Natural Home (by The Futon Shop) was founded in 1976 in San Francisco, California. They are a farm-to-furniture company and they do not utilize a middleman in the process. They have 3 physical locations you can visit in California, located in San Mateo, Santa Rosa, and San Marcos.
Organic and natural
What sets Natural Home apart from their competitors is the materials used to make their futons. Everything is 100% organic and natural, eco-friendly, handmade in the USA, and with all recycled materials. They have four certifications to go along with these: USDA Organic, Confidence in Textiles, GOLS Certified Latex and GOTS Certified organic wool. The ingredients used in Natural Home's products were all created by nature. These include wool, cotton, latex, coconut, spring and hemp. Natural Home carries your traditional futon, chairs, bunk beds, and daybeds. This retailer also carries outdoor futon frames, which isn't something we saw at other stores. If you have any questions on which futon is for you, they also provide a detailed FAQ section on their website to assist.
3-week shipping
Natural Home ships to 48 states, the exceptions being Hawaii and Alaska. Shipping is expected to take 3 weeks on average. When shopping around their store, they do offer free shipping on most items and this is indicated on the product page. If you happen to live close enough to a physical location, you are also able to do free in-store pickup 7 days a week.
Limited warranty
Natural Home offers a limited warranty on their products. You will have 24 hours to notify them if something is wrong with your order. They advertise that the product you receive may look different than what you see online or on the floor due to each piece being handcrafted. They offer a 5-year warranty on wooden frames, 1-year warranty on platform beds, a 7-year warranty on futon mattresses, slipcovers and pillows. These are all defect warranties and do not cover normal wear and tear. For their return policy, Natural Home offers exchanges only and nothing on custom orders.
Negative customer opinions
We were ready to give Natural Home a high rating due to their natural ingredients and handmade pieces. However, customer reviews prevented that from happening. The only positive reviews for Natural Home that could be found were from those that had shopped in person. For those that ordered over the phone or online, it was a far different story. Customers complained about products arriving moldy or molding shortly after arrival. They also stated that it was extremely difficult to get someone on the phone to process an exchange or return. There was a lot of frustration and customers warned others not to shop at this store.
Go to the physical store
Overall, the natural and unique features of Natural Home kept them out of the bottom of the reviews. If you are able to go into a physical store, this might be an excellent option. However, if you are not located in California, and would have to order online, it would be wise to look elsewhere or you may be disappointed.
Futons are a common piece of furniture to sleep on or relax. The convenience of having it be a chair or couch by day and a bed by night makes it a convenient addition to any house. Futons are great for an extra bed for company that can be left as a couch or chair during the day or when no one is using it. They are also fantastic for bedrooms that have limited space, since you can use it as a bed at night but save space during the day by making it back into a couch.
The mattress cover can be made out of several types of materials, such as microfiber, cotton, linen, velvet - the possibilities are almost endless. Futon mattresses are very similar to traditional mattresses but as an added bonus you can turn the mattress into a couch. Instead of purchasing a bed and a couch, a futon provides both of these pieces of furniture in one for an affordable price. Futon covers are interchangeable so you can update the look of your futon as often as you like.
Traditionally a Japanese style of bedding, a futon consists of a mattress and duvet cover and both are able to be folded and stored away. In Japan, futons are used on a tatami, which is a type of mat. In the United States, typically a futon is used on a wooden or metal frame instead. Futons became popular in the USA in the 1980's and are traditionally thicker and harder to fold up than those in Japan.
There are many retailers to consider when going to shop for a futon, between small businesses, big box stores, online and even an app on your phone. There are a variety of style options to choose too. What color mattress do you need? Do you want a wood frame or a metal one? A chair futon, a couch futon or a bed futon? Once you have an idea of what you are looking for, we have helped narrow down the stores to shop from to find it.
