Known for its wide range of styles and price points and with a focus on convenience, they've built a reputation for delivering good-quality home items directly to your door. No matter your taste - modern, rustic, or something in between - Wayfair has something for everyone, helping you create a home you'll love.

Lowest-priced items aren't really futons

Looking at the lowest-priced futons available on Wayfair, you'll mostly spot items that don't really resemble a traditional futon. For example, at $71.99, Trule's pink upholstered floor cushion isn't much bigger than a bed pillow, and The Twillery Co's Game Lounge Chair Reclining Floor Game Chair ($93.99) isn't much of a bed either.

High-end options available

Similarly, at the highest end of the price spectrum ($2,400+), you'll also find a lot of traditional-looking sofa sleepers, rather than a space-friendly futon. But, keep scrolling a bit and you'll come across items like Loon Peak's Han Futon (with a super-rustic wood style) for $2,299.99, the Mobi Max 3-in-1 Sleeper/Loveseat/Sofa Bed with Storage for $1,179.99, and so on.

Filters are your friend

Bottom line? Plan on using the filters if you don't want to be scrolling for a while to find what you need among the 2,300 "futons and futon beds” in the inventory at Wayfair. Fortunately, those filters are really specific: if you've got a particular size, color, price, upholstery or frame material, or brand in mind, those are just a few of the available ways to narrow down what Wayfair has to offer.

Some futons have thousands of ratings

One of our favorite ways to shop at Wayfair is to look for items that have a lot of customer reviews. If so many people shop for futons (and other things) on this website, why not take advantage of the feedback they provide. While a couple of convertible sleeper sofas have the most reviews in the Futons and Futon Beds category (with over 4,100 ratings), Winston Porter's Johnte futons all have over a thousand ratings, with models typically averaging 4+ stars. Or, if that brand's $1,000+ price point is a little much for your budget, Laurel Foundry Modern Farmhouse has a traditional futon in the Anders model with over 250 ratings averaging a perfect 5 stars, and priced at $799.99. Go even lower still and pay just $489.99 for The Twillery Co's Stratford model, which averaged an impressive 4.3 stars across more than 850 ratings.

Get it assembled, maybe even for free

The good news just keeps on coming at Wayfair: nearly all of the futons we saw had free delivery, and some of them are even designated as coming with "free full service delivery”. What does that mean? Your futon will be brought to the room of your choosing (not just plopped on your doorstep), assembled if needed, and all of the packaging will be removed for you. That's a fantastic perk if you need your futon carried up a flight of stairs or you don't have the tools (or the ability) to put it together yourself. And, on most of the futons that don't come with assembly included, you can add that service on for an extra fee, usually just over $100.

Swatch samples on some futons

Not sure about the right upholstery color, or if the one you're eyeing will match your current decor? Wayfair's got your back there too: many futon models have multiple colors, and you can order free samples. We did notice, though, that not every upholstery color may have a swatch available. For example, on the Serta Monroe Full Size Convertible Sofa, the furniture comes in five color options, but only the Light Grey Linen was offered for the free sample.

Ample product information

We can't say enough good things about how thorough Wayfair's product information is. From how-to videos to the overview that lets you know if assembly is required and if the tools are included, there should be no surprises when your futon arrives.

Help is on hand

And, if for some reason you still have questions, all you have to do is pop open the chat to get live help. Whether you want suggestions from a specialist to help pick the right futon for your space, or you need to know if unlatching it from the couch position to put it in bed position is going to require two people, you can easily get the help you need.

Return shipping could be costly

With respect to returns, futons are covered by Wayfair's standard 30-day policy. That sounds pretty amazing, but you'll have to pay for the costs of the return shipping; they'll be deducted from your refund. Wayfair doesn't come out and tell you how much it might cost to send back a futon, but we're guessing that number is significantly greater than zero.

Great reputation and plenty of reviews on futons

Given the size of Wayfair and the sheer number of transactions the company has every year, it's only natural to find complaints in the thousands. But, Wayfair still earns an "A+” rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, which means that they're doing a great job in handling whatever comes up. Plus, you do have all of those shopper reviews on many of the futons to go by, so it's easy to choose one that works just as well in person as it appears online.

Still #1 among futon stores

We're still big fans of shopping at Wayfair for futons. Where else will you find a selection of thousands of designs, described in exceptional detail and suitable for every budget? All it takes is a quick peek at the rest of the retailers on our list to see just how much Wayfair stands out. If you're on the hunt for just the right futon, you'll want to make sure Wayfair is at the top of your list. It's definitely #1 on ours.

