home delivery (with old mattress removal) costs $249. Essentia also offers a 120-night sleep trial for the mattress. If you don't like your mattress, you can contact customer service and Essentia will have your mattress picked up and returned, but there is a return fee of 9% of the listed price. As an added consideration, you will need to keep the mattress for at least 30 days (even if you hate it on day one) before you're allowed to apply for a return.
Only one review and it's not great news
Essentia is a pretty new company, and it doesn't currently have a rating with the Better Business Bureau. Regrettably, there isn't much buzz elsewhere either. Currently, Essentia shows only one review on trusted review sites like Sitejabber or Trustpilot. This single review is just 2 stars and is a complaint where the customer was shipped the wrong size mattress. The customer also felt that the Essentia memory foam was too hard and uncomfortable to sleep on. When the customer reached out to Essentia, the company noted that "all sales were final” despite the listed return policy. While this is only one experience, we don't know much else about Essentia, since there isn't other feedback to judge by.
Essentia has room to grow
Considering the feedback from the one reviewer and the fact that Essentia is extremely costly (with no solid reputation to back it up), we're a little concerned about recommending this brand for your next foam mattress. If you're definitely going for eco-friendly, this may be worth a look, but otherwise, you may want to wait until Essentia builds up a more trustworthy reputation. We hope to see improvement in the future.
Puffy is a brand that offers a competitive array of foam mattresses alongside luxury bedding gifts with most purchases. This means you can get pillows, mattress protectors, sheets, and sleep masks as free gifts when you buy a mattress from Puffy. The brand has impressive designs with a luxury feel without breaking the bank. Plus, if you're looking for something even more exciting, Puffy offers a range of Smart Beds (a bundle deal with one of the Puffy mattresses and an adjustable base).
Inventory Overview:
Impressive level of detail on listings
Puffy offers an impressive level of detail while you're shopping. Each foam mattress can be compared with leading brands to see where Puffy stands out from the pack. You can also see quick-glance details about each mattress like the number of foam layers, the height, the firmness, and special details like the amount of back support, cooling, and pressure relief. On top of offering you free gifts on every order (yep, even the twin-size base model), Puffy sells bed frames and bedding as well.
Pricing from $599 to $3,998
The prices at Puffy aren't too high compared to other "luxury” brands. You can find plenty of mattress sizes around the $1,000 mark. There are four mattress styles available: the Puffy CLOUD, the Puffy LUX, the Puffy ROYAL, and the Puffy MONARCH. Each offers a different number of foam layers, levels of softness, and heights, but all come with free gifts of bedding, pillows, and mattress protectors. Here's how the prices at Puffy look when you buy a queen in the base and top models:
Free 1-2-day shipping and 101-night trial
Puffy offers free 1-2-day shipping on all of its mattresses. This is one of the fastest shipping turnarounds in the industry. On top of this, Puffy offers a 101-night sleep trial. You need to try your mattress for a minimum of 14 nights before Puffy will process a refund, and you will need to return any free accessories you got during your order as well.
Increased pain for some sleepers
While Puffy claims to have tens of thousands of 5-star reviews online, we couldn't find most of those. Puffy earns an "A-” rating from the Better Business Bureau, but its average rating on Trustpilot is only 2.8 stars. There are also just over 140 total reviews out there between the BBB and Trustpilot, which raises some questions about where Puffy is seeing thousands of reviews (unless they only count reviews posted to its website). Customers note that the mattresses at Puffy start out great, but begin deflating after around 4-5 years. Other sleepers complained about the smell when their mattresses were unpackaged, and many reviews from non-back sleepers mentioned added pain in hips and lower back.
Best only if you sleep on your back
Since your new foam mattress is supposed to reduce pain, not increase it, it may be safer to choose another site before you go with Puffy. While the prices are competitive and the brand ships your mattress quickly, if you don't sleep on your back, you may not like the results of your Puffy mattress. However, if you are a back sleeper, and you like the prices and free gifts, you may still like Puffy's mattress designs. Still, for most customers, you can find better foam mattresses at our higher-rated sites instead.
Live and Sleep is one of the newer companies on our list, and it promises a range of foam mattresses that are less costly than competitors. The mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified and use fewer chemicals (though the site doesn't clarify fewer than what). Live and Sleep offers eco-friendly materials like visco-elastic foam that also offers cooling during the night. The mattresses are organized into three categories - Classic, Elite, and Luxury - but all three offer only foam (no hybrid) mattresses.
