More than a million people have entrusted Casper mattresses to give them "award-winning sleep”, which according to the company is "the superpower that charges everything that people do”. We agree that a good night's sleep does make people friendlier, faster and smarter.
5 mattresses in 6 different sizes
At the time of this review, there were five Casper mattresses to choose from, all available in six sizes ranging from Twin to Cal King:
100-night sleep trial, standard 10-year warranty
Nothing about Casper's customer policies should catch you off-guard, because they're pretty standard. You've got 100 nights to try your foam mattress and decide if it works well for you, and you won't have any fees deducted from your refund if you choose to return it. Mattresses ship for free in the continental United States, and they're covered by a 10-year warranty.
Generous donations to people (and pets) in need
We really like how Casper gives back to the community - or, as they put it, "at the end of the day [they] give a sheet”. They've made donations of sleep products to people and animals through the International Rescue Committee, Sense of Home, and other nonprofits. This includes mattresses that get returned within the 100-night trial period: their couriers will come and pack up your mattress at a time that's convenient to you and either donate or recycle it. And, in select brick-and-mortar locations, Casper accepts drop-offs of old pillows, sheets and bedding to be recycled. We can get behind that.
Strong reputation
Besides their do-gooder reputation, Casper is a brand you can trust. They've earned an "A+” and accreditation from the BBB, and you've already seen that there are tens of thousands of reviews on the mattresses sold through their site. We always like to double-check customer feedback beyond what the store posts, and that's pretty solid for Casper too. 85% of shoppers give Casper a 4- or 5-star rating; any complaints we found were related to shipping issues or expressed a dislike of foam mattresses as a whole, while few had anything bad to say about the brand or its support reps in particular.
A brand we can recommend
Casper is a solid win among foam mattress brands. You've got several options here, depending on how much support and/or cooling you need and on your budget, there should be no problems with getting a refund during your 100-night trial if you need it, and you get the added bonus of helping Casper help others. Sounds good to us. Long story short, we like Casper and we think you will too.
You may have found your curiosity piqued by a mattress-in-a-box unboxing video, watching a seemingly too-small carton produce a king-size mattress in just a matter of seconds. Yes, you really can get an amazing night's sleep from one of these mattresses that gets shipped to your doorstep - no need to drive around town and strap your new bed to the roof of your car after all!
In fact, many customers have a strong preference for foam mattresses over the traditional spring or coil versions paired with a box spring. Technology has come a long way over the last decade or so, and if you're tired of waking up with an aching back, sore shoulder, or irritable partner (because your tossing-and-turning shook the bed all night), you'll definitely want to consider what a foam mattress can do for you.
What do you need to know about this type of mattress? First, there's a distinction between all-foam and hybrid construction. All-foam is just like it sounds: every layer consists of some kind of foam that either contours to your body or supports the mattress as a whole. These layers can vary quite widely from one brand to another, and even within the same manufacturer - offering different mattress heights, levels of support, and firmness at the edge of the bed itself. Hybrid mattresses are a combination of foam and coils or springs. These are usually designed to give you more support and cooling, and give you a sleep experience that more closely approximates what you're used to while offering the softer, more supportive feel of foam.
One innovation we've seen recently is flippable foam mattresses. If you're not sure whether you prefer yours to be on the firm or soft side, no worries: several brands give you a two-in-one experience. But, even if you don't purchase a two-sided foam mattress, you're not stuck with whatever you buy.
Why? Every brand in our review gives you at least 30 nights to try it out and see how it feels - because it can take at least that long for your body to adjust to a new mattress. Most foam mattresses give you even longer than that, from 100 days to a full year, and you can return it if you wind up thinking something else would be a better fit. Just watch for the details on that trial period: some companies charge a return fee, while others give you a full refund.
It's incredible how many foam mattress companies have hit the market over the last few years. Which one should you pick? You might feel overwhelmed even trying to start shopping around. We've evaluated some of today's most popular brands, and while you browse, here are some factors to keep in mind:
