Futonland is the largest retailer of futons in our evaluation. They sell the beds, mattresses, and covers for the futons. Futonland was founded in 1995 in Queens, New York. They pride themselves on not being a big box store and they sell to all 50 states.
Variety of options
When shopping at Futonland, you will see that they have a variety of options. They have options as small as a futon chair and as large as a queen size futon bed. Another offering they provide is Amish futon frames. Futonland also makes custom futons if you need something more unique.
Various forms of delivery
When looking into shipping with Futonland it will take approximately 2 to 3 weeks, however it could take up to 4 months when ordering a custom futon. Futonland offers five types of delivery.
With all of the delivery options, they require someone over the age of 18 to be present to sign for the item and for accessibility for a 48-foot trailer to deliver the item.
Decent return policy
Futonland has a decent return policy. If you cancel your item before it processes, it is the easiest and cheapest option. If the order has been processed but has not arrived, you are subject to a 20% restocking fee. In the event that you received free shipping, you are also responsible to pay back what shipping would have been. Once the item arrives, you have 30 days to submit a return. The item must be in its original condition, free of stains and damages. Once they receive and process your return, they will send your refund. They do, however, charge that 20% restocking fee on returns.
"F" rating on BBB
When checking Futonland's reputation on the Better Business Bureau's website, we found a not-so-pleasant answer. They have received an "F" rating and many customer warnings to stay away. Most of the complaints are from customers who were sent the wrong items. There is a complaint about a custom order taking over 10 weeks and then Futonland canceled that delivery too. They then stated on the BBB website that if the customer would choose to cancel the order, they would be responsible for the 20% restocking fee plus the shipping costs which amount to $780.
Avoid shopping here
Overall, we cannot recommend Futonland as a safe place to purchase a futon. While they have a wide range of options, your chances of getting what you ordered are slim. If you happen to get lucky and get the correct item, it most likely won't arrive in the promised time. We encourage you to shop at one of the other retailers in our review instead.
Futons are a common piece of furniture to sleep on or relax. The convenience of having it be a chair or couch by day and a bed by night makes it a convenient addition to any house. Futons are great for an extra bed for company that can be left as a couch or chair during the day or when no one is using it. They are also fantastic for bedrooms that have limited space, since you can use it as a bed at night but save space during the day by making it back into a couch.
The mattress cover can be made out of several types of materials, such as microfiber, cotton, linen, velvet - the possibilities are almost endless. Futon mattresses are very similar to traditional mattresses but as an added bonus you can turn the mattress into a couch. Instead of purchasing a bed and a couch, a futon provides both of these pieces of furniture in one for an affordable price. Futon covers are interchangeable so you can update the look of your futon as often as you like.
Traditionally a Japanese style of bedding, a futon consists of a mattress and duvet cover and both are able to be folded and stored away. In Japan, futons are used on a tatami, which is a type of mat. In the United States, typically a futon is used on a wooden or metal frame instead. Futons became popular in the USA in the 1980's and are traditionally thicker and harder to fold up than those in Japan.
There are many retailers to consider when going to shop for a futon, between small businesses, big box stores, online and even an app on your phone. There are a variety of style options to choose too. What color mattress do you need? Do you want a wood frame or a metal one? A chair futon, a couch futon or a bed futon? Once you have an idea of what you are looking for, we have helped narrow down the stores to shop from to find it.