What can we possibly say about Walmart that you don't already know? As one of the largest retailers worldwide, this store has it all - as long as by "all”, we're referring to low prices, mid quality, and everything from groceries to garden tools. Chances are, if you're shopping for a futon here, you're looking for a bargain. Lucky for you, you won't be disappointed.

Use the filters to save time

When you search up "futons” at Walmart, you're going to see over a thousand matches. We highly recommend using the filters to narrow down the inventory: frame type, frame material, color, style, and availability are just a few that you could apply, so that you don't have to spend hours browsing.

Quality is what you'd imagine...

As you'd expect, there aren't any futons at Walmart that are super high-end. It is Walmart, after all. But, that doesn't mean that you can't get a decently-solid piece of furniture, and some of the futons here are ones we spotted in the inventory of rival stores on our list.

...but still a great value for the money

Plus, with millions of people shopping at Walmart online, you've got the benefit of other customers' feedback. And that applies to futons too. For example, the Novogratz Vintage Tufted Split Back Futon had over 1,100 ratings when we visited the website, averaging a respectable 4 stars out of 5. That's even more impressive when you consider that the futon would only set you back $298 to $379, depending on the option you picked. You could also get the Better Homes & Gardens Nola Modern Futon for $329 (644 ratings, averaging 4.3 stars), the Alden Design Fabric Covered Futon Sofa Bed for $207 (655 ratings, averaging 4 stars), or the Walmart-brand Mainstays Memory Foam Futon for $198 (4,751 ratings, averaging 4.3 stars). It's easy to see that while you're not going to be buying a piece of furniture that's going to last long enough to pass down as an heirloom, you may be pleasantly surprised at the quality for the price.

Free, fast delivery on most futons

Another perk? Most of the futons at Walmart ship for free and arrive in 1-3+ days. As you browse the selection, you'll see that at a glance. A few may even be available for same-day delivery or in-store pickup, if you've got a furniture emergency and need that futon ASAP.

Pay attention to marketplace partners

Why do we say "most” futons? The answer highlights one of the trickier aspects of shopping at Walmart for some product categories: the website features third-party "marketplace” partners, who have their own shipping and return policies. For example, Walmart has a standard 90-day return window, but when you buy one through a partner, you may only have 30 days - and you might not be able to make your return at your local Walmart. Pro tip: if you want to avoid futons that aren't fulfilled by Walmart itself, you may want to skip the ones that don't say "Save with W+” on them. It's a pretty good indicator that there's a marketplace seller behind the listing.

One of the best picks for futons (surprisingly)

Are you surprised to see that Walmart earns such a high rating from us? Compared with many of the futon stores on our review, Walmart actually ranks quite highly: the inventory is budget-friendly and vast, the shipping and return policies are generous (as long as you stick with Walmart-fulfilled items), and most of the futons have shopper feedback you can easily use to guide your purchase decision. What's not to like? As long as you're not looking for a piece of furniture that's going to last for decades, you'll probably appreciate what Walmart has to offer as a futon store.

Lowe's might be your go-to for hardware and home improvement, but they also carry a decent selection of futons to complement your living spaces. With a long history of customer service dating back to 1921 and over 2,000 stores nationwide, Lowe's is a reliable and familiar choice for shoppers looking for quality furniture with straightforward policies and competitive prices.

Good range of options under $200

When it comes to futons, Lowe's offers a compact but practical selection of around 150 options from Novogratz, DHP, Serta, and more. Whether you're furnishing a small apartment, sprucing up a guest room, or looking for a versatile piece of furniture that works for seating and sleeping, you'll find a range of designs here. In the "Under $150” category, you're going to see things that aren't necessarily futons, like floor cushions that can be used sitting or lying down, or a bed frame without a mattress. The first "real” futon we spotted when looking for the lowest-priced option was the Light Coffee Contemporary/Modern Flannel Twin Sofa Bed, listed at a bargain cost of $174. Lowe's had several other budget-friendly styles under $200, but again, not all of them were the usual frame-plus-mattress combo you're probably interested in.

No traditional futons over $900

So, how about the other end of the spectrum? Funny enough, you won't spot traditional futons there either. Lowe's offers several sofa beds in the $900-and-up range, but the highest-end classic futon was the Mealiz Pink Contemporary/Modern Polyester model by Furniture of America, priced at $892.99. That model comes in several color options (all striped) and may take some time to get to you: when we looked, our "get it by” date was almost three weeks in the future.

Free shipping and assembly (for a fee)

Lowe's still scores points for convenience, though. Once you've chosen your futon, you can enjoy free shipping directly to your home or pick it up at a nearby store. Delivery times are typically quicker than the futon we just mentioned, and the website keeps you informed about stock levels and estimated arrival dates. Plus, if you're not confident in your futon-assembly skills, look for ones that are marked "installation available”. It costs extra (about $115 in our test area and on the futons we looked at), but may be worth it if you've got limited mobility (or time).

90 days to take (or send) it back

Lowe's 90-day return policy is another standout feature, offering hassle-free returns either in-store or by mail. Just be sure to keep your receipt and return the futon in new, unused condition.

Not much feedback on futons, but great overall reputation

One downside? Customer reviews on individual futons are sparse, which can make it harder to get a sense of the furniture's real-world durability or comfort. That said, Lowe's overall reputation for quality and customer service is backed by its "A+” Better Business Bureau rating, so you can shop with confidence even if you're flying a bit blind when picking the right futon.

Better than you'd expect for futons

Lowe's is a solid choice for futons if you're looking for a no-nonsense shopping experience with dependable policies and a decent range of styles. While the selection isn't as vast as some competitors', the combination of affordable pricing, free delivery, and a generous return policy makes Lowe's worth considering for your next futon purchase.

The Home Depot is famous for being a one-stop shop for everything from remodeling your kitchen to sprucing up your backyard. But did you know they also have a surprisingly diverse selection of futons? With over 2,300 stores across North America and a robust online platform, The Home Depot offers a hassle-free way to browse and buy furniture. Whether you're after a stylish piece for your living room or a simple sleeper for your guest room, Home Depot's futon selection might just surprise you.

Ever-changing inventory

We've found that the inventory and pricing on futons at The Home Depot can fluctuate a bit from one day to the next. For example, when we started our research on a Monday, there were 94 products in the category, and the lowest-priced was $106. Just five days later, the selection had dropped to just 87 - but so did the prices, with the most affordable two items being a futon frame (no mattress) for $84.99 and Homestock's Gray Modern Futon Sofa Bed for $102.29. In other words, if you're set on buying your futon from The Home Depot but nothing you see makes you quite ready to hit the "add to cart” button, try checking back in a few days.

Most futons cost less than $1,000

The Home Depot's overall futon inventory covers everything from minimalist metal frames to chic, office-appropriate designs. You'll find futons from brands like DHP, Novogratz, and J&E Home, with options to suit a range of budgets and tastes. Want to narrow down the search? The site makes it easy to sort by price, color, frame material, upholstery type, or customer ratings. But, there's nothing that's going to break the bank: on the higher end of the price spectrum, most futons are still under $1,000 (with a few exceptions like ComHoma's Fabric Futon Couches in black for $2,039.99 or gray for $1,784.99).

Free shipping or in-store pickup

Plus, free shipping is included on all futons, and many can be delivered within a few days. If you prefer to pick it up yourself, you can choose free in-store pickup at your nearest location. We love how The Home Depot tells you at a glance which futons are available for both options (though we don't know why anyone would choose to pick it up themselves if they can have it brought to their house for free).

30-day returns

The Home Depot's return policy is straightforward: you can return most futons in-store within 30 days of purchase for free, as long as it's in new condition and you've got your receipt. Shipping back a futon might not be the easiest option, but with so many locations nationwide, in-person returns are convenient. Just make sure to check the return window for your specific item to avoid any hiccups (manufacturer policies).

Store reputation is solid, but futons need feedback

We've got no concerns about the reputation of this home improvement superstore. With an "A+" rating from the Better Business Bureau, The Home Depot's obviously doing just fine in keeping customers happy and responding appropriately to complaints. We do wish that there were more reviews of the futons themselves, though: most of the furniture here doesn't have a single rating, and the futons that do have comments typically only have 1-10 of them. That won't give you a lot to go on, if you're trying to pick a futon that's going to be able to withstand frequent houseguests or be comfy on those nights where you're banished to the living room.

Good choice if they have the futon you want

At the end of the day, The Home Depot ranks as above average when it comes to futons. It's competitive with other stores on our list when it comes to selection and hassle-free (and actually free) delivery, and the website is about as easy as it gets for online shopping. Could there be more futons in a broader range of styles? Yes. But, if The Home Depot has the perfect one for your playroom or living room, you can confidently add it to your cart without needing to do a ton of comparison shopping elsewhere.

Aosom

Aosom - which is pronounced exactly like the word "awesome” - wants to put great products at fantastic prices in your home. They've got several brands and categories in their inventory, from PawHut products for pets to HomCom furniture and decor.

Affordable futons in a limited range of styles

Aosom is going to be a site you like if you're on a tight budget for your new futon. We didn't spot anything in the inventory of nearly 50 futons that wasn't between $100 to $300, give or take a few dollars. That being said, most of the furniture they list in the "futons” category isn't the sturdy-framed sofa-or-bed style you might have in mind. The closest in-stock item we saw was the Convertible Sofa Bed for $304.99 (discounted 30% from its regular retail price of $439.99). The style is pretty clever: it can be used as a casual-yet-stylish sofa, with both sides up, a bed with both sides down, or with one side propped up for use as a chaise longue (or lounge, as we'd say in the US). There were some less expensive models with the same style, but the majority of the items in Aosom's futon inventory are actually chairs that can be extended into beds.

Easy to save a few bucks

At Aosom, you can save $5 on your first order if you sign up for email/text messages. We're not entirely sure it's worth getting marketing messages just to save five bucks, but you do you! You're also likely to see plenty of discounts as you browse: we got a surprise 10% discount added to our cart while we shopped, there's a decent clearance section, and some futons had even deeper savings posted when we clicked on the individual product listings.

Free delivery within continental US

Another way an Aosom futon will be a bargain is delivery: all futons ship for free. This retailer only delivers in the lower 48 states, but with warehouses on both the East and West Coasts, you can expect your furniture to arrive within 3 business days.

30-day returns, 1-year warranty

Returns? Aosom tries to make it as easy-breezy as possible. You've got 30 days to make the request, and there are no restocking fees. But, if it's going back simply because you changed your mind about the futon or didn't like it once it came out of the box, Aosom may ask you to cover the cost of the return shipping. Don't be concerned about product quality, though: unless otherwise specified, Aosom covers all of its items with a 1-year warranty.

Solid reputation (even if product assembly is tricky)

How about reputation? We're happy to say that the Better Business Bureau has given Aosom an "A+” rating and accreditation. There were only 45 complaints filed there over the last three years, and all of them received an appropriate, helpful response. The story is the same over on Trustpilot, where Aosom has a 4.3-star average across nearly a thousand reviews. While many of the comments left by customers have nothing to do with futons (lots of reviews from people who bought dog products), the overall picture painted is one of decent products at good prices, and with a solid customer support response when problems pop up. Just be aware that many of them mention the installation/assembly directions being hard to follow, and we're pretty sure that would apply to a furniture item like a futon as well.

Go for it if there's a futon you like

All told, Aosom gets an above-average rating from us. While the futon selection is a little limited for our taste and we'd like to see some larger models in the inventory, the retailer has a strong track record of customer satisfaction. So, if you happen to like one of the smaller chair-style futons you see (or anything else Aosom offers), we'd say go for it.

Kohl's

If you're hunting for deals on everything from clothing to furniture, Kohl's is probably already on your radar. Known for its frequent sales, generous Kohl's Cash rewards, and wide product selection, this popular retailer makes it easy to furnish your home, stock your wardrobe, and grab gifts for any occasion - all without breaking the bank.

Fewer than 2 dozen futons

But, when it comes to futons, Kohl's selection is limited, and that's being generous. We only found 19 options during our most recent visit to the site, and with two of them designated as "closeout deals”, we wouldn't count on them still being in the inventory when you go shopping. Still, maybe you have some of that Kohl's Cash to spend and you're determined to use it on a futon. So, let's take a look at what you might be able to buy here.

Even super-basic futons are spendy

On the low end of the spectrum, Kohl's was offering the HomCom Single Person Sleeper Chair (and, fun fact: HomCom is the in-house brand of another retailer on our list). Available in two colors and priced from $239.10 to $298.40, it's a fairly basic one-person seating-and-sleeping option. At the time of our visit, it had three dozen customer ratings that averaged out to a better-than-average 4.3 stars out of 5. When fully extended, this "futon” really gives more of an "upgraded army cot” vibe, but it's definitely a space-saver.

Pay attention to the details

The most expensive futon in Kohl's inventory was the navy-colored version of the Safavieh Bushwick Foldable Futon Bed for $805.49. We're not entirely sure why that color merits a $400+ increase over the blush and gray options ($382.49 and $391.49, respectively). At either price point, this futon feels more like what people envision when shopping for a futon: stylish sofa during the day, fold-down back to turn it into a bed at night. However, we noticed that the furniture has a weight limit of 220 lbs. - which is reasonable for most sleepers, but what if you have two people sitting on the couch? We recommend paying close attention to the details of the futon you're looking at - and fortunately, Kohl's does a great job of providing all of that.

Hooray for customer reviews

We love that Kohl's lets customers leave reviews on everything they have to sell. It probably won't surprise you, though, that futons aren't exactly the hottest ticket items here. A few futons had no reviews, and most of them only had a few to speak of. The one with the most reviews, averaging a decent 3.9-out-of-5 stars, was the Atwater Living Tufted Transitional Futon, with 67 ratings. What customers had to say about this futon was really helpful: "not comfortable but eye-catching” and "springs broke in less than 5 months” were just two of the comments that stood out to us, along with photos from both happy and unsatisfied owners.

Some generous policies

On a positive note, Kohl's offers free shipping on all orders of $49+, and as far as we can tell, that applies to all of the futons they carry. Likewise, the 90-day return window for non-Kohl's Card purchases and 120 days for Kohl's Card orders seems to be valid on futons. But, since Kohl's doesn't cover the return shipping costs on any purchases large or small, you may want to see if your local store will accept your return instead of sending your futon back.

Just okay for futon shopping

Kohl's is pretty well-loved by its loyal customers, and its "A+” rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau are proof of that. We just wish that they carried more futons (and that the ones they do sell had a bit more - and higher - feedback). We're big fans of this retailer too, but we just can't get too excited about Kohl's as a top pick for buying a futon.

Overstock

Overstock began in 1999 as a pioneer in the world of online discount shopping, offering surplus goods at attractive prices. Over the years, it's grown into a full-fledged e-commerce giant, known for its extensive selection of furniture, home decor, and more - all with frequent sales and free shipping perks. In 2023, Overstock made headlines by acquiring the iconic Bed Bath & Beyond brand, bringing it back as an online-only retailer. Though the two brands remain closely tied under the Beyond, Inc. umbrella (as you'll see in the twin-like similarities in their inventories), Overstock continues to operate under its original name.

700+ futons to consider

Speaking of inventory, you'll find that Overstock's selection of futons is constantly changing. When we started our research, there were 760 futons on offer. Just a week later, there were 775. It's a good indicator that if you don't see something you like today, just wait a little while.

Lower-end options with mid ratings

On the low end of the price spectrum at Overstock, you'll find a few tatami mat-style options and some floor chairs, all under $150. To get to a more traditional futon with an actual frame, you'll need to look in the $130+ range. We found the Flared Arms Modern Comfortable Loveseat starting at $159.99; when not being used as a one- or cozy two-person seat, you can fold the arms down and extend it into a bed. But, with a customer rating average not quite reaching 2 stars, you might want to skip this futon after all.

Higher-end furniture also on offer

On the other end of the prices at Overstock, you'll initially spot sleeper sofas at $1,500+. Keep scrolling, though, and you'll start to see some futons that are a closer match to what you might be picturing. We like the look of the Somette Lodge Storage line - and if you're into the rustic vibe, you might like it too. The one with a woodsy-themed printed mattress was just $967.72 during our visit, and its dozen or so reviews averaged an impressive 4.6 stars out of 5.

Check out the customer reviews, when available

Although many futons at Overstock have no shopper ratings, some of them have feedback you can consider. The most popular one we noticed was the Copper Grove Dixie Oak Full-size 2-drawer Futon Set with Mattress. With nearly 200 reviews, it averaged a solid 4.4 stars and was super-affordable at just $632.93 (down from the MSRP of $1,869).

Tends to have lower prices than sister site

Wondering if you'd find a better price at Bed Bath & Beyond? It's not likely: across most of the futons we cross-checked, the list price was lower at Overstock. Yes, you could take your chances with a spin-the-wheel discount over there and maybe come away with a lower price - or you could just stick with Overstock's straightforward (and already low) prices.

Free shipping, 30 days to initiate returns

Even better, since everything over $49.99 at Overstock ships for free, your futon will come to your doorstep at no extra cost. On the other hand, if you get your new furniture and have a bit of buyer's remorse, you're going to be on the hook for the return shipping cost (which we'd bet isn't cheap). Whether you've changed your mind or there's something wrong with your futon, you'll have 30 days to initiate the process and 45 days to get it back to Overstock.

Reputation is slipping

Unfortunately, Overstock's reputation "beyond” (see what we did there?) the Better Business Bureau's "A+” rating and accreditation for the parent company as a whole... is on the decline. While most of the complaints filed at the BBB specifically reference sister store Bed Bath & Beyond, Overstock has brought in plenty of its own complaints on other third-party review sites. And, sadly, lots of those describe problems with furniture. One customer who ordered an outdoor seating sectional received three damaged chairs and was told that there were no replacement options: Overstock offered a small credit for the damaged pieces or said that the customer could just return the whole thing. Multiple shoppers placed orders for large items (like futons) and had their purchases canceled unexpectedly; when asked, Overstock said that the items were no longer in stock, despite still having them available for purchase on the website. This review said it all: "Buyer beware: the new ‘relaunched' Overstock is not the Overstock you remember.”

Below average among futon stores

We give Overstock a bit higher rating than its sister site, Bed Bath & Beyond: the customer service woes here aren't as rampant (though they're not far off), and if you prefer not to mess around with spin-the-wheel discounts and just start off with the lower of the two prices, you'll want to shop here instead of there. However, because of the piles of complaints we've found, especially ones that describe big-time problems with furniture, we don't think it's going to be a fantastic experience if you buy a futon here. It's too bad, because the selection is really great - but Overstock just doesn't go far enough to make sure those pretty photos of cute items are going to show up in great condition, or to handle problems in a way that leaves customers happy.

Bed Bath & Beyond was once the go-to store for home essentials, famous for its seemingly endless aisles and iconic blue 20%-off coupons. After facing financial struggles and going out of business, it was acquired by Overstock, which has since revived the brand as an online-only shopping destination. While its beloved brick-and-mortar stores are no more (though we've heard they may be making a comeback), Bed Bath & Beyond's new digital presence offers the same variety of home goods, from bedding and furniture to kitchenware and decor, all with competitive pricing. The revamped site aims to keep the legacy alive by combining trusted products with Overstock's e-commerce expertise.

Inventory is very similar to sister site's

But, that leads to the very first thing we noticed: the inventory on the BB&B site is almost futon-by-futon the same as what you'll find on Overstock (who we've reviewed separately). Bed Bath & Beyond seems to have a slightly smaller selection - when we sorted both sites' futons from high price to low, there were some $2,000+ models at Overstock that were missing here - but it's hard to say for sure because BB&B doesn't display the number of options (and sorry, we're not willing to scroll through and count them by hand).

Prices are often higher here

Also, the site navigation is almost identical between the sister sites. You can easily narrow down the futons by delivery options, size, type, color, style, customer ratings, mattress support, and several other criteria. Plus, as you browse what's in stock, you'll quickly be able to determine the price, any additional choices each model may offer, and if there are any customer reviews. Interestingly, the number of reviews isn't the same when looking on both websites. For example, the Serta Morrison Queen Convertible Loveseat had 38 ratings on Overstock, while Bed Bath & Beyond displayed 41. It's worth pointing out as well that this futon was priced at $897.40 here but at $840.44 on Overstock. From where we sit, that would mean it'd be well worth your while to check Overstock's pricing on anything you might be considering at Bed Bath & Beyond.

How big of a discount will you score?

If you're really missing those random coupon mailers, though, just look for the spin-to-win pop-up when you first land on the Bed Bath & Beyond site. You could score a 5% discount (one is stackable, the other isn't), $30 off an order of $300+, or even as much as 20% off. (Pro tip: when we declined to spin the wheel and then left that window open to do other things, we were given that big 20% discount with no spin required, to tempt us to keep shopping.) Overstock doesn't seem to have those kinds of happy little surprises, and that might make your futon more affordable if you buy it through Bed Bath & Beyond. (And maybe that accounts for the slightly higher list prices here - they know that some people will get discounts anyway.)

Free shipping within the continental US, 30 days to return

All futons ship for free within the lower 48 states at Bed Bath & Beyond, because they're all priced at $50+: the threshold for earning no-cost delivery. You'll have 30 days to decide if you want to keep your futon or send it back; just remember that the return shipping costs are on you, and they might not be cheap.