Inventory Overview:
A narrow focus on mattresses
You can see the three types of mattresses offered by Live and Sleep from the main page or by using the top navigation bar. Live and Sleep also offers pillows, but some other popular bedding items are notably missing. Live and Sleep doesn't offer sheets, bed frames, or comforters as we've seen from other brands. The main focus is the foam mattresses, and that's it. When you start shopping for mattresses, they're all on one page, and you can change selections from the main categories to see the range of sizes. While the brand lists cali king as an option, the cali king size was out of stock for all three mattress types.
Pricing from $399 to $999
Among the three main categories, you'll find plenty of foam layers and comfort. The Classic mattress is designed with a plush layer on top and a deep support layer. It has a medium-firm feel. The Elite mattress offers cooling and total body support with a firm feel. Finally, the Luxury mattress offers cooling and a plush top with memory foam and the same core support as the Classic. This is a medium-balanced feel. To give you an idea of the costs, we priced out the basic model and the top-tier model of foam mattress at Live and Sleep. Our prices include queen-size mattresses as the baseline. Here's what we found:
Free shipping and returns between 30-100 nights
Live and Sleep offers free and fast shipping on every mattress, so you don't have to worry about extra costs to get it to your home. The return policy is a little more complicated than at other brands, though. Depending on what model you buy, the length of the sleep trial will change. For the Classic models, the return period is anytime between your 15th and 30th night using the mattress. If you choose the Elite or Luxury models, you can return after your 50th night and up to your 100th night with the mattress. In other words, you have to use each mattress for a required "break in” period before you are eligible to make the return.
No buzz for Live and Sleep
Currently, there are no third-party reviews for Live and Sleep. The company does not have a page with the Better Business Bureau and there are no ratings on trusted review sites like Sitejabber or Trustpilot. The only place we even found reviews was a site that appeared to be a blog review posted in 2023. While this review rated Live and Sleep around 4 stars, that doesn't reflect individual customer opinions.
Other brands are doing it better
While the prices are decent at Live and Sleep, there are a few red flags that make us more wary. First, there are no reviews for Live and Sleep that offer third-party verification or customer feedback. On top of that, the company doesn't have enough detail on the foam mattresses and uses a lot of buzzwords like "eco-friendly” without describing more about how that is achieved beyond visco-elastic. Overall, there are brands with better reputations that provide clearer product descriptions so you know what you're buying. Since Live and Sleep doesn't hit the mark on any of these factors, it earns a lower rating from us.
Tempurpedic is probably the company most sleepers think of when they consider buying a foam mattress. Tempurpedic has been around for over 30 years and got its start in Sweden, and it's considered the standard for memory foam mattresses and one of the brands to make memory foam popular. Over the years, Tempurpedic has earned awards from J.D. Power for customer satisfaction and quality of online purchases; however, this may not be reflected in actual customer experience.
Inventory Overview:
Helpful purchase details
There are two styles of mattresses at Tempurpedic (hybrid and regular foam), but you can easily find both in every listing. For example, if you shop the TEMPUR-Cloud model, Tempurpedic shows the hybrid and non-hybrid styles right on the same page. Each listing also shows a preview of the layers of foam and springs depending on which model you choose. Tempurpedic offers detailed instructions on how to set up your new mattress, and a list of extras that are compatible with the mattress you chose - like which foundation or platform bed matches your chosen foam mattress. On top of bed frames and mattresses, you can find toppers, bedding, pillows, and other seating accessories with soft Tempurpedic technology.
Pricing from $1,699 to $18,596
There are four mattress models available and each has options for memory foam and hybrid. You can choose between the TEMPUR-Cloud, the TEMPUR-Adapt, TEMPUR-Breeze, and TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze. However, prices aren't the most affordable. Tempurpedic is a top-of-the-line brand with prices to match. To see what you might expect, we compared the top and base models of the Tempurpedic line for a queen-size mattress. Here's what we found:
90-day trial and free returns
All mattresses ship free as long as you live in the contiguous 48 states. Certain models of Tempurpedic offer white-glove in-home delivery, though most of the foam mattresses will be delivered just to your door. Tempurpedic offers 90 days to try out its mattresses. You will need to try out the mattress for a minimum of 30 nights before you can request a return. The only mattresses that can't be returned are those offered in closeout sales.
Concerns about warranties and product quality
Tempurpedic holds an "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau, but that's where the good news stops. Currently, none of the review rating averages are above 1.8 stars. On the BBB, Tempurpedic shows a 1-star average rating. Similarly, on Trustpilot, reviewers give Tempurpedic an average of 1.2 stars in total. Sitejabber is the highest with 1.8 stars, but the feedback isn't great no matter where you look. Customers complained that their Tempurpedic made their back and joint pain worse after using it for a few years. There are also several complaints that note that trying to make a claim through the 10-year warranty plan doesn't work, leaving customers with faulty mattresses. The complaints cover everything from specific mattresses to other items sold by Tempurpedic, but the general consensus is that sleepers aren't happy with their Tempurpedic purchase.
Too costly to be worth the trouble
While Tempurpedic may be considered the industry standard for some, recent reviews show that customers are not actually happy with their Tempurpedic purchases. Considering the cost of the foam mattresses at Tempurpedic, and the low-scoring reviews across the board, you may want to choose a less costly and more trustworthy brand that honors its warranties.
Made with eco-friendly, natural materials and a focus on hypoallergenic production, SweetNight promises to offer foam mattresses that are good for the planet and for you at the same time. SweetNight claims to have served over 1 million customers across 130 countries, though we're not sure how true this is based on SweetNight's customer reviews. With a range of styles including hybrids, foam-only, and gel mattresses, SweetNight has a style to fit every shape, size, and sleeper - if those items are in stock.
Inventory Overview:
A lot of mattresses out of stock
Browsing on SweetNight is a little more difficult than shopping with competing brands. You can see all of the mattresses on one screen, but there is only an add-to-cart button (rather than a "see more” button) and many of the key details about the mattresses are missing. To find the individual listing pages, you have to use the top navigation bar and click on the mattress by name. Many of the foam and hybrid mattresses were also out of stock at the time of our review, making it difficult to find sizes or styles across the entire website.
Pricing from $231 to $1,299
The prices at SweetNight are affordable, with plenty of regular sales and promotions. For many sizes and models, you can score multiple styles of the SweetNight mattresses for under $500 (if they are in stock). SweetNight offers foam mattresses and hybrids among eight different models. Each mattress also comes with different thickness options from 10”-14” depending on the size. To price out the mattresses at SweetNight, we looked at the base option and the best mattress offered by SweetNight in queen size. Here's what we found:
100-day test period
SweetNight offers free returns within 100 days of your delivery date. There is no requirement to keep the mattress for any period before you make your decision. Every mattress ships 100% free of charge too. Notably, there is no mention of how returns or pickup will be completed in the return policy, which is unusual for most foam mattress brands.
Concerns about scams
SweetNight has a shocking back-and-forth between review sites. On Trustpilot, the mattress brand has a 4.4-star average (though this only includes 95 total reviews). However, on the Better Business Bureau, SweetNight has a concerning "F” rating and just 1 star out of 5. Reviewers say that SweetNight is a "scam” and asks for personal information that is inappropriate - like a driver's license and a utility bill to prove the customers are "real”. Other customers purchased mattresses and never received them, leaving them with nothing to show for what they spent.
Not worth your time
You might have been thinking the prices at SweetNight were too good to be true. According to some of the reviews we found during our research, that might be the case. With concerns about scams and not receiving your items after purchase, it's safer to browse a different brand for your next foam mattress. With additional issues like harder-than-average browsing and out-of-stock items, SweetNight leaves a lot of room for improvement.
There are tons of benefits to choosing a foam mattress over a traditional style. Foam can help relieve pressure points and provide more support across your body. Basically, if you want to feel like you sink into your mattress (like a soft cocoon for a good night's sleep), you'll want to check out memory foam ASAP.
Experts say foam mattresses are good for pressure points, but what does that mean for your overall health? Memory foam helps with back pain, relief from joint pain, and deeper sleep, according to some studies. Plus, foam mattresses offer motion isolation, which helps prevent any bouncing or wiggling if you sleep with a partner. You'll also get benefits like temperature regulation, and some relief for those who suffer from sleep apnea.
In days past, shopping for a mattress was a whole event. You'd have to find a local mattress shop and try out all the beds before you pick from the available options. Now, you can shop for your next mattress totally online. This opens up hundreds of styles from different sizes, shapes, thicknesses, and more. Plus, most retailers will ship your new mattress directly to your home. Foam mattresses will typically ship in a vacuum-sealed container and may take a few hours to fully expand once you receive them. It feels very sci-fi.
