Essentia has worked hard to perfect "the world's only natural memory foam”. If you want a mattress that's organic and non-toxic, this is the brand for you. They even offer this fun fact: if you were to leave your Essentia mattress completely exposed to the elements of sun, wind, and rain, it would fully biodegrade within three years.
100% organic mattresses are a thing
You might be wondering how, exactly, a foam mattress can be "organic”. They're made from hevea milk (the sap of the rubber tree), organic latex, Dunlop latex (also made from rubber tree sap), plant extracts like hydrolyzed corn, organic cotton, and even essential oils like grapefruit seed and jasmine essence.
Premium materials = premium price
It should be no surprise that you'll pay a lot more for an organic foam mattress, compared with pricing from Essentia's non-organic rivals. The lowest-priced mattress here is $2,448, and the most expensive is a jaw-dropping $14,500. At least the shipping is free, right?
Choose your category, then your desired firmness
Once you've gotten past the sticker shock, how do you go about choosing the right Essentia mattress for you? Start by deciding which category you prefer, and then choose the feel you like best:
- Lifestyle: this is Essentia's entry-level design and consists of the Tatami and Stratami models, both available in all-foam and hybrid construction. Tatami offers a luxury firm feel, while Stratami has a more medium feel. That's because the Tatami uses one inch of patented natural memory foam and seven inches of support foam, while the Stratami is made of a three-inch dome shaped comfort layer and just five inches of support foam. The Tatami's starting price is $2,448 and the Stratami's is $2,915, both for a twin, all-foam construction.
- Performance: these Essentia mattresses give you additional posture support, as well as a sleep that's 3 degrees cooler. Your options in this category include the Classic 8, Energie Opus, and Eluxe. Their construction is essentially the same, with the main difference being the feel: the Classic 8 is luxury firm, the Energie Opus is medium, and the Eluxe is deep. Starting prices range from $3,382 to $5,142 for a twin, and you can choose between 8” and 10” mattress heights on all three models.
- Wholebody Recovery: according to Essentia, these mattresses "score best for accelerated self-healing by setting unmatched conditions to maintain deeper sleep cycles”. Once again, the differences among the three models in this category - Beausommet, Dormeuse, Dormeuse Fior - come from the mattress feel (luxury firm, medium, deep). You'll get a 7 degree cooling effect with any of these three mattresses, and you can opt to include EMF barrier protection (which encourages "a healthy flow of blood cells even when being exposed to high levels of micro radiation from cellular phones and wifi signals”). Prices start at $5,252, $5,362, and $6,077, respectively.
- ProCor Custom Built: this is the only Essentia mattress with a zero-returns policy, because it's custom-built specifically for you. These mattresses were designed with athletes in mind, and it uses the Essentia ID evaluation to uncover your unique profile: strengths and weaknesses, the sport you play, your musculoskeletal type and more. This mattress only comes in Twin XL, Queen, King and Cal King sizes, and the price tag is anywhere from $8,790 to $14,750.
Longer sleep trial and warranty period
With the exception of the custom-made beds, all Essentia foam mattresses come with a 120-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty. Their testing indicates that your mattress should experience a height decrease of less than a half-inch within 10 years, and your warranty goes well beyond that for extra peace of mind about your investment. But, unlike many foam mattress brands, Essentia charges a return fee of around 9% of the retail price. We're a little disappointed that trying a mattress here isn't exactly risk-free.
Save with a sale or discount for certain professions
When we visited the Essentia online store most recently, there was a mattress sale in progress. Shoppers could save 20% on the Lifestyle category, 22% on Performance, and 25% on Wholebody. When we clicked on the link at the top of the page to get more info on the sale, we also found that Essentia offers an everyday discount of $100 to teachers, military, first responders and medical professionals who verify their status. Just note that this discount can't be stacked with any other promo code, and a sitewide sale might offer you more savings.
No BBB complaints
Essentia was listed as "Not Rated” by the Better Business Bureau. That's a bit of a surprise, given that the company has been around for over a decade - but that also reflects the fact that there have been no complaints filed against Essentia with the BBB. And that's always a good thing.
Customer feedback varies
Customer comments elsewhere are a mixed lot. Some people have nothing but praise for Essentia, from the mattresses themselves to their experience with customer support. The opposite is also true, with complaints about the comfort of the mattress (and the cost of the return fees) and with the way Essentia reps handled issues that were raised.
Great option for some, too expensive for most
If you or someone in your household struggles with allergies and sensitivities, Essentia's organic, non-toxic products might be your only option in the foam mattress marketplace. We can appreciate the care and research that have gone into making these mattresses, and it's impressive that there's an option for fully-customized mattresses geared towards world-class athletes (or even just those of us who aspire to be). But, Essentia's price point combined with a return fee of nearly 10% keep the brand from reaching greater heights in our rankings.