Plenty of complaints at the BBB

How is Bed Bath & Beyond doing reputation-wise, after declaring bankruptcy a few years ago and being bought out by Overstock? It can be a little tricky to suss out the reputation of this particular retailer; for example, BB&B shares the "A+” rating and accreditation with all of the brands in the Beyond, Inc. portfolio. What we did notice, however, is that as we scrolled through the most recent complaints, they all referenced purchases made through Bed Bath & Beyond. Yes, they all received a timely, appropriate response, but it left us thinking that shoppers are having a worse experience buying through this site than when getting the same items from sister site Overstock.

Over 1,500 1-star reviews

If the feedback for Bed Bath & Beyond on Trustpilot is any indication, that conclusion of ours is correct. Out of 1,700 reviews there, 90% of them were just 1 star, averaging a dismal 1.2 stars out of 5 overall. The biggest complaints revolve around items, especially furniture, not being as described: low quality, non-functional right out of the package, even missing parts. And that's not the only thing people are mad about: we found lots of descriptions of refused returns and refunds (even when it was Bed Bath & Beyond's fault for sending the wrong thing in the first place), packages delayed weeks past the promised date (with zero apologies), you name it. But this was probably our favorite rant: "They put the capital T in terrible... DO NOT BUY FURNITURE FROM THEM!. You will lose your money and be stuck with a piece of crap!” Tell us how you really feel...

It's a "no” for us

We're all for giving people - and businesses - second chances, but Bed Bath & Beyond doesn't seem to be making the most of their opportunity. Especially without having any brick-and-mortar stores for customers to get in-person help or to make returns, they just aren't living up to the hopes we had when we heard they'd been acquired by Overstock. Our advice? If you spot a futon you love on the Bed Bath & Beyond website, pop over to Overstock - after reading our review, of course - and see if they have it too. They've been serving as an ecommerce retailer for a long time, and it's a slightly safer bet than buying the exact same furniture through Bed Bath & Beyond.

Ashley began as a small furniture company in Wisconsin and has grown into a household name with over 2,000 locations worldwide. Celebrating over 75 years in business, Ashley offers everything from kitchen and nursery furniture to patio sets, rugs, and lighting. And, when it comes to futons, you'll see just over 50 options in their online inventory.

Common brands, but Ashley will price match rivals

Given that Ashley specializes in furniture, we were a little underwhelmed by their futon selection (if we're being completely frank). There are home improvement stores on our list who have more futons to choose from. Ashley starts with frames and mattresses sold separately, priced in the neighborhood of $120 to $175. Next, you'll spot some entry-level futons by Atwater and Novogratz - brands we spotted at those home improvement rivals and other big-box retailers too - priced at $180 to $225. So, if budget is your top priority, Ashley will absolutely have some futons you can afford. Better yet, if you see one of their futons at a lower price with one of their approved competitors, reach out to Ashley's customer service team and they'll match it.

Futons aren't phenomenal

When we filtered the futons on Ashley from highest priced to lowest, expecting to see some super-sturdy furniture that would rival what we saw on other websites we evaluated, we were disappointed. Nothing at Ashley is over $1,000, and in reality most of the futons are basic couch styles in the $500 range.

No ratings and many out-of-stock items

It also came as a surprise that most of the futons Ashley sells don't have any customer ratings. It gives the impression that people really aren't flocking to this furniture store for this particular type of seating/bedding, especially when the brands they carry are readily available elsewhere (and often with plenty of shopper ratings). Adding insult to injury, about half of the futons we clicked on turned out to be out of stock - with nothing that would have indicated that as we browsed the main page. That could make you feel like you're wasting your time here, getting excited as you picture the futon in your space, only to discover you can't buy it anyway.

Store does have some perks

We won't say that it's all downsides at Ashley. Most futons we looked at did come with free shipping, and this was one of the only retailers on our list that offered a protection plan; expect that to cost around $50 for 5 years of extended coverage. There are also tons of product photos, and the information on each futon's dimensions and materials is abundant when you click on the dropdown boxes.

Reputation for online orders can be disappointing

However, we're back to some negatives as we look at Ashley's reputation. Ashley's "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau is reassuring, but reviews from individual customers paint a more mixed picture. Some have reported issues like receiving damaged goods or incorrect items. While these problems don't appear to be universal, they're something to keep in mind when shopping online here.

