Futons are a common piece of furniture to sleep on or relax. The convenience of having it be a chair or couch by day and a bed by night makes it a convenient addition to any house. Futons are great for an extra bed for company that can be left as a couch or chair during the day or when no one is using it. They are also fantastic for bedrooms that have limited space, since you can use it as a bed at night but save space during the day by making it back into a couch.
The mattress cover can be made out of several types of materials, such as microfiber, cotton, linen, velvet - the possibilities are almost endless. Futon mattresses are very similar to traditional mattresses but as an added bonus you can turn the mattress into a couch. Instead of purchasing a bed and a couch, a futon provides both of these pieces of furniture in one for an affordable price. Futon covers are interchangeable so you can update the look of your futon as often as you like.

Wayfair was founded in 2011 by Niraj Shah and Steve Connie. It was originally called CSN Stores, and later became Wayfair. When first starting out, the business was run out of Steve's spare bedroom in Boston, Massachusetts. Today they have a headquarters building still located there - but definitely much larger than a bedroom.
Huge selection available
The selection offered for futons from Wayfair is extensive with over 4,000 options to choose from. They have a variety of price points, sure to appease every budget. They have items from chairs to couches, metal frames to upscale wood frames. They even have futons with additional storage included. The website is easy to navigate, and you are able to search by a variety of choices. These include color, fabric, size, type of finish, special offers and the list goes on. They also offer the option to add on expert assembly for an extra fee.
When shipping from Wayfair, if your package is under 150 pounds it will ship through UPS. Anything larger than 150 pounds will ship through a third party carrier. These are noted on the website before you purchase. Shipping times will be selected at checkout based on which level you decide to pay for. Typically for orders over $35 they offer free shipping, but that is not a guarantee. It will be listed on the product page if the futon will ship for free or have an additional cost. For larger items, there will be up to 3 additional days to ship the product.
100-night free trial
Wayfair offers a good return policy. As long as you have the original packaging and the item is unassembled, you have 30 days to return. For items that arrive damaged, you will need to alert Wayfair within 30 days of arrival. Every mattress comes with a 100-night free trial. So, you will be able to try out the futon mattress for 100 days before deciding if you want to keep it. If you decide to return or exchange it, the 100 days do not restart. When requesting a refund, also be aware that delivery fees will not be refunded.
Positive customer reviews
Wayfair has earned an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau website. Customers have a lot of positive things to say about Wayfair. One person raved about the affordability and selection. She was able to redo an entire room and stay within budget. Another customer raved about how the customer service agent went above and beyond to help her with an issue. There were some negative reviews about returns, but the positive far outweighed the negatives here. The negative reviews included things like personality of customer service agents on the phone, ease of handling a return and speed of the entire process.
Overall, Wayfair is a great company with a massive selection. They have a phenomenal free trial for the futon mattress and an excellent 30-day return policy on everything else. They are well thought of by consumers and have raving reviews. Their website is easy for consumers to use and is simple yet elegant - not your typical website by any means. When it comes to futons, Wayfair sets the industry standard They earn our highest rating.
Overstock began in 1999 near Salt Lake City, Utah. It actually took over for another website called Discounts Direct. They're known for selling home decor and furniture at a discounted price.
Selling other company's products
Overstock focuses on having lower price points because they purchase other companies' overstocked products, hence their name. Then they sell it to their customers at a discount. They rank high in employee and customer satisfaction and have won numerous awards for their good work. The company is only online, which sets them apart from a lot of their competitors. For futons, they have everything from a simple futon mattress to chairs, beds and couches. There is a wide variety to pick from, as they have 972 options in the futon category of the website.
Variety of inventory
Overstock's futons range in price from $123.75 for just a futon mattress to $1,547.99 for a futon couch with additional storage and a trundle. The website includes information about the futons' dimensions both folded and as a bed as well as weight limit capacities and seat depths. Overstock includes multiple photos of their futons both folded and in a bed and they include a variety of angles. There are numerous customer reviews on their products and they are easy to navigate through. Overstock also provides an easy to navigate sort and filter to narrow down the futons to what you are looking for.
Free product shipping
Shipping with Overstock can take up to 10 days from ordering. Because there are situations when an extended time is needed, they do request you give them 4 weeks to get your item. You can check the product description to see the estimated shipping calculator. The products are all delivered to your house, and they do not offer assembly on the items.
Overstock offers extended warranties with their products for a fee.
High in customer satisfaction
Overstock has an "A+" rating with the Better Business Bureau and has outstanding customer reviews. There are a plethora of reviews raving about how quickly items arrive and that they arrive without damages. Customers seem to be pleased with what they are receiving. There are some negative reviews about products being on the cheaper side and breaking easily, but there weren't many of those.
Great store for getting a futon
Overall, we strongly suggest looking into Overstock when looking to buy a futon. They have a large variety to choose from, on a user-friendly website. They are well supported by both employees and customers. With the ease of their return policy, you have nothing to lose.
Totally Furniture began in 2002 in Orlando, Florida. They are a small family owned business and operate solely online. They do not have inventory on hand, instead all products are shipped to you directly from the manufacturer.
Shipping direct from the manufacturer can result in a quicker delivery than what you might get elsewhere. However Totally Furniture is not able to look items over as an extra layer of quality control. This can cause some frustrations in customers needing to return products. Since they ship directly from the manufacturer it takes away that opportunity for an extra set of eyes to do a quality control check.
Totally Furniture has a price range of $204.69 for just a futon mattress to $1,385.99 for a futon mattress and a frame that includes a stain and clear lacquer finish on it. If you want a cheap frame to go with your futon mattress, that will cost an additional $207 for the least expensive option. When looking for the size of the futon, Totally Furniture only gives one size, they do not inform you of both folded and bed size. The website goes into details on what is unique about each piece, the warranty and its features. They do not, however, include customer reviews to help in deciding if a certain futon is for you.
Shipping typically 1-3 weeks
When an item ships to you from the manufacturer, it will be delivered within 1 to 3 weeks. They use FedEx and UPS as their primary shipping options, but for large items will use a 3rd party freight company. Totally Furniture delivers to 48 states, the exceptions being Hawaii and Alaska. They do not offer an option for assembly with their shipping, so you are on your own to get your futon put together. Remember, when shipping with Totally Furniture, they have very little control over what's going on. This is because the furniture all ships directly from the manufacturer so Totally Furniture never actually touches your order.
Not all items are returnable
Totally Furniture has a refund period of 7 days from delivery. If your product were to arrive damaged, they request you let them know within 48 hours so they can send a replacement. If the item did not arrive damaged, the customer will be responsible for the shipping costs round trip during a return. This can add up and get pricey. Some manufacturers do not allow returns and those are listed on the Totally Furniture website. Special orders are also not eligible for returns. The extended warranties are through the manufacturer and can be anywhere from 1 month to 10 years.
Customers like what they see
The reviews on Totally Furniture were primarily positive. Customers like that they provide stellar customer service. Products are also a great quality and they have a strong variety of selection to choose from. The negative reviews out there are from customers needing refunds or not reading the refund policy and trying to return after the approved window of time.
Overall, Totally Furniture is a strong choice when choosing a store to purchase a futon from. They have a great variety and quick shipping times. They ship right from the manufacturer which helps keep some of the cost down for the consumer. Totally Furniture has almost every kind of futon and color combination you could imagine.
Founded by Carlyle Weinberger in Chicago, Ashley Furniture started as a small family business in 1945 and has expanded to stores all over the United States. They have physical stores and also offer the opportunity to shop online. They sell a wide variety of furniture which includes futons.