Not recommended for futons

We just can't find anything that would make you want to shop at Ashley for your futon. Their inventory is limited, both in brands and range of styles - and that's before taking into account that so many futons weren't even available for purchase at the time of our review. Between the lackluster selection and the ups-and-downs with customer service, Ashley lands pretty low on our list. We'd recommend looking at our higher-ranked futon stores instead, since you're likely to find everything Ashley has and then some.

It's easy to see why you might be interested in The Futon Shop. In business since 1976, the company has focused on ethical sourcing and sustainable practices: organic, American-grown cotton in the mattresses; wool from North and South America; you get the picture. At least, that's how this retailer proudly markets itself. True story? Read on and see for yourself.

Need a frame, mattress, or set?

Because this store specializes in futons, your online shopping experience will be a little different from most of the rivals on our list. First off, you'll need to decide if you're looking for a frame, a mattress, cover, or a ready-made set. Choose your own adventure.

Browse to find all of your options

Even if you zero in on one of those categories, it's still worth it to browse the site a bit. For example, on the main Futons page, there was an assortment of around 27 frames, mattresses, and covers, but we found other items when we looked on the Futon Set page (like an outdoor futon frame for $1,445 to $2,090, depending on the size). Those sets are a great place to start if you don't need to be super-customized with your futon and just want something ready to order. For example, we liked the Trelli Queen for $1,428. It comes in cherry or walnut finishes, four color choices in the slipcover, and (yay) free shipping. Be sure to scroll all the way down the page to see what all of those choices look like: you don't have to choose blindly.

Be as bespoke as you wish

On the other hand, if you're a bit of a control fan (we'd never say "freak”...) like us, you can get really granular with your choices at The Futon Shop. There's nothing stopping you from putting together the Flat Arm Shaker Cornerstone Wood Amish frame (on sale for $895.44 at the time of our review, with 15 ratings averaging 4.3 out of 5 stars), the Eco Pure Wool Futon Mattress ($699.98 during our visit, which was 50% off), and even one of the recommended matching end tables.

Swatches may be helpful

You may also want to check out the Swatches section of the website, linked at the top of the page. The Futon Shop has several different types of fabrics, from organic cotton blends to 100% organic cotton in various weaves. Those will cost $1.10 each, but it's well worth it to make sure the color and feel of your futon's cover will match what you're picturing.

Shipping is often not free

Pay attention to shipping costs, though. While some futons (mostly sets) are designated as "free shipping”, not everything The Futon Shop sells will come with no-cost delivery. You'll see your final cost when you get to the checkout, but you should expect it to cost $20-ish for small accessories like slipcovers and pillows, $70 for their foam beds and ottomans, and anywhere from $190 to $260 for frames and mattresses. Ouch.

Returns are not customer-friendly

Returns are going to be another pain point here. You've got a pretty stingy 3-day window to decide if you want to send your futon back to The Futon Shop. And, if you do, you'd better make sure you've got everything in its original condition and packing materials. You're on the hook for the cost of shipping it back (which we imagine will be steep, looking at the inbound shipping fees that are charged), a 20% restocking fee will be deducted, and you'll only get a store credit instead of a refund. That's a huge downside compared with a lot of the futon stores on our list, who have no problems giving you your money back on a return and not forcing you into accepting a store credit.

Awful customer service

Although The Futon Shop has an "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau and just over two dozen complaints filed (and resolved) there in the last three years, we're really not sure we can trust this futon store to stand by its customers. For example, the company has a "poor” overall rating on Trustpilot, with reviews averaging a deeply disappointing 1.8 out of 5 stars. People complain (and rightly so) about false advertising, with mattresses described as "chemical-free” that arrive looking nothing like the packaging - and with the company allegedly confirming to some customers that those mattresses aren't actually what was advertised. To top it off, customers who receive futons and mattresses that don't fit the description are required to pay for the return shipping fees. The Futon Shop's customer service "never answers the phone or returns phone calls”, and more than a few shoppers have had to resort to disputing charges with their credit card companies just to get some kind of recourse on their purchases.

Don't buy your futon here

We just can't see any good reason to trust The Futon Shop with your business. Their futon frames, mattresses, and sets are some of the most expensive ones out there - largely because of their claims of being made of superior materials, which seems to have been proven false by multiple shoppers. You can't count on getting any support here, if you get the wrong item or have literally any other issue. If you're set on getting a high-end futon, there are far more reliable retailers to choose from on our list. Avoid The Futon Shop and save yourself the headache.