Using the online store
Ashley Furniture offers over 85 different futons with multiple options of colors and styles. They range in price from $159.99 for a metal frame to $1,141.98 for a futon sectional with additional storage. When you go to the online store, you have a variety of sorting options on how to view the futons. They include best seller, price low to high, price high to low, customer rating, new arrivals and names a-z. We did find that searching with price high to low did not show any products above $800 yet there were more expensive options with other sorting options. The website also offers filters to help narrow your search when shopping for futons. These filters include price, average rating, material, brand, style, design, color and upholstery features.
No cost for shipping
Ashley Furniture offers free ground shipping when you order online. With the shipping comes a variety of delivery options to choose from.
Easy return policy
Ashley Furniture offers a return policy. Within 72 hours of receiving your futon, you must contact them for a return. We suggest assembling it quickly to make sure nothing is damaged before your return window expires. To acquire the refund your item must be new and unused and be returned with all of the parts and accessories that came with it. If you purchase an item on clearance, they are final sale items and can only be returned if they arrived damaged. Ashley Furniture states that a refund of payment will take 7-10 business days.
The Better Business Bureau gave Ashley Furniture a "B+" rating. Most reviews have been positive. Some negative reviews described difficulties with processing a return. The other complaints are regarding the short return window and paying for delivery when it's not offered for free. Positive reviews included their large variety, affordability and ease of ordering.
Financing and large inventory
Overall, we find Ashley Furniture to be a top contender when ordering futons. They have a variety of options with different fabrics, colors and sizes. They also offer financing if needed for 60 months with no minimum purchase and no down payment. They had a superior amount of products to choose from hitting every price point and budget. There are a few futon stores that rank a little higher than Ashley, but you should feel comfortable ordering and buying from here.
Home Depot is a well known home improvement store with locations all over the country. The company was founded in 1978 by 2 men named Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank in Atlanta, Georgia. The company boasts that they are now the largest retailer for home improvement with 2,319 retail stores in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Everyone knows that Home Depot has all the supplies you might need from simply changing a lightbulb, to painting a house, to a full home renovation.
Home Depot offers 161 options when it comes to a futon, ranging from $118 for just a metal frame to $1,215 for a faux leather futon sofa. When looking at their inventory, you can view product details, the specifics about the futon, customer reviews and a question and answer section. You also have the ability to add on a protection plan and select your shipping method. They also allow you to see what is in stock at the store closest to you.
Variety of shipping options
With Home Depot being a big box store, they have the opportunity to offer both free ship to store pickup and free delivery options. Depending on if the futon you order is in stock, there is the option for same day and next day express delivery for an additional fee. Home Depot also offers curbside pickup. This option is available daily from 9am to 6pm. When planning for shipping, the standard shipping option takes 3 to 5 business days plus processing time. If you reside in Hawaii or Alaska you will need to add 2 additional business days.
Home Depot has a free and easy return policy. You will have 90 days with most items but only 30 days to return furniture such as a futon. If you purchase using a Home Depot credit card, they extend the return window to 365 days. For an in-store return, you simply take the item to any Home Depot with proof of purchase and a photo ID. If you no longer have proof of purchase, they are able to try to look up the order in their system, but it is not a guarantee. They will refund the item immediately to the original form of payment or you may exchange it for another item. They also have the option of an online return where you will request the return online and they will email you a shipping label. You then take the item to the nearest shipping store.
Home Depot has mostly positive reviews. The Better Business Bureau has awarded them an "A+" rating. The positive reviews are primarily about their hassle-free ordering and ease of delivery. There are also negative reviews out there and the most common complaints are about items not shipping on time or arriving damaged. Also it can be a bit of a challenge to get the items correctly delivered if you experience an issue.
Overall, Home Depot is a reputable business to look for a futon. They have an excellent rating and return policy. The ease of returning to a big box store is also a plus because they are easier to find than a small retailer. But, of course, furniture isn't exactly Home Depot's bread-and-butter, and some shoppers prefer to get their futon from a store that focuses just on bedding and other furniture.
Lowe's began as a small town hardware store in the state of North Carolina. In 1921, L.S. Lowe founded Lowe's in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. In 1995, they joined the digital world with a website to order from. In 2007, Lowe's expanded outside of the United States by opening a store in Canada and in 2015 they opened in India.
Good search options
Lowe's has 123 products to search when looking for a futon. They have the option to search by size (full, queen) or price. The cheapest option is $104 for a futon chair to $1,629 for a contemporary/modern polyester futon. They have multiple pictures of each futon to show different angles and positions. They also have an overview of the futon, the specific details of each one, customer reviews, and a question and answer section. Included on the item page is also a pdf for the warranty and the use and care of the futon.
Variety of ways to get a futon
Lowe's offers free shipping on orders totaling over $45 before tax. To qualify for free shipping, products must weigh under 150 lbs, so check the weight of your futon before purchasing if you want free shipping. Shipping times do not include processing time, and starts after the item has shipped. Packages will arrive within one to seven business days after it is processed, but they do request seven to ten business days for bulky items. So depending on the size of your futon, it may take a few extra days. Lowe's also offers expedited shipping for an extra fee and some products are available for same-day pickup. One thing we could not find was an option to pay extra for assembly of a futon.
Easy return policy
Lowe's offers a 90-day return policy, and with select Lowe's accounts they offer a 365-day return policy. As long as you have proof of purchase, your refund will be sent to the original form of payment. If you do not have proof of purchase, Lowe's can attempt to look it up from the card used to pay, My Lowe's card, or phone number. If that doesn't work, then at their discretion they can issue store credit, but this will be on a case by case basis. Regardless of if you have proof of purchase or not, you are required to show a picture ID for any refund. To start a return, simply go to any Lowe's and they will be able to assist with resolving the issue. If you are not located near a physical store, you are able to request a shipping label to send it back yourself.
When checking the Better Business Bureau website, it appears that Lowe's has an A+ rating. Some of the negative comments included receiving multiple damaged items, so make sure to check for damages as soon as the futon is set up. There are also complaints about the extended warranty of items being difficult to use. There were a lot more positive comments, especially pertaining to the ease of returns, large selection of items, quality of materials and the friendly staff.
Decent choice to pick
Overall, Lowe's is an ok choice when looking to purchase a futon. They have a variety of options to choose from in different colors and styles. Their return policy is simple and one that you can do with ease. A negative was not being able to find an option to have Lowe's assemble the futon for you, as other stores offer that option. The positive responses by customers still make Lowe's a good choice to consider when looking to purchase a futon.
Walmart was founded in Rogers, Arkansas in 1962 by Sam Walton. They now have stores in 24 different countries around the world. They have 10,500 stores, a website and an app. Walmart is one of the most well-known big box stores and is well recognized by most. With over 1,000 options to choose from, they have a variety of futons to consider.
Helpful search options
Walmart has a variety of options to narrow down your search when shopping for a futon. These include twin futons, twin futon mattresses, futon sets, fabric futons, memory foam futons, full futon mattress, traditional futons, faux leather futons, velvet futons, futon frames, microfiber futons, leather futons, king futons, as well as different colors.
Over 1,000 futons to choose from
They have over 1,000 different futons to choose from, so these options will come in handy when trying to narrow them down. The lowest priced futon is $169 which is a metal frame futon with a mattress included. The highest priced is $827.76 for a frame that includes storage and drawers and a futon mattress. There are finish options and mattress colors to choose from. Walmart's website offers details on the futons as well as customer reviews on individual products.
Free 2-day shipping
When it comes to shipping, Walmart typically has free 2-day shipping on items over $35. They ship with FedEx and UPS. They also sometimes offer ships to store for free if shipping isn't covered. When it comes to Walmart's third-party marketplace vendors, shipping times will vary. An estimated arrival date will be listed on the website when placing an order.
90-day return window
If the futon needs to be returned, Walmart has the option to do it in store or by going online for a shipping label and taking it to FedEx or UPS. They have a 90-day return window for items purchased from Walmart. If the item came from a third party Marketplace vendor, then their individual refund policy will be listed with the item online. When making a return, you will need a photo ID, especially if you do not have a receipt. Walmart is able to use the card charged with purchase to look up the receipt for you as long as you have that original form of payment. When getting a refund on a debit or credit card, it will be issued to the same card and available within 10 days.
When it comes to how customers feel about shopping for big purchases like a futon at Walmart, there are mixed reviews. When going in person there are an overabundance of complaints about the lack of employees around to help and about their lack of knowledge of the store once an employee is found. These issues cover a vast majority of the negative reviews found. The variety of products offered by Walmart and their lower price point gave positive reviews to the store. Customers also liked the ease of shopping in the app or online and how user friendly these options were.
Middle of the road
Overall, Walmart is a good option if you are looking for a middle of the road futon. If you are looking for craftsmanship or something elegant, this would not be the place to shop. They have plenty of options and making returns is very easy. Just be sure to double check when ordering if you are purchasing from Walmart or one of their third-party Marketplace vendors. This will change your shipping and return details.
Kohl's has been in business since 1962 and started expanding in 1992. They opened their doors in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Since opening, they now have 1100 stores in 49 states. The only state that does not have a store is Hawaii. In 2001, Kohl's added an online retail store. Kohl's has also given over $750 million to charities nationwide.
When shopping for a futon on the Kohl's site, they only have 34 to choose from. The cheapest option is $165 and the most expensive goes up to $1,620. They don't have as much variety as other retailers we evaluated. You are, however, able to apply coupons to their futons which can help lower the cost and make them more affordable. Depending on if it's currently an offering, you can also earn Kohl's Cash and have extra money to spend at a later date.
Kohl's offers free shipping on items over $49 everyday with no exclusions. Large and oversized items are subject to a surcharge, but you will know about that before you check out. With standard shipping, your item will arrive within 3 to 6 business days unless otherwise noted. You can also select ship to store on some of the futons; you would just need to look at checkout if that is an option you wish to pursue.
180-day return window
Items purchased from the Kohl's website may be returned to any Kohl's store location or by mail. They allow returns for up to 180 days from the original purchase date with or without a receipt. Shipping costs, if any, are not refundable if you need to make a return.
Avoid the Kohl's card
Kohl's has an "A-" rating with the Better Business Bureau and is a reputable company to shop from. They had positive reviews praising the company for their sale prices, the ability to make returns for 180 days, items being good quality, and the ease of returns. Kohl's does have numerous negative reviews relating to the Kohl's store credit card. Customers complained about payments not being credited to their accounts and also some had their cards sent to collections even if they made a payment. The other complaint customers had were orders being canceled unexpectedly and being very difficult to reorder.
Shop the sales
Overall, Kohl's is a "just average" choice when looking for a futon. They do not have a huge selection, so they are not one of our top retailers despite having great sales as well as free shipping. And, we can't recommend signing up for a Kohl's credit card to pay for your purchase due to all the negative reviews and issues stated about the cards.
Natural Home (by The Futon Shop) was founded in 1976 in San Francisco, California. They are a farm-to-furniture company and they do not utilize a middleman in the process. They have 3 physical locations you can visit in California, located in San Mateo, Santa Rosa, and San Marcos.
Organic and natural
What sets Natural Home apart from their competitors is the materials used to make their futons. Everything is 100% organic and natural, eco-friendly, handmade in the USA, and with all recycled materials. They have four certifications to go along with these: USDA Organic, Confidence in Textiles, GOLS Certified Latex and GOTS Certified organic wool. The ingredients used in Natural Home's products were all created by nature. These include wool, cotton, latex, coconut, spring and hemp. Natural Home carries your traditional futon, chairs, bunk beds, and daybeds. This retailer also carries outdoor futon frames, which isn't something we saw at other stores. If you have any questions on which futon is for you, they also provide a detailed FAQ section on their website to assist.
Natural Home ships to 48 states, the exceptions being Hawaii and Alaska. Shipping is expected to take 3 weeks on average. When shopping around their store, they do offer free shipping on most items and this is indicated on the product page. If you happen to live close enough to a physical location, you are also able to do free in-store pickup 7 days a week.
Natural Home offers a limited warranty on their products. You will have 24 hours to notify them if something is wrong with your order. They advertise that the product you receive may look different than what you see online or on the floor due to each piece being handcrafted. They offer a 5-year warranty on wooden frames, 1-year warranty on platform beds, a 7-year warranty on futon mattresses, slipcovers and pillows. These are all defect warranties and do not cover normal wear and tear. For their return policy, Natural Home offers exchanges only and nothing on custom orders.
Negative customer opinions
We were ready to give Natural Home a high rating due to their natural ingredients and handmade pieces. However, customer reviews prevented that from happening. The only positive reviews for Natural Home that could be found were from those that had shopped in person. For those that ordered over the phone or online, it was a far different story. Customers complained about products arriving moldy or molding shortly after arrival. They also stated that it was extremely difficult to get someone on the phone to process an exchange or return. There was a lot of frustration and customers warned others not to shop at this store.
Go to the physical store
Overall, the natural and unique features of Natural Home kept them out of the bottom of the reviews. If you are able to go into a physical store, this might be an excellent option. However, if you are not located in California, and would have to order online, it would be wise to look elsewhere or you may be disappointed.
Futonland is the largest retailer of futons in our evaluation. They sell the beds, mattresses, and covers for the futons. Futonland was founded in 1995 in Queens, New York. They pride themselves on not being a big box store and they sell to all 50 states.
Variety of options
When shopping at Futonland, you will see that they have a variety of options. They have options as small as a futon chair and as large as a queen size futon bed. Another offering they provide is Amish futon frames. Futonland also makes custom futons if you need something more unique.
Various forms of delivery
When looking into shipping with Futonland it will take approximately 2 to 3 weeks, however it could take up to 4 months when ordering a custom futon. Futonland offers five types of delivery.
With all of the delivery options, they require someone over the age of 18 to be present to sign for the item and for accessibility for a 48-foot trailer to deliver the item.
Decent return policy
Futonland has a decent return policy. If you cancel your item before it processes, it is the easiest and cheapest option. If the order has been processed but has not arrived, you are subject to a 20% restocking fee. In the event that you received free shipping, you are also responsible to pay back what shipping would have been. Once the item arrives, you have 30 days to submit a return. The item must be in its original condition, free of stains and damages. Once they receive and process your return, they will send your refund. They do, however, charge that 20% restocking fee on returns.
"F" rating on BBB
When checking Futonland's reputation on the Better Business Bureau's website, we found a not-so-pleasant answer. They have received an "F" rating and many customer warnings to stay away. Most of the complaints are from customers who were sent the wrong items. There is a complaint about a custom order taking over 10 weeks and then Futonland canceled that delivery too. They then stated on the BBB website that if the customer would choose to cancel the order, they would be responsible for the 20% restocking fee plus the shipping costs which amount to $780.
Avoid shopping here
Overall, we cannot recommend Futonland as a safe place to purchase a futon. While they have a wide range of options, your chances of getting what you ordered are slim. If you happen to get lucky and get the correct item, it most likely won't arrive in the promised time. We encourage you to shop at one of the other retailers in our review instead.
Traditionally a Japanese style of bedding, a futon consists of a mattress and duvet cover and both are able to be folded and stored away. In Japan, futons are used on a tatami, which is a type of mat. In the United States, typically a futon is used on a wooden or metal frame instead. Futons became popular in the USA in the 1980's and are traditionally thicker and harder to fold up than those in Japan.
There are many retailers to consider when going to shop for a futon, between small businesses, big box stores, online and even an app on your phone. There are a variety of style options to choose too. What color mattress do you need? Do you want a wood frame or a metal one? A chair futon, a couch futon or a bed futon? Once you have an idea of what you are looking for, we have helped narrow down the stores to shop from to find it.
